What I got from D3 was that it’s okay to go evil asking as your in the right crowd. Hades had it right. When the villains do bad it’s unforgivable, but Audrey does it and instead of being banished she’s forgiven.
Disney doesn’t do a good job at delving deeper into morally grey storylines and Turing bad characters good. I always felt bad for Audrey because Mal & Ben never gave her an official apology and she was done dirty. Her boyfriend publicly leaves her for a villain, and marries her too. Even when it’s proven that the villain is doing something evil. (Mal later changes) still doesn’t change what Audrey did as bad, you can argue that she only went off the deep end because Mal & Ben never treated her with kindness.

The robin hood line is how i see this entire song. I can see how this song can be problematic but i dont see alot of the decendants songs as lesson for the veiwers but the overall story as the actual lesson.
The true lesson for this franchise is you are not your parents, you are you and you only, you chose to be a good person or bad.
Its like listening to ways to be wicked and thinking thats a lesson on be evil, its just a song for the characters story to progress, their Actions ARE the lessons the audience needs to focus on

Some things can be grey but that doesn't mean everything is grey. Playing devils advocate and always trying to find/justify bad behaviour thinking there is some other reason. Some people are just evil or insanely selfish and its not wrong to have a black and whte viewpoint for some stuff.
    For example.
Stealing food? Can be grey if your starving/trying to feed your family
Stealing a luxary item? Always wrong, you don't need that.

stealing a luxury item actually isn’t that bad, its not an item needed to survive so your not stealing resources from anyone else, and luxury items are usually made by big corporations that can stand to lose that much money so overall no one is harmed long as you dont get caught :p

I also think that this song would make so much more sense if young Bridget sang it instead of Ella. The song itself justifies Bridget’s actions as an adult because by the song’s logic, it is okay to do bad things if you can see the “goodness” in your own actions. In Life is Sweeter, we already see that she kinda has a naive way of thinking. Bridget being shown to have this rhetoric before being “turned” evil by the prank could show the innate issue with this ideology which is that it’s SO EASY to use it to justify bad actions!

I agree with a lot of what you said, for me I saw this song as Chloe having to realize that not everyone is going to agree with/ follow her moral code. People are always going to have a justification for things they do and there’s nothing that Chloe can do to change that.
I think that the song standalone is too broad to really be effective. Within the context of the movie I saw this as her moral absolutism being shattered by her own mother, her role model up to this point. I agree that murder cannot be justified but are bystanders wrong for not doing anything to stop it? Or is it justified to ignore other people’s pain because we are “too far removed” from the issue? What does being too far from the issue even mean? Is a bystander just as guilty as a bully because of their inaction? I think that the song could’ve been more pinpointed to show that Chloe only sees red as a villain and that Red’s true wants and intentions are unknown to her, and she should question further before passing judgement so easily.
I feel like the song should’ve been used to show that Chloe is ignorant of the bigger picture and in knowing that, she should learn to critically think instead of just accepting everything she’s told at first glance. It’s a gotcha “everything is grey” moment which I think hurts it.

I actually reworked the song to be more about facing hard truth and growing from it. The truth may hurt and exposes our filth, but it also gives us something new to fight for
When it comes to right and wrong, it should be clear
    It's not that simple
You're right. With so many shades of gray it's hard to hear
    That doesn't make any sense
Facts are blured, lies are sweet, you'd agree
    I don't know what you're talking about
You think your truth will sufice, but I disagree
    I don't know you anymore
Why's it so hard to see clearly?
You can't play with the truth subjectively
    Gotta get your hands dirty
Just jump head first into the mess
    Gotta get your hands dirty
Push through the worst, give it your best
Sure at first, it kinda hurst, but I'll be there if you burst
    Gotta get your hands dirty
    To get it right
But just how far do you go?
    How much do you compromise?
Oh, tell me how do you know, where do you draw the line?
    It's not an easy change
The head and heart must align
You can risk your life, but if you risk your soul
    Did I lose my soul?

14:17 okay, fair, but in the beginning of the movie, Red was warned that changing the past too much would alter the reality and cause her to loose her mother in all of them, so her wanting to steal the book does make sense, seeing that talking to Merlin could mess up the timeline.

