  • We made it to the GRAND FINALE of Shogun. Can't believe we made it through Season 1 already! Some really POWERFUL moments in this episode. We've grown to love some characters, and others not so much

A dream of a dream. Blackthorne never leaves Japan. After the explosion he imagined what his life without Mariko might be like and assumed it would lead to him departing Japan. However, the tender moments he had with Fuji and the subsequent determination he had with Toranaga to not allow Ajiro to continue to suffer, showed him that he was forever changed and could not return to who he was.
Also, Toranaga was aware from the very beginning of Yabushige's deceiving self preservation ways. The call back to the line "Why tell a dead man the future?" was his way of telling Yabushige this, as well as answering the question about his true intention of becoming Shogun. That is why they gave each other the knowing smirks at the very end.
Mariko was Crimson Sky. Her mission was to sway Ochiba. It worked as Toranaga received a letter from her stating that she would not be committing the heir's army to the battle of Sekigahara, all but assuring Ishido's defeat. So we did know her death was not in vain.
I particularly liked the interchange between Yabushige and Toranaga at the end about the wind. Yabu asked Toranaga how it felt to be able to control it, but Toranaga's response was that he could only read it. That was what made him so brilliant and successful. As we all know, many things in life do not go to plan. It's how we react and move forward to these obstacles that determines success or failure. He couldn't have foreseen his son's death, the earthquake that decimated his army, etc., but he was always able to adapt and overcome.

32:48 "why tell a dead man the future". That was Yabushige's own words to Omi when he tried to hide the ship from Toronaga (ep. 1). Toronaga repeated that to him while brushing his katana on Yabushige's sleeve. Toronaga was basically telling Yabushige that he has been spying on him all this time

@pangkaji hey...so I immediately knew that he was referencing Yabushige's words to Omi, but I was very confused to the implication that Omi was Toranaga's spy. It made Omi a real bad guy considering how he was the one whispering in the ears of both his uncle and Nagakado.
I never really despised Yabushige since he was really just caught in a horrible position. But the reveal about Omi made me really dislike him.

@@ichwanbedwiner Ok Omi is not a bad guy. He is loyal to his lord Totonaga but learns from his uncle (the best) in playing both sides. Like everybody else, he also has a secret heart. Some are better at hiding it than others. Yabushige was an open book 🤣. The moral of the story is everybody is looking out for their own best self interest. Why is it when Toronaga has a secret heart it is a good thing but when Omi has one it is bad? Toronaga is not a standup character either. He used people (to their death) to achieve his goals. In the case of Hiromatsu and Mariko he made it under the guise of "knew his duty well" and "continuing the fight for those who have died". In the case of the villagers, he tortured them and some lost their heads just to test the Anjin's loyalty

Love your reactions! A few comments to add.
    1) The assassins in Osaka castle were only killing men. There was a sleeping woman with her baby that they passed by.
    2) John as an old man was his dream of a possible future. The title of the episode is "A Dream of a Dream." When John drops Mariko's necklace in the water he is letting go of that possible future/dream.
    3) Toranaga's line "Why tell a dead man the future?" is a call back to a line in the first episode where Yabushige says the same thing when refering to Toranaga.
I'm sad the show is over. Looking forward to your next review! 🙂

In the beginning, that wasn’t a flash forward, that was a dream of what he expected for himself, hence the title. He never left Japan. Toranaga became shogun and under his “reign” there were no wars for 250 years.

Toranaga's last trick to all of us. Despite repeating his reluctance to become a Shōgun throughout the series, that's exactly what he was aiming for from the beginning.

there was never meant to be a 2nd season. it's good bc its based on a fleshed out book and singular, which hollywood doesn't really do. the creators had no intention of making another. hollywood wants to make a 2nd season bc it was a hit and they threw enough money at it to make it happen. guess we hafta cross our fingers. remember what happened when they ran out of book w game of thrones.
based on some actual history, blackthorne will never leave japan. japan will have an era of "peace" or relative stability.
btw, the scenes in england were a dream AND lady ochiba was right to fear toranaga for herself and the son as the taiko did before his death. he'd eventually make them commit sepuku when they threatened his rule. don't let the "peace" be confused w altruism, toranaga has always wanted to be shogun behind the 8 fold fence.

I believe it is a mistake to do a second season. Toranaga wins the battle of Sekigahara, is eventually "invited" to become Shogun, and Japan has more than 250 years of peace. Typical Hollywood to capitalize on a hit, and then ruining it. You think they would learn from such blunders as Castle, Game of Thrones, etc.
