16:41 "even if I did watch it [the original series], theres always gonna be this little piece thats trying to comprehend still" THIS. This is why I love eva, no matter how many times I've watched NGE and EOE, and no matter how many youtube videos I watch about it, theres still parts of the show that I still don't fully understand. Theres always something new to see or figure out.
Austin's take on the movie is very mature, more so than that of some people who have watched the series The plot is convoluted, sure, but I feel people focus to much on how Evangelion is "weird" and "super duper hard to understand", when the themes are pretty straightforward. His explanation on the ideas he picked up from the movie and how it made him feel and how the creators probably felt, show that he really got it, even if he didn't fully get the plot ...and didn't fully get the names lol
So I was at the same exact showing you two were at in SYR. I kinda fell out of my chair when you discussed the person making the EVA fan-film/youtube short lmao. Awesome video and editing. I used to watch EoE once a month like 6 years ago and my normie roommate eventually started popping in to watch it. We both moved out and on but when 4.0 dropped I hit him up to watch it in the IMAX for old times sake. I’ll never forget at the beginning he turns to me and goes “you think Shinji is going to be a huge wuss for half the movie again?” And I was like oh yeah bud guarantee it.
It was really nice to have met you at the End of Evangelion premiere. It’s still an amazing film and it’s awesome how us anime fans consider End of Evangelion a classic.
The funny thing about all of this Evangelion, actually helped my life, and made me appreciate things more, and not have so much axiety, plus accepting reality, and not trying to escape from it in a unhealthy way, but i can understand how it would inrepuily ruin your life, plus the ending of the rebuild movies is beautiful it finally gave everyone a happy ending.
Yeah. I put "ruined my life" in the title as more of an inside joke than anything. Most of my friends know about my wacky relationship with this franchise.
Really loved this video and feel like I just stumbled upon a big TH-camr before they got big. I’d be really interested in hearing your personal experience with the Evangelion franchise or even just seeing your friends reaction to the rest of the franchise. Also if you ever did write a video essay on Evangelion I think it would pop off tbh
Thank you for the comment. It's kinda crazy seeing so many people resonating with this wacky little project of mine which I honestly wasn't expecting to be the one to blow up so (relatively) early into my time on TH-cam. Hopefully things are only going up from here! . I actually first watched Evangelion last December between college semesters. The story of how I got to that point is a little weird, so bear with me. For some reason, I kept getting recommended memes or out of context frames from the series on my Instagram feed and I said, as a joke, that "The government is trying to make me watch Evangelion" in a note and after that point, the Eva memes started to flood my feed more and more. My "friends" would also menacingly allude to some terrible event that occurred in a hospital. Eventually, I took it as a sign that I should just see what all the hype was about. I'd already known about the series' reputation for starting off somewhat normally, but evolving into something a lot more *out there* than most viewers had expected. I had a rough idea of where things would end up by the end, but I didn't have any of the specifics. I honestly was more caught off guard by the earlier episodes with how light the tone was. I ended up dedicating a week midway through editing the Starcraft video to watching the whole series and all of the rebuilds. A week or so watching the series, I had this moment of terror when I looked through my phone gallery and found an alarming amount of memes I'd saved years ago with Eva characters at the forefront. I've been being gangstalked since high school apparently. . Austin's expressed some interest in watching the full series, whether or not he does, is up to him. I don't own him. Although, he did mention that he'd be down for another video like this one, so I am considering putting together a list of things to get his reaction to. I think he'd rock with Akira or have an interesting take on Perfect Blue. I'm not sure quite how many more videos like this one I'd want to make though. I sort of prefer making things with the eclectic energy of the Post Void video (very similar style to what my next project will likely look like), but I think I'll bring some aspects of this into my future videos would look like. . As for an Evangelion video essay, I don't really know. This is one of the most discussed and analyzed franchises on the internet, and I don't believe I have all that much to add to the conversation. Granted, it would probably get more views than my average upload, but for all the effort that would go in, I'm not confident that I would provide all that interesting a perspective or unique an experience, so I'd rather put my energy into other projects. Although, I'm not at all opposed to covering lesser-discussed parts of the franchise. I haven't seen too much discourse around the Evangelion video games, which I think I can make some pretty good stuff out of at some point. . Apologies for the stream of consciousness, I get really excited reading comments like yours -- seeing people engage with and get something out of something I made is such a validating feeling, and I do genuinely appreciate everyone who takes the time to watch the shenanigans I put on this platform.
My best bit of advice to give anybody about watching Evangelion is think long and hard before you do because you're going to love it and it's going to be one of the only things you think about. NGE will ruin your life. 😂😂
Oh, a new EoE react. I love to see new generations reactions to the movie XD. Your friend is totally correct on the directors mindset. Imagine your a young animator promise, you work you ass hard working and learning from the greatest animators of the 80s in series like Gundam and Macross and helping in Ghibli movies, your are so talented that get to make a movie called Wings of Honneamise, witch is a totally marvel movie but totally bombed on box office, then your called to direct on a big budget series called Nadia, but the production comitte dont let you do the anime you want, you know, we need to sell toys and BS like that. But they mess you up so hard that you need to quit halve the series to avoid killing yourself, the series goes so bad that they called you to finish the series with budget restrictions and a mid to mediocre ending but hey, at least you dont let them destroy your baby, im sure fans will understand that anime is a complex medium and adults have to compromise and do hard decisions... right? WRONG, Fudge HIM, lets the critics of all anime fandom voices that we only wana see our egos fullfilled with animations cells and be heard and let him clear that hes a pos that dont deserve to live for ruining our anime. But even then, the work is soo good that they greenlight a new series, a series that will descontruct the robot genere, the dream baby of any animator that grew in the 80s. But as any animation tv series, ships happens, yes thas how its works, and the production comitte fk up again and they dont have the budget to finish the series.