    • @TheArtisticAloubell
      @TheArtisticAloubell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

I mean, they already messed up the timeline by being there and interacting with their mothers and everyone else. That alone should change the flow of historical events. When it comes to time travel, you either meddle or you don't...and they had already meddled. The act of taking the book for themselves is just as influential as telling Merlin about the villain's plan. Telling Merlin would have been less life-threatening for them.

Given that Disney’s lessons are typically black & white, I actually found this song as a breath of fresh air given how our world RARELY gives us the privilege of just picking something as good or bad & sometimes you’re just left with picking whatever’s the lesser of 2 evils, & yes - if going to Merlin really hadn’t been an option & some words been altered in the lyrics, this song would hit stronger but overall, I think the lesson of nuance DESPERATELY needs to be shown more & maybe with time, they’ll find ways to show it better.
And as far as with the line “She could have kids she’s providing for.” sometimes you’re left with VERY few options to support yourself if you don’t have qualifications or a checkered past that people look down on you for or live in an area with very little employment opportunity - it may not be ‘right’ but morality itself often becomes a luxury you can’t afford to have in order to just survive. Does that make it okay? No. Do you always have the choice if it means you won’t be able to get by? Also no.

    • @TheArtisticAloubell
      @TheArtisticAloubell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Just because one is left with few options, that doesn't justify hurting or inconveniencing others. I know SO many people get put into these desperate situations and are pushed to do morally grey things, but...that still doesn't make it right. Does surviving have to mean that we give up the best parts of ourselves? It really is complicated, which is why I don't think the song really had the time to properly show the nuance of this situation. Idk if it was a time issue actually...maybe just reworking the lyrics a bit. I don't disagree with the overall message of the song, just the execution.

His actions, though sometimes questionable, were driven by a noble intention to help those in need. This concept is illustrated in the lyrics, suggesting that sometimes, negative actions can lead to positive outcomes, and that it may be necessary to engage in unconventional methods to achieve a just cause. Shadows of Gray rewrite of this song Title: Shadows of Gray
    (Verse 1)
In the morning light, I see the lines,
Right and wrong, they blur and intertwine,
Cruel and kind, they dance a delicate waltz,
Who’s to say where the truth takes its fault?
    (Pre-Chorus)
Every choice we make, a path to unfold,
In the heart of the storm, where the brave meet the bold,
Oh, there's a whisper in the night, calling out my name,
Telling me to search for the love, not the blame.
    (Chorus)
In the shadows of gray, where the colors collide,
We find the reasons, where the heart cannot hide,
With every twist of fate, and every tear that we cry,
There’s beauty in the struggle as the moments pass by.
    (Verse 2)
There are rules for a reason, to help us define,
The fragile threads that weave our lives intertwined,
But in the depths of doubt, when the world feels so cold,
There’s warmth in the chaos, a story to be told.
    (Pre-Chorus)
So take my hand, we’ll walk this winding road,
With a heart full of courage, we’ll lighten our load,
Oh, there's a spark in the dark, igniting the flame,
Teaching us to dance in a world that's untamed.
    (Chorus)
In the shadows of gray, where the colors collide,
We find the reasons, where the heart cannot hide,
With every twist of fate, and every tear that we cry,
There’s beauty in the struggle as the moments pass by.
    (Bridge)
And though the path may twist, and the skies may fall,
We rise from the ashes, we’ll conquer it all,
With hope as our anchor, and love as our guide,
In the vast array of life, we’ll stand side by side.
    (Chorus)
In the shadows of gray, where the colors collide,
We find the reasons, where the heart cannot hide,
With every twist of fate, and every tear that we cry,
There’s beauty in the struggle as the moments pass by.
    (Outro)
So let’s embrace the gray, let’s cherish the days,
In a world full of choices, we’ll find our own ways,
For right and wrong may bend, but love’s here to stay,
In the shadows of gray, we’ll learn to be brave.

