Since you asked so nicely, we want more videos like this... now I half want to make a list of my favourite movies from each of the years I've been alive...
I’d love to do more like this. My love for physical media only comes because of my love for movies first and foremost. Making videos like this makes me happy!

My wife and I had a party for 24 years in a row. It was a 24 hour film festival (as we termed it) where we showed movies from noon Saturday to noon Sunday ultimately on projectors in the basement an first floor of our condo. We served a dinner and breakfast, had a commercial popcorn popper and encouraged people to bring snacks. As many as 75 people would come at the peak of attendance. Not everyone would stay for the whole thing but many would. Some brought sleeping bags and from time to time even an inflatable mattress. Our criteria was her choices upstairs and mine downstairs. We had door prizes at midnight, the coveted prize being a choice of film for the next year. Our highest praise is that a movie is "film festival" worthy.
Fun fact about District 9, a lot of the assets for that movie were originally made and developed for a Halo movie that Peter Jackson was producing. Neil Blomkamp was set to direct it.

OLDER THAN DIRT This was a great video. Reminded me of films I haven’t thought of for awhile. I wasn’t going to do my list because I knew it would take a while. I too listed a movie for year of existence, but for me I only listed titles that I physically own. This list is not what I currently consider was the best of the year. I tried to choose films that reflected my taste of movies during that particular year. So, fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night. 1955 Lady and the Tramp 1956 The Court Jester 1957 Sayonara 1958 Vertigo 1959 Some Like It Hot 1960 The Apartment 1961 The Parent Trap 1962 The Music Man 1963 Charade 1964 Mary Poppins 1965 The Sons of Katie Elder 1966 Fantastic Voyage 1967 To Sir with Love 1968 Oliver! 1969 They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? 1970 The Boys in the Band 1971 Harold and Maude 1972 Cabaret 1973 The Exorcist 1974 Young Frankenstein 1975 Jaws 1976 The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea 1977 Annie Hall 1978 The Deer Hunter 1979 Alien 1980 Fame 1981 An American Werewolf in London 1982 Blade Runner 1983 A Christmas Story 1984 Romancing the Stone 1985 Brazil 1986 Stand By Me 1987 The Lost Boys 1988 Die Hard 1989 Dead Poet’s Society 1990 Total Recall 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1992 My Cousin Vinny 1993 Jurassic Park 1994 True Lies 1995 The Usual Suspects 1996 Michael 1997 The Fifth Element 1998 Pleasantville 1999 The Matrix 2000 Memento 2001 Hedwig and the Angry Inch 2002 Chicago 2003 Kill Bill 2004 House of Flying Daggers 2005 Zathura 2006 The Devil Wears Prada 2007 Ratatouille 2008 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2009 Inglourious Bastards 2010 Tangled 2011 Dragon 2012 Life of Phi 2013 We’re the Millers 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy 2015 Ex Machina 2016 The Jungle Book 2017 Wind River 2018 Mission Impossible: Fallout 2019 Alita Battle Angel 2020 A Quiet Place ll 2021 West Side Story 2022 Everything Everywhere All at Once

I'm a few years younger but you and I have very similar tastes in movies. Great choices, I may have picked a few different films as my #1 but the ones on your list would pretty much make my top 5 of that year for sure.
@@u77750 no shit! That’s why I missed it, I’m not caught up. Maybe the same people inspired him that sent me the Twitter message. Great minds think alike!
Love this video! Not because my list would be the same (it wouldn’t) but because it reminded me of some movies I had forgotten, and introduced me to some movies I haven’t seen. All packaged in your authentic, personal style that really separates you from so many other creators. Great job!
You should do favorite films from specific genres. And not just broad genres like horror, but more specific groups. Like "best movies you'll only watch once"
I've seen quite a few of these. Definitely not an easy task. I love how Small Soldiers is that quiet sleeper hit when it comes to childhood memories. I was born in 2001, but dont remember exactly what year i saw it. It made such an imapct that it took me until like 14-15 to go on the hunt to find the name and movie. At the time all I remembered was the villain and barbie scene. It was literally the middle finger to films like toy story to reall satirize the toy market, consumerism, and it didnt take itself to seriously.
Here's my list: 1989: The Last Crusade 1990: Goodfellas 1991: T2 1992: Army of Darkness 1993: Jurassic Park 1994: Forrest Gump 1995: Casino 1996: Scream 1997: Good Will Hunting 1998: Saving Private Ryan 1999: The Matrix 2000: Gladiator 2001: A Beautiful Mind 2002: Minority Report 2003: Return of the King 2004: Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind 2005: Munich 2006: The Prestige 2007: 300 2008: The Dark Knight 2009: Sherlock Holmes 2010: Inception 2011: Drive 2012: Lincoln 2013: The Wolf of Wall Street 2014: Whiplash 2015: The Martian 2016: Arrival 2017: Dunkirk 2018: First Man 2019: The Irishman 2020: Tenet 2021: Nightmare Alley 2022: The Fabelmans

