In the early 70's my dad would get mad at me for carrying a backpack everywhere I went. Books, notebook, pens, markers, sketchpad and a heavy oversized homemade walkman (real ones weren't on the market yet) with 4 hours worth of music cassettes. It seemed practical to me but it was yet another thing about me he was disgusted with me over; making him yell "You carry that thing around like a security blanket. None of the other boys your age do that- Stop being WEIRD!!" That was the extent of my diagnosis back then; and it didn't stop me; especially after I moved out. I've taken a day pack (w/ a series of cassette/CD/MP3 players as each became available) to every job I had (got fired from few due to what I now know were meltdowns...), on every bus I rode (I never drove), everywhere I went in this century or the last. I'm now in my 60's and only in the past decade is it clear to I was controlling my sensory environment out of necessity. My latest one is white with irregular black spots like a Holstein cow and I LOVE it! We find ways to survive even without the benefit of an official diagnosis. I don't know what I am neurologically but whatever I am, I'm good with it.

I think it's awesome you kept bringing it anyway instead of forcing yourself to suffer. I'm in my 30's and undiagnosed and I have gotten a lot of shit in my life too for carrying around a bag everywhere. "You're so WEIRD!" Yep, thank god because "normal" is horrifying lol

Sounds exactly like my dad. And he (and his wife( has kept bullying me for my entire life…for being who i am. All i have learned is that im obvi very hard too love…because im too weird

I honestly loved this story, it was quite touching. Definitely related to the "stop being WEIRD" bit because I'm always called weird for things I do.. However, at least I am never called normal, I think being called normal is the worst of insults, I'd rather be myself :D

When i was at uni i had to lug a whole lot of photography equipment around (and walk it to and from uni about 30-45 minutes walk each way!) and there was too much to carry, so I started taking it all in my suitcase (with something even strapped against the handle). I think it was something the faculty hadn't seen a student do before lol

@@NEONrayne I don't know, I just like to know that if I'm going to get a drink and the top of the bottle is a weird shape that feels weird to use I just like to have straws with me, it's also easier to drink from straws if i have had a panic attack or anxiety attack (both of which i get) when I'm all trembly, a friend could hold the bottle whilst I drink because cold water is a grounding technique that works for me

      My bag is very similar:
      - multiple lip balm/oils
      - 2 different types of hand sanitizer (spray/gel)
      - these things called seat belt adjusters that hook onto your seatbelt and help position it in a more comfortable position
      - gum/mints/sometimes straight up candy
      - foldable hair brush/mirror
      - solar battery pack
      - regular battery pack
      - small bottles of favorite body spray
      - wrist bands for nausea
      - list of current medications tucked into wallet
      - 2 types of sunscreen (spray/lotion)
      - floss
      - multiple types of cables
      - multiple hand creams
      - tissue
      - first aid kit
      - pads in case someone needs it
      - keys
      - wallet
      - pepper spray
      - multiple masks
      - nail clippers/tools
      - motion sickness pills
      - Tylenol
      - notepad + pen
      - small scissors that fold/have a cap
      - earbuds
      - teddy bear keychain
      - phone
      - disinfectant wipes
I feel the need to add a few things to my bag though like a fan, water bottle, reusable utensils, and probably some other bits and bobs. Sometimes I get the idea I need to bring a lighter because despite the fact I rarely leave my house in a populated area, you never know when I'll be stranded in the middle of no where and need to build a fire.
Don't even get me started on what I bring when I travel for even a weekend.

Additional stuff from my own bag I'd recommend anyone add to theirs: a small basic first aid kit (bandaids, ibuprofen, nail clippers, a dose or two of any essential meds, etc), sunscreen, emergency period supplies for people who menstruate, foldable shopping bag (good for more than just shopping!), hand sanitizer, small notebook and pen, a favorite reusable straw, and some hand cream and lip balm. For longer trips I'll definitely throw in my Switch Lite and/or iPad. I also always have a mini bicycle pump and a small folding multi-tool with various sizes of allen wrenches and screwdrivers, which is great if I'm out on my bike and something happens to it. I am always prepared.

I could not bring this much stuff with me on the daily. I used to but recently have downsized ALOT in order to not be bogged down by unnecessary weight in my bag. Being autistic and also with ptsd the heavier my bag is the less spoons I have throughout the day so finding a balance between bringing what I may need and also not carrying around a HUGE bag is crucial for me.

