The Battle for Middle-earth is a 2004 real time strategy game based on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. This game shares similarities with both Dawn of War and Halo Wars, utilizing unit veterancy, control points, and predefined building placement slots. Hero and Battalion veterancy builds over missions and follow you through the campaign. Most normal units have purchasable upgrades and may also have abilities such as changing formation, changing weapons, and combining with other squad types.

here is some advice from an old player
    1. you will eventually be able to chose where you fight, and each location will give you some benefit for clearing it (increase max supply, increase resource gather rate etc.).
    2. you won't have to do the last mission in either campaign immediately when it becomes available, so if you want to show of every map you can.
    3. unit levels and upgrades carry over between maps, so you should invest in upgrading your army whenever you can
    4. both campaigns use the same gameplay systems, so you won't have to relearn the game just learn minor faction differences.
    5. you can "fuse" two different units together (an archer unit and a swordsman) i could never figure out how to undo it so i didn't use it much but you do you.
    6. you will want to invest in your base defenses, nothing better than a fort that can protect itself (secret passage OP).
    7. the game doesn't follow the story of LOTR completely, so you will want to complete all bonus objectives.
    8. you can rename non hero units on the end of mission screen which might be a neat thing to do for discord members or channel subscribers.
    now for my price...
please put a link for the HD mod you are using in the next video's description, I would love to be able to play my copy with these graphics
(*cough cough please name a Rohirim unit after me cough cough*)

Jay, I don't know if this was explained during the tutorial but you can set most of the hero/unit special abilities like Gandalf's wizard blast on autocast by right clicking the symbol. The symbol gets all sparkly and Gandalf goes blastin' like there's no dawn for men.

You can do the small "side missions" in any order but you can only do so much before the game forces a main mission, then you either return to command the same army that you did the previous missions with in this case Eomir. or another army in the map.
Also the units in the specific army maintain their upgrades and ranks for the next mission, even main missions. Also the units you recruit in the mission will be added to the army on the map just like the upgrades and ranks, and if they die in the mission they die in the campaign, except main heroes in that case the mission will fail.

So I bloody loved this game when I was younger. I played it before I ever got into Starcraft or other RTS style games, and this game probably played a big part in first really biting into that type of gameplay.
So here's a few tips from a veteran.
    1. You're not gonna have everything ready at the beginning. Each faction has their own upgrades, units, and playstyles. And generally within a campaign you play as two factions that are vaguely similar. But sometimes core features of those factions aren't available from the start.
As an example, you can upgrade units with permanent buffs like Heavy Armor, or Horse Shields. However several of those buffs are not available until certain points in the game that act as an unlock trigger. So you don't have to take it slow, you can afford to just rush through until you hit the point you can start putting down roots. Just remember that your army will carry through from mission to mission, (with their upgrades) even if its above the Command Point limit.
However, this game does have a rather annoying design problem. A number of upgrades are gated behind a building's level, which goes up by using the building to produce it's units (The upgrade will be available, but greyed out until the building is upgraded). Such as Fire Arrows for Archers, or Horse Shields for Cavalry. Because you have to produce the unit to level the building, and you want to preserve your unit experience as well, don't rush to get the upgrades unless you're going to get a LOT of them in that mission. It's just a lot easier to bite the bullet and be patient in one mission, than to have to consistently keep building upgrades in all of them.
    2. Units gain experience just like Heroes. While the impact isn't as pronounced as with heroes, a battalion with a bunch of experience levels will be a fair bit tougher than a green unit. Generally I'm given to understand this applies by giving battalions a health regen buff. The higher the level, the faster they heal without using powers or buildings to do it. This can be a life saver in an attritious fight.
    3. Some good hotkeys to remember: Q is the "select all" button, such as F2 by default in Starcraft 2. And X is the "scatter" button, which will have all your units spread out. Which can be really useful when dealing with powerful hero abilities, siege damage, and the like.
    4. The biggest thing to remember is the Rock,Paper, Scissors style to this game. Swordsmen generally beat Archers and Pikemen . Archers beat Cavalry and Monsters, Pikemen beat Cavalry, and Cavalry beats Swordsmen. Use your units to try and target your enemy's weaknesses. Don't rush cavalry into pikes, but instead use them to overrun sword infantry or archers. Use swordsmen and archers to counter pikes.
When in doubt, Archers are pretty damn good. Especially when fully upgraded.
    5. As an addendum to the above, Cavalry isn't a perfect tool. It's very powerful and can do massive damage when running through a target unit, but they'll take a bit of damage on each charge. The damage you take on the charge is based on the type of unit you're charging though. Don't hit pikes with them if you can avoid it.
    6. Gandalf is insanely powerful, especially when he hits max level.
    7. This game *vaguely* follows the story of the films. But some things don't necessarily play out the same way if you play well. You can see that you didn't lose Gandalf in Moria. The same can be said for other scenes in the films.
    8. Missions are not mutually exclusive. You may get locked out by story focused missions, but you will always have the ability to go back later and complete them.
    9. When in doubt, Command Points are probably the single biggest buff available, but Powers and Resources are both pretty useful themselves, with certain powers being able to change the entire flow of battles. Resources can be seen as the weakest of the options, but it does help when doing long attritious missions where an early resource boon could be crucial.
    10. Generally, when playing in the Good campaign, try to preserve your units and get them upgraded when possible. As an example, Rohan's standard infantry is entirely useless normally, but when upgraded with the Draft power (which permanently applies a damage buff to all units of that type alive when activated), and the standard unit upgrades, they can be perfectly adequate.
For the evil campaign, because their units tend to be cheap, plentiful, and limited in upgrade potential, it's a lot easier to just throw them into the meat grinder. Letting the weak protect the strong.