Was not expecting you to say Small Soldiers. It's one of my favorite childhood movies also. I had someone make me a Chip Hazard figure complete with the box. Got the Blu Ray copy, really want a 4K!
92? Damn, that's the year I graduated. I was literally old enough to see each of these movies in a theater without being accompanied by an adult. I thought you were older, too. It's not how you look, though. You just seem to carry yourself with a little more maturity. And you're already pretty well-read when it comes to movies. 30 is great, though. That's just more years ahead of you for watching movies.

Pretty awesome that you did this. A couple of years ago I decided to make a list for every year of my favorite movies on Letterboxd so I can easily tell someone what my favorite movie is for each year. Is always fun to rank films like that and then I’ll even rerank sometimes after a rewatch here or there.
It's amazing how similar our picks are. I was also born in 1992 but I'm from the west coast, and I'm sure our childhoods weren't as similar as our picks and yet I have agreed with almost all of your picks, and the ones I didn't agree with I at least understand. Awesome list, and awesome video as always!
Great list, Jeff. Dude, I was comparing my favorites as you were going and my pick for 1998 was Small Soldiers. When you said the same thing I was blown away lol. That’s awesome!
Great list! There are many on the list I really agree with - a few I don’t - and a couple I will have to checkout. Of course my list would be much longer as I’m so fracking old.😅

Awesome video, Jeff! I created a similar list on Letterboxd a while ago. Great call on Small Soldiers. I'm a couple of years younger than you, but I remember having that movie on VHS as a kid. I rewatched it when it came out on Blu-ray and it holds up very well. Summer of Soul is phenomenal as well. I would really love to see that get a Criterion release eventually.

We would have been friends growing up with heated verbal arguments breaking out during high school and college. Hell a punch or two may have been thrown once or twice dring that era.
We grew up with a lot of the same movies! I’m 22 myself - 2001 kid here! Coincidentally, even though I wasn’t alive in ‘92, _Reservoir Dogs_ is also a personal favorite - my absolute favorite, actually 👍

