    You two are essential movie critique/viewing for me.
    The level of discourse and film knowledge that you have is something I am very grateful I have access to. And just damn fun & relaxed.

    I don't understand the logic of 'avoiding the Oppie double' - why can't Cillian and RDJ win best actor & supporting actor simultaneously. IF they were objectively the best performances in their categories, shouldn't the award go to the best? Why play these movie politics?

    • @ktom5262
      @ktom5262 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don't understand at all the praise for RDJ in Oppenheimer. It's a mediocre performance, nothing special, flashy or very difficult. Maybe it's because he's a Hollywood heavyweight and the Academy feels the pressure.

    • @imsaadhasan
      @imsaadhasan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ktom5262 fair enough if you feel that way. His performance wasn't flashy, but thats why I think he deserves the Oscar. For a guy who spent the better part of a decade as Iron Man, we saw RDJ take on a much more complex character, which required a very nuanced, sly performance which he isnt really used to. He always plays the big mouthed, charismatic characters in the centre of the attention, but he did an excellent job playing the complexities of Lewis Strauss. Everyone's entitled to their opinion though :)

      Blunt and Murphy. RDJ was just Tony Stark 2.0 nothing special

      @@imsaadhasan If an actor deserves an Oscar just because his performance wasn't flashy then at least 200 actors should be nominated and at least 100 of them deserve an Oscar, every year. I don't see what's very nuanced and sly about RDJ's acting here. You mention Iron Man - he is an imaginary character in a dumb movie about superheroes, and yet he is more complex than RDJ's Strauss.

    I pre-ordered "The Holdovers" on DVD from Amazon, and it arrived today. Yes, I agree, peaking at the right time. As much as I want to see Paul, Da'Vine and the others win (and hear their speeches), I will be watching Bills vs Dolphins on NBC. I'm a Packer fan, and if we win against the Bears on Sunday afternoon, we clench a playoff berth. Thank you for another excellent episode.

      At the beginning, there is a brief explanation of why this scene wasn't chosen. I enjoyed watching it, but it in no way altered the trajectories of the stories of the main characters. It did give a moodier quality, though, and let's you fully enjoy the environment (and score) that the movie creates.@@chrisjrosen

      Also, forgot to add that while Alexander Payne is less vocal than Christopher Nolan in his support of physical media, that fellow-feeling is very obvious. This "Collector's Edition" (blu-ray DVD) of "The Holdovers" has outstanding production quality.@@chrisjrosen

    Joyce's critique of Maestro is spot on. A solid script is a necessary foundation for an excellent film which is simply not the case here.

    With two great performances, it would be a shame if Colman Domingo doesn’t get nominated for an Oscar. He’s put in the work. Unfortunately however, we know its not just about performance with these awards.

    I dont understand why there was a Cinematic Achievement Award created. If the GG wanted to award Barbie for Special Achievement just give them a special award. I dont see this award category lasting.

    I actually agree about flipping Barbie/Poor Things with movie/script. I don’t think either scripts would make my best of the year list, but the PT script (and the huge pacing issues) I think is the least strong aspect of that film.

    • @Bryan4Hillary
      @Bryan4Hillary 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@manantial773 I’ve never seen a Fast and the furious, but if I had so what? Poor Things’ script is incredibly repetitive. Each chapter has Bella go through roughly the same journey, and, then, the narrative builds to a natural conclusion that is subverted with a last minute obvious plot twist. It’s rough.

    Bradley Copper's performance in Maestro seams very much like begging to win an Oscar. I think Murphy and Giamatti are the ones who will most likely to win the Oscar with Jeffrey Wright as a strong possibility.

    Lily is not sweeping quite as much as Chris seems to think, the split right not is 19 Lily vs 11 Emma, 4 Sandra which if anything is a bit of an overperformance for Emma (and underperformance for Sandra) given that her movie/role is less of a critics movie/role than Lily. I think Lily still wins the Oscar at the end, but Emma has been doing pretty well so far, much better than she did for even La La Land.

    • @Fallen616
      @Fallen616 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely agree, Stone is still really fierce competition. I want Gladstone to win the Oscar & she’s been doing really great in the regional critics awards, but Gladstone is not safe. Gladstone’s momentum is gaining more traction each day but Stone could hinder that, Lily is the favorite but Stone is right there with her, perhaps a little behind.