  • @ethan1142028
    @ethan1142028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Base building is tile-based, only a set number of buildings per base. Only one resource which you get from base structures or random small structures around the map (map control). Units are stacks of 5 (good) or 10 (evil) soldiers. 2 stacks can merge, like a swordman and archer stack to make a 10/20 strong unit - shield wall with archers behind. This is good for defending ranged units but uses up supply and the swordsmen will only be defensive - ranged units take priority when ordering attacks.
Units that survive go on to the next map - so upgrades and XP are important. Survival and healing is always top priority. By the end of the campaign you'll start every map with tier-3 deathballs already made - which helps reduce the late game "every mission is a macro mission" RTS grind.
    Upgrades are key:
Flag carrier - gives level 2 instantly, and lets stacks regenerate. Even a 20 strong stack down to 1 guy, with this upgrade (or naturally reached lvl 2 will regen back to 20 guys.
Heavy armor - like a 3x to 5x HP increase, very worth it
Forged Blades - similarly OP damage buff, very worth it
Fire arrows - same as above but for ranged, also can do some special attacks to set ents/mumakil on fire
Horse shields - Rohan and Gondor get special horse armor upgrades, good but Heavy Armor is a priority first
    Best units per faction:
Rohan - mounter archers, can do super good archer damage (archers are OP in this game, all factions) and kite amazingly, can also do trample damage when needed / alt choice is standard Rohirrim, very strong cavalry. All cavalry do physics based trample damage by moving *through* enemy formations. Only order them to engage actual melee to finish off weak units, otherwise just keep runing them over, back and forth
Gondor - Nothing is great, everything is good
Isengard - strong tanky infantry. Good at slow attrition. I'd say pike stack + crossbow stack combined stack is best. Basically counters everything, but a bit slow.
Mordor - orc warriors are FREE but garbage, can be useful to always have some flowing toward an enemy base though. Evil men (hardadrim/easterlings) are the best units. Trolls are good too, if they get a critical mass and can't be focused down. Mordor doesn't get any upgrades except flag carrier.

1st game I've ever owned, so glad your playing it.
    Some tips:
1: Right-click hero powers to allow the heroes to use them on their own (Auto).
2: Armies that you build in one mission will carry over into the next.
3: Pikemen are REALLY strong against cavalry (more so than any RTS).
    4. Rohan can build units from their resource buildings.
    5. In later missions make sure to fully upgrade your army, as it will carry over and save you time in future missions.
    6. DON'T shoot mines with fire-arrow archers... just don't.
    7. You can only build building on slots so you'll need map control to discover more slots to build farms and outputs in order to expand resource gain.
    8. Maps are not mutually exclusive, but some times will take awhile till you can return to a map.

just finishied last week, my fav part it that you carry your units between levels (they keep rank, and can also die), as an advice ranged units are your main jam and missions are not mutualy exclusive, the good side has a food or comand points limit of 300, bad side has 600 after that missions with bonus cp are useless, the maps can be very repetitive but are fun the main point is control the map and win, so early agression is rewarded, especialy once yo have a decent army you can win a map in less than 5 minutes.

