I think Shinri hates these mascot characters so much because how you can tell that they're designed to be marketable rather than designed to be actual characters. He also directly mentions how he hates how the movie execs treat it as if you should like the mascots, amd I think most people are contrarian such thst if they're told to do something they won't want to do it any more, which also influences his and our disdain for these obvious marketing tools

the minions in the first movie (I can't even remember the original movie name because of how the minions have tainted it) was fine, they were just side characters. but everything after that should not have existed.

But for real, what he said about mascots characters in movies is on point, nail on head. It's why now whenever I get a whiff of a mascot character like that in the marketing for a movie, I know immediately that I won't like it. Minions being the perfect example of that, but there are soo many more in modern animated movies.
Olaf even ruins the pacing in kingdom hearts 3 where you have to find his stupid body and he literally does nothing to further the plot, just like in the actual movie
Frozen itself is just a bad world because Disney interfered with Square's development process.
Of course, the movie wasn't well-written anyway, but without Olaf it at least becomes bearable...
@@shinigamimiroku3723 hearing the unused songs in the Frozen OST just pissed me off so much. The original plot/sibling conflict was so much better and more believable, but then Disney focus-grouped the hell out of the movie and ended up with this incoherent mess plus Olaf.
@@geneMagit ain’t a mess? it’s a very easy to understand movie and while Olaf isn’t my favorite character, he’s okay and I think cutting him from the movie isn’t the solution people think it is.
@@Assasin2 the plot is easy to understand sure, it was a result of the focus group. But they wrote off a lot of character motivations didn't really line up, messing up a lot of dynamics.
The prophecy about the curse and the frozen queen at the start of the movie was meant to play a heavier part in the story, but it was only acknowledged twice. First was the chanting at the start of the movie, and when Anna (or Elsa? that second near-death moment of the movie,) randomly brings it up at the end.
They tried to course correct by focusing more on it in the sequel, but it still felt like an afterthought.
There's also the sibling rivalry between Elsa and Anna. In the movie, the whole dynamic was Elsa pushing Anna away, and Anna who kept on chasing after Elsa like a puppy. Anna was so naive/selfish that she never considered that other people have their own problems/motivations. She never considered Elsa's emotions.
If you listened to "Life's Too Short", that would've been a good confrontational moment between the two. The anger, airing out their frustrations, their misunderstandings, an actual sibling fight. This is a vital part of conflict resolution, something that's required for their emotional growth.
Instead we got Anna's unconditional love that saved the day without having to resolve their issues at all. A stripped down version of the shounen protagist's "power of friendship" and without the dialogue between the two that's required to make it work.
If they went with a slighty sadder/darker route, Olaf's presence would've been more useful. Not just for comic relief, but an emotional crutch to keep Anna from going too far down; Olaf was created by Elsa after all, so they could've used him as an emotional tether between the sisters. What we got was a bumbling snowman that was an adorable bumbling mascot that was just there for the kids, not really doing anything for the plot.
Feels so weird hearing Shinri going off on something this passionately. I swear this is something Vesper would go on about.

I don't hate Olaf as much as Shinri, but now I understand why the movie mascots nowadays don't leave a deep impression on me compared to the old movies.
Mascots nowadays feel so separate from the entire movie. Like putting a sticker on a photo.

he's a case where the developers failed to make him sympathetic so hard and it's all because they intentionally made him annoying

Characters who add absolutely nothing except to be forcibly marketable are pretty annoying, and for as much crap as the Cars movies get, he's not wrong about Lightning McQueen (granted, Mater seems more like the mascot in those films, but even then, he at least plays a pretty significant role).
In a similar vein, I can't say I'm very fond of child characters in kids' media who are VERY obviously there just to act as a target audience surrogate and nothing else. The Detective Boys in Detective Conan are probably the most egregious example off the top of my head.
Perhaps he just hates children..? lmao
