Im a Sri Lankan 🇱🇰 I dont understand a single word of Skald's songs. But everytime i listen to their music tey takes me to a whole new universe. Love from Sri Lanka to all the men of culture here❤
I am an American, and I LOVE this band, I can't understand a word they are singing, but their sound is amazing

It's in Norse, closest modern language would be Icelandic. I speak swedish and pick up a lot of it especially on the slower songs or when I can read the lyrics.
I just came across this band and love them. Makes me want to learn the language.
I find it interesting that a language 1000 years old is still semi understandable by modern scandinavian languages. But Icland has preserved it well so that is good.
I wish Sweden could embrace our old culture a bit more. Sometimes it feels like we is trying to distance ourselves from it as far as possible.

This song is wonderful. As a history major I love learning new languages and finding the translations meaningful. Great Yule stories also.

Didn't understand it for a long time. The background to the song is described in German translations of the tradition as follows: Magnhild has to cry because she knows her fate, that she will drown in the river. Villemann builds a bridge for her so that she can escape. Many people search for her. However, the bride's horse stumbles as she crosses the bridge. She falls into the water. Villemann sings to his golden harp, forcing the troll to release her from the water.
And the short German translation (shortened and simplified) made me understand the song story a little better, hope translated back to English there is no big fault and the sense does not get lost:
Villemann went to the river
To the most beautiful of all lime trees
There he wanted to play the golden harp
For the runes promised him luck
Villemann went to stand against the current
He could play the golden harp masterfully
He played it delicately, he played it cunningly
The bird became silent on the green tree
He played it softly, he played it loudly
He played Magnhild free from the troll's arms
Then the troll rose from the depths of the lake
It rumbled in the mountains and crashed in the clouds
Then he struck the harp with all his concentrated fury
And thus took away the troll's strength and power.
Since understanding it a little bit better, i like it even more.