So happy to see this game again, Heads up on how upgrading units and buildings works, most upgrades and higher tier units require structures to be a certain level and structures gain xp by training units, but units are kept between mission and structures are rebuilt at lvl 1 every mission, so you're gonna run into a lot of situations where you're close to your command limit pretty much all the time and can't train enough new units and therefore can't level up buildings to buy upgrades or get the good units. So try to prioritize keeping fully upgraded squads alive for as many missions as possible since replacing them is gonna be a huge pain.
Rohirim are great for Rohan and Rangers are great for Gondor, try to get some of them leveled up early

So glad to see someone play this game.
The maps in the campaign are not mutualy exclusive, and you don't permanently lose heroes when they die in a map.
All units that survive to the end of a mission are saved and carry over to future missions, aside from any units you get during the Fellowship missions (Moria, Lothlorien, Amon Hen, Cirith Ungol).
In each map you can acquire at most one extra Evenstar point by killing enemies. The blue circular bar around the Evenstar tells you how much of a point you aquired so far.
I'll also do a bit of shameless self-promotion and invite you all to check out my mod for this game. Search for "Middle earth extended edition" on ModDB. Aside from 3 new factions, I added some new heroes and units to the campaigns. I also changed one of Mordor's armies in the Evil Campaign to an Evil Men army (Harad, Rhun, Umbar, Khand) .

Man, I played this game for a good time, concluding both campaigns. It's a good game inspired on the original trilogy (Frodo's story) with some small differences according to the player's actions in the game. There's also the second game of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth with a different story from the original movies (well, portions from the original movie story will be mentioned in the game) and an expansion set, but I only know by gameplays and research.
And yeah, Gandalf is OP in this game with Wizard Blast, same thing to Saruman - although Gandalf's Lightning Sword is OP to defeat a group of enemy troops. Legolas has an incredible range and Aragorn can summon the Dead Army and incite fear with Elendil. I also remember in the campaign, aside from the Powers, you can increase your income and battalion capacity by each concluded map.

Units keep their upgrades between missions so if you turtle up on the first Rohan mission and max out the Rohim you start every mission with maxed-out armys and that will let you steam down later missions with ease due to this game having many optional missions that help out overall. One recommendation is to get a couple elite units for each faction, and upgrade all of your units. You usually get to keep the units you have if I remember it right, so having level 5 units with maxed out upgrades can and will allow you to outright win many scenarios without even taking control of most of the map. This might apply to bfme2 though (maybe this and that both however!).
Some other regular tips would be using cheap cavalry units to both harass the enemy's resource(small) expansions (in this game you get three kinds of expansions, one is the smallest and is only for resources, the others are actual bases with varying sizes); and take control of as many resources you can to amass some infantry to deny the enemy map control.
That's about it actually for bfme1. I think you will be able to decide on the best skills to use. Heroes can also autocast their skills if you right click on them (yeah this one is not very obvious)
Oh, also, you might want to take control of regions with high resources or +CPs, so you can make this process go even faster. You are able to get all territories before going to Mordor, so don't worry.

if you want an RTS where hero death matters and doesn't end the mission i recomend original war. its old but has some amazing concepts, like cutscenes changeing dependiong on who surwived, interesting resouce menagement (they randomly spawn on the map) and unique unit creation (you create them from parts to suit your army) and many more! i would love to see you play it!

