    Thank you for pointing out the ratio. I learned to build stairs from an old carpentry book from the 70's. It gave a couple of different ways to figure your ratio, one of them being what you mentioned (riser + tread = about 17.5"). I use the other method which is 2 risers and 1 tread = 25. In your last example of a 4" riser that means a 17" tread, very close to what you show there as well. I always explain it this way: a smaller rise means you can step farther horizontally, so if you use too short of a tread you'll feel like stepping off the edge of the next lower step or skipping steps on the way up. Many a carpenter just doesn't get the importance of that relationship. Of course, if you don't have room for 17" treads you, well, that's another issue. But if you're outside building a deck and have the space, consider a 6" riser with a 13" tread. You'll think you're in heaven.

    my new house dimensions on stairs is 4 in riser and 12 in step platform. this decision is one of the best structures in the building, it works perfect for anyone esp the older folk. with 4 in riser, there is not much effort to lift the body when going up. the 12 inch step board is secure when coming down the stairs and it does not make the "drop" feel when descending the stairs. i studied this concept very well esp in because i will be using the stairs everyday and many times in a day going up and down the house without feeling exhausted. when we own a home, we decide what is best for it and the structures must be designed according to the needs of the occupants.

      We bought a home recently that has very similar stairs. They call them “easy riser” stairs. We love them!! So much safer to walk down.

      I built a set of stairs to those dimensions for my exterior deck, for my senior dog. I first built a ramp but he wouldn’t use it. You’re right about the comfort level, it’s almost like you’re just walking normally, up a slight incline.

      With me being physically challenged I'm in the process of have a friend put new stairs from my garage to the house, my existing stairs have a 6.5" riser and I'm going to a 4" riser, doing this will add about 4' to the stairs but I have the room for it.

    My 6’4” dad worked with an architect to make the most comfortable stairs in the world! I wish I could remember the numbers, but it was probably along the lines of 5” risers and 12-14” treads. It needed one landing to accommodate its height, but it was heaven. The last house he lived in had 7-1/2” risers and 12” treads, and I cursed that builder every time I saw my dad hawl himself up those damn stairs.

    I think the 2r+R being 25 or 26 is more important than the r+R being 18 or whatever, especially when working withing constrains of minimum and maximum rise. It's ridiculously simple to take 25 or 26 and subtract double your rise to get a useful and comfy tread depth. 26 if you expect average or taller people to use it more, and 25 if you expect average or shorter people to use it more.

    THANK you for showing the 4" riser option.
    I'm 5'1 and I have a tiny dog. So I really want a wide tread /small rise... without making other ppl uncomfortable. But once you add the tread to the stringer its closer to 5" rise. If I only need 5 total steps I think tall people just visiting my house should be fine right?

    Thanks for your helpful visualizations for making stairs.
    I would like to build moveable stairs for a park model entry. I want 5 steps; total height from concrete floor to door threshold (top landing) is 26". I want treads to be 5/8" thick, 6' wide X 11 1/4" . The top of the stairs will be 3/4" thick plywood 3' X 6'. Would you giving me dimensions for each of the support pieces using 2" X 4"s?

    Thanks a lot for this. I have a piece of property on a mountain side and the road is up at the top, it has a drop off you practically have to climb. I've been wanting to make some stairs but wasn't sure the proper angling. Now I know for certain I can't just cut some into the ground that it would be too steep to do so. Now to figure out my rise and run on a hillside instead of a house which would be easy. maybe someone holding a pole and from the top shine a leveled out laser for the rise and then a string tied from the point the laser measured, strung to the lasers location for run.

    When designing stairs, the focus always seems to be making it comfortable to walk up, but not to walk down. I have size 12 feet and find when i descend on stairs the balls of my feet only contact the very edges of the steps, making it less than ideal as i have to put my weight on my heels or risk slipping. Walking down with your feet at an angle to catch the whole tread is definitely not comfortable.

    Do any of your books or courses cover exterior stairs intended for tile as seen in many countries like Adobe houses or Spanish style houses with exterior decks or patios? All I have seen are metal ones and a few wood examples which I dont believe would last over time. I suspect concrete or Masonry is best but cannot find design information.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is probably the most popular question I receive and if you don't have the room and you cannot get the additional space required from another section of the house, then there isn't much are going to be able to do. I don't offer any free design services, so probably won't be much help with your problem.

    Thanks again! I love your content and love watching even though I'm not a contractor, tho I have close friends who are. Specifically, I have a request.. Would you please do a build "guide" on wooden playground equipment? Recently at our church, I noticed the hand built playground beam supporting 4 children swinging at one time, different weights, heights, speeds was only a single 3"by 5"pressure treated pine beam! I observed how it was twisting and wrenching wildly with four kids on four swings. I told my kids to get off ASAP and told someone in charge immediately, They've since sistered two more 2 by 4s on either side. It's much better now but from what I understand from playground plans my husband and I were looking at once upon a time; TWIN 2by 8s (or TWIN 2 by 10s???) Are needed minimum to withstand the stress of pendulum physics with multiple kids swinging! . Anyway, I guess I geek out on the dos and don'ts of building things. I would love your input in playground plans!!!!Especially when little kids could get hurt unnecessarily from lousy playground plans. THANK you!!!

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spiral stairs are probably the most unsafe stairs you can use and most building codes only allow them to be used to access areas with less than 400 square feet, I believe.

    There is nothing more off putting than a staircase with bad measurements. You can immediately feel the difference & sometimes you come across a stair where the geometry feels downright dangerous, yet looking at them you cannot figure out why. One example is a concrete staircase at our library here which feels like you are going to trip & fall...
