Femicide Detective: Catching the Men Murdering Mexican Women | Foreign Correspondent

  • They’re called Femicide Units; Mexico’s special teams of detectives, lawyers and doctors set up to investigate violent crimes against women.
They’re the country’s solution to an entrenched problem; in the land of machismo, an average of ten women are murdered every day.
The head of Mexico City’s first Femicide Unit, Sayuri Herrera, believes the reason for the violence is simple.
‘Discrimination. Hate for who we are. It is an attempt to keep us in the place and role that society has assigned for us.”
Last year, Mexican women made their frustrations clear, as hundreds of thousands took to the streets in Mexico City. They were furious not only because of the high rates of violence but also because the men were getting away with it.
Herrera admits that old school policing wasn’t working, that police weren’t believing women’s stories.
“More weight was given in investigations to the partner’s version’, she says.
In this compelling true crime episode, correspondent Sarah Ferguson goes on the road with the femicide detectives, following them as they visit crimes scenes, gather evidence and solve cases.
“It’s very important to have women police’, says one of the female detectives. “We can put ourselves into the victim’s shoes. And tomorrow, it might be our family members, our mother…even ourselves.”
    There are some confronting scenes.
Ferguson meets a young woman in hospital as she recovers from a vicious knife attack at the hands of her ex-partner.
‘She was facing a real monster, the guy that did this to her’, says the woman’s brother.
And outside Mexico City, Ferguson speaks with the distraught mother of thirteen-year-old-Melany who was kidnapped and killed last December. Melany’s cross is pink, marking her death as a femicide.
But here, there are fewer police resources for investigating femicides and Melany’s mother has no confidence the police will catch the killer.
“The only thing I can say is that we’re in Mexico and there is a lot of impunity. So it’s impossible they’re going to catch him.”
The Minister for Women in Mexico City, Ingrid Saracibar, says they’re doing their best to change police culture.
"An institution that’s as vertical, as masculine as that of the police takes hard work to change” she says. “But of course, we aren’t satisfied. We don’t want to count the deaths of any more women.’

My younger sister was always getting into relationships with abusive men. She fled NYC and moved back to our family farm upstate to get away from her live- in boyfriend with whom she had been in business. He followed her to the farm and attacked my sister and our mother. I was away at the time. Shortly after leaving NYC, my sister married a man whom she had attended high school with. The man was divorced with two children by his first wife. I would hear stories about how this guy had pushed his first wife down several flights of stairs, etc. My sister had two children by this... person, they ended up living with his mother, his mother's boyfriend, all four children, in a small house at the end of a dead end road near our farm. There were constant fights, during the last one, the guy broke my sister's collarbone, putting her in the hospital. She finally had it with the guy, took her two kids, and moved into a shelter for abused women. When I heard about this, I contacted the sheriff, and asked a deputy that I know to relate a message to the husband: if I ever heard of him putting his hands on my sister again, he would be dealing with ME. He divorced my sister around a week later.

    • @sharonkaczorowski8690
      @sharonkaczorowski8690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The majority of these men have been abused as children and identified with the power of their abuser. We don’t know exactly why some victims identify and many do not (that also applies to female abusers). As in this case, some fit the criteria for psychosis. They are full of rage and beneath that the feeling they have no control over anything. Their greatest, most irrational fear is abandonment. So they seek to control and own their partners by any means necessary. As I said, they are unable to be rational or reasonable. All this is compounded by the cultures in which they live, including our own dominant culture in the US. I’ve witnessed mothers egging sons like this on to “control” their wives, mothers who have themselves been abused. It is very complex. Their reactions are unpredictable and the view that this is how bullies behave a myth. You were very lucky. I’m glad for your sister that you were able to save her.

      Great, but story have
      two sides. True is, ...
      men can be guilty of
      physical-violence to
      women, but women
      use mental-violence
      to men. Men are not
      as good in words as
      women do. And also,
      ppl living around the
      equator, ppl do have
      a lot of temperament.
      Emotions rise high on
      both sides in countries
      around equator, if they
      fall into a conflict. But,
I do not say it's okay to
kill a person! All I say is,
      ppl have to LEARN how
      to communicate with
      eachother. Both sides
      have to learn how to
      stay calm while they
      are communicating!
      Society needs to be
      re-educated. Learn
      how to debate with
      eachother, without
      raising a voice!!

