To this day it remains my favorite road trip in Europe.
That's a road trip that I'd love to do one day. If you do do that, be sure to record it! I've been using the Garmin Pro Ultra 30 for all of my road trips over the last 6 years, but there are likely better camera available now.
@@unclecoolie thanks for your encouraging words. I wonder, how are you able to record all the GPS data and have it displayed in your video? I'm sure it's not handmade, especially the coordinates, or else it'd take an eternity.
@@rafael.vitoria The Garmin Virb Ultra 30 records the GPS information, and the Virb software that it uses allows the user to put whatever information they want on the video. I create the graphic overlays, such as the map over the Virb-generated route line, and highway insignia separately.
Nice! I’m actually in the middle watching another TH-camr do a near complete run of a different US highway. I’d love to do something like this one day. For now the only highway I have ever fully completed was I-24.
It's worth doing. I chose US-6 for many reasons, particularly because I grew up around it in New York. I'd thought about US-50 (because I love near US-50 in Virginia), but I've already done extensive amounts of it in previous drives.
Sorry you had to cut the trip short at the end. US 6's original route through Los Angeles, etc., was along Sepulveda Blvd., I remember that much. There's a plaque in Long Beach commemorating the original western terminus. You can Google it and see, it's pretty cool!
@@unclecoolie Sepulveda, Lincoln and Sierra Highway, and I believe a segment of PCH into Long Beach. There are several conflicting route placements in Google search.
It's amazing how you did the entire US-6 route. I like the way you went on and off interstates to stay on US-6, especially in Colorado. Also, I have a great suggestion that you should do the entire US-60 from Virginia Beach, VA to Los Angeles. The western terminus of US-60 is in Arizona at I-10 and it was extended to LA a long time ago, making it the historic US-60.
Route 6 goes the entire length of Southern New England passing through Providence and Hartford. In New York State it goes through the upper outer edge of Suburban New York City. Route 6 is very scenic in Pennsylvania, going through mostly lightly populated areas (with the exception of the area near Scranton) near to the border with New York State. Route 6 then continues in Ohio to Cleveland and then makes it's way across the Midwest.
I was pleasantly surprised how nice the scenery was in Pennsylvania. I had never driven on US-6 west of Milford near the NY/NJ/PA point before this trip.
Very cool! I actually drove through a lot of Lincoln that wasn't shown here because my hotel was about 8 miles from US-6. I may include that video in the real time version, which I will upload after I upload the real time of the Wellsboro-Hammond segment.

@@unclecoolie Awesome! It is one of the best road trips I’ve done and it’s really pretty, some of the Historic portions before the actual highway starts can be confusing to follow so you may have to take occasional detours but it’s still awesome either way!
We did route 31 from Mackinac City Michigan to Mobile Alabama back in '08. It was definitely an adventure. If you ever try it just be careful. It goes through some sketchy areas. Especially in Birmingham Al.
I've considered a trip through Michigan like that, because I barely drove into Michigan during my WA-DC road trip from Jan 2022. And of course, I'll visit Sault Ste Marie when I do that. I've looked at US-31 before. Do you remember some nice views of Lake Michigan along that drive?
@unclecoolie oh yeah there definitely were some great views of Lake Michigan. Mainly between Petoskey and Traverse City. We also took a slight detour to Sleeping Bear dunes which is a must do if you're ever in NW Mich of the lower peninsula.
Thank you! Yes, the elevation indicator was at times WAY off, especially in Massachusetts. It got a lot more accurate after that until the Rockies where it lagged in the elevation climbs and descents. You can see that in my Pikes Peak video, where it was still showing 12,000 feet until almost near the summit, then it sped up to almost catch up. I'm not sure how the camera captures the elevation data exactly, given that the location coordinates are almost always spot on. I had a Garmin Navigator in my car that also showed the elevations, and it too had some lag, but not as bad as the camera. I'll have to investigate. It might be time to look for a different option.
When you came through Newton, IA, on 1st avenue before turning onto Iowa 14 to I-80 to Altoona going by adventure land .amusement park, the original alignment of 6 went west of 14 towards and through Colfax, south of Mitchellville and right through Altoona, the section of the old road is Jasper county F-48 ( think that’s been since the early 80s) . Also seen where it neanders on and off on I 70 in Colorado. Had seen an complete I-70 video done by Ryan the dictator recently. Love the sunsets when you’re in Nevada with the mountains in view.
