Ho-leee, so it is true that everything is absolutely vast in the US midwest! My European mind is blown by how spacey, spread out and uncluttered the stores you filmed at were :O I'm used to game stores carrying: 1. MtG and Pokemon TCG, 2. Warhammer, 3. D&D - and then perhaps a couple alibi board games most of which are safe bet crowd pleasers like Catan, Ticket to Ride and Azul. If stores around here had this sort of selection... I can only imagine how many boxes I would try to rescue from their cruel shrink wrap prisons!
Haha, and Utah's not even the Midwest,. It's not just the Midwest that's vast and spread out. The West is also pretty spread out except for California and the Seattle and Portland metros.
Great to see positive service among all Utah game stores and its neat to see the different variety of games! Its nice to see Heebeegeebeez again, I remember seeing them in Sandy at one point and had a slick setup there at the time. As far as Target goes, I swear some executive is big on board games there to promote carrying things like Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion, Horizons of Spirit Island, et al. I vaguely recall in an old article GreaterThanGames said Target went to them asking for a Spirit Island title. I got Horizons when it finally arrived at GNG and played about 20 games so far, so much content for its price! We coincidentally got Casting Shadows recently, TeeTurtle knows how to make games and market on social media :)
I've yet to walk into a game store in Utah with poor service, most of them are so apt to go above and beyond (your store included as one of those, for sure!). I totally agree with the Target games, it feels like they have exclusive rights to sell so many of them that otherwise would be wonderful to pick up at a smaller store. I always prefer giving my business to the board game stores whenever I can, since you're really funding a place for people to get together and grow community in addition to getting great selections of games. We need more FLGSs in the world!
I'm from Utah, and have been to almost all of those game stores (that was really cool). Funny enough you missed my three favorites (End zone games in Kaysville has an insane collection which has several out of print ones, Queens Realm in Roy has a giant demo room that you can try hundreds of games and has a great owner, and Game Grid in Lehi has some really cool sales and a great selection with a nice staff). Also, If you are ever looking for another board game vacation idea, Saltcon is a local board game convention in Utah and my wife and I absolutely love it. There is a giant library of games to try, events, vendors, hot games, contests, game swap room, math trade etc). It's a great time!
So many board game stores. There are so few where i live. There is one fairly average store about 30 miles from where i live, and the staff have little interest in helping you. It's really bad in the UK. I buy all my games online. I would love to go on a board game shopping spree. Im super jealous!
I usually have to purchase mine online, as we are pretty far away from these stores, but I'm so grateful that they are at least somewhat accessible to us! There are so many games I wouldn't know about otherwise! :)
Nice review - and now I have a couple more destinations for my annual "crawl". Oasis is one of my favorites; they have a great used selection, and the are generous in their used game trade in values. However parking's a little tough....but do eat at the Chinese restaurant next door! Next time try End Zone Games in Clearfield, they have a HUGE inventory and a lot of square footage just packed tightly with options.
I'm going to have to try that restaurant next time we head down there, it sounds delicious! And I had someone else recommend End Zone Games, too, so I'm going to have to check it out!
Envious! In my country, the only real option for the hobby is to buy everything online. Stores are few and far between and carry the same stuff anyway.
Wonderful haul! So lucky to have all those amazing store options. I played Chronicles of Crime for the first time this week and it has shot to #1 of my favourite games ever. Hope you enjoy playing too 😊
I wish we have that many board game shops to choose from in Australia that are fairly priced! XD Sadly no Spirit Island in this haul hahahaha but looking forward to hear your opinions on Unmatched! :)
We tend to get quite a few South American passerbys and occasional Australian traveler who bulks up on games to take back home, be it cheaper or just unavailable in the country. Usually deciding what luggage to sacrifice to carry them home. One couple I think got Gloomhaven, where I imagine after much consideration, left their friend on the curb while they strapped an airplane seat belt on Gloomhaven, followed by gently patting it.
Shopping spree! I’m from Salt Lake and have visit most of those stores, Game Night Games being my go to, sounds like you talked with Derrick and he’s amazing! I haven’t been to those two stores in Ogden, but from your video it looks like I need to give them a try. Enjoy your new games! I’ve been playing many games from the Unmatched series lately and have been enjoying them, definitely try Unmatched Tales to Amaze, it’s fun to play co-op for a change
Nah that Derrek is an awkward dork, all he does is play Age of Innovation with the alternate solo variant he made while hogging all the kitchen table space. 😊
I bought Charterstone about 6 years ago. Played with my siblings and our partners so there were 6 of us. We never finished it because life got in the way, but it was a rrally nice, engaging and fun game. I hope you enjoy it 😁
I think you'll both love Unmatched. I'm a little surprised you haven't tried it yet. Each character plays vastly different but each deck does have a few identical cards. The artwork for the cards are amazing!! My personal favorite is Cobble and Fog which features Dracula, The Invisible Man, Jekyll & Hyde, and Sherlock Holmes.
I've played Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game once and really enjoyed it. It reminded me of Star Realms but with more to think about when buying cards since some cards can only be purchased by one side. Also, it's pretty interesting how some cards in the market can be attacked, and I like how hit points are spread across multiple planets with unique powers.
Fun video, I went to Wal-mart to get Mind the Gap due to our local brick and mortar stores not carrying it so I don't think there is any shame in going to Target for a game!
As a game store, there should never be shame, just the love of the game! At least until your friend launches an all out surprise attack against your pieces after pretending to ally with you for 3 hours.
Great haul, I enjoyed being able to see the inside of all the stores you visited! Just fyi I have been in many D&D game groups and a very small amount of people use voices. Honestly I prefer when people don't use voices. I think voices should be left to the professionals.
I am guilty of doing silly voices in my games, but I stick to voices and characters I do comfortably for long stretches with as if I was reading a bedtime story. They likely fail more than succeed, but when the players start imitating a character voice, it feels i'm at least onto something. :)
PLEASE HELP I saw in one of your videos a space 4X game that you said you usually don’t like this kind of games but you liked this one. I think in the game title the word beyond was in it. A very new game that it’s not out yet. I am going through your videos and I can’t find it please hellpp😅
Hiya! Do you accept review copies? I've looked for a way to reach out to you and didn't find an email. We make Moonrakers, Veiled Fate, Mythic Mischief, and Fractured Sky for reference.
I wish you spent time showing the games as you talk about them. I want to see the cards and boards and components. Too many of your videos are just you holding up box after box after box,
I put B roll of games in all of my board game bites and top 10ish videos! Videos like this are more for displaying what we did, and I plan on putting all of these games and good quality B roll in more in-depths reviews in the future! :)