The regular missions (the one where you can choose where to go) are not mutually exclusive, you can do them all if you wish. It's just that every few regular missions, you get a story mission that is mandatory. Final mission is an exception, it's not forced on you and you can opt to complete every single regular mission before the final one. At least in good campaign, I don't remember if the same is true for evil campaign.
EDIT: Also don't worry about veterancy pick-up mechanics, this is literally the only time you'll encounter them :)

1 tip for the game: some heroes can auto-cast abilities if u just right click their skills (ex: legolas double arrow, gimli axe).
for the map: all the missions are doable, BUT sometimes u MUST continue the main campaign, soo you need to think what are the best bonuses just to pick them first (aka [for me]: command points). If u pass the mouse across the map all the territories have a level that can be considered the mission number ( Moria lvl 1 = Mission one). Some specific territories are the main campaign missions and when they come, u need to do they just like Moria being the first lvl, u have Lorien lvl 3 -i think-, Amon Hen at 5, Helm's deep at 10..., but u don't need to use this logic for the other territories.

I think the best tip I could possibly give you for this game in general is a good portion of the people who play multiplayer on this game or mid machar's in little bit of a latest so your going to get people saying why don't you do this it make it 50 times easier blah blah blah I you do not need amid Max in any way shape or form to be able to get through the campaigns so just have fun and don't listen to people when they try and tell you just always just do this

Did not see this game coming to the channel but im happy it is i really think you gonna like it Bonus objectives can be very good yu will notice them. Bonus objective gave you 1 power aswell.
Nothing is exclusive in this game if memeory serves.
Also you can take the entire map as long as you do not do the last battle of any campaigns yu can literally take every zone in the map or just do the campaign. GG M8
    Hopefully i remain spoilless

One of the objectives was "everyone from the fellowship must survive", so you were tied to win against the balrog
About the music, i'd say to go on without it, unless it's some basic neutral bgm, but since you tend to keep talking, there aren't many dead moments, so it's fine this way

When music is about - there's a lot of royalty-free stuff on youtube that can fit into this game just right. Also music from Skyrim can be a good thing. Or you can make your own playlist of music that comes from multiple games.

  • @TheSinbadwolf
    @TheSinbadwolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    music, oh well yet understandable.
Experience can only level 2 times per level up in the same level takes a TON more kills than the initial level up in a mission, not worth it for a TH-cam series and can only be done on missions where enemies have bases pumping out more and more troops.
you gain 1 global point by killing stuff in a mission as well as the territory (region victory) bonus when finished.
Locations you pick are not mutually exclusive but after so many missions you then automatically get put into a key story mission. There's also a region boundary that's not really noticeable at the end. Your army technically starts off the boundaries at the end of this video so if you pick the rightmost/leftmost territory you can't run across the whole direction and have to go to the middle one next.
Small story when I first played, I didn't watch any tutorials and thought the wizard and lightning blasts were Gandalfs sword hitting in a different auto-attack animation. I painstakingly killed the balrog really slowly with just attacking and running around to heal out of combat. I'm glad you didn't fall into the same mental trap coming from Warcraft and Starcraft games as well.

I'm so sorry you're not allowed to play with music, it'd be so cool
You can eventually finish the entire map, but you do have to prioritize as you feel fit. Commander works like food ( more max units ), resources are fine, power is super useful to get broken spells and passives early

All the missions will be available before the final mission but not always before the next main mission
And about mission bonuses, I would say that the best are Command points, then resources and then power (that you can get anyways), but CP and resources have limit of how much you can increase them

You can pick them in any order you want to but after some missions story specific missions are forced on you like the battle for Hornburg or the battle where Boromir dies. So i reccomend you do the missions that you want to first. I reccomend going for power and + command points first.

  • @Tom-cx5gk

Yay, Battle for Middle Earth! I believe there was a patch made to the game that causes archers to fire faster than they originally did. It's not super noticeable, but I think it does kinda mess the scripting a bit for a mission or two. Just something that may come up

These campaigns have always been a mixed bag for me. The plot related missions are the neat ones, but then there's a bunch of missions that just feel like you're playing a basic deathmatch.
It'll be interesting to see how you handle the ends of these campaigns. Like, you can go to the final mission, but then there's like 20-30 extra deathmatch areas you can still go to for additional resources.

  • @TheBlackPearlOnyx
    @TheBlackPearlOnyx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Jay, I have some help for you, in the past I had 1.0 and the power bar was loading very slowly so when selecting a region don't take into consideration the ones that give you powers if you complete the map. The other two bonuses are a percentage of more resources when you start the game and the other the command points (how many troops you can make, in this game there are no buildings for sustenance), I recommend that you choose the maps with the command points
