The biggest downside so far in my experience with the dislike button being hidden is when I click on a video and I see the amount of likes, I can't help but wonder "Is the 50 likes contrasted with 1000 dislikes? or is it 50 likes and 10 dislikes? I'll never know." Your first rebuttal point about not knowing if the videos is worth my time is the best one. Great point that the comments can be even nastier because now the people who dislike the video don't really feel like their vocie is heard. I like your idea to only allow dislike ratings to be posted for people who have watched a required length of the video (let's say 10% continuous).

And again, any video will a boosted amount of dislikes will affect creators MUCH less than what they will see in the comments.

Why make it even harder for users to know what information to trust (or at least spend their time on) when you could just... i don't know... not?

    • @SupBlub
      @SupBlub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +673

TH-cam does not care about what you want to spend your time on. They just want you to spend your time. They don't care about the accuracy of information, if you need to spend 10 minutes to find out a video was not worth watching that is not necessarily bad for them. They also really would like to be more like the other platforms and be a recommendation engine as Marques describes it. It's easier to keep people on the platform if they only consume content you provide them.

This does seem to be the wrong way to go in a time when true/valid information is harder and harder to discern from fake. This whole thing seems lazy as hell. Why not make a behind the scenes algorithm that basically works like DDOS software, looking for dislike bombs and shadow blocking the downvotes to anyone but the offenders. You also give users a behind the scenes rating based on quality of their comments and rating history compared to others. So, this user downvotes every single video they watch? Well, never count their downvotes, or count it something tiny like 1/1000th of a dislike. Again, this approach by YouiTube feels lazy, they are throwing out more data, and abandoning the huge amount of self moderation the community does. Aren't they losing valuable statistics too? Puzzled all around.

Then you don't deserve basic consideration.
Society and the world should base itself, its actions, and its self-worth on responsibility to PREVENT problems, but someone who rapes and murders a child gets an unhappy vacation in prison if found guilty, instead of being made an examples of by being horrifically and publicly destroyed or even used for medical experimentation. Their life should be made a living hell for as long as possible and society should be willing to do ANYTHING to them.
If people's mental health (happiness) is negatively affected, it's because they don't have what it takes to participate in a meaningful or appreciated way and are too weak and insubstantial to do anything but complain and shrivel up when others make it known. They can't or won't learn.
Enjoying the pandemic and global warming? Well, everyone was so focused on what's normal they didn't do a damn thing to fix anything or deal with the consequences of their actions. And big business and government went along with that, exploiting the weak, stupid, uninitiated and IRRESPONSIBLE for everything, knowing they'd come out on top while losers and the losers who tolerate them would pay through the nose for costly "solutions" to the very problems they caused themselves or were encouraged in by those seeking to take advantage of them.
Have fun going through the comments. I dislike you and the billions of people like you, but life is just. Nature isn't using a dislike button to clean up the planet. It's just wiping idiots who demand less public negative feedback on their work for the sake of their mental health off the fucking planet. Them and some people like me who are made to tolerate them out of survival.
You should be grateful for any feedback at all. It's a warning that is being removed by people nurturing the idiocy that is so common in a world that cares more about a happiness based on what's normal than on dealing with reality to actually get things right.

@MooseGoose “a way to communicate” you must have a primitive mind and can only establish communication through a button rather than a thought out response in the comments telling the creator what you didn’t like to give them a better perspective. But I can understand why primitive minds would rather hit the dislike button to confuse the creator on what they disliked. Lower forms of intelligence have a hard time understanding what communication truly is. They would rather be primitive and communicate through “good” and “bad” like cavemen

When people see a 98%+ like ratio they know they are (probably) about to watch some quality content. I work hard to hit that number. I work hard to make sure that when they click, they feel like it's worth sticking around because that little number tells them that this video is (probably) worth their time. And all of that is separate from the experience I have as a user, watching dozens of videos per day and quickly sizing them up in the way you describe in this video.