Yeah, I tried doing the current routing of US-6, although there were several sections of road closures, so I was forced to detour. I think there were 3 different places in the Rockies alone where I had to detour. I do remember seeing the historic US-6 signs in Iowa, though.
A US route 2 road trip in the winter would be really cool. I've driven the length of it in New England but it is a whole different road on the west coast.
Great video dokument of a great country. I hv traveled some sections of the route myself. Brought me back some memories. Why dont u add some audio tracks...?
Thanks. I typically don't add audio to long time lapse videos. I have added music to the shorter ones, though, and the real time videos I upload have the ambient audio.
I considered that when I planned this earlier this summer, as well as US-30. Ultimately, US-6 won out because I grew up near it in Orange County, NY. So, it was special to drive it through there.
I spent a lot of time and effort signing the Historic Route. Very disappointing to see him turn off onto the interstate bypass when it wasn't necessary.
@@daviddarby6986I followed the route as it currently stands as of the time that I recorded this video. I deliberately avoided any historic routes due to the conflicts of the exact routes, particularly when the official signage changed. Likewise, I drove the historic portion of US-6 from Bishop, CA to LA on the last route that US-6 was assigned to; which means that I deliberately avoided Figueroa Blvd in LA for that exact reason.
Hey UC, I have a highway recommendation, US highway 51 (Korean Veterans memorial highway) from Hurley, WI to Laplace, LA (Southbound) with some nice places/towns along the way. I’ve only driven a portion of the Wisconsin leg, but it was very nice to say the least
Hello! Can I ask why you drive so much? Love your videos, by the way; I often listen to ambient, house or hip hop instrumentals while watching. Adds to the chill 😎
Hi. Thanks. I actually don't get to do these road trips that often. The last major road trip prior to this one was 2 years ago when I drove from New York to California. I've always been an explorer, and except for sitting in traffic, I enjoy driving.
Wow respect to this man for driving 3,602 Miles from the east coast to the west coast! If I had a driver license, I could never do something like that! Imagine the total price for all the gas! 😮
I spent close to $3k for this trip, which includes the drive back to the east coast, and that includes the rental car price, gas, lodging for 10 nights, food, and miscellaneous items.
Deleted my last account, but never stop watching. Thank you dude, you rocks! I know USA better then visit it :) Keep going, watching on my sofa on TV with beer in hand !!!!! P. S. Still w8ing you go route 66 :)
Thank you! I had seriously considered US-66, to the point that I even mapped out the schedule (4 days), but what ultimately changed my mind (at least for now) about doing it is all of the broken sections of the original route, starting in Illinois, where there are several dead-ends or private property sections. This came to be as a result of the fact that the original route eventually got overtaken by other routes, especially interstates like I-40, and the original route was virtually disintegrated by 1985 when the route was decommissioned. But if I drove what US-66 was in 1985, it wouldn't seem very interesting as it is now entirely other highways. There is a good documentary uploaded by Through My Lens's channel about US-66. Check that out.
@@thelonelywolf88 I've considered US-20, as well as others, such as US-40 or US-50, but US-6 was special to me, and when it went to Long Beach, it was the longest US highway.

UCP. Thought / Question. on these fast fwd videos can you loop in the road sound from other videos you got? A lot of find the road sound relaxing and the FFW videos have no sound. Just asking.
I'll look into it now that you mention it. I've been speeding up the video using Virb, which is what I use to extract the GPS data to put in the video, and Virb automatically mutes the video when sped up. I'll look into if it's possible just speeding up the video when I use Final Cut Pro, which is what I use for all of the rest of the editing. The next time lapse video will be my drive from California back to the east coast, which I'll upload after I finish out the US-6 real time parts. I'll have 6 parts altogether, with part 3 being uploaded in the next 2 weeks.
Quick question. This is a great video, but why does it occasionally fade to black and skip a few? Battery change in the camera? Just curious! Love the video.
