the minute i heard the 15 yr old boy had to go thru 30 hours of interrogation , i knew something was wrong . then finding out he had to spend half his life in jail for something he never did is horrifying. it is unfair for him and the victim for not getting the right justice.
Reminded me of what they did to those 5 black boys from New York portrayed in “when they see us” the youngest they coerced into “confessing” to a brutal rape & attempted murder was 13 years old at the time. Shit was seriously fucked because even the victim was like “no it wasn’t them” but the police said yeeeaah well we want it to be them so case closed. Smgdh
The fact that he was also disadvantaged financially made it seem even more sus. People who are disadvantaged some way, in general - like being poorer or of a different ethnicity, etc. - tend to suffer mistreatment more often during times like these. He didn't have the status, the authority or the money, and it was him against the cops. Also, the mentions of how he retold things... it was just... such a weird way to "confess"...
THANK YOU!!! The moment I heard that plus he confessed I knew it wasn’t him. I’m still not finished watching but my immediate guess was he was bullied into taking the fall since he was the chubby kid. Plus, he claims he left sperm behind & they didn’t even bother to look to find any trace??? Also, wouldn’t someone see him buying a padlock? And such a strict school would have the store open during class time?? And he didn’t plan this but was so strong to murder her immediately? Finally, his behavior when his mom went to see him makes no sense for a guilty person. I’m glad he spoke up…now back to seeing the rest of the story 👋🏾
The fact that the killer/killers got away with this is so saddening. Multiple lives and families were destroyed that day. The way the police handled this situation was atrocious.
I hate when the Justice System gives victims and their families “False Closure”💯 I even talked about this in one of my criminology classes how the Justice System are need to be hold accountable for giving victims and their families “False Closure” by blaming the crime on a innocent victim who doesn’t even have connection to the victim .
@@princessjasmine9902don't hold your breath it's more likely you'll be brainwashed into sending these kids to prison and collecting kid pee every morning.
I’m impressed by the parents’ decision to leave her there until justice was served. They were able to look past the emotional short term and keep in mind what was truly important.
I'm impressed by the parents' decision to leave her there until justice was served. They were able to look past the emotional short term and keep in mind what was truly important.
I agree...sort of. I suspect that the police forced an interrogation of the first logical suspect they could pin it on simply because an influential family refused to remove the body until the culprit was caught.
Why was the DNA of every suspect not tested??? Why was the handwriting on the note not compared to the suspects??? Why wasn't the key to the new lock not searched for??? It really feels like this could've EASILY been solved if a proper investigation was done!!! We just ended up with 3 victims in the end and the people involved got away with everything!
because the cops already decided who their suspects were....they didnt properly investigate all roads...they just chose whatever road was given and tortured that road clear...remember its china...and probably not even a rich district....she said the average wage of people there was lower then 200 usd a month.
it's like they really never gave the victim a chance to have justice. didn't follow real leads, didn't look for other suspects. in the end, they created more victims. and the crime is left unsolved. 😔
Because probably wanted to appease the wealthy parents with political pull. So they came up with a quick and easy answer to get them and media off their back.
im just so in shock that he spent years in jail for a crime he didnt commit. rip to the victim, she didnt deserve what happened to her. no one ever does
Shock? This is every school! Most time nothing happens.in your town They got pedophiles with pee fetish getting pee from your kids and rape with fingers looking for "drugs" that's a stupid excuse to do that to kids. We really don't need you at this point but just know you did nothing.
@@piperverrill2473 That wasn't her name, did you miss where Stephanie said the names weren't public...? Asia operates differently, most cases involve pseudonyms.
I think the homeroom teacher did it. 1. He has athority and students trust him. 2. Easy access to the keys. 3. No one controlling where he is and when. 4. A fully grown adult man vs a young teenage girl. Physical strenght to quickly overpower her. 5. Visiting his GF on a school day with that transport timeline.... 6. He could literally make or break students entire lives if he wanted to, just by word and recommendations. 7. He didn't answer ANY phone calls.... Wouldn't his "gf" be one of his emergency contacts? Wouldn't they be able to contact him through her? 8. It's a common story of grown men going after teen/kid girls.
I lean more to the homeroom teacher, because logically where else would Gao go to wait out the assembly. She would go to her classroom. The teacher is there waiting for the assembly to end, too. He could have lured her to the bathroom by asking to help with a chore of cleaning something. But the boys are so suspicious for lying on Zheng like that. Why are they so involved in creating a story like this that frames another boy. And why lie on Zheng, a class president, of all people and not some outer troublesome kid. I want to know how they are involved. They are covering their own crime or are they covering the crime of someone they are scared of.
also confused in why he said she ripped up a note? when the poem was not ripped up. Maybe the theory that someone wrote her a note she tore it up and he wrote her that poem to cheer her up and confess feelings. His timeline makes no sense and the fact that he's her home room teacher and saw her everyday. Also who says to say she ran away wtf
Any person who is given a certain amount of power over others will abuse it, in literally EVERY industry ever on the entire planet. This extends far beyond law enforcement. It can be as small as charging a customer for 10 bolts and only using 2 on their car, taking the other 8 home. All the way to forcing an innocent child into confessing and sending them to prison. Power means abuse, by definition.
Another important thing to notice - Gao screamed "what are you doing". If someone she didn't know had grabbed her, her first instinct would be to scream "who are you", not "what are you doing". So it was definitely someone she knew or trusted. She only screamed after she was in the third floor, so she came there voluntarily. But why would she follow a classmate's order to come to the third floor when her class was in the second floor ? This would only happen if it was a teacher asking her to follow him to third floor.
I thought the same thing. It’s so ugly, and the fact that her father had this gut feeling that it was someone connected to the school….theres just no way
If there was someone who literally hears me screaming and asking for help, and literally hears my DYING SCREAMS, and they just think “huh. Those boys are being weird, their answers are weird”, and they brush it off as if it’s nothing, they don’t even TELL AN ADULT/FACULTY MEMEBER?! And they don’t bother to say anything until my body was found?? I would haunt their asses for all eternity
Hell, Yeah please haunt them forever! That's awful to hear someone scream and never told anyone to check? And when she disappeared, no one bothered to thoroughly check every inch of the school? How strange!
With all of this in mind, Zhang and Wang were declared innocent with Zhang being released and Wang (who already served his sentence) having his record cleared. Gao's family agreed with the verdict and acknowledged that Zhang was innocent. On January 26, 2021, Zhang was rewarded with 3.32 million yuan in compensation. On June 23, 2022, 12 officials were all held accountable and punished for this case with 8 being forensic investigators/police and the other 4 being judges. Zhang changed his name from Zhang Zhichao to Zhang Chao and moved to Jiangsu Province where he once worked as a waiter in a restaurant, worked on construction sites, and then returned to work in the catering industry. The real killer of Gao Ting remains unknown to this day.
it sickens me to know it's unsolved, but I'm just thankful Zhang was given some sort of compensation to rebuild his life, and especially thankful that the pieces of garbage who dropped the ball on this case were actually punished for it, it's so rare for that to happen T_T
I don’t know the laws in China, but interrogating a child by themselves is horribly wrong. I wish the mother was there during the interrogation, maybe things would’ve been different. And that “sorry about that” and the little chuckle after was such a slap in the face.
So this is actually also allowed in the US! It is why we have some of the highest rates of false confessions and wrongful convictions. This is an example of that
1:03:23 Remember, when someone is lying in a criminal situation, they tend to give more details than are necessary. So saying, "she just vanished." Might actually be the truth. Had she come up with some elaborate reason she was gone, then it would be suspicious. Liars use a lot of details in the hopes it seems like they are trying hard and remembering every detail.
It's so disgusting how those corrupt cops behaved. They wanted to find a low income kid to pin it on at any cost. They abused a child to wrap up their lazy and corrupt case work.
My heart breaks for Zhang and his friend. In late 2023 I received a scam call where I was tricked into thinking that I had police accusing me of being involved in drugs and I understand the psychological distress that Zhang had been in. The "police" messed with my mind for 2 hours and stole away 2k from my bank account. I couldn't imagine Zhang being in that state for 30 WHOLE HOURS. Even though my case wasn't real and I wasn't in legal trouble, it still traumatised me for months on end. Really can't fathom what it had been like for zhang
I can't believe how he was wrongfully convicted, and his life was taken away because of the abusive cops. I hope they face consequences. What a sad case all around 😢
The bad prosecutor the bad, please. The bad investigators. They will never get punishment for what they did. I hate to say it but just like the killer they got away with it
The fact that they found her body 33 DAYS LATER is astounding. And the fact that (most) Boarding schools claim that they have better safety protocols than public schools. :(
To be fair, whether it was the teacher or one of the students doesn't disprove boarding schools having better safety. Most schools can easily keep strangers out, but someone who belongs there is much different to stop if they decide to do something illegal( IE: school shooters)
I'm suing these institutions and because this represents every school not just one, the institution as a whole will collapse. The problem is when people find out the payout for the abuse is average 150k, and every kid has been abused like in the "drug testing " aka bdsm pee fetish pays a million, the governments don't have that amount of money and the kids are strapping up. Were at a black swan event either way. What I'm doing can't be stopped -palehorse
@@Jordaxiothese schools don't prepare kids for the real world and get avg 7-11k per semester they have real no skills or trades but that's not abuse to you is it?