Don't know why an old video showed up but I think your channel is wonderful. I follow you since forever ... long time ago. Even though my channel is spanish speaking I took you as a huge inspiration to start it and decide myself to make videos. The only request I do have is ..DON'T STOP!! Film world is amazingly huge and you are such a great communicator..your videos feel like home! ❤
Memento and Requiem for a Dream were my entry into deep film.. like Training Day was for you. You never forget that moment when your mind opens up to the art of film.
The same year my sister was born! He he! Anyway, being born in 1985 and just turned 38 recently! I'm surprised that you didn't mention, when discussing "It Follows", that it's basically an Aids, or STD movie. When you put it in that context, it is a real true horror movie.
Don't want to say my age, but let's say i was born the same year A Clockwork Orange was released. It perfectly reflects my crazy 1980's teenage Punk years & my 1990's Grunge years.
I got to 1974 and choose Blazing Saddles over The Godfather II and the other classics from that year. I watch Blazing Saddles every six months, and enjoy it every time. The Godfather films are once every 5 years, the other 'classics' I have seen them, not in a hurry to watch again
I had to make a list of my own, despite the last 30 years are my least favourite in cinema history. 1996 - Crash 1997 - Boogie Nights 1998 - Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island 1999 - Eyes Wide Shut 2000 - American Psycho 2001 - Jurassic Park III 2002 - The Pianist 2003 - Kill Bill 2004 - Spider-Man 2 2005 - Star Wars Episode III 2006 - Cashback 2007 - The Darjeeling Limited 2008 - Bronson 2009 - Ingourious Basterds 2010 - Scott Pilgrim Vs The World 2011 - Drive 2012 - Lawless 2013 - Prisoners 2014 - The Guest 2015 - Me and Earl and The Dying Girl 2016 - Nocturnal Animals 2017 - Good Time 2018 - Mandy 2019 - The Last Black Man from San Francisco 2020 - Possessor 2021 - Dune 2022 - The Northman
Because I am much older than you Jeff, so I made my own list on my little channel of my favorite 16 movies that were released since I saw my first movie in the theater. I really liked your list and your presentation was flawless.
Awesome Video!!!! I did my own list and because I was born in 1954, I was able to put on a classic Universal Monster with Creature from the Black Lagoon! It was a lot of fun and took quite a while to compile. Most of mine were action films(007, Bullitt, The Wild Bunch, etc)but a lot of classics too(The Gidfather, Jaws, Apocalypse Now). Again, thanks for your great videos!!👍
Jeff, glad to see the love for Doctor Sleep, man. That movie is not even on anyone's radar.. Mike Flanagan managed to be respectful to both Kubrick and King AND deliver a fantastic film. Nice addition to the list
I agree with lot of these movies on this list, except Doctor Sleep which is nowhere as good as Joker! I would put 1986 Top Gun, 1987 Robocop, 1988 Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 1989 Indiana Jones Last Crusade. Early 1990s movies would be a tie between Goodfellas, Dances with Wolves, Silence of the Lambs and Beauty and the Beast!
@@JeffRauseo Hey Jeff, I finally got around to coping the Amityville Horror Vinegar Syndrome 4k release… you were not joking, this is gorgeous. The colors are rich, the blacks are inky, blood pops off the screen, etc. I wonder if they’ll be a 4k release of the 2005 remake

Even though I don’t agree with any of your pics as best movie of the year, you still pick some good movies. Also definitely make more videos like this they’re very interesting I would be interested in finding out what you thought were the worst movies of the years.

These are all great choices, but I just want to say that I agree 100% about Doctor Sleep. What Flanagan did with that movie should have been impossible. The fact that he pulled it off while still creating something anyone can enjoy even if they haven't read either book or seen Kubrick's movie is just mind blowing. I seriously think it's one of the greatest feats in movie-making history.
Great list. I would love to give you mine. But '72 here. Though another gentleman just beat me by 8 years. I dont feel like doing 50 titles lol. Also you dont look old. Keep on trucking brother. Great videos.
Honestly you felt older to me because you're like an expert at what you do, not to mention your collection is massive! I'm turning 37 later this year haha
Great list, a lot of your choices I agree with, some i hadn't heard of and others that would definitely be in my top 5 of the year if not my #1. Fury Road holds a special place for me as I was on the crew that shot the interviews that featured on the Black and Chrome DVD/BD edition and that was an amazing week meeting and talking to some industry legends. Love horror movies and will check out the recommendations on this list.

@@HaveYouSeenFilms nice idea so ok when I was 10 in 1987 so that would be Lethal Weapon. In 1997 it would be Face/Off. In 2007 it would have to be American Gangster. In 2017 it would be Logan.
Love this concept! I'm a little confused at to how we put it together thoe. Is it just a random movie you like for each year or does the movie have to had come out that year? Is it best to the most favorite? Anyhow, love the channel.
You're favourite movie from each year you've been alive. So if you was born in 1993 and your favourite movie of that year was Jurassic Park that would be your choice for that year. 👍

The Mask of Zorro is my favorite movie so that would easily be the best 1998 flick for me. Masterpiece Imo
In The Mouth of Madness is a great selection. It is an underrated and often overlooked John Carpenter masterpiece.

This was a great video. Reminded me of films I haven’t thought of for awhile. I wasn’t going to do my list because I knew it would take a while.

Well I appreciate that! I’m glad I carry myself well.
Beards add 3-5 years too. Spoken as a proud beard wearer (sporter? owner?!)

