Got one and I think your comparison is spot on. Smoother catch and power phase. I didn’t realize how aggressive the catch on the hydro was because that one was smoother than the previous rectangular Hydro. So far I like it but sort of prefer the old round shaft slightly
I tried this paddle at a race over the weakened and I felt like the paddle was not catching the way my quick blades do, although I was able to get the same speed. I think that might have been the company’s goal because I didn’t feel like my shoulders were strained. Granted, I have been using Quickblade which are probably too big or meant for taller people or people who weigh a lot more. I think it’s worth a shot to buy one and if I don’t like it, maybe I can sell it. But then again, I said that about my Gen R and I can’t sell that to save my life.
Thanks for the great review, Ethan. Wow what a change in climate moving to WA! Sounds like the catch on the new Synergy might be a little softer with its less squared off shape vs the Hydro?
Yes I find the catch to be a little softer and not quite as "grabby" as the Flow-X which I like. The reduced blade volume also helps give it a cleaner and easier entry.
It definitely depends on your bodyweight and paddling experience. I would recommend sending Chris from Black Project an email and he will recommend the best size for you to use. You can contact him here: blackprojectsup.com/contact/
I am wondering about the product cycles of some companies. Started with a square going to rounded tipps, back to square. Deep concave, lighter concave, tripple, quadruple concave. Every time it is the invention and marketing thing. Honestly test as much as possible to find your preferred paddle. Anyway I love my Hydro X.
That’s what Starboard does. One year stable allwater next year fast but tippy. One year squared rails next year rounded. It’s all been done it’s just finding out the best combination for the conditions you paddle and your body weight and athleticism.
Great video. I was wondering what lake it was until right at the end and you went under the small bridge. I haven't gotten down there to paddle yet, but, it looks like an amazing lake to cruise around. It has been so windy and choppy on Lake Washington for the last month, I have been trying to find a more sheltered place to go paddle.
@@ethanhuffsup Great job with your paddling at Gig Harbor, I was thinking about getting down there, but had things to do around the house from the wife. You know.. The Honeydo list.
I haven't tested the Tempo X in a while but the main differences are the carbon materials used to construct the paddles as well as the Tempo does not have a tapered shaft like the Synergy does.
Not trying to be a douche, but you don’t need to keep repeating ‘with that being said’, and especially not within a few seconds. It’s annoying, dude. Love your vids otherwise
Welcome to Washington! See you on the water!

Nice congrats! It's a great paddle!
Love that lake, haven’t been there in years

Haha yeah I'm learning to brave the colder temperatures! 🥶
Would recommend the synergyx size l for an intermediate tall and heavy paddler for occasional racing and touring?
( 6'3' , 276 lbs )

Yep, always test it yourself and find what works best for you. 👍

Hi Ethan, I’m sorry if I missed this but could you tell me what size blade and what shaft flex were you running.? Many thx
For the Synergy I'm using the L blade at 91in2 and the shaft is oval tapered 30T with Flex 45.

Yeah it's been a windy few weeks down here as well. But, every now and then you get a glassy calm day like this. 😃

what kind of microphone are you using? is it waterproof? i assume youre using it paired with insta360 x3?
It's just a simple lapel mic connected to my phone but it's not waterproof. So, the goal is to not fall in. 😉
How does the Tempo x compare to this?

Здравствуйте. У меня вопрос.
Какой у вас рост и какую длину шафта вы делаете. Второй вопрос.. Какой размер лопасти?
I'm 76in/193cm and my Synergy paddle is currently 80.5in/204cm with a Large blade.
@@ethanhuffsup Спасибо. 🤝
Ещё вопрос. Какая длинна и ширина у лопасти?
@@ethanhuffsup какая жёсткость у весла?