Just for context, boarding schools in China are mostly public schools. Boarding schools is really common because schools used to be far from some families (still a thing in rural areas though) and parents wouldn’t have time to take them back home and then back to school the next day. A lot of parents only had time to pickup their children for the weekend due to work. Some don’t even have time to take them home during the weekend because if they did, their children would be alone most of the day. At school, there were at least teachers taking care of them. It’s a very different concept from what we in the west think of as boarding schools. Of course fancy ones exist, but they are not the majority. You also still pay money for public schools.
What's disturbing is this was a rich man's daughter. The police didnt properly investigate a rich man's daughter's cruel murder so imagine what they would do with a regular citizen's case
Or... Maybe because it was a rich man's daughter, they just forced out a confession. If it wasn't they wouldn't have forced innocent people to confess. Ooor.... The fact they did force a confession so hard... Makes you wonder if the home room teacher or whoever was the true criminals had ties with them 🤔🤔🤔
hearing zangs story after finally getting out of prison is genuinely so gutwrenching.. seeing him walk around his own home not remembering anything while crying out to his mother made me tear up myself. its so sad knowing justice hasnt been served and i cant imagine how gao tings family must be feeling.. overall such a sad story and sad ending for all people involved.
*I am up to 20 Reasons/clues WHY IT HAS TO BE THE HOMEROOM TEACHER* based on -the motives. The means. The change in behavior. The proximity and lies or statements that contradict eachother. 1.He didn’t report her missing 2.He knew about the letter which is not normal 4. He said she ripped up the letter but it’s found whole and he knows if they find it he needs to mention she got it because it’s not a 15 year olds writing style so he is pointing the finger. 5. Teacher would be more comfortable committing a crime in the school due to authority and being able to tell students “don’t use the bathroom” 6. He turned off his phone that day so he can’t prove he even went to a girlfriend’s house traveling over 4 hours when he could have been in that bathroom . 7. He left early and was missing from 5 pm ALLLL the way past to 7 am the next day when he misses the morning routine. 8. He told the police that she likely ran away. 9. The letter seems to be written by an adult. Not a 15 year old. It’s very deep and mentions offering the world to her using analogies which is something an older stalker type would do. 10. She’s in his homeroom where he can fixate on her and the class flower and his “girlfriend” is conviently TWO HOURS away which seems intentional because sick people want to live alone to obsess over their sick desires. 11. He offers up that he has a girlfriend almost as a “see I wouldn’t touch the girl I have a girlfriend 12. The student said “for the sake of the teacher” 13. He has the forethought to plan where and when and who and wants to feel secluded while doing it and doesn’t have to ask his parents for money so he could have purchased the lock and grab garbage bags while planning the crime. 14. He paints and inaccurate picture of her days before she was killed to throw off the scent. 15. He is the only person other than other teachers who could command her to help him or order her to come with him to the bathroom. 16. THE FLASHLIGHT! 17. If he was this sick he could revisit the crime and look at her for 33 days. 18. Erectile dysfunction. My dad is a urologist who specializes in it and it’s aa much much more common with someone the homeroom teachers age than a 15 year old boy. 19. I believe the plastic bag with her underwear and the poem in the toilet he meant to retrieve and keep we a trophy. But he knew not to go back in there as she hadn’t been found yet. 20. He knows the teachers rounds and janitors schedules so he could pick the perfect time to commit the crime and feel not as rare.
Yeah and Stephanie also mentioned how the home room teacher gave Gao a pass cuz she was sick. So he obviously knows she won’t be at the assembly and can commit his crime.
I want to also add; the kid who called Gao grass-grass used a tactic a lot of people who are guilty use. He made it seem like something was going on in the previous days that could potentially lead to a disappearance. To use a nickname like that, they may have been close and would know that she's not the type to do that. Everybody else seemed to know she wouldn't just runaway. He was also in her homeroom class. The teacher was telling students to say she ran away. I think he coerced that kid into telling people that he saw her acting strange too. Every point you made is extremely important to take into account. He is literally the ONLY one capable of these things. I think the point that also struck for me was not answering the phone and traveling 2 hours away during a work week. Aint no way, not at a Chinese boarding school. I'm from Texas it still baffled me. I never get scared when I listen to these stories, but tonight I had to turn a light on because I felt a presence.
@@lulu6479That is true, they are trying to make her into “less than a perfect victim”- situation. But I had one more thought relating to that Grass-grass -thing: If that is a comment one usually makes only towards people one is very close to, and Gao didn’t like it when he called her that, it may indicate that he “felt” like they were closer than she felt. MAYBE even so close that he would write her poetry? The poem seems “heartfelt” in there sense that they are being quite grand and dramatic with their feelings; what if he wrote it to her, realized she didn’t feel the same way at all, and got very, very angry?
my heart wrenched when i heard the facts of this case. a pretty, kind, and smart soul was killed, brutally, and not even her dead body was treated with respect, and the disgusting greedy person who did it to her was never punished.
Heart shattering... that big man cried like a child because he was deprived of childhood.... I hope he finds a person who showers him with love like his mother. The things I would do to be his friend and help him be happy...
You couldn’t have said it any better. U said an Absolute mouth full. “Shower him with love”. “The things I would do to be his friend”. I love that. You just perfectly articulated exactly what my heart has been screaming while watching this. 🙏🏻💜
A fifteen year old going through that kind of torture in the hands of police just because they couldn't do their job and just wanted to close the case and convict someone is just heartbreaking.
Right?! Reminded me of the Central Park Five. How can they look in the mirror in the morning and sleep at night?! They are sick criminals themselves! How can anyone do this to another human being, let alone a child?! This will forever be beyond me.
Yes..but also, i feel like it's normal for asian mother. Most asian mother think that their son is never making mistake even if they witness it by their own eyes.
@@enesjeiyeah i agree. it is natural of any mother to believe her child is innocent first and foremost, this mother is only seen as beautiful because her son was actually innocent
@@noxturne16think any outcome to this story is heartbreaking - it’s always heartbreaking for families involved - something that reminds of me this is a case in America where a 15 year old girl murdered a 9 year old girl. There’s videos online of the interrogation and the poor grandmother of the 15 year old breaks down in tears and has to be escorted out when her granddaughter admits to the murder.
What happened to both Zang and Gao was awful, but imagine how Gao's dad feels, to know that not only did someone get unjustfully arrested for his daughter's death, but her killer never got justice. I wonder what his reaction was to find out that his daughter never got justice in those 15 years.
Gao's father was a high-rank offical in local authority and very wealthy, my theory is he used his influence on police to force Zang's confession. He probably had been feelin pretty guilty all that years Zang was in prison.
Right as someone who was recently (ok not real recent but still) a teenage/early 20s girl the only time I've seen a teenage/early 20s guy unable to get it up was while drinking (that ol whisky dick'll getcha). Honestly, teen years it's up even if they don't want it to be at times. I think the homeroom teacher is a pretty good guess. It has to be someone from the school, student or staff and with the padlocked bathroom it's more than likely staff.
Exactly my thought went it's likely an older man. But there are lots of evidence that the police chose to ignore to close the case as soon as possible. Like come on even the testimony of the heights of the dudes inside of that bathroom didn't correspond one bit to the height of Zayne so i don't understand how nobody questionned it or pointed it out at least. 5'9 and 5'6 are vastly different heights that aren't even close enough to run with it.
@@HalloQwertzwhy do you think someone should be ashamed of having sex? As long as everyone is age appropriate and consenting it's their decision. Nobody needs to be ashamed.
It was the home room teacher. Bcs the bestfriend said in the beginning that the victim told her, the homeroom teacher assigned her to do something for the assembly that’s why she have to go to the classroom instead of going straight to the assembly. I could be wrong. But that’s just a perfect timing for the killer to do crime. This is sad and heartbreaking
I’m not entirely sure but there’s a possibility that the stench could have been covered by the other surrounding trash around it bc like they said these rooms were kind of like “organic waste” dump area
Happened to me Next door in my building my neighbour was dead for a few months and not a single neighbor smelled anything ever. We found out just because he was flooding the people below and they had to go in
Winter in Northern China, that too January which was probably the coldest even among the winter months and her clothes were off, only a bra covering her. Her body was still decomposing but at a slower rate, like if a body was kept in a freezer. Even then, there was probably some smell but then it's a restroom, that also moonlighted as a secret garbage bin, the smell probably didn't seem out of place. Plus, the door was padlocked.
As a lawyer, this is why Blackstone's ratio, "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer", is essential. Acquitting the guilty is horrible, but only one fault lies on the law in this case - justice is not served. But if an innocent is wrongfully convicted, there are two faults on the law - justice is *still* not served, and another innocent's life is ruined. No matter how much compensation you get, there's just no restitution for lost time.
@UTubeTrollPolice298 very common to have squatting toilets in asia because it's more efficient for pooping, but it's getting less common because of the inconvenience and how dirty they can get. The arrangement of the stalls and sinks are mostly due to the asian culture. More modern bathrooms in asia are becoming more like the west now due to efficiency, and most companies in asia nowadays mostly sell conventional toilets like you usually see.
@@allisonovo well depends on the country.. i live in the west and over here it’s mandatory for all houses and apartments to have a bidet, it’s considered compulsory just like a toilet..
this is also why jurors who have ONE reasonable doubt, should find them not guilty. They should take that responsibility EXTREMELY seriously. Why don't people who are about to go through jury duty, not be subjected to a course, psychological testing, and their background ran to make sure they have no bias.