      Verse 1
In a world where right meets wrong,
Cruel hands and kind hearts sing their song.
Who’s to say what’s just or fair,
In the dance of shadows, we tread with care.
There’s a code that whispers to me,
Every choice hides its own mystery.
A hint of grey in the black and white,
Searching for truth in the fading light.
      Chorus
So let’s get our hands dirty, dive into the mess,
Life’s a canvas splattered-give your worst, give your best.
Bad or good, should or shouldn’t, it’s not always clear,
There are universal truths that we must hold near.
      Verse 2
Like valiant knights with their noble quest,
Fighting for justice, their hearts in protest.
But who’s to judge what fights they’ve won,
When the lines are blurred, and the battle’s begun?
Creepy witches with their potions brewed,
In their own way, could be misunderstood.
They might have dreams, they might have a past,
Isn’t it funny how perceptions can clash?
      Chorus
So let’s get our hands dirty, dive into the mess,
Life’s a canvas splattered-give your worst, give your best.
Bad or good, should or shouldn’t, it’s not always clear,
There are universal truths that we must hold near.
      Bridge
If you’re good, they say good things will come,
But the shattered vase tells stories undone.
Life’s complicated, it’s messy and real,
Can’t always keep it clean; that’s the deal.
You’re a nice girl, but your princess is showing,
Behind every smile, there’s a tempest flowing.
      Chorus
So let’s get our hands dirty, dive into the mess,
Life’s a canvas splattered-give your worst, give your best.
Bad or good, should or shouldn’t, it’s not always clear,
There are universal truths that we must hold near.
      Outro
So here’s to the grey, where we learn to grow,
Embracing the contrast, letting our colors flow.
Right and wrong, cruel and kind,
In this chaotic beauty, a new world we find.

"Do anything for those you love" is a topic with it's own nuance all in of itself 😅 Our loved ones are also faced with that "right or wrong" dilemma and they sadly can't always be reliable when it comes to morality and values.
That song *could have* worked better if they stuck to their specific scenario ("when is theft okay?""what if this?""what if that?"), because then it would have been a reflection of the characters' values and it would have advanced the movie's conflict rather than teaching kids that it's *always* okay to do morally ambiguous things because they *feel* like it's the right thing to do.

I also thought the song was problematic, I didn't like it very much. But what I thought was an objectively worse message was with the red queen. The fact that the entire reason she is an evil, homicidal, TYRANT is because of a HIGHSCHOOL PRANK! A high school prank turned this sweet girl into a despicable, cruel woman who oppresses her people and murders them just for being out past curfew. It's like saying Stalin was a bloodthirsty and ruthless leader because he was bullied in middle school. I could go on a whole other rant about Red and her song at the beginning of the movie but that would make this longer then it already is. Thank you for reading my rant

The queen of hearts bugged me so much. I mean we have Ella saying how Bridget is so strong for being nice to her tormentors, which I agree with. It's hard but I do believe you should be kind to those are mean to you and it's an admirable trait. (Note: This doesn't mean you have to take their abuse. You can still stand up to yourself and others without being cruel) But then she just doesn't anymore. She totally forgot that was one of her skills and she just gave up a guess and turned into a evil tyrant and MURDERER to INNOCENT people because of others actions. And then the movie is solved by adjusting history so she didn't have to face hardship. By the movie's own logic Bridget is a weak person who is only kind because she didn't have to overcome challenges.
The movie would have been better if they went back and stopping the prank didn't fix the present, maybe the prank was a red herring or something I don't know. Anyway Red would have to use her knowledge of the past to remind Bridget of who she was and how she's strong enough to overcome her hatred and resentment. I mean it still wouldn't have solved the whole mass murder thing but hey it's better than just: Oh it's okay for you to be evil if people were mean to you. Newsflash: Someone's going to be mean to you! And it doesn't mean you can spawn a dictatorship regime and make life miserable for hundreds, thousands, or millions of people!

To my opinion, Descendants always had a running theme to prove you could be a rough around the edges and still be a good person. I guess they were trying to say that again with this song. That being said, I do understand your points. Sometimes it feels like being good just to be is a sign of weakness, and it's truly not a weakness. So in a way I guess it really depends on the situation, considering who's right or wrong. But that is my opinion.

