There is somethin' so goddang adorable about watching someone who has never seen Starcraft get a kick out of just how enjoyable the SC2 trailers were. Absolutely love it. Also absolutely agree with you on the visual aspects. The first trailer really emphasizes the "Used Future" trope and it's bloody glorious.
So I know a few other folks have talked it through but here's a very quick explanation that probably won't do justice to the lore in its entirely.
    1. The games take place in a region of space called the Koprulu Sector, basically a whole bunch of humanity got exiled out a long time back and due to mistakes in their ships navigation, they overshot the endpoint and landed out there. They set up their own governments and tried to carve out a living. They call themselves "Terrans" in reference to Earth. They're all sorta space cowboys in a lot of ways, lot of country rock and ma' and paw charm to them.
    2. The Wings of Liberty trailer. The narrator is a character who is essentially the Emperor of the single biggest collection of Terran planets. He's a tyrant who you spend most of the 1st game working with. What this video shows is how a standard Marine is suited up. Almost to a man they're all resocialized convicts who basically get deployed in exchange for their freedom when their service runs out. The trailer is that tyrant telling this marine that he'll go free, but he'll carry his cell with him. It's simple compared to the others, but it's great in tone and in terms of being a trailer really helped build up that *something big* was about to happen for fans of the earlier games (or new players who may want to jump in now.).
    3. The Heart of the Swarm trailer. This one focuses on the Zerg Swarm, essentially an endless tide of space bugs that are hyper adaptable, much akin to Tyrannids in 40k. So in this one ,the narrator is the Queen of Blades, a woman named Sarah Kerrigan. She used to be a Terran special forces soldier who worked for the tyrant narrating the first trailer. During a mission(In Starcraft 1) he left her for dead after luring the Swarm to a planet. Unfortunately, the aliens didn't kill her. They infested her with a virus, to create the ultimate psychically active commander. And now, under her command, when the Swarm invades a planet, they cluster up inside those gigantic flying creatures to survive the vacuum of space, and then it shoots them off onto the planet in massive numbers. They overwhelm defenses with sheer numbers of gnashing claws and scything blades. And her ultimate goal is to invade the planet that tyrant lives on, and kill him dead. (Fun fact: the Tyrant? He's the guy that statue is made to look like. His name is Arcturus Mengsk.) To understand the last bit with the "It was all a vision?" angle, you'd have to play Wings of Liberty to understand what is going on with Sarah.
    4. The Legacy of the Void trailer. So this one is a bit longer and it's all about the Protoss, the last faction active in the Sector. They're a group of incredibly psychically active aliens. As shown in the trailers, they don't have mouths and instead share their thoughts and emotions using those long dreadlock like things on the back of their heads. Where the Terrans focus on gunfire and entrenchments with their tanks, guns, and aircraft; the Zerg with sheer weight of biomass crashing down on planets, Protoss are more mystical. They essentially have space swords and their psychic powers, and ultimately 1:1 they are significantly more dangerous than any of their enemies. As we saw in the Heart of the Swarm trailer, that big bug with the giant claws can literally step on a tank used by the Terrans, but those two mages who fused together could physically bodycheck the thing.
In the 1st Starcraft game, their homeworld was overrun by the Zerg and they've always wanted to try and take it back. So what this group is doing is trying to create a beachhead. The warriors (Zealots) and mages (High Templar) just need to hold out long enough for that little robot to create that gold and crystalline structure which essentially works like a stable beacon for a wide area. What's weird about them is that they don't build things on the battlefield, instead they set up a beacon that physically warps the building into position, so while it's a black hole looking thing, it's their advanced technology teleporting the entire structure in place. That structure just happens to be really important for any Protoss encampment because it both opens up the teleportation of troops as well as powers all their defenses.
So that's all the TLDR for this, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game trailers and by all means do go play them. Wings of Liberty is bloody free in entirety nowadays so it's a nice starting point where you get to play as the humans before trying anything odd.

Wasn't Tychus' suit special because his is the only one with the "mobile cell" configuration? In exchange for freedom he was assigned to spy on Raynor and kill him. Only until then would they remove his suit. Therefore, I presume the standard Marine suits are removable.

