    When me, my brother and my mom were living in a small apartment 4 years back, we had a giant sanceveria, but not that humongous as in the video, it was a medium sized normal common sanceveria. It was potted in a cheap ceramic white pot, and it was sitting there for probably 10 years. One night, as it was sitting right in front of my moms bed on a shelf, the pressure of the tubers was so great that during the night time it exploded with such force and so loud, it felt like a dynamite stick just went off in my moms bedroom. I remember my mom was screaming for a moment her lungs out and after I run to her and turned the light on, we recognized what happened. The plant was sitting on the floor, dirt basically everywhere in the 10 squire meter bedroom, and the shards of the ceramic, well, there was about a million little pieces of ceramic scattered all over the bed sheets and floor. We run in there bare footed and from the shock we didn't realize that our feet were filled with hundreds of tiny shards. We spent the rest of the night and the following day in the hospital, getting our feet cleansed. My mom had to take antidepressants for a week, because she couldn't sleep from the shock. I tell you, it was like a TNT went off in her bedroom. Sanceveria is a dangerous plant, don't pot it in a cheap ceramic pot, use a plastic pot, because them breaking is not as explosive as the ceramic ones.

    Hi Bill! Seeing you repotting your Sansevieria on the living-room floor was almost as exhilarating as "Some Like it Hot".
    And considering the fact that Sansies like it potbound you are remarkably generous with the space you gave them in their new residence. It's like moving from a shack to Buckingham Palace. Hope your darlings are going to appreciate the exquisite service.
    Take care, Bill! Best wishes from Berlin to Ontario!

    Hi Bill, thanks for sharing your videos, I do have 3 types that I keep outside year around, sometimes in winter I cover them but they are very hardy. I learn that when you take cuttings and they grow, usually they will change color, I learned that dividing them will keep their original colors.

    Love that plant. It's a monster! Sometimes in the tropics they are used as tall, impenetrable hedges, aka 'living fences'. In some species the fragrance of the flowers is truly wonderful. If I was limited to growing only one genus, I would be happy with sansevieria.

    what a gorgeous whale fin plant!! I bought one (I am a beginner) and didn't realise to check the roots before purchasing them. I ended up with severe root rot. After trying several things to fix it, I ended up cutting off the leaf from the root ball. I'm now watching youtube videos on the best way to propagate it. Water.. soil.. and do I need rooting hormone or not etc. I have propagated some Laurentii leaves, but nothing like this guy. There is only 1 leaf to the plant! Glad to have your video.. 5 years later.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No rooting hormone needed... you can prop in water... that way you can watch root development... soil works the same... but it can take over a year before you see a new sprout

    Love Sansevarias! I have many different types, and I agree, their leaf patterns are beautiful. It's funny Bill, you were talking about re-potting in the living room, I drive my family crazy when I re-pot my plants sometimes. I will re-pot in the living room, the dining room, the bathroom, kitchen counter etc., you name it. I can make a pretty big mess, but it gets cleaned up. Looking forward to an update on this snake plant, it really is beautiful. :)

    I found one!
    I was visiting my spouse on the other side of the island, and I had to stop at this garden shop to buy flowers because I didn't have cash to buy flowers at the memorial park, and I found it!
    These days there's very little things that make me smile, but this plant made me smile. When I first saw your video seven months ago, I imagined if I had one, I'd feel like those kids lost in their back yard in the 1990's movie, 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids"... The leaves aren't that big, but their pretty big.
    I didn't notice it on yours, but there's red on the edges of the leaves. Now that I know, I think I see the red edges on yours.
    I'm going to repot mine because the pot, on my giant sensaveira is bulging. I'm going to repot mine in 2 parts potting soil, 1 part sand, and 1 part vermiculite.

    2 idea shares ...I have very small fan ( $6 - $8 ) that always runs towards my indoor cactus patch, set at a distance that keeps a very minor constant air flow,it really helps keep the plants dried out at a good rate between watering.
    2nd idea ... I keep a small stash of landscape fabric on hand and just cut swatches to place in pot bottoms at repotting and lets water flow through nice....dig your vids and commentary man !!!!!

