  • NEW Mugen MTC2R Onroad RC Carpet Sedan RC Car First RUN, Fixed vs Active Shock Towers TRACK TEST. Active is a nice feature, but not sure what surface that is best suited for. Most I've asked at tracks prefer fixed handling. The newest 2024 XRAY and MUGEN both have active shock towers and some other brands are adding this tuning feature soon also. Car was not put on a setup station but we did ride hight and droop, caster and tweak checks before each qualifier. Kit was built to manual setup. Review of car and build coming after more races are done with it. I've had some setbacks since this first day and could not run this at CTSR, waiting on front axle parts.

    On asphalt (medium to low grip) running VTA I prefer the front locked and the rear active with 3 degree of toe in in the rear. front 0.5 toe out and it really helped with a loose rear end. Full throttle all the way past the straight into a right hander like your track. Might want to give a fixed front only and give it a go. Granted I haven't raced in 25 years. so take what I said with a grain of salt. Also I have 5000 weight in the rear diff.

      Thank you. For the next video main race I did add rear toe to about 3 degrees but kept towers fixed. Next race day I might try active rear only. We never know what the layout will be but it’s this grey less grip carpet at my local track vs the CRC black at most others. I also need to add weight as I’m a bit under now.

    The active tower is a new suspension tuning feature coming to a few of the newest touring cars. What do you think? If you have one, is there a surface type are you faster with active tower?

    Try shimming the rear shock with up to 4-5 mm.

      That’s sounds like a lot! I owe some updates on what I’ve done with this car but it’s mostly been racing it in fixed tower mode.

    Haven’t seen that feature before, is it effectively the same as droop but undampened?

      I THINK so but there might be more to it than that.

      It's a gimmick because even if it allows the wheel to droop suddenly, the wheel won't have any meaningful traction because the weight of the chassis isn't bearing on the wheel until the 'active arm' is pushed back up against the stop. If the spring was mounted on a fixed arm and the shock (without spring) on an 'active' arm, it might have some meaningful effect.

      Well the added traction should be there just by keeping the tire on the ground vs unloaded side lifting off. It’s definitely noticeable but subtle. The car seems to drift less, but also doesn’t turn in as sharp. So I’m going to play around with it more. The XRay website for their new X4 explains it best. It is doing something useful for pros or brands wouldn’t be adding it.

      @@netcruzer the only way the wheel generates any torque when at full droop is from unsprung mass and/or friction in the arm pivot, which is going to be way less than 1/4 of the sprung mass. If your diffs aren't completely open the unsprung mass from the lifted wheel is transferred to the other 3 and increases their traction/torque anyway. If the diff isn't fully locked it'll probably wheel hop and do crazy stuff anyway, so the effect is merely subjective rather than objectively faster. Would be interesting to see a high speed video of what actually happens rather than just diagrams and hypotheses

    Foam tires ftw

    • @netcruzer
      @netcruzer  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Rules for stock sedan TC class don’t allow foams. Must be a rubber style slick tire.

      @@netcruzer ah ok. Try soaking rubber in warm water in tide for an hour or so then dry. Then spray with motor cleaner and light on fire for very short time and snuff out. Will be super soft