Since i cant find anyone who has explained it:
When you said someone explain the Queen of Blades to you, here is a short summary
The Queen of Blades was originally a Terran Ghost (a recon sniper basically) named Sarah Kerrigan. Kerrigan is special in that not only is she a pretty skilled ghost, she is also a powerful psychic. she was on a mission and was swarmed by the Zerg (the bug alien things) and abandoned by a guy named Arcturus Mengsk (the guy talking in the first cinematic you watched). Instead of being killed by the zerg she was taken in by the Zerg Overmind and reborn as the Queen of Blades, which was a human/zerg hybrid and being that she is a psychic that made her crazy powerful.
Cut to some time later in the story:
eventually she loses her connection to the zerg and goes back to being MOSTLY human. she was in a cell/lab sleeping and what you saw was her having a dream or nightmare if you will. as you can see by her hair, she is still partially zerg..but she is no longer evil or running off zerg instinct or being controlled by the Overmind.
if i missed anything important, feel free to chime in

I would add that the key takeaways leading into the first cinematic is that at the time Kerrigan was in control of all known Zerg (bugs). Through treachery and deceit she was able to take the Protoss (race in 3rd cinematic) homeworld and become "Queen Bitch of the Universe" her words not mine. You play the part of her love interest (pre-bug). The guy in the cinematic is the love interest's friend who is sent to assassinate Kerrigan after she's been turned back into a human by the love interest. Ultimately, cinematic guy dies. In this game you play the humans.
Going into the second cinematic, everyone knows that we'll be playing the bugs in this expansion. At this point, we know that Kerrigan is probably back to human now, but we see her dreaming of taking down the guy who abandoned her way back when using her Zerg powers. It appears to have been a dream, and she seems concerned that she had that dream because it's certainly possible that she still has the power to do this. In the game, she ultimately is able to exact her revenge by embracing her Zerg side, but she's still able to keep her humanity. Now, Kerrigan sets her sights on stopping a God that's coming to end the universe.
Third cinematic, we're going to be the Protoss. I feel like this cinematic needs the most explanation since most of it was "look how cool this in-game concept looks as a realistic thing." Their goal is to take back their home-world, but they must sacrifice tradition in order to face the God that wants to destroy the universe.
First scene, that's a Nexus, the Protoss's main building that is basically their castle, but we see that everything has been kind of taken over by the Zerg. Then, when they show all the Protoss guys standing together, the floaty guys are Templar, the blade guys are Zealots, and the little ball in the back is a Probe. The Templar are spell-casters and you can combine two of them to create the giant Archon we see fight the Ultralisk (giant stompy bug). We expect them to do some cool things. The Zealots are close-range fighters that charge into battle. When we see them charge the rolly green balls, those are Banelings. They're basically suicide bombers so the Zealot charging into them is super heroic because he's basically sacrificing himself - and we'll see why. The black hole is what it looks like when a building is warping in, and the Probes can warp in buildings, but they aren't fighters so it's curious to see one in a combat cinematic. Throughout the cinematic the big question is: What is the Probe trying to warp in? When it seems like all hope is lost and the Pylon (the building that warps in) finishes, we see the labor of their efforts. Pylons allow Protoss units to warp in from their base to the Pylon, so basically this small squad sacrificed themselves to allow a huge wave of reinforcements to stream their way back onto the stolen Protoss home-world.
This reclaiming of Aiur was a long time in the making as it was a huge emotional plot point in the very first StarCraft game before even the expansion was out. Now, 4 games later, we see this revisited.
So... Guess Chris Tamin was right... You didn't miss anything unless you write a whole Wikipedia entry... this kind of got away from me :|

As the "Academy" building was noted in the original (deranged screaming ensues), units like Firebats, and reapers were far too deranged or far gone to truly be resocialized, so they are shoved into what can be described as idiot proof armor that essentially lets them rampage to their heart's content in a controllable manner. 34:49 "What does this tiny black hole do?"
So you see that tiny round-ish robot that beamed it up there, he's like a non-combatant construction worker of their race. Their race have the power to transport things through time and space, units/personnel even buildings (that's how they 'construct' buildings). In order to do those time/space warping things, you need a Pylon (the diamond structure that comes out of it), then you can construct buildings or warp units around that vicinity.
Apart from the very freakin awesome cinematics and fight scenes, it actually shows the strategic nature of the game. As you saw that probe (the tiny round construction worker guy) was in the middle of the circle. He is being protected because that team needs him (like how medics are important). Their goal was to defend and hold until the pylon finishes so the backup can come, which happened.
The timing in this video hit the very, very sweet sweet spot of "JUST IN TIME!" which adds drama and urgency and hope to it but in-game you will see this as well wherein an army will see an opening and they have to engage it. If they miss it, the game will just be overturned against you in a second.
    SUCH. A. BEAUTIFUL. GAME.