I heard the excuse note and immediately my gut went teacher. The more she talks about the home room teacher the more I’m convinced. The 30 hours of interrogation and the weird way he described attacking her seemed so off from the beginning for the young boy who got sentenced. The teacher leaving early, not contacting the parents, and having a class president to cover for him make a lot of sense, and he was a trusted adult figure in her life so he had the ability to get close and know where she would be to attack her.
the fact the police didn’t think to check the old bathrooms just because it was “off limits” is just shocking to me i would’ve checked it anyway especially because it could’ve been one of the janitors
And isn’t a normal thing to check a place where people are restricted when there is someone missinb? Like things could be happening there without people knowing
It’s infuriating how the world loses such great people like this young girl, and yet the ones who commit these horrible acts get to still breathe air. I would’ve been the same age as her when this happened. It’s so tragic. The family has suffered so much bc of this monster.
yeah, she doesn't deserve that...my heart also goes to the guy wrongfully accused and convicted, he also lost a lot. It's sad the real culprit wasn't found, and clearly it was someone who knows the in and around of school.
What is hard for me to wrap my head around is, they have DNA evidence and still don't care to investigate?? Are you (police/court) really okay with telling people that you can get away with murder so easily? That the victim doesn't matter and her family who deserve answers and justice? And ~400k for an innocent life completely destroyed is just insane. That's no justice system, it's plain injustice, that's all.
Probably because Gao tings family is wealthy which made them stand out and put pressure on the police investigation (like the finders fee), the fact that the body was left there to put more pressure on the police might have been another big reason for them to find the murderer as soon as possible and find somebody to lock up and solve the case 😕
They should have tested everyone’s DNA! If the family had the funds I think they would have paid for the testing themselves, if necessary. And why don’t they reinvestigate? How are they ok with this monster walking free. I find it hard to believe this has been his only crime with the level of depravity he exhibited.
Reminds me of a case from poland. Dude was accused of killing and assaulting a 15 year old on a new years party WHILE HE WAS IN ANOTHER CITY (also he's never been to the place the girl was killed), the policemen just got a random boy, beat him up to the point "he'd even admit to killing the pope himself" and manipulated his aneswers since the man was a little... Slow? He spent 18 years in prison, getting beat up, bones broken by his co-mates, got burned with boiling water and he tried to commit suicide too because of all of the stress. As they say "justice" is served its own way in prison. His mother was there for him, they wanted the world to know the truth but noone believed them. Finally he got out but the damage is done. Its a pretty loud case, i recommend reading about it.
When I heard that Zhang was from a poor family..I just KNEW that he was framed because that is what society would most likely do to the poor. I’m so happy his mother stood by his side. The police…I’m not even surprised at the things the people in power do at this point. I’m so hurt for him! And all the hates his mom went through for standing by his side
when he said he didn’t remember anything it was so heartbreaking since he missed so much of his life, he deserves so much better i hope he lives peacefully
Spending half your life in prison for a crime you didn’t commit is beyond horrifying. I honestly don’t think I would have been able to survive, he’s extremely brave to have managed that, also his mother is an amazing woman to have dealt with the corrupt justice system and societal “shame” for all of these years. I hope the victims parents are still alive and can see justice happen for their daughter before they pass away. I’d hope the home room teachers hand writing and others, is immediately being checked for further clues. R.I.P. Gao Ting and R.I.P. the people Kenny & Zang were before they were derailed by corruption.
As far as the janitor who didn't find the body being a suspect, that actually makes more sense. Because most killers would want someone else to find the body. The other janitor is the one who came up with the plan that would require the other guy to walk through the crime scene to dispose of the bathroom trash meaning he would have to find the body.
My God. I teared up when his mom hugged him and said it's okay, it's okay my poor son. That was heartbreaking. But i am happy that he is finally, finally, free.
I started crying at the clip of him when he got home, that poor man, the poor child he was and his poor mother. The poor girl who was murdered, her poor family, I hope for their sake there’s answers to who did this and there’s justice for everyone soon. Thankyou Stephanie for bringing these lesser known cases to a wider audience, by you doing this maybe with a fresh wave of public pressure they will look into who the true perpetrator is with renewed vigor
The DNA evidence gathered should’ve been compared against that of every male at the school. The home room teacher seems to be the most likely culprit. I wonder if his DNA can still be compared against the one gathered at the crime scene.
I wonder how Gao's family is doing nowadays knowing that the actual killer of their daughter has been walking free for the past...almost twenty years now. Must've opened a supposedly closed wound and made it even worse knowing that the authority of the law convicted an innocent person into prison for half of their life just to close a case as quickly as they can.
I’ve just watched this and can’t understand why they can’t test Mr Fu’s DNA against what was found at the crime scene or any of the other suspects. I’m also disgusted by the court’s poor compensation to Mr Zhang for wrongful conviction. So much injustice. I wish Mr Zhang and his mum finds some happiness.
It’s heartbreaking how an innocent person was killed and their killer is still out there living their life normally. It is also disgusting how an innocent person was wrongly convicted of a crime that they didn’t commit. They need to open this case again and interview Peter and his friend, as well as the homeroom teacher, since they’re the most suspicious people.
Tell me how I'm literally only 7 minutes into this video and I feel I got the wind knocked out of me? Goodness gracious, this story is absolutely devastating. I'm sending so much love to her and her loved ones.
The teacher definitely seems suspicious, considering he would have full knowledge that Gao had permission to skip assembly that day, he *gave* her that permission. Seems like a premeditated crime considering the location and narrow timeframe, and the teacher would have the means. It's such a tragedy what happened to her as well as the boys who were abused and coersed into a confession that ruined their lives.
exactly, also who else would have access to these restricted bathrooms and the equipment needed to destroy the original padlock and be able to quickly replace it with a new padlock……it’s definitely a teacher/staff member because all this information points to someone who had immense access to multiple areas in the school. Police are idiotic and didn’t even TRY.
The fact that they were only kids, Zhang’s spending half of his childhood in a cell for a crime he didn’t do, it broke me when he couldn’t remember his house, and the same as Kenny. And the victim, she was only 16 and it’s so sad she didn’t got justice .
@NotVille_ Yeah, those are called like squatting toilets. Most countries in Asia has them, growing up I was always scared of those toilets because of the urban legends
Zhang Zhichao was born on May 29, 1989. After his parents were laid off from a local commercial building, they started a tissue processing business in their own home which netted the family a low income. Zhang had just entered the high school that year with Gao and with average grades. At a parent-teacher meeting, Zhang's mother heard people talking about the at the time still missing Gao and ended up asking her son about it to which he said that he didn't even know she was missing or knew her personally. Zhang based on Wang's testimony was brought in for questioning on February 12. As for the second boy, he was identified as Wang Guangchao and arrested at his home. Zhang was interrogated for 30 hours straight and on February 13 confessed to raping and murdering Gao Ting. As for Wang, he claimed that he met Zhang and agreed to guard the door for him and prevent others from entering. Wang was charged with concealing a crime and released on bail while Zhang remained imprisoned. As you may have guessed from the 30-hour interrogation Zhang's confession was less than voluntary. He had scars all over his body and couldn't stand up due to bruised knees. One of the things the police did was take off Zhang's shoes and then ask him what colour Gao's clothing is. Every time he said the wrong colour they would slap him across the face with his shoes repeatably until he blindly guessed the correct clothing colour. Wang too was tortured into providing testimony implicating Zhang. According to Zhang's confession (of which he was made to revise several times) on the morning of January 10, he woke up early before the sun had risen and read a copy of "Horror Story" that he had purchased discreetly in the school's boiler room. Because of the content of the story, he ended up wanting to make the fiction a reality and find somebody to have sex with which is where he met Gao alone and looking out a window. Zhang then approached her and held a pencil sharpener to her neck and dragged her into the men's bathroom and held her to the ground. When Gao started screaming for help he wrapped her scarf around her neck and began raping her and violating her vaginal area. When he found that Gao had died he quickly kicked down a stall door and hid her in the corner of one away from immediate view and any windows. Afterwards, that is where he claims to have met Wang a friend of his and confessed to him that he accidentally killed a person and begged him to help hide which he agreed to do and stood guard outside the bathroom while Zhang hurriedly headed to a different building on campus and purchased a padlock not compatible with the staff's keys and used it to replace the current lock to keep anyone from discovering Gao's body. Once finished the two quickly resumed their morning studies as if nothing had happened. After evening studies Zhang bought that white bag from a roommate Li Baozhuang (pseudonym) and on January 11 while class was in session snuck back into the bathroom using his keys to open the new lock and while in private violated Gao's corpse anally and with the mop handle before cutting her with a pencil sharpener claiming that he was inspired by "The Vampire" addition to the "Horror Story" series. Whenever the police found a detail of the confession not matching the evidence (such as the origin of the white bag) or autopsy results Zhang was made to revise his confession. Forensic technicians and the coroner were also present during the autopsy to correct him when he makes mistakes or even revise their own reports. When the prosecutor first met with him he confessed to being tortured by the police and asked for him to investigate and extract biological or DNA evidence. In response, the police brought him out back and slapped him repeatably and electrocuted him with an electric baton. This prosecutor who knew he had been tortured ended up being the same one prosecuting his case at trial.

