    Nothing is cheating. You get to do it your way with whatever tools and techniques you want to. That's the beauty of doing it yourself. This is even more true when time is money - whatever gets the job done.

      You rich guys get the best like Festools. Cave dwellers like me swing my drill press table to one side.
      Clamp a shelf to the table and drill. Followed by an end mill to clean up.
      YABBA-DABBA-DOO!
      And the glue will be fine. The squeeze out makes a seal. It's not a boat.

    I did the calculations in my head...took me (maybe) 5 to 10 seconds. Quality builds are difficult and expensive, no way around it. I bought both Festool joiners (500 and 700) and I haven't had a moment's regret.

    Just from personal experience I get a lot more stability clamping down work piece and using both hands on domino. That handle adds so much more control but I can’t argue with results. I use a lot of 14 mm on doors and domino xl will kick my butt on them. Beautiful windows and great video

    You should think about milling your own Dominoes out of the same species of wood you’re using for whatever project you’re making. It’s cheaper and actually will last a lifetime given the expansion rate of different woods when the next guy comes along and doesn’t maintain it with a needed coat of paint.

    You can get a little more open time with glue if you chill it, either by storing it in a refrigerator or putting the bottle in an ice bath.

    Hey Richard, Good to see you taking the step forward in mastering your craft. The window looks great! Just a couple of thoughts. I would be concerned that pre priming would not be good for the glue adhesion. If you evenly coat both surfaces with a brush (work it into the grain) titebond III should in itself seal the end grain. Maybe double coat the end grain pieces too. Second make sure you glue the dominos too and get some in the mortise.
    Also, I left a comment for you on the 2nd episode of "Passion for Craft" videos. Made a few suggestions on some great resources you can get if you really want to get into building stairs. Keep up the good work!

    I’m a big fan of the Festool Domino tools but for exterior work you should use their exterior rated Sipo loose tenons or make your own from a rot resistant species of wood. The beech tenons will fail and when they do you’re going to have a big mess on your hands.

    • @HBSuccess
      @HBSuccess ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, usually there is a center stile that both casement sashes close against. I’ve never, in 45+ yrs of working on houses seen casement sashes closing on a rabbet on the opposite sash. How would that even be weatherstripped? If it’s a clear opening it would more likely have an astragal attached to one sash or the other.

    • @dominicrodriguez9908
      @dominicrodriguez9908 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HBSuccess yes some will have a center stile or astragal but I’ve come across French windows that have a rabbit on each sash and one is the active sash that opens and closes on the other sash and the rabbits over lap each other so when you open the window you have one big opening. I get a router and put a grove into the sides of the sashes so I can insert a kerf bulb weather stripping.

    Using a nail gun and a chop saw on interior trim work does not make one a professional window maker. Best to keep opinions in your own field of expertise.

    Unless a primer is labeled as a moisture barrier, you're wasting your time. Normal primers seal just enough to keep the paint on the surface (and that's short term), keeping it from being sucked into the material. Primer gives the illusion of a moisture seal while doing it's job of assisting the bond between material and paint. The wood glue creates a better moisture seal if it's a type 2 or type 3 while penetrating the wood fibers creating a strong bond. I'd rather have my glue bonding to wood rather than primer.

    As someone whos a hobbist wood worker and getting into using more fine woods i always have used titebond 3 for its superiority of water proof but yes you need to be quick as it sets in 3-5 minutes. Titebond 2 might be the better choice for most wood projects unless its going to be outside

      Dominos are more convenient, especially for big glue ups, because you don't always have to use the tight mortise setting. You can use the medium and get practically the same strength, and then you don't have to perfectly align the machine.
      Another huge pro of the Domino is the connector set, it makes building knockdown furniture like bed frames and tables super easy.

    Not to be critical but you are not using the dominos to their ultimate potential and use. By not puting the glue on the domino it will not swell in the joint as it is ment to do. The only mechanical bond that you have now is the face to face bond of the style and rail. In your case the domino is only acting as an alignment tool. And no its not cheating and that is one bad ass bit

If you are trying to show off or display your skills in hand cutting mortise and tenons and you are trying to pass it off as a hand cut result then yes. I highly doubt woodworkers who are using this are trying to cheat on entries into a hand cut mortise and tenon competition (if there is even such a thing) so judging them harshly for using them for making furniture is pointless.