US-6 is definitely a pretty interesting route. Originally it only ran to Erie, PA but eventually got extended into CA. Even with it ending in Bishop now instead of Long Beach, it's still the 2nd longest US route in the country. How was the highway in the desert section of Utah and Nevada? Even on a map it seems like a very barren highway. Only two towns of any size for well over 400 miles.
I agree. In my opinion, US-6, especially between Delta, UT and Tonopah, NV, is a much lonelier road that US-50 across Nevada. US-50 had a lot more traffic than US-6 did. There were times I wouldn't see another vehicle on the road for several minutes.
J ai la même vision que vous. Doit on s'estimer pauvre de ne pas pouvoir faire le voyage ou riche d'être capable de tromper notre cerveau, en lui faisant croire que c est nous qui conduisons ? 😅
I would extend U.S. 6 by co-signing it with U.S. 395 from Bishop to Bradys then have U.S. 6 replace California Highway 14 all the way to I-5 and Balboa Boulevard to connect with U.S. 101.
Great video, but I did notice throughout the Colorado segment that your GPS/altimeter seemed to be off. Loveland Pass came up around 11,300 not 11,995 and the entire drive through Vail showed it 10,100 which is about 2,000 feet higher than it really is. I wonder if the GPS was off and it was measuring the heights of the mountainsides and not the highway. Not a complaint, just an observation :)
Thank you! Yes, the elevations were off through the passes in Colorado, as well as at the beginning throughout Massachusetts. I'm not sure what the issue was, especially since the location coordinates were spot on. I'll have to investigate into it before doing a future trip.
To complete the original US 6 continue south on US 395 to what's now CA 14 to old US 99 (I-5) or San Fernando Rd. to Figueroa (now CA 110/I-110) to the Pacific Coast Highway (now CA 1) to it's terminus in Long Beach, CA near what's now CA 19, formerly US 91. Caltrans butchered the original Federal system in the state in the mid-1960's.
Now I feel sad. I miss New York's bagels, pizza, and hard rolls. I actually lived in Chester the first several years of my life, and I remember when that McDonald's was built--sometime in the mid 1980s.
I have considered doing that. In fact, I was kind of planning on doing a US-1 trip when I planned my Miami road trip that I did in January 2021, but it morphed into mainly a US-17 and FL-A1A drive.
According to Whackypedia, "George R. Stewart, author of _U.S. 40: Cross Section of the United States of America,_ initially considered US 6, but realized that 'Route 6 runs uncertainly from nowhere to nowhere, scarcely to be followed from one end to the other, except by some devoted eccentric'." So, having read that while I was trying to trace the route across Illinois, it made me wonder... Are you a "devoted eccentric"? 😆 If you are, I congratulate you. Because to me, an avid cross country bicyclist, US 6 from nowhere to nowhere, looks like it would be a great ride. Unfortunately, I done went and got old.
Haha! That might be true. The nowhere-to-nowhere part is correct, at least between Utah and California. The drive from Delta, UT to Bishop, CA is about 435 miles, and only passes through 2 towns between them. US-50 across NV is called the Loneliest Road in America, but I think US-6 in that section was much lonelier.
I made a few wrong turns. One such wrong turn happened in West Liberty, Iowa, where I missed the turn, drove for over a mile before realizing that I missed the turn, turned around and went back. I edited that out with a black fade. There were others, such as in Lincoln, Nebraska, and western Colorado as well.
What device(s) are you using to log the elevation, speed, lat. / long., temperature, time and date? What editing suite allows you to integrate all this data and the HUD-style route map?
I record the video using the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, which records the GPS information that you see. The Virb software extracts the GPS information and puts it on the video how I want it, including the white route line. I create the graphics and the skeletal map overlay of the route line separately. Then I do all of the actual video editing using Final Cut Pro. While the camera can capture temperatures using a wireless sensor, I don't use it because it wouldn't work while driving (unless I wanted to constantly display what temperature was inside the vehicle, which would be worthless). Instead, I use the temperature that is shown by the vehicle's dashboard and record what is shown about every 15-30 minutes. I then write down the temps that I memorized each time I stop. I record the video in real time, and I use a 512 GB micro SD card that can hold about 16 hours' worth of UHD video. I bring my MacBook and an external hard drive to back up the video each night.