Liking songs, especially when they’re problematic in hindsight, can be complicated and loaded. “The Bunny Song” from VeggieTales had a deliberate bad message that caused parents to overreact which, caused the songwriter(s) to edit it. As a result, it not only muddied the message but also now makes no sense. It was from an adaptation in Daniel about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendnego. For context, this came out in the mid 90s. An example of changed lyrics were from “I don’t love my mom or my dad” to “I don’t love my soup or my bread”. No, my parents were not among the outrage.
At the end of the day the execution of the message is arguably more important than the message itself; you can have the best message but come across confusing. Thanks to one of my college professors, I consider context more.

  • @MindfulMoonie
    @MindfulMoonie 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

On surface level, I thought it was a good message.. I do think it's important to do the right thing and sometimes it may involve defying authority or breaking a few rules as long as it follows moral/ethical guidelines and if it's for the right reasons... I think that's what Red and Chloe did and had in mind when saving Bridget.. However, it is easy to take lyrics too literally, and we don't want to justify things that are morally wrong or getting "revenge" I think compared to the other songs (except for the song with Uliana lol since it literally says "revenge") this song does have a negative connotation and like I said the concept can be taken too far which wouldn't be good.. Most of the songs from the franchise I like cause they are either about love, justice, pride, or happiness. With the VKs their songs did make sense at the time since their mindsets were different back then, but that did not stop my previous school from banning "Rotten to the core" from the school talent show lol. Anyway, I enjoyed this video and great analysis :)

Since you speak from the perspective of a christian girl, let me speak from the perspective of another christian girl. Sorry for bed english, it's not my first language. There are some wrong things with the song but not so many. There are even verses in the bible that speak of how showing marcy, love and being just is not the some thing with follow the rules. The idea that life is more grey then white and black is present there and is specify that making the right thing sometimes go against the rules. Yes, they could say it a bit clear in the song but it's not that bad. About the witch that sail potions, if you sail me a knife that doesn't mean that I have to hurt someone with it or that you are evil for giving me a wepont. I can use the knife to cook or to protect myself. She could have say that mabey the witch doesn't know the reason why people buy potinns, but it's not that bad. And about the "follow your heart" parth, I may be wrong here because of the meaning of these in your country but in my country follow your heart means show mercy, love and compasion. It doesn't mean follow your emotions. I live with the impresion that it means the some thing in english too.

after watching this movie, and psycho analysing this song, I'm actually full on believing that Ella did the prank, not Uliana and her gang. the lyrics towards the end "But just how far do you go? How much do you compromise? Oh, tell me, how do you know? Where do you draw the line? There's nothing I wouldn't do if my heart tells me it's right, If it's for someone I love, If it's to save a life." helps back up my theory, if Ella was willing to do anything for someone she loves (probably charming) and to save a life (Bridget??) and the book can only be opened by those with a pure heart (not the vk's duh!) then Ella might've been the one do to the prank if Chloe and Red didn't change the time line. This situation of problematic lyrics in song about morality reminds me a lot of 2 songs from Hazbin Hotel, Happy Day in Hell and You Didn't Know. In the first one Charlie is touching about how horrible hell is and that is full of the worst people who ever lived ,while the second one is about the hypocrisy of angels for killing demonds to handle overpopulation in hell and how things aren't black and white.
I wanted to point out both of them because I think Happy Day in Hell makes You Didn't Know worse by condradicting it. The first song was litteraly about all the horrible people who live in hell like murderers ,rapeists, cannibals etc. only for the second song where they refer to all sinners as inocent souls. Like you said while it's true that there are gray areas black/white situations still do exist.
And I know that the extermination angels Adam and Lute admited that they are only doing it for fun , that still doesn't changes how Charlie's problematic view on morality, especially since none of the sinners from that song showed any signs of regret or empathy towards others. And Angel Dust with Sir Pentious don't count since we don't know how they both died and just because they can be redeemed that doesn't mean every single sinner is going to do the same.