Perhaps what I'm going to say will bother some and I apologize but it has been my experience. As a Mexican-American raised by a traditional Mexican Mother, my mother ALWAYS gave priority to my male siblings. They could never do anything wrong and would constantly tell them to find a humble good girl to marry, because they were obedient. Any other girl did not deserve them. My mother would make us females tend to our brothers to the point where we had to stand next to them in case they needed something we could get it right away while they sat and ate. I'm not saying all Mexican mothers do this but every single mother in my family would raise their male sons with such entitlement, that made them see us females worthless. EVERY SINGLE MOTHER in my family did this. They say it is the father who inculcates the Machismo in men, but I say it is the mother.

The main reason crimes against women happen in Mexico is impunity. The crimes are not always reported. The cases reported, seldom investigated. Even when the authorities know who the perps are, an arrest won't be made. Mexico State is a poor people's area. Police Officers are not properly trained to handle the cases that come their way. Also, being poorly equipped, poorly trained and operating on small budgets makes it harder to provide a good basic service. Adding to that the indifference of their politicians....poverty, lack of employment, poor education, drugs/alcohol, mental illness, and lack of basic social services play also a big role.

The difference in the quality of policing between Mexico City and the state of Mexico is due to the difference in funding.
The Police in Mexico city all fall under the Federal Government .They are well funded and are often as good as what you find in a developed nation.
Everywhere else, Police are funded by the state and given the wide economic disparities in Mexico, some have salaries even lower than many African Police.
This is also partially why the Drug Wars have never touched Mexico City except for a few incidents. As the Police there have not been corrupted, given their good salaries. On the other hand, most Police in Northern Mexico who often have poor salaries have been compromised for decades.

IT's interesting that aspects of the patriarchy have broken down, but not o0thers. Women's 'virtue' is still important, but the men do nothing to help protect it. I'm glad to see that women are deciding that they have the power to investigate and prosecute these offenders. I hope the office will become obsolete one day.

Men are the perpetrators of violence and crime at extreme rates, men create the laws in their favor, men choose which laws to enforce, and men are just the issues everywhere globally.. but enough women need to recognize men as the issue and start banding together globally.

Almost every county has some kind of hate or discrimination towards women. This has been a fact since the dawn of time, which so far, still doesn't have a definitive answer. Is it the ability to create life, something they can't do and don't go there, please, is it a "mommy" issue? I don't know, other than it's a weakness, an insecurity in men themselves, that drives them to hate, what they don't have. Thank you for throwing a light on this dark part of a human experience that needn't be.

Sex does not create life - surely if it were so there wouldn't be barrenness or childlessness in the world. Sex reminds mankind of the extent of their fall - ever since reduced to mere beasts, in their warped trinity no different that beasts of duality - so that they can only live, multiply and perish JUST LIKE THE BEASTS! The reason fallen man is called The Beast. And forsaking God to serve/submit to this Beast is called Prostitution. @@mercyjohnson6436 Thank you for taking the time to explain. Paragraph breaks may of helped me from losing which line I was reading. However, the re-reading of lines due to that helped me to better understand what I was reading, in any case.
So what, from your biblical understand is it that we need to do or change about our perceptions in order to please or understands Gods intentions for us better?
Apart from realizing that it was indeed man or at least Adam that is responsible for our fallen state and not that of Eve and to suggest anything to the contrary is a blasphemous lie that has been persistently perpetuated by the majority of man ever since.
Is there anything else that we must significantly change besides that and honouring Gods commandments?
I must add that I for one have nothing but eternal love and the upmost respect for our fellow Woman, having been entirely raised by my mother and older sister without any living close male relatives to speak of.

