That's the nice thing about Brian May, the dude's not full of himself, he knows that he doesn't have to prove himself.
His band's one of the biggest to ever exist. He's wildly intelligent and one of the most beloved names in rock history, good for him!

I appreciate Brian's honesty and humility. As a guitar player myself my other guitar influences are Steve Vai, Richie Sambora, EVH, Ritchie Blackmore, Toni Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, and many more amazing axe players.

I don’t really look at music in that way but if one could named as being best, it would be Hendrix. The way he played, wrote, and set up was a revolutionary step. But mainly I agree with Brian, I just don’t look at it as a competition.
Coincidentally, I just listened to Nuno Bettencourt tell Rick Beato that Elliot Easton might be the greatest guitar soloist of all time because you can SING every one of Elliot's solos. So I wonder what Brian thinks of Elliot Easton if making the guitar sing is what Brian considers his own greatest talent.
Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Doc Watson. Gotta give some love to the acoustic greats as well.
He's in my top 10.

The fact that Brian May earned a PhD in astrophysics after becoming a rock star proves that he has a lot of humility about the importance of his legacy as a guitarist.
And you missed the fact he was knighted by the King recently so now it's Sir Dr. Brian May - Now THAT's a legacy.

I fully agree with placing Brian as #1. There are many talented guitarists, and I have many favorites, but Dr. May is my MOST absolute favorite. He also has the best (hand-made) unique sounding guitar.

Agree with what Brian said, there's no competition. We look at bigger picture, how a guitarist create arts by the way they play, the way they play by heart for their works. Kurt Cobain is the good example just as Brian said, not a very technical guitarist but what a massive impact his playing is for the music in general.

@@Fireglo Don’t think the focus of the movie was about Brian May. I agree it wasn’t accurate in the time line, and it made all look perfect (except Freddie, of course). It was a”movie”. And yes, in interviews, including this one, Brian is humble. Movie was out 5 yrs. ago. Wish people saying” it’s because of the movie”, would give it a rest.

Amazing humble response... One thing I admire about Brian is he has ZERO ego... BTW, Nuno is an underrated amazing guitarist!
Nuno is great, and it goes in a circle, as Nuno quote Brian May as one of his main inspirations.
And don't forget that Dr May did a lot of advancements in electric guitars. His tremolo mechanism and the pickup toggle switches were light years ahead from the guitars of his time

Jeff Healy is someone that should also be mentioned great feel for guitar as he lost his sight at young age

Jeff was amazing. The first album see the light was superb.

To me, Brian is a great musician/guitar player. It doesn't matter how much more skilled the others are. Music is feeling and emotion.

No such thing as Greatest Guitarist. Everybody has their preference. This is music not sports. Everyone is different and all the greats are amazing in their own way.
I agree with you. I think that is what Brian said. I’m surprised he didn’t mention the late great Rory Gallagher. He was his influence in his early yrs.

Brian is a great guitar player, but he is more than that because he helped write and perform all those wonderful songs by Queen, for me Queen are still one of the very best bands, just great memorable songs and brilliant performances.
I can appreciate the technical players with my mind but I love Brian’s playing with my heart. And his sound is so distinctive! What’s really incredible with Queen solos is melody. How many other solos could one hum recognisably? Amazing melodies.
As a kid growing up in the 80s, Brian May, Mark Knopfler and Prince were my top 3 guitarists.

I wanted to come in here saying no way is Brian May THE best guitarist ever but his tribute to all these other guitarists was so lovely and enjoyable to watch. Such a classy response by Brian, and he really is one of the greatest for sure.
The lists dont need to be numbered - they can just have them listed by birthyear or whatever - but that sells less newspapers.
Brian’s one of the greats but there are so many. I’m old and still discovering new greats. Lots of youngsters coming up who’ve put their 10k hours in. Mike Campbell…..John Mayer etc., etc.

@@JamesPetal Yes, that was a mistake and he has said so. But in 2003, Nelson Mandela asked Brian and Roger to help with a concert for AIDS. They produced the concert and performed. Brian and Roger composed new songs at Mandela's request. IMO, if Mandela can forgive the apartheid concerts, I can too.