    • @TheSpawnfan
      @TheSpawnfan 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Yeah, take Alastor for example, he loves his mother, but was a cruel serial killer in life and hasn't changed one bit, still, the problem is the self fulfilling prophecy dilemma, so afraid is heaven of a hell uprising that they exterminate them for it and that might push the sinners to do just that. Charlie believes redeeming the sinners is best, but she's ignoring the fact that irredeemable sinners do exist, though she has a point in questioning why Adam and Lute are allowed to stay in heaven while they are evil.

Angel died from a drug overdose. His entire family is a Mafia family. Not to mention nobody knows what actually gets you into heaven as Adam is a complete asshole, misogynistic, and overall bad person but somehow still made it into heaven.

I can mostly agree with the points made in this video. I was a bit put off by the examples of what things are objectively wrong to do. They didn't really feel like good examples in the context of a children's movie (killing people or cheating in a relationship). I mean, those aren't really things children's movies should tackle anyway. But that is minor.
What I am more confused by is this perspective where Cinderella is not viewed as a character. Ella (as the younger version was called) is still suppose to be a teenaged character with her own strenghts and weaknesses. She is not an all-knowing mentor despite the fact that her daughter looks up to her. The whole comment about the vase or how she scoffed at Chloe being rewarded for being a good person? That was a teenager being a bit petty. Cinderella's whole story starts with how she has to slave away and is never rewarded. It is only natural for her to be a bit cynical as a teenager.

I never cared for the idea of there being "shades of grey" in the world to begin with. I was raised to believe there truly ARE two sides to human behavior, passive and chaotic (otherwise known as good and evil.) Sure, not all bad guys are exactly how we perceive them but not ALL bad guys have some form of "nuance" behind their actions. There are people who genuinely cause chaos for the sake of it and people who act evil also for the sake of it.

After seeing the lyrics, I get they struggle with the duality here.
It would also be cool to see the lengths Ella would go through instead of just seeing the queen as hearts as the only evil main character here.
Did Ella have to do something to maintain the kingdom. Kind of like the trolley problem debate.
Also, show that Chloe knows Ella’s words are problematic and she is debating over listening to her mom or sticking to her own moral code.
But that is really difficult to put in a short track, but it could be done by either shortening the chorus or make the verses longer.
It feels like a first draft.

I get that this is going to be unpopular, but I don't think Robin Hood needs more context than "stealing from the rich to give to the poor" to be seen as morally right becuase the innate power dynamic of people who are POOR (ie living in poverty) co-existing with people who are filthy rich is unequal, unfair and exploititive. Yeah stealing isn't the ideal way to fix this but no system that makes rich and poor people is going to be fair enough to fix itself even in the long term. So really Robin Hood should have started a revolution.
TLDR taking from the rich and giving to the poor is innately a good thing, so though Robin Hood would have done better to set up the wellfare state a few centuries early what he did was the next best thing so right regardless of context.
(becuase systems where rich and poor exist basically just means the rich legally steallign from the poor)

Reminds me of The Little Mermaid. When Triton destroyed Ariel's treasures, it was an act of anger already based on trying to protect her daughter. It was wrong, it was cruel, and could have definitely been handled better, but wasn't. At least we got a good story out of it. And at the end, Triton did another bad thing by giving himself up to save his daughter from a rigid contract(That one feels like the perfect grey decision. Both options given to Triton sucked)

I think that's treating the song a bit too literal with the ,,there are objectively good and bad things" I think it was a hyperbole/figure of speech when it said about everything being in the shades of grey and the song itself is making that clear by "contradicting" itself with the chorus. Also I subjectively think your objectively good/bad things aren't everyone's good/bad things, for every "objective" wrong or right thing, there could be an example of a circumstance in which it seems more complex or gets people to at least think and argue about it and that makes it morally grey (even if that shade is pretty dark). The witch as well, I dont think she ever implied that suddenly her actions are justified, just that it becomes more complicated and morally grey as per theme, going with the pattern of ,,["objective person"] but [circumstance makes it grey]", with the whole song as context I think its more clear. Over all I feel like you're taking bits and pieces of the lyrics, analysing them on their own without the context of the whole song or patterns in it thus misunderstanding the message.

