I've been using the 891/ATAS 120 combo ever since it got cold out here in NV. The ATAS sits on the left front fender of my pickup while the 891 just sits on the dash. This cobbed up combo works great. May someday try that 'radial' wire idea, though I have no complaints with my current setup.
Single elevated resonant radial Robbie...that's the ticket. Hold up the end with an insulated electric fence push in post. Run wire in the general direction you wish to communicate.
Well, a radial is better than no radial. Any chance that that device could be potentially used for vehicle bonding? I’m looking at an ATAS in the future for my FT-891. Awesome vid. ❤ - KF0QNM
I do not run an ATAS but I do use a Tarheel, What I have learned is a loaded coil antenna like both the Tarheel and ATAS the coil need to be above the vehicle. My jeep I used light mounts to get this higher. Will it work where you have it but tuning it can be an Issue. This is because the coil reacts with the body of the Jeep. Keep Jeep POTAing because Jeeps make great POTA vehicles.
I have wondered the same thing. I have considered putting the antenna on a door lip, but for now I’m going to wait. Right now I can go through fast food joints without fear. If I move it up, things might get crazy.
Mechanical considerations? Perhaps the same outcome could be achieved by addressing the rusty mount. Then drill tap it for your "secret weapon[s]" but yes the concept is solid 😊
I need to look at how the bumper is mounted to the Jeep. There are quite a few sites I’ve looked at talking about how to get the best ground plane from Jeeps (and their lack of metal.)
For some reason I can't get my Atas to tune. So I took it off the ladder rack. The mic issue you have to be gently to the ptt. LOL I have went threw 3 mics already on my 891 and got them from ebay. 3 for 22 dollars. 73s N3LOU
Stumbled onto your video and really like your setup especially the ft891 installed in the dash. What yr is your jeep? Im also running 891 and atas120 in my jeep. Love the combo. Great video. Kg7fxn
Mine is a 2009. I see you found the video of my design and installation. Eddie (KO4NLL) both had our AM/FM radios kick the bucket in our Jeeps. I solved my problem. He sold his and bought a dang Subaru. Hahaha.
I just pulled the trigger on a new atas 120a with a k400s bracket and will be paired to my 891 on my batman mobile 😅 hopefully will be doing som POTA on winter chill days all cozy up. Also I ordered a lido mount with a separation kit 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧
We use a fender washer with a couple extra holes when using the ATAS. Run the wire that way. Same concept, definitely seems to help.

This go I had it pointed away from civilization. Gonna have to see what happens with the next one.
@w1rcp try it dude. Hope you're feeling differently than yesterday. Stacy and I worked that pileup for an hour on the G90/EFHW, 20M.
Here to make your day! Marry Christmas

Jeeps are notorious for not having good bonding. Mine has a lift, and the body and chassis are absolutely separated with plastic risers.
Thanks - I will make a radial for mine 73

@ I understand and that is why my Tarheel with a much linger whip is on the passenger side on a Apiller light mount.

I’m going to fix this one when it finally gives out. I have another 891 in a case behind my seat. I can always borrow that one.

start by removing the mount a removing the rust , and make sure that the bumper is grounded the the rest of your jeep

I stole my wife’s truck this morning to get that good ATAS ground plane action this morning.
Your Jeep steering wheel label is upside down. 🙃
I got a good deal on it, though.
so what was the answer?
Couldn’t make heads or tails on this one. The next time I went out it was a lot better.