They say they're doing this "for creators" yet I've not seen a single positive comment from a creator who thinks this is actually a good idea. They say that creators can still see the dislike count in TH-cam studio but their own research shows that viewers don't bother clicking dislike when the count is hidden so the count in TH-cam studio isn't an accurate view of how many people dislike a video. It also.makes the like button meaningless without the context of dislikes to compare it to. If I have a video with 100k likes it sounds like people must really love that video. But if that same video has 900k dislikes too, it becomes obvious that, actually, 90% of people hated it. You need that context for either button to have any meaning.

About my thoughts on why TH-cam removed the dislike button.
      ---------------------
[Is removing dislike button a good decision for creator?]
Removing dislike button will not help creators, it will only make the situation worse. Once the dislike button are gone, people will only get crazier to comment nasty stuff or even make a whole video just to criticise the creator if the comment was disabled.
If that creator are getting mass dislike by people, there must be a reason people do it. Either it's the video just isn't legit, or the creator itself are a person hated by many for a valid reason.
Of course there will be trolls, but you can't avoid them by just removing the dislike button. They will find a way no matter what.
So no TH-cam you don't need to remove the dislike button, when people are getting hate from people, most of the case they deserve that. Even if they didn't deserve that, there is still no need to remove the dislike button.
TH-cam is not a kindergarten, people need to learn to embrace the toxicity people have, if they can't even handle the hate they have when their channel is small, how are they gonna handle the big amount of hate they get when they are famous?
Every famous people have haters, people need to learn to handle it, not complain and cry about it.
TH-cam isn't a kindergarten, TH-cam is a cruel place where only the right people get big.
      -----------------------------------------------
It doesn't make sense to me if the whole reason they remove the dislike button are for avoiding creator are getting hate from people and trolls. Because removing dislike button will not make the situation better.
So there might be another reason why TH-cam removed the dislike button.
      ------------------------------------
[What could be the possible reason TH-cam did it?]
Let's think about it, who got benefit from this changes? Corporation.
Corporation cannot stop people from showing how bad their product / service is if dislike button exist, they cant sue people and tell people to remove their dislikes.
So they told TH-cam to remove the dislike button. And "Small creator are getting hate" are the perfect reason to hide how they silence negative voice.
If people dare to take any further action to show/expose the negative side of their product / service, they can consider taking legal action against them.
      --------------
      [Conclusions]
"Small creator are getting hate through dislike" is just a mask to hide how corporation silence negative voice.
      [More thoughts]
Wouldn't surprise if one day TH-cam disabled comment section because it show the truth to people. And they will find a reason for it. This time it's "creator getting hate", who knows what reason can TH-cam give next.

TH-cam: we're removing the dislike button to help content creators' mental health

We agree Marques and we think you are right about more viewers taking their dissatisfaction to the comments section.

But TH-cam will still filter and censor your comments when they see them being negative

@@WildWildWeasel really? Doesn't seem to work for me even WITH the "potentially offensive comments" filter turned on.
It's likely pointless and probably filters out positive comments too. I'd just rather people take it out on a dislike button.

@@asmrplushpaws What he probably meant is not only youtube censoring police bots removed offensive comments but also creators themselves can just block certain words like "dislike", hence we will only see positive ones. I think this make onion skinned youtubers very happy as they monitor opinions 24/7 on their channel, its funny they can still see dislike and comments on hold containing "obnoxious" aka valid criticisms. This will hurt their snowflake feelings while manually removing negative opinions on their channel. 😂🤡

If the dislikes are still viewable by the creators, doesn’t that already defeat the intent of ‘protecting’ them?

No, because it disincentivizes the idiots who use it so freely which will eventually decrease the likelihood of it affecting creators in the longrun

Partly...i guess their logic is basically saving the creator from a public humiliation!

    • @randomperson8881

It does and the button will be rendered useless, so there will be no reason to use the button. Analytics for creators will be poorer, the algorithm will be poorer, quality of videos will get worse and misinformation will get worse too. Nobody I've seen or at least the vast majority of people disagree with this and the only reason is to protect disliked large creators.

Maybe they mean the fact that the dislike number is public? It’s still a bonehead move, in my opinion

2 years later and still important for every TH-cam user (and YT managers) to watch... One of these days, someone will actually use this feedback (I hope)...😢
