    On my first month with zero experience I made almost 5k in an Asian salon doing only pedicures. My wife makes over 10k but she has been doing it for almost a year.

      That’s good $! Did you start as an employee or on your own?

      @@MrCarguy427 No employee, during the summer it's normal to make this much in a busy salon. I'm in the lower side because I just started every one in my salon makes alot more.

      That's honestly more than I make and I am a college grad. I've wanted to do nails forever. 26k a year I couldn't even live on though. I think many nail techs under report income.

    Great breakdown! I'd also add that charging for nail art can really make a big difference. Even if your basic gel mani is $30, making an extra $5-10 per service in nail art can bump your pay up!

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nail art can definitely be a great way to earn somer extra income! It does add extra time so someone would just need to make sure they're charging accordingly. 💗

    If you’re doing full sets of anything (gel/acrylic) and only charging 50$ that’s on the very low side of the spectrum. 30$ for a single color gel polish natural nail manicure is also very low. I recommend doing your research into what other salons are charging and be sure to add for art, glitter, length, encapsulation etc.

      Yes so true! In small towns/area though those could be average prices. I wasn’t necessarily saying those had to be the prices of services, but just using an example of what service could take an hour, and how much you could be making per hour.

    This is a good breakdown for folks. I want to offer, too, that I see a lot of nail techs deciding not to offer pedicures. I get it, not everyone likes feet or has a setup that is ergonomic for their body, but I think you're just leaving money on the table by not offering them. If you offer solutions to people that relieve them of pain or discomfort, A) that's really rewarding and B) people will pay a bunch of money for that. There is money in feet!

      I’m a nurse as well, I did it! I got my cosmetology license and love being in the shop. Things to consider as nurses we are trained to be more type A at work. In the shop you have to be able to flow with no shows and lots of unproductive time as you wait to build a clientele. Once you have regulars things feel much more structured. I still can see pros to clocking in, but for me the pros out weigh the cons. Good luck deciding

    I think it’s more common for the employee to get 60%… That’s my situation and that’s what I was offered at other salons as well. I would hate to only get 40%! But I’m definitely looking forward switching to booth-rent when I have a full clientele. I appreciate the video, thank you!!

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In both of my commission situations the employee made less than the salon ☺️ Which I understand because the salon has all of the expenses. I did not have to purchase or supply anything. If you’re getting 60% then that is very good!

    I am currently going to school so I can get my license and because I live in the Atlanta area in Georgia, I could charge a very good rate. I plan to go straight from school to going to trainings to work with my e file (Erica’s ATA), to training with the company I plan use to hard gel from and basically making sure I can provide an amazing experience from the get go. Not to mention, I have a few connections that give me a little bit of a leg up.

    What about expenses that can be written off which makes the taxes owed less?

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did calculate the taxes on the amount after expenses. Of course what’s owed will be slightly different for each person depending on many factors.