@@joshuaball2276 Genuinely surprised at your authenticity. Even though at first I had some misgivings wondering if you were not pulling my leg as most I come across are in the habit of doing. I did paragraph it if you notice. Only I didn't space them apart fearing it will appear too lengthy and put you off, as again most are in the habit of doing/complaining. Sorry about the slight inconvenience caused as a result. Frankly, it isn't easy at all, and there's really no short cut, navigating through all the lies before one can present the Truth. Having said that I am truly pleased to learn that you did actually read my response and succeeded in understanding it as well. I couldn't have asked for more! God be with you and lead you.
I have no reason to disbelieve you, and I take you for your word. And I daresay there are bound to be many more like yourself - you've just ignited that great hope in me. But I hope you will understand it is not enough growing up in that kind of non-misogynistic culture. One needs to be armed with the Truth, because Truth is what truly sets one free. Imagine the horror of the fact that people are actually misled to believe the lie that it is God's purpose to subjugate women unto men!!!! What an absolute contradiction to God's incomparable holiness! Gen 3:15b, like Gen 2:18, in addition to heralding the female the 'suitable helper' of God & fellowman, reiterates & testifies to her superior calling & election, complete with her God-ordained ENMITY with the Enemy. The reason, in her creation, is symbolized the redemption of His people from out of the fallen mankind - and exactly in the self-same manner as depicted in Gen 2:21-22 - proclaiming how the Lord will Himself come in His holy & eternal Flesh (hence the ONLY ONE to have come NOT BORN of the cursed seed of the fallen man) and Break His own Body, Shed His own Blood and Himself sleep the brief sleep of Death to redeem and BRING FORTH His people from out of the fallen human race - exactly as the 'female' was brought forth from out of the 'male'. The reason the male was created out of the dust of the ground (Gen 2:7) to which he would return consequent to his Fall (Gen 2:19) - thus in him symbolizing the fallen human race.
Also refer Jer 31:22, "How long will you wander, o, unfaithful woman? For the Lord has done a new thing - a woman will compass a man." Likewise, Prov 9:3, Mic 4:8 etc.
Therefore, since you've asked, let me clarify:
      a) Firstly, we ought to learn to be FAITHFUL - towards God first which would but inadvertently translate into faithfulness towards our fellowmen. He who is not faithful to God cannot hope to be faithful to his fellowman. Likewise, he who does not serve God cannot hope to serve his fellowman.
      b) Secondly, we ought to understand that false witnessing against God is an unpardonable sin - eg. Job 42:7, Jer 23:39, Matt 7:15-16, Matt 15:19, 2 Pet 2, 2 Jn 9-10, Jude 4 etc. etc. So that we may warn those who do so and hope to correct them by faithfully witnessing to the Truth.
      c) Thirdly, and finally, even if one feels inclined to enter into a matrimonial relationship with the opposite gender, let us remember such a relationship can only truly honor God if both the male and the female remain subjected to God. Exactly as the first true NT family of Joseph & Mary showcased. Both made sure they neither subjected themselves to their own will nor to one another's but to the Sovereign Will of God alone - eg. Lk 1:38, Matt 1:19-25, Matt 2:13-15, Matt 2:19-21 etc. Refer also Matt 12:50.
Love & prayers. Especially to your mom & sister. Be of good cheer and take care.

Only when the voices of women are not only tolerated, but celebrated, by men, in all aspects of society, can peace be established. So, the empowerment of women is critical to establishing world peace and human dignity.

Mothers day in USA is an act begun by Mothers Against All Wars.
There can be no peace no justice where children and women are dishonored in the fleeting hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades the gift of life intends for each one in a world where peace and all living things belong.
Condolences to the victims of violence: targets and family & friends & all witnesses for the horrors, loss, suffering .
We MAKE PEACE, we TEACH PEACE it is our PEACE . Justice ,equality, PEACE in our lifetime, for ages and eternity.
May the generations of future drop tears for joys , and may tears of joys in times of great and humanly possible peace wash away the memory of suffering of times before peace ☮️🕊️ was all we do, all we make, how we walk, how we live how we thrive.

very sick individuals in that country.I hear alot about how Mexico is progressing regarding its economy especially with US as its neighbour, Sadly there is still way too much corruption ,violence and social issues for this Country to ever develop to be par with a developed country. Another issue is the inequality gap where 40%% live in poverty, the saying the poor will one day eat the rich is true
