First please note that this review relates to both Eken V5 HW and Tosee SW combined because they only can operate in combination and there is no other SW for the Eken V5, at least none that I am aware of. The doorbell looks good and manufacturing quality is just fine. It is a bit big but that is understandable as the three 18650 batteries occupy a lot of space. There is no weather protection (not that it was advertised but worth noting for those who need an outdoor solution). Vandal protection is just a minor bolt underneath however the doorbell‘s plastic case makes anything more serious just pointless. The camera resolution is way better than that of analog doorbells and the viewing angle is also wider though not as wide as in the description to that matter. My measurements show approximately 110 degrees in horizontal dimension and 70 degrees in vertical one. Night vision looks good. However there are quite a few issues which limit the device usability a lot: The doorbell doesn‘t work without Internet connection even in local LAN. This means that you are forever dependent on mercy of some anonymus server in order for the setup to operate. This service can cancel or become chargeable anytime, and there is no way to avoid it. Also you never know how your private data is processed in that server. All three batteries are connected in parallel. This is not the way LiIon batteries are supposed to be charged, normally there is a controller with a separate port for each battery, so expect much shorther batteries lifetime (hopefully not an explosion) unless you take them out each time and charge in a specialized charger. This is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE as it is related to safety. I‘d say use just one battery or don‘t use them at all. The sound is delayed, distorted a lot, very silent and echoed even within private LAN. I can‘t understand it as video doesn‘t suffer from anything like that. You can turn a mobile horizontally during the call, and the picture rotates 90 degrees and switches full screen mode automatically. However in case you hold the phone horizontally before the call the picture stays vertical unless you press the full screen button. Actually the automatic picture rotation doesn‘t work at all in such case. This is a huge disadvantage in case you want to use a tablet fixed to a wall horizontally as a display (my case). The only operation mode is 10 seconds ringing and turning video on automatically afterwards. Alternatively you can press answer button manually. It is not possible to e.g. set video to turn on instantly nor to set different ringing time etc. It is not possible to control alarms from motion detector and entry calls separately, you can only reduce the motion detector sensitivity in case you don‘t want it‘s alarms. The call is on forever unless you press „back“. Also there is no „normal“ big red call termination button nor auto disconnection timer. It is stated that the only external power supported is AC. However the micro USB connection on the backplane also works OK, just it is not accessable when the device is mounted. It is not too troublesome to make a hole in plastic and connect any 5V source but I wonder why this was not done by default. 5V DC power is much more common than AC 18V. It doesn‘t work with hidden WiFi SSID. This is not docummented anywhere and manual entering of SSID is also allowed, it just doesn't work afterwards. This took me plenty of time to figure out as my WiFi is hidden by default. The camera in day mode has plenty of purple tint, especially under incandescent light, way more than any phone camera or photo camera. Summarizing, there are some positive things about this doorbell however it looks very much unfinished and use cases are pretty limited. Some of missing features must be very easy to implement, others might be limited by the HW inside. All in all this is not what I expected based on description.
Wow! Thanks for all the info, you practically made a second opinion review and it's great! Only thing about the battery is that when using the same cells in parallel there is no issue, problems and management circuits are needed when you use series and they need balancing, in parallel they share the same voltage and having similar internal resistance makes no issues. It's actually how large capacity 18650 packs are made with banks of multiple parallel cells that are connected in series.