Hey Stephanie! I had some cases I wanted to recommend you: 1) The Aarushi Talwar murder case 2) The Koodathayi cyanide killings 3) The Burari deaths case These cases left me speechless.
Ok, that teacher is SUPER sketchy!! What?! His all alibi doesn’t make sense, it sounds like it was made up on the spot! He could have been the only one having access to the keys and how does he know about the LETTER?? And him being “she definitely run away yeah” when everyone else who knew her said it was very unlikely! Also the phrase “I did it for the teacher” said by the guy who we KNOW lied beforehand?! He basically admitted to be covering up for a teacher who could have easily blackmailed Peter and Albert into staying silent and lying! How on earth is this man even allowed to be a teacher?! Do a DNA test come on! This all thing just proves that authorities don’t want to SOLVE cases, they want to CLOSE them! And funny enough they could even close this one….what a joke! I feel for the victim and everyone whose life was affected by this injustice!
That teacher is definitely suspicious to me. What teacher randomly leaves with work with 4 hours to go and without telling anyone and gets away with it
Ive watched this twice now and Stephanie is à brilliant story teller, and how her and her husband bounce ideas off each other, its so adorable 😍🥰, i love every channel Stephanie has❤❤
Living in China, it's scary how many times you hear about forced confessions, police brutality during interrogation, and interference with things that don't concern them. There are even cases of people who report something related to the government, but then they get arrested and forced to sign a confession letter and have an apology broadcasted wherein they say they should not spread rumours and lies. This got very out of hand during covid.
Same here in India. Not trying to ruin countries reputation but i have to speak the truth. Police here are very very awful. If anything they look like criminals to me more than protectors. Its all bad justice system too. Forced convection is like a tradition because its easy here to find a poor victim. Another thing obviously is bribary. Hugghhhh hate this really!
@@stacy3035 People should remind themselves to be skeptical when a "suspect" is interrogated for super long hours and they suddenly come forward with a signed confession.
My heart really goes out to Zhang who spent his most formative years in prison due to a wrongful conviction. I hope he can find purpose with his newfound freedom. So, I'm perplexed why the janitors think throwing the trash outside the window will be more efficient. At 22:59, you get a glimpse of how high the windows are. I can't imagine the dustpan can retain all its content if you have to flip it out the window at that height, and wouldn't the trash scatter everywhere with the wind? Just an observation lol.
I cannot believe they just dropped this case like nothing happened. 3 families were ruined the schools reputation is ruined! 😡 They need to reopen this case immediately and find out the killer! Even when the victim’s parents were/are wealthy they still didn’t get any justice and it shows how unfair/ incompetent the justice system is 😢
I was thinking the same thing his whole story is sus and the fact he told the students to tell people she ran away and the fact he has access to the key to the padlock and the fact he randomly decided to leave early knowing damn well the weekend just passed nobody misses someone that much right after they just seen them and the fact they found glass in her head and the teachers carry flashlights truthfully I 100% believe he did with my entire heart like me mango butt was saying those are basically ur children and for him to ignore the fathers calls nuuh he has something to do with it and that makes sense why the boys near the place she was murdered was lying so much the fact that he knew about that paper was way to sus especially cuz it wasn’t ripped like he said it was and it was found in her dead body I don’t understand why the fucking police are so damn lazy so willing to throw an innocent person in jail and ruin their life’s for no reason like wtf do they get paid for at this point.? Sitting around eating donuts being a disgrace to humanity.? The damn police need to learn how to do their fucking jobs way to many cases are unsolved because of lazy ass officers like why tf would you sign up to be an officer if you hate ur damn job that damn much as to where you’re willing to ruin innocent peoples life’s just to get a case over with

