"we experience all 4 seasons in the UK" As a fellow Canadian living in the UK, that gave me a chuckle 🤭 I'd only classify UK's seasons as "rain season, warmer rain season, freezing rain season" haha. Enjoyed the video!
I think Nisha did a great job! Agree with decluttering slowly over time. Definitely a more balanced way to enjoy your pieces the way it was intended when you bought them, and also re-assess if they’re still bringing enjoyment later down the line. Nice to see you posting again, Daniel!
I think it's nice from an environmental perspective to store things before giving them away. Like what she did with the suitcases. It saves the re-buy if you need something and makes donating easier if you didn't need anything.
For my relationship, ironically: my fiancé was a minimalist before I knew this was a thing lol. I would always joke on him about him wearing the same few items all the time and never buying new things. Me however was a crazy consumer with a shopping addiction. I hundreds of clothes and 80-90 pair of shoes. Now I practice minimalism and my clothes total 53 items 😅 (this doesn’t include shoes and outerwear) I’m so proud of how far I’ve come. But it took years.
Honestly I loved the idea of a minimal closet butt.... I love clothes, I love the variety and different colors so I can't expect myself to have a small closet, I will just be minimalist in areas that I feel comfortable in
This is awesome. Im excited for her.. I tried the capsule wardrobe and it was interesting. However I wasn't very happy with it. I love clothes. I enjoy participating in fashion trends. So I modified the capsule wardrobe to match my love for clothes. 1. I have a set number of faves that I own that are seasonal to rotate or shop from when the weather changes and to match the fashion seasonal. 2. I tell myself if I'm going to buy a new peice. I'm getting it to replace an existing peice in my wardrobe. 3. I give myself a budget for fall, spring, summer and winter to spend on updating my wardrobe with new peices. It's not exactly minimalist but it keeps me happy and from having a lot of stuff.
I did something similar in around 2004. I got tired of having a closet full of clothes I never wore or didn’t fit me. So, I got a selection of different colored hangers and only keep a specific number of each category of clothing. 5 dark blue hangers for jeans, 10 light blue hangers for t-shirts, 10 green hangers for casual shirts, 5 wooden hangers for suits/dress clothes, etc. That way, if I buy something new, something old has to go. I’ve been able to maintain it for almost 17 years, so I guess it’s working at this point.
I would like to congratulate you both on your beautiful addition to your family. Also Nisha I’m so proud of you. The original amount you started with is 1/3 of what I own. I know 33 for a capsule wardrobe is inspiring but not for me. But I’m so excited for your journey. ❤️
Please tell Nisha, that she is absolutely gorgeous and glowing with that mom glow. I applaud her courage to take on this challenge...it is not an easy task, especially for a North American (everything is so accessible), and especially for a woman of her cultural background. I, being a Middle Easterner myself, have struggled a lot. Middle Eastern culture nurtures exuberance, extravagance, excess... Please let her know we are all rooting for her!!!
Daniel and Nisha, just a quick aside: would Nisha’s mom’s name also be Nisha. Your Nisha looks and has mannerisms like an old friend of mine named Nisha. We were classmates in Ontario, Canada. I like that you posted this fir 2 reasons. Firstly, it reminds me that my version of minimalism is distinct from that of my husbands - and that’s okay. We are both on the same journey, just a differing places on the common path. Secondly, I’ve found the 33 pieces for 3 months rather simplistic. I live in distinct 4+ climates and I don’t have the room to store the rest of the ¾ of my clothing while using only 25% of it at a time. I have minimized a great number of items but I use all of my clothing all year by either layering on or losing layers. Variety in colour choices are great as accents, but just like a couch with very colourful cushions needs to get back to just accenting with a few fine choices; clothing too needs to be multi-functional - despite what trendy fashion magazines wish to say.
I would love to try a capsule wardrobe, it's just that I am 16 now and I have no clue how taller I will get so I would have to keep adding to my wardrobe as I get older.
Daria Andronescu has an awesome channel on capsule wardrobes but more creative than most. She makes good use of colors which to me is almost magical. It might help anyone who is trying to build a capsule wardrobe.
I can so relate to your wife. From being a store owner of a clothing store for woman, I can't not imagine having only 33 items. I love clothes. Colors, patterns, dressing by the mood ^^ But at the same time I live in a 300square feet apartment and haven't got space for everything. I decluttered my wardrobe down to 1/3 of what it was before and I'm really happy about it! Everything fits in my closet even though it still might be a lot to some people, it has improved my life a lot! :)
That's true, but to start with minimalism you have to declutter, because most people (men and women) just buy too much clothes and other stuff. After the first declutter you shouldn't have to declutter for a couple of years.
I consider myself being a minimalist, but to be fair, 33 items seems more like a challenge than something that is practical in everyday life. I am actually quite happy having a lot of t-shirts, boxers and socks. The main reason being that these are the only clothes that require regular washing and I really just to reduce the number of times I need to wash my clothes, with the main benefit of being able to fill up two large 9 liter industrial washing machines. With only 33 items, those machines would run quite empty and unnecessarily often as I eventually run out of clothes, it would be worse/less effective for the environment and also a bit more wasteful of my time. So I think there are great ways to be critical and intentional to the stuff we own. But it definitely needs to fit our lifestyles.