Haha. No. It was when I was sitting in stop-and-go traffic in Omaha when the check engine light first came on showing reduced engine power. I tried trading the car in at Lincoln Airport, but they had no available cars, so I decided to continue driving, and I had issues the next day (the day that I drove to Pikes Peak) or the day after that until I got to the Utah-Nevada state line when the problem came back (you can see where I pulled over twice in a row), but I had to keep going as I was then in the middle of nowhere.
Just wanted to say this is the best road trip video production I've seen to date. I'm a driving fool and never knew about the GAR highway. Bravo -
Thank you! 😊

And a trip through Cleveland and on to Sandusky! Ah, the memories!
bucket list trip for me, thank you for your work.
My pleasure!
Unclecolie,Thanks, unreal sharing. ;))
My pleasure!
I-24 is also on my list. I intersected it several times in this trip.
Sorry you had to cut the trip short at the end. US 6's original route through Los Angeles, etc., was along Sepulveda Blvd., I remember that much. There's a plaque in Long Beach commemorating the original western terminus. You can Google it and see, it's pretty cool!
Thanks. I had some confusion as to the exact routing in the LA area. Figueroa St was also Route 6 before I-110/CA-110 came in.
@@unclecoolie Sepulveda, Lincoln and Sierra Highway, and I believe a segment of PCH into Long Beach. There are several conflicting route placements in Google search.
@@MarkL0360 Yeah.
I've considered US-60 before, mainly because I lived in Charleston, WV briefly years ago.
You went right through my small town of Butler, IN
The very first town after leaving Ohio!
I appreciate the measurements being done with the American system this time. I noticed the elevation indicator was ... quite wild.
Thanks! Yes, the camera's elevation readings were really wonky in some spots, especially during the first 20 minutes or so of this video.
Great Vid! You pass through my hometown Lincoln neb and my moms hometown Hastings,Neb
Very cool! I actually drove through a lot of Lincoln that wasn't shown here because my hotel was about 8 miles from US-6. I may include that video in the real time version, which I will upload after I upload the real time of the Wellsboro-Hammond segment.
Hillrose❣️❣️❣️ spent much of my childhood in that little town, with an Aunt and Uncle. The Uncle drove truck, had his own tractor trailers, and some farming equipment.
so many vids I see don’t take that route. Took me back home for a minute. Born in Denver had family sprinkled several places throughout Colorado and So. Cal.
Won’t bore you with the long story..

Oh wow!
Thanks.
Great video! Next you should do US 395 that also includes the Historic Route portion that starts in San Diego.
Thanks! That would be a nice trip to do. I plan to be in Vegas next year, so I may do something like that.
@@unclecoolie Awesome! It is one of the best road trips I’ve done and it’s really pretty, some of the Historic portions before the actual highway starts can be confusing to follow so you may have to take occasional detours but it’s still awesome either way!
@@MrLSB-w6g Yeah. I had several detours on this trip just from road-closures.
You’re back!
Fantastic! Can’t wait to see it all in real time.
I'm exporting day 1 now, so it should be ready for posting in a couple of days.
Wow, Uncle Coolie! I was just settling in to watch some football! Now, you’ve given me this gem! What to do?😁
😁
The fact that this is a video of a route that legit runs through my hometown (seen at 2:27:47 in this video) is awesome 😍😍
This was first on my list of US highways for the same exact reason. I grew up around US-6 in Orange County, NY.
Beautiful trip. Can't wait to watch it. Thanks😊
Thank you!
Awesome really enjoyed that, Your videos are always amazing! Great work 💯😃
Thank you!
@@HolyShnikeez_1975 Thanks. I'll keep that route in mind.
He’s back!
And I was wondering when someone would make this. Thanks for letting me live that bucket list item vicariously. That altimeter though...😡

I agree.
babe wake up new Unclecoolie Productions video just dropped
I loved the part in Nevada a lot, too, despite driving a car with the check-engine light on.
Awesome. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for your support!
A US route 2 road trip in the winter would be really cool. I've driven the length of it in New England but it is a whole different road on the west coast.
That's a route that I've considered doing when I decided to do this, along with US-20, US-30, US-50, and US-60. Maybe one day.