    • @TheArtisticAloubell
      @TheArtisticAloubell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm not misunderstanding the lyrics at all. I watched the movie, I know what the conflict was, but I can't take away from the fact that the first time i heard the lyrics, they rubbed me the wrong way and here I am discussing why.
And I understand that situations can be complex, but even if life's circumstances are hard, there's never a good excuse to hurt anyone else or inconvenience people especially when they don't deserve it. I'm not saying we don't all dab in that to some degree, but that doesn't make it right. Explanation for one's actions is not the same as justification. For the witch, I understand that what she's doing is for her loved ones, but that doesn't make it right. All I wanted was for the song to acknowledge that what she was doing wasn't right, regardless of reasoning, and I would have been fine.
I don't disagree with the message of the song. I just think some of the lyrics are clumsy and could potentially be harmful. If reworked a bit, I think it would have been fine~

    • @sadina1348
      @sadina1348 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@TheArtisticAloubell exaclty, explanation doesnt mean justification. I dont think the song was justificating anything or saying it was right, it was following the theme of grey areas and the thing about grey is exactly that its not black and white which I think you're interpreting it that way, like if they say it had a good reason then they must be saying it was all a good thing over all, which they explicitly say that its just complicated and grey. I think maybe if they added a tiny ,,it doesnt make it right but you can see her point of view" then fine it could've been even more clear even tough in my opinion its already fine as is.

Bc it is very complex and complicated. Like not everything gotta be about kids/teen movies you know? Cuz sometimes they sneak in adult jokes in kids/teens movies and shows that the adults will notice that kids/teens won't. "as a Christian" what's objectively innocent? aren't we all born sinners? in that case there are no objectively innocent people and therefore your whole premise of "objectively good deeds" or whatever goes out the window, are you really a good person or are you just after the prize at the end? Before we hit that debate point, you can be rewarded for being a good deed without it taking away from the deed, but realistically, that's kind of the whole point of christianity, you're conditioned from an early age(generally, i know there are those who "find god" later in life) to believe being a good person gets you into the afterlife and being a bad person gets eternal punishment. Also that "Creepy Witch" she has a customer base, and guaranteed they're not always "evil" by the definition you've given either. Objectively this isn't a discussion you can have without your own subjective thoughts and feelings getting in the way because you're the only one who's having the conversation. I did enjoy hearing your take on this though and hope this doesn't come off as terribly disrespectful.

    • @TheArtisticAloubell
      @TheArtisticAloubell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

When I say "innocent" I don't mean in the context of sin. When I say "innocent" i mean is someone who didn't do anything wrong to receive the blunt of someone's malice. Like, if you're ever only nice to people, then you don't deserve to have stuff stolen from you or for someone to hurt you. You didn't do anything to earn the consequence of such terrible acts. I never said the words "objectively innocent." I said there is objectively good and bad, kind and cruel.
Besides, in Christianity, you don't have to be a "good person" in order to be saved. All you have to do is believe that you are a sinner, believe Jesus is the Son of God, and make Him your Lord and savior. There's no level of good any of us can do to be saved, so no, we don't do good works to get into heaven.
That being said, you should do good works simply because they are the right thing to do, or, in the case of actual Christians, are inspired by Jesus/want to please Him.
And regarding the witch line specifically is "Creepy witches selling potions for evil deeds." The line directly implies that she's selling potions that she knows have bad outcomes for others. Sure, she could be selling these to help her kids, but that is merely a reason for what she's doing, that does not justify her actions.
All I wanted from this song was an acknowledgement that just because we are pushed sometimes to do morally questionable stuff for good reasons, doesn't mean that that morally questionable act is okay. Sometimes it can be (i.e. with Robin Hood) and sometimes it's not.
Having said that, I appreciate your final sentence and that you enjoyed the video ^^ Thank you for watching!

I agree. Especially because by following your heart 24/7 it can sometimes lead to situations like what happened to Ben, Mal, & Audrey (but worse).
If there's an existing couple but one of them has a "heart that tells them" that they are meant to be with another person that they just met, that would negatively affect the existing relationship.
Ofc, if it's a hypothetical person, I don't think it's wrong to end a relationship since sometimes you just know based on circumstances that your current relationship will only end in disaster if you force it but if you don't break up with them AND you find someone else (which could lead to cheating even if the people involved aren't necessarily at that level of familiarity), it's not okay.