@@merrymerrymead7749 see for me I love backpacks. I’ve tried a purse and other types of bag but the mini backpack seems to be what works best for me. I also find I’m actually less likely to lose a backpack when I’m out because it’s on my back and I can feel if it’s there or not as supposed to a purse that I’m likely to drop or put down somewhere and walk away from. I’ve lost soooo many purses and other bags but never a backpack so now I switch backpacks frequently as it’s kind of a stimmy balmy thing for me to switch to a new bag every so often but I never use any other style than a backpack.

I do this and I suspect I have ADHD and I have migraines. My purse got bigger and bigger and now I have just accepted it's a small tote bag. And my back hurts less.
Always snacks, water bottle, meds, hairties, claw clip, bandaid kit, lip balm, belt bag (can keep my wallet on my belt, can leave the rest in the car), cough drops, dry mouth lozenges, headphones, mini hairbrush, and kindle. Gum whenever I haven't chewed through it all and planner, spare underwear, period underwear, fidget doughnut half the time.
My one consistent mistake is not always ensuring a way to seal snacks and getting them spilled in the bottom way too much. I need to get another of those small stasher bags.
I also have interstitial cystitis and have considered taking essentially a diaper with me when the cold makes it really hard for me to hold my bladder. Been hard for me to commit to that one, I can usually still hold it.

    • @BcOriginal
      @BcOriginal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

not all types were banned. Though tbh it's not the kids fault, that schools are so boring and can't keep them engaged. If schools actually engaged kids in their natural curiosities about the world, and helped the individual. And didn't teach them like they are computers then they wouldn't have such a problem with kids "interrupting" class. And for the most part I think sensory toys/fidget have always been something that pops up as a fad once in awhile it's not the Frist time, take Tangles for instance... Because actually I think most people enjoy things like them from time to time even if that's not how they used to be viewed. Though I think there is a better understanding now about them in the public and it's a lot easier to get your hands on something marketed for adults, to help them with their Fidget/sensory needs now then it was before. But that's just my opinion... Sorry for the book lol if anyone reads this. 😅

I personally don't feel safe walking around in public wearing headphones. Thieves and people with ill intent can creep up behind you, and you're oblivious. Traffic is also a danger, you can be lost in your own world, walk in front of a tram, and splat.

I'd prolly wear it on streets when I'm really frustrated and need to calm down. Find a place to sit on a bench and cool down, take off the headphones then slowly adjust to the change in sound environment.

“..to cope in a world that is not designed for me..” We say this all the time and I feel like it’s doing harm along with the good. Obviously, when I went to a party the other day and it was too much to walk through the door without immediately leaving to hide, let alone stay all night without having a meltdown in the next few days, that party was not designed for me. It was the most overstimulating environment I’d been in for a long time if not ever. But if I go around with a constant reminder in my head saying the world is not designed for me how does that really help when my goal is to be a respectful adult in the world who isn’t socially a monk that never leaves the monastery.

neurotypical getting tips on what to pack in my backpack because I usually carry almost nothing and sometimes it can be useful to have this kind of thing. in my painting classes I usually bring,
    -painting material (of course).
-cell and phone (to listen music on the train).
    -Wallet.
    -jacket (when it's cold).
    -mask.
    -bottle of water
    -sweet candys.
-knife(my home country is kinda dangerous but overall it can be useful for a lot of things)
normally this is what I take but your video gave me good ideas like having a first aid kit.

A new item I've been loving is just a soft beanie. I get very disoriented with bad headaches on windy and cold days, and just keeping my head warm and unassaulted is major. Keeps the wind out of my ears too, which is nice. People kept on buying me hats that were too constricting so I never wore them. I have a big head. I just wanted something soft, and I finally got it.

What I put in my kit:
    Headphones
    Phone
Note pad and pen(because my brain never stops and something might be important)
Crystals ( to look at and I like them)
A glove (for my left hand because sometimes to many things are on the right of me)
    Tissues.
( Btw I’m not diagnosed with anything yet but I’m going through an autism assessment and if I do have it I hope this might help someone :))

