I am student of Raghava. I have seen up close how he works both as a performer and as a teacher. He is one of the few great teachers we have who respects the tradition of Guru Parampara and sastram.
As mentioned by the interviewer, his Jathis are exquisite.
Raghava Vedantam, renowned for his scholarly approach to Kuchipudi, possesses a unique ability to envision Jatis that seamlessly align with the mood of a song. His Jathis are not mere scientific constructs; they are an artistic manifestation of his natural talent and deep understanding of the art form. Raghava Vedantam’s choreographic brilliance is a fusion of tradition and innovation. His choice of dhayana slokas, ragas, and talas is a testament to his darsanic knowledge and artistic sensibility. Each choreography is a symphony of steps, gestures, and expressions, carefully crafted to evoke Bhakti Rasa in both the performer and the audience.
Commenting on Patanjali Sthavam, that is a master piece indeed. It is difficult to design steps and Jatis for the complex sanskrit words of the poem where there are no long syllables. Before the performer finishes one step and mudra for a word, the lyrics will go ahead with breakneck speed.
For Patanjali Sthavam he picked slokam that talks about shatvimsati Tatvam (26 Tatvam). Unless one knows the difference between Sankhya’s 25 tatvas and Yoga Darsana’s 26 tatvas one can’t pick the correct one. That shows the darsanic knowledge Raghava has.