it’s weird that he knew about the letter at all, the info on the love letter was not available to the public. i always avoid speculating but the homeroom teacher was extremely suspicious. she went straight to see him the morning she died.
the home room teacher seems super suspicious when thinking about the address that the girl was in possession of it was like a three hour drive away and the home room teacher seems to be driving that far frequently to see his girl friend so it could be highly possible that the home room teacher had given the girl that bbq address
It just hurts so much that i started to tear up, this poor little innocent boy. I feel bad for him for having to go through that and didnt get to enjoy his childhood for being locked up in jail for something he didnt even committed on doing
I listen to a lot of police interviews of suspects and lawyers reviewing them. When you said that he was interviewed for more than 30 hours as a 15-year-old that was my first red flag that something wasn’t right about the confession.
Social worker here. The entire first hour the only thought I had was that it was an adult staff member in the school. Someone who felt they had power in the environment, but not the power to get what they want. I was so confused about the student's arrest until the end... Someone please investigate that teacher. 😨
1:05:36 How lazy any incompetent can the police be for not checking the toilets. And why did the janitor open that area after 33days. Do they Sweep that way normally? Maybe the janitor got tired of waiting for the police to find the body and thinking he's safe now and decided to open and Sweep that area. Also I thought the body starts to smell intensely after death, so was there no odour? And I can't understand why the police don't match up the DNA that was found, which would be the easiest way to identify the killer. It seems the police couldn't care less. The case should be reopen by better police as it can be solved only if the police try a little harder.
This reminds me of a case happened almost a decade ago, a girl was killed in broad daylight in a busy railway station no one happens to see the killer, but after few hours they framed a poor guy saying he was her stalker and after few days he was caught.Everyone was so raged and blaming the guy including the influencers at the time but he mysteriously died in the prison officials claim it as suicide ,but it triggered a lot of people ,Still the case is open .
it's so disgusting that she never got justice. And its equally disgusting the injustice he went through ... horrible for everyone, whilst murders walked free.
33 days to find a body in a school? A finite area? Doesn't matter if the restrooms are "restricted" and locked. They don't check them at least once a day? Or, idk, check them at least once the day a student has gone missing?

