I def understand the pressure to show off length. It’s hard to retrain the brain to just enjoy healthy curls and letting that be enough cause over time, the curls with length too
The hairstyle you're wearing in this video is definitely more flattering to your features than the straight style pictures you shared. I often find this to be true. More often than not our textured hair, whether WnG, TO, BO, afro, locs, is more flattering to our facial features than hair straightened to the point of other races.
Hello 👋🏾! I agree. I feel like textured hair on black women looks the best. It was designed for us after all, so it doesn’t surprise me that these styles just naturally look better and compliment us more. I no longer chase bins straight hair like I did when I was younger. Thank you very much for watching!
Great video! When I straighten my hair, it is for a trim only. People always tell me how nice she looks, but what they don't realize is I am just one hot flash away from my hair reverting back to her natural state. 😅 Give me my curlz any day! 🤗
Cami! Totally agree with you on the no-silk-press vibe. Dodging raindrops and worrying about the humidity game? Been there, done that. The struggle of trying to DIY a silk press at home-major respect to those stylists with the magical wrist flicks. Active lifestyle, sweating it out, and the fear of heat damage? I get it. Water-based styles for the win! Twistouts are my go-to too. Got to embrace that natural texture. Also, the realization that bone-straight isn't the look? Totally get it. Healthy hair over everything. Props to you for putting your hair health first. Thanks for sharing your journey, Your honesty is refreshing.
Hey Cammy! Girlfriend, such valid points. I have a love hate situation with my straight hair ESPECIALLY if I’ve paid to get it done. I prefer to style my hair myself, too. I’m glad you shared!!

Happy Sunday 🖤 I hear ya on the silk press. My main reason i dont do them because I dont want the heat damage and my hair is such low density that it doesn't look good on me. I love just putting my hair up in a messy bun or wash n go. Have a Blessed Day 🙌🏼 🛐May the Lord give you increase, you and your children!💜💜💜
Cammy I don't blame you. I am Black-American and Cuban and I use to always get the Dominican blow out or Silk press. I got so tired of straighten my natural hair so I leave it natural. For me the natural state is better because there is no pressure. You can just get up and go being natural and I love that.
Hello hello 👋🏾! Thank you if it sharing your perspective on silk presses. They are just too much for me to keep up with. The moment I go outside my hair begins to puff back up, so now I just allow my hair to be how it wants.
Hey Cammy! I so enjoyed hearing your reason why you no longer silk press your hair. Very good points! especially the point about a rainy day. Love, love your beautiful twist out. Thanks for sharing!
Hey 👋🏾 beautiful! What’s wild is I feel like Mr thumbnails are never good enough. I’ll definitely add that to my list to do. I just have to figure out the how part of recording it.

I agree ! I don’t have the flick of the wrist and people are charging ridiculous prices for a silk press . Also I agree the maintenance is too much unless the hair is trained heat damage to be straight. I love my curls too much to damage the integrity of the curl just for it to be/stay straight (゜-゜)
How about I saw someone charge $700 for a “luxury” silk press 😵💫!! I cannot maintain it myself at all. I would find myself frustrated more than anything because once the roots started to puff up, all I could do was wear it in a pony tail. Yes I love my curls too! Thank you for watching and commenting!
@curlieeloks3032 oh I’m making time cause I couldn’t believe. And guess what…? That was the lowest price they charged for the silk press! It goes up to $2,500!
Makes sense. Sometimes I want to wear my hair straight because it means I save time or I can wear a hat in winter. But I don’t really mess with flat irons like that anymore. Even with heat protectant, the damage is but a press away. I suppose the pressure to straighten is still very much tied to the notion of femininity.
I think the notion of straight hair and it’s association to femininity is directly tied to European beauty standards that were imposed on black women. You’re right, even with heat protectant hair can be damaged. All it takes is one bad press for hair to be damaged. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for sharing this, Tammy! Silk presses are tough to maintain for me too. I'm unable to maintain it and do it myself at home; and I'm not good at helping it last. Everything you said is spot on!

Right now I have the itch to flat iron but honestly usually after I do, the whole excitement and novelty wears off within a day. There are times I would contemplate being a straight haired natural but usually after the 3rd day of straight hair I’m over it. For me because I’m not a straight haired natural it’s hard to maintain the straight look. My nape is the first to go as when I shower it gets wet then the front as when I wash my face. Yeah I don't like how flat my hair looks with silk presses that I do myself, but I also don't trust anyone else to do my hair...especially not to put heat to it. So idk if silk presses are for me anymore either. I just need my blow outs to not frizz, and I'm good.
Yeah I’m so afraid of heat damage. I have seen just too many videos of heads of hair destroyed due to heat. I love a good fluffy blow out too.
I was *this* close to getting a silk press last year, but this highlights all my feels haha. I get SO bored when my hair is straight, but i'm thinking I *might* flatiron my hair once this winter for **the content** haha.
Gurl I know how the content calls LOL!!!
You need to add some music to your jingle. Find a keyboard player and record yourself singing that intro song.