Terran, Zerg, and Protoss are the 3 races. Terrans are the humans, Zerg are the monsters, Protoss are the advanced tech aliens. Queen of Blades used to be a Terran, but the Zerg turned her into their queen.
The black hole was the Protoss warping in a "power pylon" to that location, which allowed the Protoss army to warp to where the lone soldier was from their main base. The scene actually is an amazing cinematic representation of an in game tactic.

To clarify a little bit of lore:
Starcraft is real time strategy game with three playable factions:
    - The terrans (humans)
    - The Zerg (insectoids): they are lead by the queen of blades after their former master (the overmind) was killed. They are highly polymorphic and can adapt/evolve by assimilating DNA from multiple species
    - The Protoss (blue humanoids) : Large, strong, highly intelligent and very technologically advanced race with natural psionic affinities. Lost their home planet of Aiur to a Zerg invasion.
First video: the prisoner is Tychus, a terran pirate/rebel. He made a deal with the tyrannical terran emperor Arcturus Mengsk to be freed from prison on the condition to kill Jim Raynor (rebellion leader) and the queen of blades.
Second Video: Kerrigan was a terran Ghost (Elite Soldier) that fell to the zerg and was turned by the former Zerg leader (the overmind) into the queen of blades. After the overmind was killed, Kerrigan leads the Zerg Swarm to invade the terran domain. Her human form is shown in the end
Third Video: The Protoss are leading an invasion effort to reclaim their home planet of Aiur from the Zerg. They deploy troops and structures by warping them using the blue energy "black holes"

    Cliff notes :
This is Starcraft 2 so there's a whole story in the 1st one + expac.
Basically a space free for all between 3 races (Terran humans, Zerg insect+Alien mix high numbers expendables connected via hive mind, protoss noble energy based aliens, low numbers all have shield+ health, very high tech)
The 1st trailer: is the reveal that after 20yrs Blizzard is making the sequel after decades of fans asking for it. Hence the 'hell its about time' line at the end that resonated with us fans
The 2nd trailer is for Starcraft 2 expac 1: Like you guessed Kerrigan (the chick) is the ruler of the zerg, she's basically dreaming of revenge for turning her in a zerg.
Its the first time for us to see a lot of units in full cinematic 3d. That made it even more epic again for fans.
The 3rd trailer (my favorite) sees the exiled protoss trying to recover their planet (lost in SC1) from the zerg infestation. The little sphere robot starts the warp in of a pylon which once here will enable warp in of reinforcements
Basically these guys are battling and giving their lives for the sole purpose of defending that pylon, the symbol of them taking their birthright back.
The zealots have the blades and the high Templar float in the air with psionic attacks that look like electric storms.
Zealot no. 1 sees the banelings (kamikaze units that explode) heading for the pylon, he tears through one, allows his shield to blow up on the next and dies from last explosion.
The Templars seeing the huge ultralisk realise they have to go through the ultimate sacrifice : merge into one by combining in an immensely powerful archon that has a timed existence. The process is irreversible.
The last zealot stands proud in the face of the impending defeat. But they managed to last long enough for the pylon to warp in and as it does troops are beamed in its area of effect from the ships in orbit ready to tear through the zerg in front of them.
Hope that helps understand the mood :)
Question for you : do you have a mirror in front of you? Reflecting the monitor or do you have another monitor/ laptop mirroring the screen?

    • @PajakTheBlind
      @PajakTheBlind 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @Defs121
      @Defs121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@PajakTheBlind according to the lore, once merged they'll "slowly" burn out like a stars do. To prevent that, they have a psionic maelstrom around them (the shield they have). That would explain why they have barely any life but a huge shield in game. In the cinematics I think the archon took too much damage from the ultralisk, so there was no shield to prevent the energy from radiating which resulted the ultralsik, since it was right on them, to evaporate.