You will be surprised that this will have domino effect.
@NotVille_yes the Chinese restrooms are pretty different since a lot have the ‘hole like’ bathroom since it’s like thought of cleaner as u don’t have to sit on it
@1:10:51 Didn't the teacher Phu say in his testimony that Gao (RIP) was angry frustrated by the "love" letter and tore it to pieces, how did the letter make it intact to a bag with her panties in it... I can't wrap my head around this evidence. I just wanted to mention it, since Stephanie and her husband talked about the letter at the end and didn't make this correlation, they instead talked about how he knew about the love letter while Stephanie said Phu saw the letter in Gao hands.
From the moment at the very beginning when you mentioned the teacher, I suspected it was him. I was shocked when that boy was arrested and wondered if he was being threatened or something to take the fall for it so I was relieved to hear that he was eventually released. I think her teacher wrote the letter because it doesn't sound like something a teen would write; it sounds like an adult who thought that he was an amazing poet. I also think that he was the only one who really knew where to find Gao that morning and that she wouldn't be at the assembly. I think that he wanted to assault her but he couldn't and he hadn't meant to kill her but when he did, he went into survival mode to cover things up. All of the circumstantial evidence really points to him and while teens can commit heinous crimes, something about this one strikes me as the work of an older predator. I almost wonder if he has committed other assaults before and got away with it. I hope that they find out who did it eventually and justice is served swiftly and brutally.
Right - this doesn’t really seem like a first offense. People don’t usually escalate immediately to murder. I’m hoping if he has any other living victims they’ll feel compelled to come forward but I don’t think it’s very likely. :(
the minute i heard the 15 yr old boy had to go thru 30 hours of interrogation , i knew something was wrong . then finding out he had to spend half his life in jail for something he never did is horrifying. it is unfair for him and the victim for not getting the right justice.
Smgdh
she breezed over the 30 hour interrogation i think on purpose but as soon as i heard it i was like ?????
Yeah the 30 hour interrogation caught my attention right away too.