Watch 'A small wardrobe ' Such a great and thoughtful way to think about designing a small wardrobe, that works for woman that's not black and white... or repetitive.
I do think living in the UK does add some complications to the 'seasonal' methods. I do have a box under the bed with winter/fall clothes but the spring and even summer is still rainy and often cold/windy so it's definitely much more flexible than the ones I see online :P
I keep getting rid of clothes, it's been a slow process, but I am happy with how it's going. The thing that I think is most noticeable for me is not buying anything new unless I am replacing something that I really can't use anymore. In the last 2 years it's been a pair of black flat shoes and a chambray shirt ( which I bought second hand, it's exactly the same as the one I was replacing, I was very happy to find the exact same one 😁👍).
Random comment not actually related to the content - but I’ve noticed the subtle progress bar along the bottom when you’re presenting sponsored content - it’s nice :)
I would maybe suggest with your wife just doing a seasonal wardrobe and I think that would be a really good idea it’s really good that she’s also putting her away her maternity clothes I know a lot of minimalist do you put like those kind of stuff away because I don’t class it as it Your wife is going on a start of a journey really so it’s just the beginning for her and I think she’s doing an awesome job minimalism is what you make it and what makes you happy about things Well think I would say I know in the summer at the moment so keep the summer stuff but you can always put the winter jackets or winter fit jumpers away for like the winter capsule wardrobe and maybe capsule wardrobe just for her like you might not wear the shorts some addresses in summer so they can always be put away as well so it just depending but I think your wife is doing an awesome job for her
"It just doesn't fit me yet and I don't know if I'm just keeping it hoping that one day it'll fit me". Been there. I still have stuff that I love in the closet, but don't really like on my body and I'm holding on to them hoping that one day I'll have the "body shape needed" - that is "the body shape I think I need" - to pull that off (I understand that we can wear whatever we want whenever we want to, but can't seem to make myself really believe that is a possibility). Obviously I'm going to be giving advice I can't actually follow, but maybe try not holding on to the idea of you having to fit into clothes, it's the other way around! Clothing has a purpose, which is protecting us people from the world. Now, we have obviously given it another layer of meaning and I understand what a simple dress can make or break for us. That dress is not making right now. It's adding some sort of pressure, of going back or getting somewhere (I don't know which) where YOU fit in IT. Kindly, think about giving it away. I know that there will be someone who will love it just as much as you and will actually make them feel good, happy, content about themselves. You can always find another dress that fits you and doesn't make you feel like you have to change to enjoy putting on a nice dress to go on a picnic or whatever... I hope this doesn't read as ill intended, I just want people to feel happy. Take care.
Hello from a fellow Canadian! :) Miminization is also process for me, and not something that happened overnight. I agree that 333 might be a good starting point for most people new to capsule wardrobes or minimalism, and that it's not where people end up. Also, women can go through sizing/body changes (even without pregnancy!), and we have to account for that.
The one problem I have is washing. If I only owned one white tee, I’d have to wash it separately. Same with bright colors. For me, too much minimalism doesn’t make sense here.
Does the 50 liter backpack have the same laptop pocket as the normal backpack you made a video about, so that you can have the same easy access to your laptop?
IMO, choosing pieces for versatility is fine for some things, but downsizing your wardrobe is more likely to "stick" if you zero in on the pieces that make you feel *fantastic* when you wear them. They look good, they feel good, they fit well and flatter your body (as it is now, not as you "hope" it will be), the color or pattern is "you," etc. Then, think about what you spend most of your time doing. Do you go to 10 weddings per year? If not, you probably don't need 10 wedding-appropriate outfits, with matching shoes (and even so, you could probably do with 3 instead of 10). What type of clothing is appropriate for your work (practical, meets an office dress code, etc.) - and within that, what individual pieces really suit you, as above (look/feel/fit/flatter)?
Well, hang on, the snag with a tiny wardrobe is you may have to use your washing machine before it's full, which would majorly stress me out. Also note that our excess stuff only becomes an environmental problem when we try to dispose of it. As long as it's just sitting in the wardrobe or a suitcase, it's harmless. Lovely Nisha is absolutely right - why on earth throw out decent maternity clothes you're going to need again? And women do need more clothes than men, owing to the different expectations society places on women. Instead of wantonly disposing of items, let natural wastage whittle them down and resolve to be more intentional in future!
Its hard to let go of clothes that were from pregnancy, good memories related to ur belly growing. Just keep in mind those items might go outta style or won't fit the same way it did w/ ur first pregnancy. Paring down baby clothes will be even harder🥺💔 Your off to a great start Nisha😁
I have heard of this project 333 before and I tried it, but didn’t succeed 😅 now I own tons of shirts and pants that most of it I don’t even wear. Haha i think this is a sign to declutter my closet😅