Just turned 30 I'm 70 I hope you have a long life pally.
The dark and the wicked is really good…. The twist towards the end with the male protagonist was crazy
Pretty awesome that you did this. A couple of years ago I decided to make a list for every year of my favorite movies on Letterboxd so I can easily tell someone what my favorite movie is for each year. Is always fun to rank films like that and then I’ll even rerank sometimes after a rewatch here or there.
Makes me feel so old when I see these lists and they start in the 1990s. 😂
Thank you fellow 30 year old!

Great list Jeff!
Great video. Love the Halloween 3 pic. 👍
Awesome video, Jeff! I created a similar list on Letterboxd a while ago. Great call on Small Soldiers. I'm a couple of years younger than you, but I remember having that movie on VHS as a kid. I rewatched it when it came out on Blu-ray and it holds up very well.

Appreciate that man! Happy 31st birthday whenever you hit it, or maybe you already did!
@@JeffRauseo ironically I reached 31 back in May this year 🤣😅 Thank you so much and likewise!!!
Agreed on The Dark & the Wicked, as well! Incredibly underrated horror flick from that year. I also really dug ‘Host’ from 2020.
Fascinating idea. And excellent choices!
Great video. I might have to come up with my own list!
I did this same exercise last year, born in '93. Surprised that we only had 2 of the same. Momento and It Follows. Fun video. Love this idea.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention, when discussing "It Follows", that it's basically an Aids, or STD movie. When you put it in that context, it is a real true horror movie.
Nothing is scary about that movie
Don't want to say my age, but let's say i was born the same year A Clockwork Orange was released. It perfectly reflects my crazy 1980's teenage Punk years & my 1990's Grunge years.
I got to 1974 and choose Blazing Saddles over The Godfather II and the other classics from that year.
I watch Blazing Saddles every six months, and enjoy it every time. The Godfather films are once every 5 years, the other 'classics' I have seen them, not in a hurry to watch again
I had to make a list of my own, despite the last 30 years are my least favourite in cinema history.

Because I am much older than you Jeff, so I made my own list on my little channel of my favorite 16 movies that were released since I saw my first movie in the theater. I really liked your list and your presentation was flawless.
I love this content mate. Thanks so much.
Great Video Jeff, great channel, great everything ! keep it up man !
I absolutely love Clive Warren 19:06 . What an amazing actor ❤️
Small Soldiers is supremely underrated. Its in my Top 10 so much nostalgia. Would cry if it got a 4K release!!
Jeff, glad to see the love for Doctor Sleep, man. That movie is not even on anyone's radar.. Mike Flanagan managed to be respectful to both Kubrick and King AND deliver a fantastic film.
Nice addition to the list
Great video, I’m going to make my list now. Thank You
I agree with lot of these movies on this list, except Doctor Sleep which is nowhere as good as Joker!
It could be argued that Prisoners is the greatest thriller of all time
I second this, what a great movie all around!
@@blackphilipalvarez1305 That scene in the car with Hugh Jackman yelling at Jake Gyllenhaal is next level acting.
I’d make that argument!

Big shout out for giving props to "IT FOLLOWS". One of my favs. I just love the atmosphere. And Fury Road... I've seen it 3 times in the cinema and countless times on my tv
I love "It follows", but I'm waiting for a Japanese remake. I'd prefer it if people were being followed by a creepy Japanese schoolgirl.
@@dansator Will there be japanese remake ?!
@@HiCZoK None has been announced, but I wish there were one. As much as I like "It follows", it's a story the Japanese could do better.
Even though I don’t agree with any of your pics as best movie of the year, you still pick some good movies. Also definitely make more videos like this they’re very interesting I would be interested in finding out what you thought were the worst movies of the years.

Great list. My favorite film from my birth year is The Last Crusade.
Born in 86 and still haven't seen Labyrinth!!
Solid list man
GREAT LIST! We nearly had Ghostbusters as well for 84' but thought what did I watch more as a kid.
Awesome list, I'm 1984 and id say 80% of your list would match mine!
I love this video idea!
Really enjoyed that Jeff! ☺️ 👍

Great idea for a video and I’d post my favorite for each year but at the same time I’m also 45 years old lol so it’d take up a lot of space here.
What about posting your favourite from when you was 10,20,30,40?
@@HaveYouSeenFilms Awesome..This will be fun indeed. THANKS 😀👍
LOVE Mystic River!!! So glad to see it get some much deserved love!!!