I have a loungefly HP bag and I love it. It’s my little bag for easy outings. I have a much bigger backpack for bigger days where I need more items like my AAC device that takes up more room.
So my big bag which I use the most often has my Snug ear defenders, sunglasses, water bottle, gum, pouch of sensory toys that range from little squashy animals to the newer bubble pop toy. I don’t mind when things I need become popular because it just means I can get them easier and at a better price! I have a piece o cloth too. Mine is courdoroy on one side and a velvety texture on the other. Then I have a little tin of Cheerios and a little tin of dog treats for my Service Dog. Then of course my wallet which is also a sensory fun time as it’s a fuzzy velvety Niffler.. and finally my phone and my iPod with headphones. I know I am one of the few people in the world who still has not gotten a smartphone. 🌟🌟

Sunflower Laynard has come to Denmark this last fall. I carry my headphones, planner, ear plugs, battery charger, and a ton of colorful pens, and a book. This is I am not going to university. I carry an extra laynard all the time. I am giving them away to people who do not have them, so I have to pick up more at the local mall or IKEA. Though in Denmark they are not giving out the card with it. Maybe I should look online and find some of the ID cards that attach to them.
I got mine when I traveled back to Denmark from the States in July 2020. I was stuck at home with my family (not crying here about that!!, though I missed my husband), for 3 extra months. I refused to pay 25,000 USD to fly home before that. It was a relief getting through security at the airports. I had one on in IKEA, and this lady with a screaming kid for over 10 minutes, was behind me in the store, caught up with me. I was looking at something and she just brought herself and her screaming kid in the cart right up to me. I asked her to please give me space, I have sensitivity to noise. She starts screaming at me, and well ADHD impulsivity from there it got into yelling back at her. The guy working the section sided with the lady with baby, even though I have a disability. Yeah, I get people look at you and make comments with screaming kids, I have over 20 nieces and nephews I have watched and taken shopping before, some of them also neurodiverse. Yet, if someone with a disability asks nicely, I never got in their face about it. I think it had to do with the “complaining American, how dare they ask me to do something with my kid” which is a big cultural no-no in Denmark. Kid about to kill themselves cycling down a hill after a blind turn into a road, do not tell me that my kid is being unsafe. Yeah that happened, I came to a screeching halt within a meter of that one. Long story short, I told management that the guy in that section needed to know and be trained about neurodiversity on my way out the door. Yes, that was the one time I forgot my headset, and needed to stop to pick something up.

Chloe, I so LOVE your super cute Dumbo Bag:)!! And I LOVE how the extra compartment with the zipper is a pink and white tent:)!! And I so LOVE that pink floral crown you wear:)!!! As for "fidget toys" I know this is old school, but you could get a Rubix's Cube because it is relaxing and you are so smart I think you would love it:)!!! I could never solve the Rubix Cube, but I always enjoyed playing with it:)!! However, I so LOVE your Unicorn cloth with the maze and little ball in it because when I feel anxiety waiting in a Doctor's office or I am in some physical pain, I would to solve the maze :)!!! And although I am not Autistic, I too forget things and misplace things. And I LOVE soft things like plush toys:)!! I have a small Harmony Care Bear clip that I could bring with me, but my larger Toys like my Pusheen and my Rolbie Lamb made by Jelly Cat, I would have to wait until I come home:)!! Mostly I like to collect Stuffed Animals and Dolls ( which are my hyper fixation) whether they are super soft or not, but I also like that softness because it is comforting, especially today because I was experiencing physical pain. And I can sympathize with you with all the construction noise and that headset looks good because I am unable to wear ear plugs due to sound that happens in one ear from time to time. And Chloe, a suggestion is that you could download video games and play them, like animal crossing, which a few You Tube people have recommended:)!! Thank you Chloe for sharing all your survival stuff to get through the day:)!!!