    If you go to the local home improvement store, you can buy an “replacement window screen” for a few bucks and cut the screen part out to use for blocking those massive drainage holes! It’s cheaper than buying a roll of the stuff bc you don’t need much. I’ve been using this trick for years now and always keep a roll of screen in my gardening bag! Happy planting!

    Finally, yay! Been waiting for this! I have different kinds of Sans. From the smallest, Hanhii (I think), - to - WhiteSnakeplants, and of course, Laurentii, and so so, but prob tho, always dealing with soggy leaves or root rot. Have one that already has a baby, didn't repot it, didn't over water it, but suddenly it broke, (fell off), it had healthy roots already.. just added some wet soil tho (mistake). So, had to remove the baby from the mother plant and replant them both separately hoping they can both recover.
    And for what it's worth everytime I look at one them (Sans), not sure if it's "Masoniana" but it looks exactly like yours, only smaller. Anyway, I always remember you and wishing mine would get bigger like them!
    xo, from The Philippines! :)

    In the Virgin Islands we call that mother in law tongue. It is a hearty plant ( invasive in most cases.) One little part of the tuber makes the next plant. It takes lots of abuse, poor soil, wet conditions, survives in drought, full to bright shade. doesn't like Sun. I understand that they are great indoor plants because they absorb C02 and releases O2 You have great information. You have a friend in St John USVI.

    Hi Bill! I enjoy your videos!! Thanks for posting them! Your knowledge is priceless. I have a quick question. I'm relatively new to gardening, and I just purchased my first variety of snake plant, Sansevieria zeylanica. There are 9 plants in the pot and I would like to separate them into 9 pots so they can do their propagating thing. But, I was told by the seller, a home depot personnel, the new pots shouldn't be too big as it could "shock" the plant. They are currently in a 10" pot, so my question to you is what size pot can I place them in once separated which will give it the most success without causing harm, and is there any validity to what the home depot personnel is suggesting regarding pot size when transferring? Thanks for any input you may be able to provide! Cheers!

    Coffee filters work great for keeping soil in the pot! ☺️ it's funny how we plant lovers think our plants talk and have feelings lol. And bill you never remove old leave dry leaves??

    Hi, two things: can’t use a paper towel bec they disintegrate over time. You shd use cheese cloth or nylon underneath all the dirt. Second, you re using a terracota pot but it s glazed so the water won’t evaporate as fast. I still thumbs upped

    Bill; Suggestion: Use cut up old window screens over the drain holes, they won't rot plus keep out any creepy crawlies :) Also, I use course Pumice & Lava rock mixed w/Miracle Grow Cactus Mix for ALL my Tropicals ..

    do you know if the tubers were potted at the bottom of the original plastic pot for stability?
    also, I use a scotch-brite pad where you use paper towels

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not sure if that was the reason... or maybe over time as the rhizome spiraled it went deeper in the pot.

    Hi Bill! Sansevieria are some of my favourite plants. I'm on a waiting list to get one like this ...and waiting is NOT easy! lol The potting mix you're using is Promix brand general purpose? Do you use this mix for most of your plants? I use Promix's cactus mix for everything right now just because I want better drainage but I'm having to water a lot more frequently, which makes sense.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes it's just the general purpose soil... this one is higher porosity I am noticing a lot more perlite and they are larger particles... I still add amendments to some of the plants to meet their individual requirements.

    Whale fin sansevieria is all the rage now. One small leaf goes for about $30 at my local nursery. It's an interesting plant, but I wish the new shoots would grow out closer to the parent leaf to give the plant a bushier appearance.

    I'm gonna buy my first sansevieria whale fin! I'm a new plant lady lol and wow you just cut it like that? I'm very scared of root rot though that's my main concern :( well, hoping everything goes well and my new babies will stay with me for yeaaarrsss to come!

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really is that easy... it can take a LONG time for the babies to grow. one cutting died... but the other has rooted and is still green... but im still waiting for babies. My Sans. Starfish cutting rooted and has already sprouted a few babies.
