I love your investigations of fiber sources. "I have heard or read" (but not tried myself) that mohair is great as a reinforcement in your hand knit socks, especially if you have a consistent spot that wears out. Could add that to your upcoming sockstravaganza science project!
I've tried it! It totally works, but I'm not a big mohair fan. I don't hate it, but I do prefer to try other stuff. You should try it for yours! Then you'll know how you like it!
It works, but I wouldn't add too much of it to your wool blend, maybe around 10-15%, so the sock retains it's stretch and doesn't bag out, alternatively you can carry a strand of a mohair/silk blend along with your hand spun, it makes good socks for wearing inside boots in the winter.
Trish, I am so glad you are talking about mohair! Angora goats are so special they were the original cart goat, please look at the old pictures on the internet. Also, unlike dairy or meat goats they can not have their horns removed. The horns are how the goat stays cool.
Hi Trish, hope you're OK xx 😘 If you put Mohair in the Fridge for a couple of hours, it stops the hair from attacking your nose and mouth. I'm not too fond of goats either. But thats a funny story behind it.!!! It sounds very informative though. It looks so soft and squishy. Could actually see the difference between the Mohair and Llama. This was a great video podcast. Thanks for anither great Breed Study. Happy Spinning. Take care and stay safe. Love you loads too.xxxxxxx 💗💛💓
I am so glad you are back with these. I loved your first ones. This was no different. I went out and bought your breed study for sock yarn and can't wait to get started on that. As always thank you for being you!!!
So excited about Llama and mohair, really would like to try spinning those too. I had no idea Angora can also connect to goats. Super excited about sockstravaganza!!!
I recently bought mohair at a farmers market. I spun it up. I had natural and blue and I blended them, spun them and need to ply them. Thinking of spinning the blue alone and then plying. I very new to this, experimenting is fun.
A sock breed study! That's amazing and the kits look wonderful. I wish I enjoyed knitting socks more, but I've only completed one actual pair of socks.
Yay, more breed study! The sock extravaganza sounds wonderful, even though I don't knit :-) Your mohair yarn is so thin and fluffy. Drum carding alpaca/llama is so hard because it all gets stuck on the licker in but I love spinning it. I just keep accumulating more and more alpaca fleeces...I must have 15 now! I'm never going to get them all prepped lol.
Llama does have a huge range. I used to process llama for small farms. Some people like to have it dehaired to remove the guard hairs. Some llama is very comparable to soft alpaca.
Just got my first mohair fleece and am having a hard time finding info about mohair fiber, so thank you so much for this video! It's exactly what I need!
I'm definitely learning something each day, and i'm getting better, faster and more consistent each time. I wanted to do this early in my learning of spinning, so I could experience different wool and not get into a "I only spin marino" mindset.
@@makennacornwall3288 This is what I loved so much about her breed study. I learned so much and had to try it myself. Now I look at all fiber a little differently. So much fun!
I was surprised how much I liked it. I also got a tip to put it in the freezer for a few hours before spinning to minimize the attack of the fluff. Might as well pass it on!
Thanks so much for this great video🙏 I’ve never spun mohair and I learned a lot watching you work with it. The resulting yarn was so pretty, as was the llama. I didn’t know about brushing it…I want to get some mohair now and try it! The sockstravaganza sounds amazing. I’ve got some very short Dorset Poll that I’m slowly flicking to try and make socks with…I’ve never spun a sock yarn before 😬 As always, I find you completely inspiring - thank you😊
I am not a big fan of mohair. Well, at least that is what I thought. I plied one strand of mohair with two strands of a blend of silk/bamboo/wool. The resulting yarn knitted up into a new pair of mittens. Only time will tell if I get the mohair in my mouth and nose.
Angora rabbit wil also give you extra fiber in your diet! I felt like a cat after spinning a bunch of angora, coughing up hairballs! I will be checking out the soxtravagansa, curious of the result 🙂
I have a ton of sweater quantities (multiple colors) of discontinued Plymouth Royal Llama Silk my mom bought off of eBay >15 years ago when I started knitting. I wasn't ready for it then, but I sure do like it now! It's so soft and rustic looking, though no significant halo to speak of. I haven't really used llama fibers/yarns otherwise. Maybe I should add some to my stash!
