    "Intel 8088? But it says AMD!"
    Yes, but it's still an Intel 8088 :)
    AMD used to be an officially licensed Intel manufacturer back in the day! #nowyouknow

      The keyboard interface was redesigned in the Amstrad 1640 to make the design more distinct from the IBM PC. I suspect that's probably part of the reason the keyboard interface in the Tandy is different... though of course, Tandy wanted to try and keep all it's peripherals compatible too.
      The V30 in my Amstrad is actually a Sharp, replacing a Fujitsu 8086
      I like the Tandys. Their approach is very reminicent of Amstrads, including the surprisingly small size. IBM were surprisingly inefficient in their system building, they left a lot of scope for economies for other manufacturers to exploit.

    The keyboard is mechanical. It's Fujitsu Leaf Spring linear switches. It's one of the smoother linear switches out there.

      He loses that sense of smooth a little while later when he excitedly exclaims "This is the furthest I've been with a Tandy." He dropped his game for one second and then the disk drive didn't work!

      *** NOTE: someone pointed out that you CAN NOT put a standard Floppy mechanism in a Tandy - the pinout is different. ***
      Tbh there didn't really seem to be much wrong with it. The fault seems purely floppy drive related.
      Swap in a 360/720 floppy mechanism and it's probably good to go (ish).

      Same here, at least my first PC compatible. The only difference is that we had dual floppy drives, and quickly upgraded the RAM from 128 K to 256 K. SO much better than an equivalent IBM branded PC, and cheaper too. 16 color Tandy graphics and 4-channel PSG sound. Wow!

      The first one my family had was the TRS-80 "all in one" with the 8 inch screen. More than 30 years later my brother-in-law interviewed an ex-Tandy executive for a position in the engineering department of the company where he works. During the interview it was revealed that Tandy itself had come up with the nickname of "TRASH 80!"

    Dude -- Be careful about replacing that floppy drive. The wire pinout is different than standard floppy. And at least one of the flipped pins is for power. Tandy drives some of them have a jumper for this thing and in other cases you need to do surgery on a floppy cable to make it interface with a standard drive correctly.
    For best results, take apart the drive it came with and clean it good and hope for the best.

      I'd assume this would be LGR's first resort: Very much into the restoration, that man.
      And working 5.25 drives aren't cheap these days, so it's almost always economically more valuable to restore than junk at this point.

    Great video! Remember to avoid turning power on/off with a floppy disk inserted. The heads are always touching the disk surface and a voltage glitch on the heads can corrupt a small spot on the disk making a file unreadable. This was a golden rule with the first 5¼" floppy drive I had because it would actually do that.

    I worked in the QA department at a software company from 1986-1990. We were allowed to check out computers to bring home over the weekend, and whenever I could I'd bring home our Tandy 1000 to play games and write programs in BASIC. I wanted one so bad. I _loved_ the keyboard; it was so smooth. I had a TRS-80 Model III I'd bought in 1982 that was starting to look pretty antiquated by 1986. I could never quite pull the trigger on buying the 1000, but I eventually bought a Tandy 3000 NL (which was a 286) in 1989.

      Was it some American thing? My whole youth I spend wondering what mysteries that Tandy choice might be hiding, because most games would give Hercules, CGA, EGA, Tandy, VGA/MCGA as choices (or a subset of those) Yet I never found anyone, no family, no schools, no business with a Tandy. I knew more people with a Ferrari (2) than with a Tandy (0)

    You should do a Tech Tales video on Radioshack, specifically the Tandy brand. It's a shame it all went away, I'm guessing because the computer market got too competitive but I wonder if things could have turned different in the long-term if they'd doubled-down on the Tandy brand or just computers in-general?

    • @SpearM3064
      @SpearM3064 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah. It went away because in the early 1990s, for some reason they decided to sell their computer manufacturing business to AST Computers, ending production of the Tandy line. AST Computers, however, DID end up having problems in the competitive home computer market. AST effectively disappeared in 2001.

    My first PC was the Tandy 1000HX around 1992-93. I fondly remember having the pants scared off me in the early 90's playing Out of This World (Another World depending on region), sleuthing around for Carmen Sandiego, or firing up the dot matrix printer to print off my latest Mario Paint creation. Sitting here typing this in front of a triple monitor, water-cooled beast of a PC, I am humbled by the exponential evolution of technology:)

    Probably dirt on the floppy going on the disc head, I had this problem when I booted up my Atari 800 after 30 years cleaned the magnetic media on the floppy’s carefully with alcohol and and the read write head and it works fine after that

      Yep, after a good cleaning last week it was working just fine

    • @siliconinsect
      @siliconinsect 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was about to suggest this. As magnetic media ages (tape, disk, whatever) certain oxide chemistries like to "shed" to the head reading it. Some older tapes I've recovered are a one shot deal as playing them destroys the media.
      Look up "tape baking". Probably works for floppies too.

    I have an SX with a HardCard and pretty much every other upgrade it would have reasonable had - internal modem, serial port with serial mouse, clock/calender chip, full RAM on motherboard - hooked up to a PCjr monitor with a TRS-80 2000 keyboard and I dig it for Tandy/PCjr games. It doesn't get used as often as my IBMs, but it gets used more than either of my PCjrs.
    It doesn't have DeskMate on it currently, but eventually I'll get around to that.