I just discovered your page. your energy is so amazing even though I am not able to match even one percent of it. I can type more effectively than I can communicate verbally, so sorry if this is too long. If I did make a video, I suppose this would be my script. Nobody has to read it if they don't want to and I won't be hurt by that.
As for my bag, I am a 66 year old male of the species, retired and living in Japan with my spouse. I have always carried a purse to have my necessities with me at all times. People say, "Oh look, you have a man-purse!" which only makes me cringe. It's just a purse. I tell them to deal with it. I have a lot of the same things that you have with a few differences:
Headphones, not noise cancelling because I have tinnitus and if I wear noise cancelling headphones, that only amplifies the ringing in my ears. I need some level of ambient noise to provide interference. Too much ambient noise, however, and my auditory processing disorder means I just get overwhelmed with all the information assaulting my brain and I shut down. I have no filter for my attention to what I want to hear when there are many voices trying to enter into my brain. I carry ear plugs but only use them for concerts that are too loud.
Medicine. I am allergic and have to carry an epipen with me at all times. I also have a conflicting diagnosis of idiopathic anaphylaxis, both of which mean I can drop dead at any moment if I don't have my epipen so it has to be with me always. Too many close calls so I never forget it now. I also am asthmatic and carry an albuterol inhaler.
I don't have a badge but I have a RoadID on my wrist that has contact information in English and Japanese for my wife and her uncle in case of emergency. It says that I am allergic (listing my food allergies), have a history of anaphylaxis, and am autistic. I don't like the feeling of anything touching my skin that isn't soft and loose, but I wear it on my left wrist most of the time, which is less uncomfortable than the right. But if I am wearing a watch (I hate wearing a watch but I have one that is very light) then my RoadID moves to my right wrist. I just have to deal with that discomfort.
I'm clumsy and always getting cuts and scrapes, so I have a small first aid kit with bandages and Neosporin,
Extra tissues and masks. I love wearing a mask in public because it provides me a partial barrier from the prying eyes of others. I also have a weakened immune system and since the pandemic, I have not had as much as a cold, so the mask is a life saver and security blanket for me. Some of them are uncomfortable, but I have a supply of masks that do not bother me enough to want to take them off in public. I am generally ok with eye contact, but when I am talking with another person, I do a lot better if I can see their mouth. So if they are not masked, I reflexively focus on and read their lips.
I have my wallet on a retractible cable inside the bag because I have dropped it without realizing before and lost it. Also clipped to my bag and easily accessible in an exterior pocket are my keys and my public transportation pass.
Glasses in a case that are trifocal, prisms, and so light sensitive that they can become nearly opaque on a bright winter day. They are also very lightweight and I am always wearing either them or my reading glasses, one of which is in the case while the other is on my head.
A hand towel for drying my hands after using public restrooms.
    Hand sanitizer for sanitizing.
    Hand lotion.
    CHEWING GUM YES!
A shopping bag that folds into its own pocket.
An electric shaver because one of my very embarrassing stims is when my facial hair is a little bit long, I grab the hairs in my teeth and pull them out. It's a horrible habit that I am completely unconscious of but if I catch myself doing it, I can give a quick shave to the area under my lower lip where I do this. TMI but if we're being honest, there it is.
I carry a little notebook with all my passwords in it.
My bag, a Montbell dog owner's shoulder bag, has two pouches for water bottles and I also carry snacks inside and two external pockets for items of less than critical importance. The strap is nice and long so it hangs down by my left hip. My arthritic neck prefers to carry a backpack and I have several that I throw this bag into if I am going to a concert or someplace where I will need more volume. But carrying a backpack all the time seems to get in the way of other people and that makes me anxious, so I try to be as compact as possible. When we are going swimming in the sea I carry board shorts and a towel, also if we are going to a hot spring. In winter I have all my ski passes in a little pouch because there is a different RFID card for every ski resort. I am the most obsessed skier you will ever meet, especially about backcountry skiing and if you were to meet me you would not be able to get me to shut up about backcountry skiing, avalanches, and climate change. I don't realize when I am in that zone that people might not care about those subjects and I can't stop.
Finally, I have a pouch with all my health care information in it, including my national insurance card and all the registered patient cards for all the doctor offices I frequent. Also my "kusuri techo" or a booklet that contains receipts for every medication I have been prescribed over the time since my last one filled up. It is one of the great things about the Japanese health care system because every time I go to a new doctor and they ask me about my medications, I can just hand them the book.
When I was a child, I didn't have a backpack big enough but my junior high school was a one hundred year old building with bars on the windows and locker rooms with a single door at the end of each hall. I was terrified to go in there because there were fights, bullying, and extortion going on. So I carried all my books with me to every class the whole day and also to and from my home to the school in the morning and evening. By the time I reached high school, I just left all that shit at home. I never studied during study hall. I just went out in the woods to smoke weed with my best friend to calm my nerves.
I have always felt this need to be completely self-contained, which makes me particularly well dialed as a backcountry skier and mountain athlete. I have three different backpacks for skiing with redundant gear (climbing and avalanche equipment, first aid and repair kits) in each one. I just grab the pack most appropriate for the day and I always have my gear obsessively organized so there is no chance of forgetting something important. The forest and the mountains are my happy place.
