You're quite right. This is not totally Mongolian dance. The historic background of this dance drama (marriage between Princess Zhaojun of Han Dynasty and the Chief Chanyu of the steppe confederation) took place in 30 BCE. At that time the vast steppe region in the north was ruled by the Xiongnu people. (Mongol people only came one thousand years later.) In 91 CE, Xiongnu's kingdom was finally defeated by Han Dynasty and fled west, and appeared as Attila The Hun in Europe during the 5th century CE. And along the way, they probably scattered their people and left their cultural marks among the locals.

However, I would have thought I’d watched A Journey Through A Legendary Landscape Picture or Lezginka more often than this. They are all wonderful and as someone who only discovered the world of dance at 60 during lockdown by watching Circassians, I appreciate them all.
Amazing, and we can tell history has bled through in dances from many cultures, but considering there have been Mongol rule far and wide, as well as Slavic and by people of Rus its not surprising. Either way, stunning. ❤
