My lovely blue 20yr old NB lives here in a cozy garage in Western Australia and there isn't any rust anywhere on the shell. Thank god for warm climates and no salt on the roads.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I did a similar repair on my Nissan 200SX, lots of layers but now know what to expect when I do the sills on my son's MX5 track car. Top job and again, thanks for sharing
Shaping the sheet metal is my favourite part of these great videos, can you tell me the size of the blue anvil you are using as I fancy getting one , I've been having a go DIY style since last year and want to improve ,thanks
Yet another other great MX5 tutorial with some questions! 1) Are there still drip holes in the bottom of the sills to let the condensation out. 2) The inner vertical upright repair which was done with a complete plain piece off sheet metal with no access holes, how do you get cavity wax behind it and in front of it and behind the new inner sill covering it? Or is this a say 5-year repair rather than a full expensive restoration that is not justified as if you go looking for further problems you will find them, and the costs will skyrocket.
Yes moisture vents through those holes, we also drill our own holes to vent more after we have completed the job. the cavity wax can be done through the grommet in the inner arch as it offers a lot of access, but again after repair we drill holes and inject the anti corrosive coatings after the job is done then insert rubber grommets.
damn, this is wild. i learned from yt how to do body panel repair with bondo. this is the next step...wonder if i can find a place that will teach me to do this. this is so cool.
Reminds me of a mk1 I went to look at as my first one. Both sills were nothing but fibreglass and filler. Ouch! Suffice to say, I walked away from that one.
What thickness steel do you use for the rear wings? We have 2 Mk1's, one needs a little welding to get it through the MOT, the other we are thinking of stripping right down and getting chemically dipped as it's in a bad way.
the rear arch panels are prefabricated as you will see in the next video but the inners sill sections we have repaired in this video are 1mm and 1.2mm in thickness :)
Hi David , the folder is just a generic one from ebay i think they still sell them but you can buy cheaper ones that attach to a vice and work very well :)
Do you ever regret taking on a MOT repair? For instance its only a bit more money for the customer to use replacement panels and replace it back to as factory and saves you a lot of labor/headache?
Hi Frank. Replacement panels can be purchased for these jobs and you will see in the next video we do use a panel that replaces the wheel arch and outer sill section but most of the time these repairs stretch bigger than the replacements that you can buy meaning you would have to fab your own anyway. Our videos are here to show you how to replace metal when panels aren't available.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration You're using straight oxygen for MIG? Maybe you meant 100% CO2? If you are using oxygen only, can you explain why? Fantastic work! Just found this channel tonight. Thanks.
I do wonder if you’ve ever said no it’s an unrealistic repair? I had a mini when I was a kid that I stripped in my dad’s garage. Got to the point I thought I need my dad, he came and had a look and said nah scrap it.
I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO SEE YOU HITTING A HAMMER WITH A HAMMER. TWO METALS OF THE SAME HARDNESS WILL CHIP BITS OF METAL OF AT HIGH SPEED. HAS 30 YEARS HAS A TIN BASHER I HAVE SEEN A LOT OFF BAD CUTS AND PEOPLE CARTED OFF TO HOSPITAL WITH EYE INJURIES THROUGH CHIPS OF HAMMERS AND CHISELS.
Iv been hitting hammers on hammers for over 26 years, never once have I had or heard of a hammer chipping or anything like, but I do understand your concerns, play safe :)
I'm beginning to feel sorry for the tinworm, the way you guys keep digging it out and destroying its nests. It must be nearly getting extinct in Yorkshire!
This is rapidly becoming one of my "Must Watch" channels - For all MX owners - There is hope out there for our little rot boxes!
Hi Colin and thank you :) its support from all our viewers that makes it all worth wile :)

Yes it's the salt that kills them Graeme :)
Geezus, I surely wish I had the skills you guys have!
Thank you :)

大胆で思い切りなカット腐食した隠れた内部を的確に切り取り補修するのはビックリ‼️大胆でも正確に板金するのが凄い仕事が早い。

Liked, subscribed, and waiting for the next few videos, this is a difficult task that no shop will do for me
Hi, if you have a look back on our other videos you will see some similar examples, but next week this one should be almost finished :)
looks good to me!!
thank you :)
Great job!!! Could you tell me your welding setting? Thank you and have a nice day ;-)
I had no idea that cars rusted so bad in the UK. It is very common here in the Northeast USA. Anyway another great video thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I am in the UK my little Mazda 2 was a rot box steel wasn't that thick to begin with welded some patches in it and moved it on.
Shaping the sheet metal is my favourite part of these great videos, can you tell me the size of the blue anvil you are using as I fancy getting one , I've been having a go DIY style since last year and want to improve ,thanks
I will check with you and yes shaping metal is enjoyable :)
На видео отлично показано, то как не надо делать!!!)))
Thank you for your positive input.
Love these videos such talent 👏
Thank you Stephen :)
El Permatex que utilizás es a base de agua...
This one didn’t even look that bad from the outside. Shows that even a little bubbling probably means bad rust on the inside

@@yorkshirecarrestorationwhere should I drill holes to spray cavity wax in an NA Miata?
Without some internal rust treatment, like dinatrol injection, or something similar, it will just rust away again. Good welding job though.
As we state on a lot of our videos everything needs protecting after work has been carried out , thank you for your comment :)

299 ЛАЙК!

if i could, id drive the 1500 miles necessary to have my NB professionally done by you😂
Thank you for the compliment :)
What's that tool on 15:27 called where you crimp the metal and make it bend?
hi Lee , its a metal shrinker :0

Not really haha, most cars we do for customers that are uneconomical have sentimental value so money is never a factor :)