I agree...sort of. I suspect that the police forced an interrogation of the first logical suspect they could pin it on simply because an influential family refused to remove the body until the culprit was caught.
That’s nonsense, keeping the dead body there until the culprit was found? That’s unnecessary

Exactly, and the fact she wasnt SAd bc the rapist couldn't get it up, don't sound like a tenage boy problem

also confused in why he said she ripped up a note? when the poem was not ripped up.

@@Jordaxiothese schools don't prepare kids for the real world and get avg 7-11k per semester they have real no skills or trades but that's not abuse to you is it?
Private schools are dangerous in their own ways. So are public schools. Private schools hide things public schools do too. There's good and bad.

*I am up to 20 Reasons/clues WHY IT HAS TO BE THE HOMEROOM TEACHER* based on -the motives. The means. The change in behavior. The proximity and lies or statements that contradict eachother.
1.He didn’t report her missing
2.He knew about the letter which is not normal
4. He said she ripped up the letter but it’s found whole and he knows if they find it he needs to mention she got it because it’s not a 15 year olds writing style so he is pointing the finger.
5. Teacher would be more comfortable committing a crime in the school due to authority and being able to tell students “don’t use the bathroom”
11. He offers up that he has a girlfriend almost as a “see I wouldn’t touch the girl I have a girlfriend
12. The student said “for the sake of the teacher”
Sorry, where is clue number 3 ?
Yep
But I had one more thought relating to that Grass-grass -thing:
If that is a comment one usually makes only towards people one is very close to, and Gao didn’t like it when he called her that, it may indicate that he “felt” like they were closer than she felt.

Its DEFINITELY the home room teacher.
It’s painfully obvious
Not just the teacher... at least one of the 3 boys in the room next to the bathroom has to also have been involved. Either 2 of the 3 or 1 of the 3.
What a beautiful mother. She never doubt her son's innocence. She kept fighting even when he stopped fighting. I want to hug her.
Yes..but also, i feel like it's normal for asian mother. Most asian mother think that their son is never making mistake even if they witness it by their own eyes.

@@noxturne16think any outcome to this story is heartbreaking - it’s always heartbreaking for families involved - something that reminds of me this is a case in America where a 15 year old girl murdered a 9 year old girl. @@nadiavetz9255 i agree, i think i know what case you’re talking about as well. i feel awful for the families involved

What happened to both Zang and Gao was awful, but imagine how Gao's dad feels, to know that not only did someone get unjustfully arrested for his daughter's death, but her killer never got justice. I wonder what his reaction was to find out that his daughter never got justice in those 15 years.
He probably feels like 3 innocent lives were taken that day. Which is awful.
That’s what I was wondering too, how are Gao’s parents and family
Gao's father was a high-rank offical in local authority and very wealthy, my theory is he used his influence on police to force Zang's confession. He probably had been feelin pretty guilty all that years Zang was in prison.

Do you notice that the home room teacher provided the excuse note to miss the assembly so Mr Pho would know her location that morning.
Erectile dysfunction in a teenage boy? Nah sounds like something an older teacher would have a problem with.
Right?!