    • @DuckGWR
      @DuckGWR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOGIN Noticias Not a Plus Development HardCard 20, if that's what you mean. The 1000SX and other 1000s of its form factor are too short for full length cards. It's a good thing the motherboards of 1000s generally allow for the full 640k, clock/calendar, etc as not having them and not being able to fit the full length AST SixPacPlus to cover that, for example, probably would have hurt them.
      Anyways, the hard card in my 1000SX is an off the shelf controller and ST 157R hard drive mounted to a bracket. I believe the formatted capacity with an RLL controller is about 50Mb, but I think the controller it is on is an MFM controller that has it formatted as 40Mb, but I would have to double check. The package was put together by a company I hadn't seen before or since, something with peripherals in the name.

    Oh yeah! Now you're speaking my language! This was one of two Tandy computers of my childhood, the other being one of the pizza box models. Got both of them second hand in the early 90s, along with a couple old Macintosh computers. Tandy really was the face of quality for the home computer user, their machines were competitive with some of the lower to mid end business models from IBM and cost about the same price as their home offerings if memory serves me right.
    Sadly the Tandy 1000 died with a cryptic "boot failure" message that I now believe to have been due to the RAM becoming loose, which was apparently an issue they sometimes had. I wish I knew a little bit of what I know now back then, else it wouldn't have ended up in a dumpster somewhere.
    Needs more Deskmate. It's not a Tandy without the goofy little operating system.

    The Tandy 1000 was my family's first computer. My earliest gaming memory is sitting in my mother's lap while she played Starflight on it. Man, the sound of you typing on that keyboard is like ASMR to me. I haven't heard that model's sound in decades. Digs right down into the nostalgia centers of my brain. Kinda odd how having the original box makes it more perfect, LOL i had the original box for my PET 2001 and i took extra care of that one, compared to the other PET's i had.

      Yeah... I keep asking myself why I watch every one of these videos seeing I will probably never buy a vintage 1980s pc or let alone 90s. I guess it's just the nostalgia that keeps me coming back. Anyways I love LGR! CANT GET ENOUGH!

    The Tandy 1000 seemed to prestigious when I was a kid. I still remember the TV announcer's voice from the commercials.

    My first computer was the Tandy 1000TX....loved it! It didn't have a hard drive, so disk switching was a thing, but I loved it all the same.

    What a lovely machine! And you got Foone's Xmas disk! Bummer it didn't work. Hopefully the drive just needs a good head cleaning and some lubricant. Looking forward to see the restoration. :)

    Man this takes me back. We had a Tandy 1000 TX Which was the later version of the Tandy 1000. It was the PC that I grew up with.
    It had a 286 8mhz
    768KB of RAM
    a 1200 baud modem (my dad used it for school)
    40mb hard drive on a card
    Builtin 3.5 Floppy + a 5.25 Floppy as well.
    MSDOS 3.22.
    So we had a pretty decked out PC for the time.
    With the RAM upgrade it allowed us to Play games like SQ3 for example. I would recommend getting the memory upgrades if you can find them for your Standard Tandy 1000 to get it up to 640K if you want to show off games like KQ4 and SQ3 or any of the Sierra SCI games because they require alot of RAM.

    I never knew CRTs were so dangerous back when my family had CRTs, so i would often stick my head close to them power up because I really like the sound of it.
    Gives me the chills thinking about it today.....

    the SX flavor was my childhood computer! if you take the plastic covers off the keyboard over the function key's you'll get other functions such as how to turn the turbo off (only can be done during post) and there's one that if you had 2 floppies, the function key pressed during post would swap the drives (a becomes b, b becomes a). That box so far is missing the deskmate software that came with the one from my childhood. (deskmate was a software sweet that had a word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc. and a lot of the Tandy branded programs won't work in anything but a Tandy) If you take the plastic things off that's over the function keys you'll get other functions like a turbo button (only works during post) A downside to the tandy line for the expansion slots you can't quite fit in a full length expansion board. That monitor is almost as good as an EGA. (just a warning, if you want to put a 720k floppy drive in it you'll be having to enter a host of debug commands to change the bios) you could do the big red reset button too to reset it.

    In high school 1990-92, I had a 1000SX (dual 5.25" floppies) handed down from a relative. (it was already old - my best friend had an Amiga). Still, I spent many a happy hour playing Test Drive on that black and green monitor, when I wasn't logging into BBSes with my blazing fast 2400 baud modem.

    A friend of mine had one of these when I was a kid, Radio Shack and the pointless customized proprietary peripherals made me think it was junk, but I was strangely curious about Deskmate, amazed by the colour and sound (coming from CGA..), and really appreciated the ports on the *front* of the machine. I was stupid for thinking it was junk, and an a*hole for saying it. Honestly an awesome machine. As a kid I remember not trusting half of what I heard because all that was available for free were paid for by sales departments, lies from small scummy computer sales people, and word of mouth from kids like me who were fiercely loyal to whatever they had and knew. Reminds me so much of the Android/iPhone battles today. I could say I should have researched his machine more... but seriously, how? Information was hard to get.

    I recently gave my Tandy 1000SX and monitor away after finding it at my dad's house after he died last July. We had bought it new in the 80's and later upgraded it to 640k RAM. Learned to program in BASIC and PASCAL on that thing. Didn't have room to bring it home, so gave it to the realtor that helped sell the house. Hope he didn't just toss it.