    Wings of Liberty:
Tychus Findlay is a hero character, but he's a marine, which is the basic frontline unit for the Terrans. (Makes creating that unit look epic)
    Heart of the Swarm:
Sarah Kerrigan was a human (red hair sniper), she was infested by the zerg (glowing orange eyes) then she was cured in the end of Wings of Liberty. Was this video a dream? Or a premonition?
    Legacy of the Void:
There are 3 races in starcraft. The Humans, The bugs (Zerg) & the advanced elegant Aliens (The Protoss). The Protoss (the 3rd race) lost their homeworld of Aiur to the Zerg years ago. This is the beginning of the invasion to retake their homeworld.

Nice video, continue that great job
yes i could hear the wilhelm scream
fun things to know blizzard wanted to make a Warhammer 40K (astartes :D) game but couldn't have the right, so they made starcraft instead, you can see the similarities
marines - space marines (with the bulky armor)
zerg - tyranides (bio oriented race that consume and parasite everything)
protoss - eldar ( tech oriented race that is here longer than the human)
Some précisions on the videos (and some spoilers for the lore and story):
1 video - the narrator is arcturus mensk the "emperor" of the human dominion that is a little portion of the galaxy and he is releasing Tychus as a marine and Tychus is close to the rebel Jim raynor the main human hero we follow. some marines are effectivly convict and have device on their armor to make sure they can control them, (like killing them instantly, or shutting down their armor) the little voice you hear asking tychus to advance on the platform is the AI that gives you the mission objectives often in starcraft 1 and sometime in the human campaing of the 2
the first cinematic isa prelude for the first of the three starcraft 2 games "wings of liberty" where you play mostly the human
2 video- sarah kerrigan was a human ghost (invisibility cloaking, sniper, nuclear target designation, some EMP and psychic power - elite unit and even then she was the best in term of psy power) that was abandoned by arcturus mensk on the first game so he could advance and use that oportunity to becomes emperor resulting in kerrigan being captured by the zergs (bug) infected to make them an agent of their hive mind (the overmind) when the overmind was destructed in starcraft 1 she then take it's place with her psychic power to control the swarm (or a party of it) and then continue to rage war against the other races (she is cured at the end of wing of liberty of the "endoctrinement" the overmind put on her when she was infected, easily recognizable as she lost her skeleton wings for a time) but still chose to continue to control a portion of the zergs as she is not fully human and the human , so you follow her on the second game as she try to make herself a place in the galaxy and discovers lot of secrets.
      UNITS SHOWN (may forgot some)
      HUMAN side
the little human fighter are viking if i recall, can transform themselves to be air-air (missile at the start) or ground-ground with the mignum.
the huge crashing ship that turn all in white as it crash is a human battlecruiser, one of the more pricy polivalent and powerfull human unit (air ground targetting) and it's a similar model that the heroes of wings of liberty are on during the campaign (not the same obviously but similar model)
tank little precision, when they move they can attack doing some damage (can only target ground unit) but when they morph and put the stabilisator on the ground they can do greater damage and fire a farther but can't fire too close to themselves and their blast have an area of effect)
marines (basic unit, can target ground and air)
      ZERG side
the biologic ship that lauch the zerg troups is and overlord, helping to manage the unit and transport it (very vulnerable)
the little critters are zerling ( sometime with wings that help them going faster)
the rolling one (that you can see on the 3rd movie) and with green color are Baneling using suicide explosion to spray acid everywhere (useful for attacking building or armored vehicule but vulnerable and can explode inside your troup)
the slithering one is the hydralisk, one of the most versatile unit, it can attack at distance, ground or air unit (there is only ground and air in this game they don't differenciate air/space)
the huge one that crush the tank is a mutalisk (melee resilent thing but pricy too)
3 video - the protoss is the second that came from that part of the galaxy with the zerg, you learn that the two race were created by an ancient and advanced race at the end of starcraft 1
that video takes place on Aiur the homeworld of the protoss, to know they are a psychic race and the zerg are a biologic race, so zerg regenerate over time, protoss regenerate shield (all unit have shields) but can't be healed by their own means (they can with human help) they are an advanced race that know how to use ther psy power and some void transfert, but they need coordonate, that what the probe do in creating the blackhole, it create a passage to lead the building in the designated place. that building is a pylon, one that produce a psy field (you can see it expending as the pylone came) that field is needed to power other building but also is used as a place to teleport unit
only covering PROTOSS units ( zerg are listed above as it's the same)
the guys with double blade are acolyte, basic melee unit for the protoss
the two with shoulder arch are templar, support psychic power unit like psystorm, illusion ...
the two fuse with one another (already there in starcraft 1) to produce an archon, a more resilient unit that can attack on the ground and on the air but loose all the different power