Yay, this came just in time. I have been sampling 3ply Handspun for knitting my own socks. I had no idea about brushing your spun mohair to enhance the halo. Gorgeous Trish!🥰
I have not spun either of these breeds, I enjoyed hearing your take on them. I just ordered the Soxtravaganza kit. Hope to have time to play along with you. My order is in the name Lisa Conway, blessings.
Pretty halo but still not sure I would be mohair fan just yet. I do want to try llama and alpaca both though...those are on my bucket list along with angora bunny fur.
I love llama yarn, I have never tried spinning it. I think your beagle wants to be up on the sofa with you and Luther. I don’t remember hearing your beagle’s name before, what is it?
The sock study sounds like a great experiment. I look forward to seeing what you discover. The Mohair study was perfect timing as I've been experimenting with some after being given some raw locks. I was so pleased with how lovely the ones I was given came out that I ordered a lb of top to try. The brushing of the yarn was totally new to me and now I'm definitely going to have to try that. You also have me wanting to try llama.
Brushing lifts all those little ends that are just barely tucked in during spinning. You can get a lot of fuzz even being very gentle, so I hope you try it out sometime!
Love idea of best breed is good for 🧦 I been wondering what is best breeds. I noticed they really talk about this. All I ever hear about super wash merino and make sure in has nylon in it. Can’t wait excited.
Hey, great video, I would love to purchase the sock kit, it is fairly good price however unfortunately the postage makes it very expensive for me as my budget is limited.
That was great! Not too long ago I bought some raw Llama and haven't even taken it out except to see it had ALOT of vm. So I've kinda been putting off getting into it. But you have given me incentive to get it ready to spin. Thanks!
I’m so excited to watch all your upcoming ideas!! I’m also hoping I’m well enough to get to attend Rhinebeck but I do hope if your able I’d love to see your experience there or a haul maybe? Regardless I’m so excited to see all this growth and opportunities coming your way! Stay safe and well Trish !!🌼🌸
I'll be looking forward to the sock study. Not to spin with you, but for the info. I will be going to Rhinebeck also. I've never been, even though I live so close.
The halo on both is amazing! I have a couple ounces of mohair in my stash, and a huge box of alpaca (not llama). Makes me want to dig both out and try them!
very interesting spin, i have spun some llama some years ago, but have not spun mohair. I do have some Llama fiber that I bought about 11 years ago from a farm about 20 min north of me, not the same animal I spun before. It will be my next spin, now I’m curious about how soft or course it is. She had a beautiful snow white show Llama (say that fast 3 times ;p), not his fiber either, darn, so I’m hoping it was a soft fiber because I bought three 4 oz bumps.
I love this!!! I have been getting really into the idea of spinning for socks and specifically spinning different breeds and potentially with no nylon content. I can't wait to see what you find.
Traditionally, it's 10 kilograms of fiber would into one of those round stump shaped bundles. More recently, it is used to describe that shape in smaller quantities. I am usually, or maybe even always, referring to a 10 kilo bump.
I'm so thankful that there is someone raising them! I got a tip to minimize those flying fibers I'm going to try out. You can tell I like it better than I did now! 😉
This sounds intriguing….. is 2 oz enough to make a short sock? Who cares! I just ordered the set! Challenge accepted! That mohair single is lovely… Llamas have such expressive faces…. Very judgmental countenance. Never get on the wrong side of a llama…I hear.
I can make short socks with two ounces, and you can definitely do that. But I figured we would try them out first and sock quantities could wait until we all know which ones we love!
Nope, not a fan of goats either. I got attacked twice by my sister's goat years ago and now all of them are lumped in the same boat. Would love to try the llama

I have 2 lbs of mohair to process, I've washed it and had it a couple of months now waiting. Hopefully after the tour I'll get it done.