Haha it's a blessing and a curse, that's for sure! ;)
Haha, and Utah's not even the Midwest,. It's not just the Midwest that's vast and spread out. The West is also pretty spread out except for California and the Seattle and Portland metros.
And yet we still struggle with what to carry at our store due to lack of space at our store haha.
Lots of great stores and purchases. Babylonia is likely my fave you picked up

Next time we go to Utah I'll have to check those out! And I want to try to go to Saltcon this year, we'll have to see if we can make it happen!
Great video, I’ve been to a few of these stores, I agree they are great. Nice of you to support them!

That's usually the case for us, but going on vacation to a big city definitely helps! ;)
Either you guys are loaded, or your house is a shack apart from the nice filming studio full of board games. Glad you had a nice holiday though.
Haha neither, we're just really strict budgeters!
Wonderful haul! So lucky to have all those amazing store options.

I just bought Spirit Island. Got everything all at once so feeling a bit overwhelmed but looking forward to getting in some solo plays at the weekend

Hey my wife and I live in southern utah. Small world, we'll have to check out some of those game stores you went to! Thanks for the fun video.
That's so cool! Thank you so much!
Now we wait for the collab with JerryrigEverything, Afterevenfall, and Mark Rober if he stops in the area.
That would be so fun!

I'm so excited to play it!

Oh, and axolotls are adorable!!
It is really similar to Star Realms, but I definitely agree! I like the added elements Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game brings with it!

That's good to know! I feel like there's still so much for me to learn about D&D before I try it, but I'm dying to!
I am guilty of doing silly voices in my games, but I stick to voices and characters I do comfortably for long stretches with as if I was reading a bedtime story. They likely fail more than succeed, but when the players start imitating a character voice, it feels i'm at least onto something. :)
Star Wars the deck builder is one of my favorite 2 player games along with radlands
I spy with my eye Till Dawn @ 1:50.
PLEASE HELP

No problem! It's in my newest video, the game is Beyond the Event Horizon. It will be on kickstarter on Wednesday!

Third!
"The Number" is a great warm up game when you're waiting for people to arrive for your games night. (Best played at 5P.)
That's great to know!

I agree it would be nice to talk for a couple seconds of the game, would help with the flow of the video.