I think that giving the context of what Chole was questioning (should she help Red break in and steal) that song actually pretty good. I get that morality is complex and there are definite bad and definite good but since this movie is still targeted to kids, thankfully under normal circumstances most of them don’t know what k*lling or ass@ult are. Yes I know that in the movie Cinderella got beheaded but it wasn’t shown to us and Queen of Hearts was shown to be in the wrong.
With Robin Hood, I think it’s one of these stories that are just so wildly known the explanation doesn’t really need to be there, and Robin Hood is a good argument but it’s a song and they can’t break down corruption and all that and again kids, under normal circumstances, wouldn’t known what that is.
The line about following your heart is very Disney, is it necessarily right? No, not really, but it is very Disney and fairytale in general that if you stay true to yourself and always follow your heart things will turn out fine, and I think it is wishful thinking but then again, Disney/fairytale formula.
Overall I think that Get Your Hands Dirty is pretty good as an introduction to the concept of choices being morally gray and I wouldn’t necessarily call it problematic as a whole. I understand overthinking (I am an overthinker) but sometimes analyzing the song from an adult perspective just isn’t worth it. It’s pretty clear what the message tried to convey without overcomplecating it and not all songs need to have an ideal message to be enjoyed, people enjoy villain songs and they sell us all the bad ideas.

I don't think this song should get a pass the way that villain songs do. Villains are painted as obviously in the wrong, so we can feel free to enjoy their songs knowing they are wrong. But with a song like Get Your Hands Dirty, it is sung by a "good guy" and it is framed like that character is right in their thinking instead of the movie calling them out on some problematic thinking. That's more why I take issue with it.
But hey, to each their own!

I feel like the song could be a bit better worded but I read the courus more as a "don't let people tell you you have to do something because you're told it's 'morally correct' instead if you have to do something that's seen as not completely moral than do it" and as for being " dangerous for kids" this is something where I feel kids arw sold short. I loved more morally questionable charecters as a kid and so did other kids I knew because they weren't black and white. I feel it wasn't explained as poorly as you think. I've found adults seem to missunderstand the message more than kids too. I ask my 11 year old sister and she can say (paraphrased) "you need context to say if something or someone is good or bad" yet I've seen adults comeatly bounce around as if it made 0 sense. I love your art and the video but I also wanted to explain how I've seen the misunderstanding come more from adults or older teens than the kids because we look for more nuance than what the movie wanted us to.

Thank you for your respectful comment! And I understand what you mean. I don't disagree with the message of the song...I just think many of the lyrics are clumsy and can be interpreted the wrong way that can lead to harmful consequences. While, yes, kids are smarter than many adults give them credit for, there are still kids who do, can, and will take things literally...which is why they need the adults in their lives to steer them in the right direction. Many MANY people shape their ideologies and such off of the music they listen to, so wording does matter.
Ella definitely has some strong opinions, and she's in her right to think certain things, but...eh...such clumsy lyrics that needed some more editing and maybe the movie not framing her as 100% right. Plus I'm sure you don't need to spell it out for the audience I'm sure they can put two and two together. Chloe is choosing whether stealing the book in order to save her mom is good or bad so the song makes sense. Seeing as it's for the greater good, yes stealing is stealing but it's to save a life. Yes listening to your heart sometimes may lead to bad decisions but at the moment that's all you got. Plus getting your hands dirty from time to time is something we humans do everyday, good or bad who's to say because something that may be good to you may be bad to others.

This might be the best take I've seen so far. Everything in entertainment (books/movies/songs/etc) first goals are to be at least mildly entertaining & to make money, especially the ones from big studios. Everything else is an afterthought to those goals.
Parents do still need to parent their kids and teach them about right & wrong, entertainment like this are just the conversation starter on how sometimes situations can be grey and shouldn't be treated as the entire message. Kids can still get good morals from entertainment, but parents/teachers/etc need to help with the nuances of said moral that the entertainment didn't give.

