  • Regarding practice principles,
    the Buddha taught the principles of Foundations of Mindfulness,
    Samatha, Vipassana, etc.
    He taught the Three Characteristics of Existence (Tilakkhaṇa),
    Five Aggregates (Khandha), Six Sense Bases (Āyatana),
    Eighteen Elements (Dhatu), Twenty-two Faculties (Indriya),
    Twenty-four links of Dependent Origination (Paṭiccasamuppāda), etc.
    However, when we put them into practice, there is an art to it -
    when one should practice samatha or vipassana;
    and, in order to practice samatha,
    which kind of samatha suits us and which kind doesn’t; for vipassana practice,
    what kind of meditation object we ought to use;
    and which aspects one should observe, either Aniccā, Dukkha or Anattā.
    We need to observe ourselves to find our individual style.
    Having heard that I do samatha by Ānāpānasati plus Buddhānusati,
    we then want to do exactly the same. No! To each their own!
    Self-investigate and study yourself.
    Practice with the meditation object that helps to calm your mind.
    We hear that I cultivate wisdom by seeing the mind -
    Cittānupassanā (mindfulness of the mind) to see the mind arise and cease,
    to see arising and ceasing of mental formations,
    craving mind, angry mind and deluded mind.
    It doesn’t mean that all of us must practice seeing the mind.
    To each his own. It depends on your accrued past-practice-experiences;
    just practice in accordance with that. Practice step by step.
    However, we need to keep in mind the precise practice principles.
    To see the mind, is to see it as it is. However the mind may be, know it as is.
    To see the body, is to see it as is. Do not modify the body or the mind.
    You see? It’s the same principle.
    But choose what we are good at - the one that suits our traits.