There’s a lot of hidden context that you can miss in these trailers without knowing some context of the series
The first trailer ends with the “Hell its about time” quote as a way of the fans and developers saying “it’s about time this game is out” since it took almost 12 years to release Starcraft 2 after the first one was released
The second trailer shows The Queen of blades in a human form because it’s right where the initial game ended and where the DLC “Heart of the Swarm” begins
And for the 3rd DLC it further expands the story but it’s a little tricky to explain
Regardless the Starcraft series has a lot of life behind it and I would recommend ONE MORE scene from this series and it comes from the
game, where it shows Kerrigan (The Queen of blades) being betrayed and left for dead, I would look up Starcraft 2 Kerrigan betrayal and it should be the first option that pops up

I love the "do not be afraid to study something and try to recreate it" line. It's very true. Don't be embarrassed if you made a drawing, a painting, an animation, etc but you got the idea from something or someone else. It's a very good way to learn. People always say just practice to be good, but don't forget to find inspiration. It's hard to practice something when you have no idea what you want to make. Every creator always takes inspiration from something. So start by watching others and take inspiration from them. However there are limits of course. Don't copy something and try to claim it as your own. Now that is a dick move.

This is an often repeated rumor that has never been substantiated by a single inside source, and denied repeatedly by both Blizzard and GW.
The similarity of the Zerg and Tyranids is frequently cited as proof, totally ignoring that the Zerg actually used that look first; and that in 1998 the Tyranids used guns, looked different, and weren't on a huge biology/evolution/adaptation kick at that time.
Instead, what almost certainly actually happened is that they both drew inspiration from similar older works - such as Starship Troopers and H.R. Giger.

8:25 At the end of Wings of Liberty, James Raynor (a.k.a the notorious Jim Raynor to Emperor Mengsk) has rescued Queen of Blades (a.k.a Sarah Kerrigan) after the Terran used the Psionic Wave-kind device to shut down and turn Kerrigan back to a normal human. Still, she is still link-up with the Zerg since she was a Ghost (duh, if you want to know why she is called Queen of Blades - read more about Gettysburg (Tarsonis) incident and the revival of Kerrigan), that's why the Heart of the Swarm trailer appears. The prisoner in the Wings of Liberty trailer, Tychus Finlay, has an order from Mengsk to infiltrate Raynor's rank and kill Kerrigan, but in the end, he is dead with a shot to his head by Raynor. Just a tiny bit more of game lore:
In the third video: The Protoss, are able to extract energy and create matter to channel more of that energy from a different dimension (the void). That little ball that spawns that blackhole-looking thing is a builder unit summoning (or creating) one the of the basic buildings (Pylon) that channels the energy that powers all of the technology available for that game race. After advancing some within a game, the player is able to transport units to any available Pylon anywhere in the map.
A good strategy for a player of this game, is to build lots of units, gain the ability to teleport, sending out a sole builder to an obscure part of the map near the enemy base, build a pylon, then transport your units for a surprise attack. Ultimately, this is the strategy shown in the trailer. The first few Protoss warriors, were sent to protect the drone worker and the pylon, to allow a larger number of warriors to teleport in, so that they can establish the beachhead to retake their planet.

I think what you may have missed not knowing the lore of Starcraft that is so epic in the legacy of the void cinematic is that the black hole that the probe called forth earlier took time to channel and could be interrupted but the protoss warriors bought enough time with their sacrifices for the crystal pylon to finish summoning allowing for a mass warrior teleport in the vicinity of that crystal pylon!

The black hole thingy warps in a pylon. The pylon generates a field on which units and different buildings can be warped in.
What you are seeing is actually a very common way for protoss players to play. Whenever you bring the action to the enemy, you place a pylon (or in the current meta, warp prisms are used) and then you warp in reinforcements.
That is my favourite thing with this cinematic. It is depicting gameplay strategy quite well. Even the fact that the Templars use up their storms/become wounded and have to merge to continue as an archon.
As a protoss player it never dawned on me that a pylon was being warped in. When I saw the pylon materialize I was super hyped.
    oh the memories

I knew about the Wilhelm scream for so long and its actually amazing that they cut a short quip-it of it in the heart of the swarm trailer, all the trailers are amazing though that blizzard makes, these ones show the heart of their work even though they are on "shakey" grounds, they love their amazing cinematics