I would watch a realtime version too!
I just uploaded part 1 of this in real time.
YOU'RE BACK, YESSSSS
Yes, and I have more to come!
Someday in the future, you should do US 20 from Newport, OR to Boston.
I considered that when I planned this earlier this summer, as well as US-30. Ultimately, US-6 won out because I grew up near it in Orange County, NY. So, it was special to drive it through there.
@@unclecoolie I grew up on the Alternate to US6 in Cleveland (Detroit Avenue). That's why US6 holds a special place in my heart.
@@MarkL0360 That's like me with the portion in Orange County, NY.
I watch these vids on the rowing machine playing a Kraftwerk playlist
US 6 in Iowa is kind of sad. It's mostly placed onto I-80 despite the old route still being mostly accessible as county routes.
Well, Ohio likes to organize it that way because they like to collect those tolls.
perfect video to just listen to music
Hey UC, I have a highway recommendation, US highway 51 (Korean Veterans memorial highway) from Hurley, WI to Laplace, LA (Southbound) with some nice places/towns along the way. I’ve only driven a portion of the Wisconsin leg, but it was very nice to say the least
Okay, thanks. I definitely want to do more complete highway trips in the future.
@@unclecoolie DANG
Very unusual to see the California Agricultural Inspection Station closed just geographic north of Benton, CA.

I drove on it some in this video, as well as in my VA to Mt. Washington trip. I'll have to see if I get the opportunity to get to ME again.

Will you do the complete i 90 road trip
I doubt it, but I would like to drive out west on it again, maybe next spring.
Quick question. This is a great video, but why does it occasionally fade to black and skip a few? Battery change in the camera? Just curious! Love the video.
Thank you! I fade the parts where I screwed up and made a wrong turn or missed a turn.
Wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Might I suggest another road trip? This time, take US 20 from Newport, OR to Boston?
That was high on my list, along with US-6. I may do that one day.
@@unclecoolie A shorter one would be I-77 from Columbia, SC to Cleveland. That one would take 10 hours at the most.
@@MarkL0360 Back in the day, I was on I-77 a lot as I used to live in WV. That might be an option.
I would extend U.S. 6 by co-signing it with U.S. 395 from Bishop to Bradys then have U.S. 6 replace California Highway 14 all the way to I-5 and Balboa Boulevard to connect with U.S. 101.
This can be done now because no standard applies to U.S. Highways.
That's nearly the original route from the 1930s-1950s.
35:00 I would've taken a slight detour here, in order to show off the most important building in sports television: ESPN HQ!
That's true. I didn't even realize that when I was driving through there.
Hello unclecoolie could You do from new York to Atlanta?
I'll have to see what opportunities come my way in 2025. I want to visit Alaska and Hawaii as those are the only 2 states I haven't been to yet.
Yep.
56:39 you missed a great opportunity to hit an amazing bagel spot right next to the mcdonalds 😢
Now I feel sad. I miss New York's bagels, pizza, and hard rolls. I actually lived in Chester the first several years of my life, and I remember when that McDonald's was built--sometime in the mid 1980s.
do you have a full road trip either down or up US route 1 planned for the future?
I have considered doing that. In fact, I was kind of planning on doing a US-1 trip when I planned my Miami road trip that I did in January 2021, but it morphed into mainly a US-17 and FL-A1A drive.
According to Whackypedia, "George R. Stewart, author of _U.S. 40: Cross Section of the United States of America,_ initially considered US 6, but realized that 'Route 6 runs uncertainly from nowhere to nowhere, scarcely to be followed from one end to the other, except by some devoted eccentric'."
So, having read that while I was trying to trace the route across Illinois, it made me wonder...
Uncle Coolie never takes a wrong turn. Uncle Coolie never gets a speeding ticket. Uncle Coolie never gets into accidents...the list goes on!
@@unclecoolie We all do. We still love ya!
The Legendary G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) Highway!
Is the detour to Pikes Peak the reason that the car had engine problems :)
Haha.
Will the video have a faster timelapse, like 2 hours?
I might consider a hyper lapse version one day. That will be after I finish the real times of this trip, and the drive back across the country videos.