🧼Exploring the concept of morally grey actions in a fairy tale setting, which normally only has objectively right and objectively wrong actions, is actually a really interesting idea. However, this was not the way to do it. Instead of saying that there is no way to know what is right and wrong or that every action has shades of grey to it and that you should just do what feels right, I think that the characters should have been put into a situation in which there was seemingly no right answer and be forced to make a choice. Or maybe our characters can learn that sometimes, there can be more than one right answer and that others aren’t always the villain just because they do things differently than the heroes.

    @amarvelousgeek222 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think the song and its lyrics alone are mostly fine. I think the problem was that the rest of the film should have provided the context and nuance, but didn't. A song can only have so many lyrics, and going into a full philosophical debate in a short, fun, poppy music number probably wouldn't work without a lot of time and talent to perfect.
For a Disney example, though it's not a nuanced message that needs further elaboration, but rather of a song with a deeply flawed message that the rest of the narrative contradicts: Honor to Us All from Mulan. If you read those lyrics, they're about how woman are "pearls" and "dolls" whose only purpose in the family is being pretty and polite enough to get matched to a good husband and bear children. Then Make a Man Outta You shows the opposite ideal, about how a man is only good if he can fight and be strong and mysterious. But by the end of the film, Mulan defies both these expectations and shows that the true value lies in being different, thinking outside the box, and not letting expectations hold you back, like when all the other soldiers dressed as women to better infiltrate the palace and trick the Huns.
So, in a better film, this song could have worked just fine as written, assuming the rest of the film defined what lines you cross are gray and which ones are black or white. But since it doesn't, yeah. Bad message.

Ok not trying to be rude this is just an analysis
The way I see it (and maybe this is a negative way of viewing things). There are only two types of choices, black and gray. someone someone can do something terrible for absolutely horrendous reasons but on the other hand every single thing we do even if it’s a good deed is from some form of self righteousness, or some other selfish tendency that humans biologically have. No matter how far we have progressed in our society, humans will always subconsciously do it for themselves even someone who sacrifices everything for everyone else is really doing it just so that they can feel good about themselves. That is a form of morally gray morality. When we do something good, we get satisfaction or dopamine and we continue to do good things in order to receive that that in itself is selfish. I’m not claiming that everyone in the world is a bad person but more that every action stems from a form of natural self preservation of our physical and mental health.
As for Ella statements on getting rewarded for good deeds, I do not entirely disagree with her while getting rewards is not an inherently bad thing and it is better than getting gifts out of nowhere. The sentiment is still true. When parents or people in general, keep giving rewards to kids for doing good deeds or getting good grades eventually those rewards stop and the now extremely confused Kid will look for other more negative ways to get attention. The way I was raised taught me that rewards and praise cheapens hard work and instead the recipient receives dopamine from the reward and not the satisfaction of doing something good.
While I agree that people shouldn’t steal from innocence most of the time when people are in a negative financial situation, they steal from big corporations Corporations that are nowhere near innocent plus I doubt anyone in that kind of situation is watching a Disney movie????
It is the parent’s job to tell a kid what is right and what is wrong and then the kid can figure it out for themselves while they grow up not a Disney movie!

Regarding the part where getting a reward cheapens hard work, I disagree. Sometimes the dopamine you get from the reward eventually transfers over to doing a good job without the reward. Case in point: when I was young, my parents paid me for good grades. So of course, naturally, I was motivated for the money. But eventually, the money stopped, but I still desired to have good grades and it brought me satisfaction knowing I did a good job.
      So that's definitely possible.

@@TheArtisticAloubell that is true!! there are different situations and different reactions I guess I should have said sometimes it cheapens the hard work my comment is mostly share my position on this video. Which is why I thank you for responding to my comment it means a lot to know you input is being read and not just ignored. Despite the fact that I have a different opinion on this video I still really enjoyed it, going by each lyric was the smart thing to do and it showed that you were truly thinking about it instead of making some outlandish claim for views. It’s truly inspiring to see someone who cares about what they do keep up the good work!
