  • BMW iX2 Review: Style Over Substance?
The BMW iX2 looks sleek and stylish, but does it have enough substance to back up its daring design? We spent a week with BMW's latest electric crossover to find out.
    Striking Exterior Styling
There's no denying the iX2 turns heads with its low-slung roofline and chunky proportions. Up front, it gets BMW's latest design language with the blanked-off kidney grilles and thin LED headlights. Around back, the iX2 features an aggressively raked rear window and stylized LED taillights. Love it or hate it, the iX2 certainly doesn't blend into the crowd.
    Tech-Forward But Flawed Interior
Step inside and you're greeted by BMW's typical high-quality cabin with a heavy emphasis on technology. A curved 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster flows into a 10.3-inch central touchscreen, giving the dashboard a modern look. However, some cheaper plastics detract from the premium vibe, especially on higher trim models. The clean design comes at the cost of functionality too, with too many menus to navigate through for simple controls.
    Cramped But Usable Interior
While the iX2 looks sleek on the outside, that stylish shape comes at the cost of interior space. Headroom is tight for taller riders, and the rear middle seat is essentially useless except for kids. Cargo space is decent at 21 cubic feet behind the rear seats, but the sloping roofline limits practicality.
    Two Powertrain Choices
BMW offers two powertrain options for the iX2. The base eDrive20 produces 204 hp from a single rear motor, while the optional xDrive30 gets dual motors and 313 hp. Both utilize the same 64.8 kWh battery pack. Range estimates are 282 miles for the eDrive20 and 266 miles for the xDrive30 - good, but not class-leading.
Sporty But Not Exciting Driving Dynamics
The xDrive30 we tested provided punchy acceleration, hitting 60 mph in a claimed 5.6 seconds. Handling is reasonably sporty too thanks to the low center of gravity and all-wheel drive grip. However, the steering feels numb and the added battery weight blunts agility. It's a capable performer, just not a particularly exciting one to drive hard.
Solid EV With A Few Compromises
As an electric vehicle, the iX2 performs admirably with swift DC charging up to 130 kW and decent driving range for its size. Efficiency is commendable too. But when you look at packaging and interior accommodations, the sleek styling comes at the cost of practicality and space - something worth considering if you need maximum versatility. For many buyers, the more conventional BMW iX1 may make more sense.
The iX2 ends up being a bit of a mixed bag. Its exterior styling will surely turn heads and the driving experience is perfectly competent. But when you look at the tight interior accommodations, high pricing, and merely decent range, the iX2 doesn't quite justify the compromises - at least not compared to larger, more practical mainstream EV offerings. If style and tech rank above all else though, the iX2 could still be worth a look.
