Back From the Dead sounds a lot like "Let it Roll" by Divide the Day. It's amazing. According to me, The Resistance is the best song off of the new album. Skillet has made some huge mistakes over the last few years. Skillet was totally in it's prime during the "Awake" era, mainly because Jen was still a fresh face and her vocals weren't used for every song. Then of course, the fact that Korey used to sing a lot more back then is also important. Now, she almost never sings. Comatose was a hit album and I believe that with just John Cooper's voice, that album wouldn't have been half as good. Korey contributed heavily in that case. During the "Awake" era, Skillet had 3 vocalists, and now it's just 2, both of which sound extremely off when performing live, most of the times. Then there was Jonathan Chu, contributing majorly by playing the violin. Tate Olsen really made a great duo alongside Jonathan Chu, and Olsen by himself can't make a huge impact with the cello. So according to me, Skillet can really top their game by doing a few things. 1. Stop overusing Jen's vocals and make sure that while she's a singing drummer, drums are her primary instrument. Her vocals are starting to lose value due to this overuse. 2. Stop playback vocals during live performances. Even though there are parts when Jen and Korey sing a little, it's John's own voice that does backup simultaneously, most of the time. Why not just make Seth Morrison or some other guy do those backup vocals, live? I speak only for myself when I say that my ears grow sick of hearing John's voice do backup while he's already singing lead, when it comes to live performances. 3. Use Korey's vocals more, like they used to. 4. Stop lip syncing and instrumental wavering. I have seen John Cooper play the bass like he's beating a cat, and yet it sounded on point. It's clear to me that most of the time, he's not really playing the bass live, he's just carrying the instrument and wavering to look attractive, satisfy the audience and the actual sound is pre-recorded. He shouldn't take up a demanding role if he can't fulfill it. Hell, he even stops playing it during "Comatose" live performance, and we can still hear the bass in the background. He's not even making efforts to sell it, let alone actually do it live. 5. Go acoustic. Skillet has done acoustic bonus tracks, and acoustic live performances. But they haven't ever done an album or EP, solely containing acoustic elements. If they do one of those, involving new songs and acoustic versions of their old ones, that would go on to be a huge hit. Just doing remixes doesn't create an impact as huge as they think it does. 6. Find different things to write songs about. They can't always write slow ballads based on romance and worshiping (The Last Night, Stars) and fast aggressive power songs (Feel Invincible, Rise). It gets too repetitive, and then the fans start to feel like they are running out of new stuff. When I heard tracks off of "Awake", including "Hero" and "Awake and Alive", I actually felt a huge spectrum of emotions. The result was really very similar when I listened to songs off of "Comatose", and "Rise". But when it came to "Unleashed", the result was too different. I am not saying the songs are bad, but the album failed to reawaken those emotions in me.

But if there was a lot of gold, would it hold as much financial value? Even people would stop thinking of gold as better than bronze or any other metal if they would have half of their stuff made out of gold. Similarly, Jen's vocals were really valued by the fans during the "Awake" era. Why? Because she sang on only two songs. Then suddenly, during the "Rise" and "Unleashed" era, the value of her vocals went down like anything. Why? Because now she sings on literally every song. When her vocals were rare, the fans craved for it, and if Skillet were to announce "We're releasing a new single, Jen's gonna be on co-lead vocals", the fan base would get really excited. But now that her vocals aren't rare, it's totally "normal" for her to sing on a Skillet song. Sure, the fans like it, but the 'excitement' is lost.
mrknockknock1 I totally disagree. There's still a fair amount of songs she doesn't sing on. Although I haven't listened to all of Unleashed yet. And if she's a great singer, why not use her? It's not like they're going as far as to have her do whole songs or anything like that. I can still appreciate John's vocals even with her singing.

He's not even making efforts to sell it, let alone actually do it live.
5. Go acoustic. Skillet has done acoustic bonus tracks, and acoustic live performances. But they haven't ever done an album or EP, solely containing acoustic elements. If they do one of those, involving new songs and acoustic versions of their old ones, that would go on to be a huge hit. Just doing remixes doesn't create an impact as huge as they think it does.
6. Find different things to write songs about. They can't always write slow ballads based on romance and worshiping (The Last Night, Stars) and fast aggressive power songs (Feel Invincible, Rise). It gets too repetitive, and then the fans start to feel like they are running out of new stuff. When I heard tracks off of "Awake", including "Hero" and "Awake and Alive", I actually felt a huge spectrum of emotions. The result was really very similar when I listened to songs off of "Comatose", and "Rise". But when it came to "Unleashed", the result was too different. I am not saying the songs are bad, but the album failed to reawaken those emotions in me.

Gold is awesome, isn't it? But if there was a lot of gold, would it hold as much financial value? Even people would stop thinking of gold as better than bronze or any other metal if they would have half of their stuff made out of gold.
Similarly, Jen's vocals were really valued by the fans during the "Awake" era. Why? Because she sang on only two songs. Then suddenly, during the "Rise" and "Unleashed" era, the value of her vocals went down like anything. Why? Because now she sings on literally every song. When her vocals were rare, the fans craved for it, and if Skillet were to announce "We're releasing a new single, Jen's gonna be on co-lead vocals", the fan base would get really excited. But now that her vocals aren't rare, it's totally "normal" for her to sing on a Skillet song. Sure, the fans like it, but the 'excitement' is lost.
mrknockknock1 I totally disagree. There's still a fair amount of songs she doesn't sing on. Although I haven't listened to all of Unleashed yet. And if she's a great singer, why not use her? It's not like they're going as far as to have her do whole songs or anything like that. I can still appreciate John's vocals even with her singing.