How the hell did they not smell her body for 33 days dude, that’s insane. Poor baby. Bless her soul.
I’m not entirely sure but there’s a possibility that the stench could have been covered by the other surrounding trash around it bc like they said these rooms were kind of like “organic waste” dump area
Happened to me
Next door in my building my neighbour was dead for a few months and not a single neighbor smelled anything ever. We found out just because he was flooding the people below and they had to go in
They said it was cold also so her body didn't decompose as fast as it would have in summer.
The weather it was winter and it’s the bathroom just a thought

If the victim is rich, the police may not find the suspect, but they will find someone to blame
That’s what I was thinking. The father pressured the police, which technically hindered the investigation.
Exactly

“Sorry about that” SORRY IS NOT ENOUGH.
I’ve just watched this and can’t understand why they can’t test Mr Fu’s DNA against what was found at the crime scene or any of the other suspects. It’s heartbreaking how an innocent person was killed and their killer is still out there living their life normally. It is also disgusting how an innocent person was wrongly convicted of a crime that they didn’t commit.

People should remind themselves to be skeptical when a "suspect" is interrogated for super long hours and they suddenly come forward with a signed confession.
They need to reopen this case immediately and find out the killer!
Even when the victim’s parents were/are wealthy they still didn’t get any justice and it shows how unfair/ incompetent the justice system is 😢
I think its strange how the teacher said he saw her rip up the letter, but they found it intact in the restroom
The damn police need to learn how to do their fucking jobs way to many cases are unsolved because of lazy ass officers like why tf would you sign up to be an officer if you hate ur damn job that damn much as to where you’re willing to ruin innocent peoples life’s just to get a case over with
*17 Reasons WHY IT HAS TO BE THE HOMEROOM TEACHER* below based on -the motives. The means. The change in behavior. The intentional throwing off the police and the proximity he had to her.
11. He offers up that he has a girlfriend almost as a “see I wouldn’t touch the girl I have a girlfriend
12. The student said “for the sake of the teacher”
17. If he was this sick he could revisit the crime and look at her for 33 days.
it’s weird that he knew about the letter at all, the info on the love letter was not available to the public. i always avoid speculating but the homeroom teacher was extremely suspicious. she went straight to see him the morning she died.
Exactly, I was searching for this exact comment!!!! The teacher must have done something
the home room teacher seems super suspicious when thinking about the address that the girl was in possession of it was like a three hour drive away and the home room teacher seems to be driving that far frequently to see his girl friend so it could be highly possible that the home room teacher had given the girl that bbq address
It just hurts so much that i started to tear up, this poor little innocent boy. I feel bad for him for having to go through that and didnt get to enjoy his childhood for being locked up in jail for something he didnt even committed on doing
For real, the investigator that investigate him fcking sucks
The fact that there is always someone out there who knows what happened but won’t speak is just crazy.
I'm not a social worker, but even I was thinking it had to be an adult staff member.
Peter and the homeroom teacher could’ve worked together so utterly heartbreaking what this poor girl had to go through
1:05:36 How lazy any incompetent can the police be for not checking the toilets.
This is messed up. The teacher has to be the one. He's the only one who makes sense
33 days to find a body in a school? A finite area? Doesn't matter if the restrooms are "restricted" and locked. They don't check them at least once a day? Or, idk, check them at least once the day a student has gone missing?
Exactly?! Especially an area that is "restricted" should have been at the top of the checklist
I love the way you tell us these stories. I've recommended you to almost all my friends and family because of how much I love your story telling skills. Something I like about this channel that I haven't seen as much with other true crime podcasts is that they don't go as in depth as you do and they don't seem as passionate as you do.
cases where the killer is never found and the victims are never brought to justice are the ones i hate the most
i think it is so awesome that you are hiring researchers. I love how involved you are with your content. mrs.soo, you go above and beyond in your videos. thank you so much for allowing your viewers to potentially help out with research.
When he said "Mom, I can't remember anything." and started crying, I assumed it was PTSD from the interrogation, as when he said he couldn't 'remember' anything, they would beat him up. This is such a demoralizing story, I feel bad for him.
OMG. This is so heartbreaking. This is definitely powertripping. The police were paid because they know they can bully Zhang because he is poor. 😢 You don't want this to happen to any of your loved ones. This should have a major media attention. He wasted half of his life. Those witnesses turned the suspects are the ones walking free in this world and this is why the world is so fucked. You will be surprised that this will have domino effect.
As im Chinese myself, I have heard this story before and this is such a interesting case and thank you for shining light onto it!
@NotVille_yes the Chinese restrooms are pretty different since a lot have the ‘hole like’ bathroom since it’s like thought of cleaner as u don’t have to sit on it
@NotVille_ most japanese toilets are the same, they're called squat toilets, both female and male restrooms have them i believe
both the same
@NotVille_ probably some, i dont think all of them are squat
@NotVille_ Not very much, their is mostly in bigger malls but even then it’s very rare to see
@1:10:51 Didn't the teacher Phu say in his testimony that Gao (RIP) was angry frustrated by the "love" letter and tore it to pieces, how did the letter make it intact to a bag with her panties in it...
The fact they never properly investigated him 😢
Right - this doesn’t really seem like a first offense. People don’t usually escalate immediately to murder. I’m hoping if he has any other living victims they’ll feel compelled to come forward but I don’t think it’s very likely. :(
I also immediately suspected him, even from hearing she had a note excusing her from assembly by him that morning
@@tortillachips3911 me too!
that teacher leaving early is so, so suspicious.
