love this song😍both key's and Taeyon's voices blend together fantastically😍😍Taeyon is a friend of shinee..he made two songs with Jonghyun lonely and breath...I hope you decide to react to these two songs too because they are masterpieces 💎
Thank you for the reaction. They are amazing. And you really need react to Taeyeon solo, she's amazing! She has so many styles. And by the way, she's already an adult woman, but she hasn't changed much, she's still the playful and cute girl 🤣 😍 She has many sides...
I love the honesty in this song. Yes it's petty, but it's only one part of the process of a break up. I like the contrast between their beautiful voices and the not so beautiful lyrics. I want a whole album of duets from them.
I think that's exactly what got me with this song and you put it together perfectly! Exactly the raw, recognisable emotion paired with the beautiful singing. Ahhh 😍 -Kay
So, here's my theory about what I think is happening in Key's "Hate That ... " MV. Some people have said they think Key was hitting a self-destruct button, which caused his spaceship to careen out of control -- referencing how his life is self-destructing after the breakup -- but I interpret it more as he is pressing the button to disengage his space capsule from the rocket boosters, etc. which is what is keeping him up there in space and on a perpetual orbit of the Earth. So, when he hits the button, we see the capsule detach from the rest of the ship and fall back down to Earth, where we then see him back on Earth with Taeyeon. (He is crash landing back to reality and is no longer allowing himself to orbit in the realm of living in the past and allowing himself to continue to obsess over the relationship.) Just to clarify, the words of the song are meant to be self-loathing. They say, "I hate that I hate that you're happy without me." So Key and Taeyeon are saying that they hate that they can't stop themselves from hating their ex just because that person is happy without them. In other words, they are saying, we had a perfect breakup and it should have been easy, but "I hate that I still can't get over you and that I still love you. ... I wish you were in as much pain as I am right now," etc. They are saying that they are wishing or "praying" that their ex would regret breaking up with them because they wish their ex was having just as hard of time getting over them as they are. Key says I love you once in the song because he is only allowing himself to admit that he still loves them, once. It's like he can no longer hold back the fact that no matter how much he knows the breakup was for the best, he reluctantly has to admit that he still loves them. Fun fact: The song was originally written by Charlie Puth. At the end of the MV we see what looks like Taeyeon being rescued from the rock that she has been trapped on in the middle of the ocean. (The rock representing a rough, unforgiving place that is extremely uncomfortable, etc. in the middle of the cold desolate ocean all alone with nowhere to go.) Which I see as her being pulled out of that dark place. And as the news report on the TV screen says, "Breaking News: Woman rescued after ..." We don't know what comes after the word "after" because it's up to us all to decide how we choose to live our lives after a breakup, each individual person fills in the blank with their own idea of what "after" looks like. As Es may have mentioned (sorry if I missed it), Key and Taeyeon are best friends. They have a sibling relationship -- often referred to as the Kim siblings -- so in Key's "Hate That ..." MV they aren't portraying that they were in a relationship together. That would be just too weird, LOL. As they mentioned during their VLive event before the premier of the MV, in the story they are talking about two separate relationships and going through their own experiences. Or portraying different sides of the same person. I see the story as way more metaphorical than just a simple breakup story, it's more like Taeyeon and Key are commiserating with each other because they understand what each other is going through. Taeyeon -- the leader and main vocalist of Girls' Generation, who is considered one of the top female solo artists and one of the best female singers -- is really close with all the members of SHINee. She has also collaborated with Jonghyun in his song "Lonely" and Taemin's song "If I Could Tell You," which is on his Advice album. We're just waiting for her collab with Onew in the future (wink, wink ... hoping Onew and Taeyeon are listening ;D) and with Minho in one of his solo releases as well. Hate That ..." was a pre-release single from his Bad Love mini album, which was Key's second Korean solo album released in 2021. On a side note: As I've mentioned before, with everything that SM Entertainment does, it's been designed to all connect. All of SM's groups' concepts and MV storylines connect together and it's all part of one giant Universe and story that started in 2012 with EXO's debut. Everything that SM does is another chapter in their story, like a graphic novel or mystery movie series. Therefore, I think that with all the imagery of space in the "Hate That ..." MV (on top of the fact that Key loves sci-fi and his whole Bad Love album has a retro space/sci-fi theme) that at least a few scenes, if not the whole MV, also connects in some way to SM's SM Culture Universe larger storyline. I see the space theme not only connected to SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV, but also to their "I Want You" MV from 2018 and Key's "Forever Yours" solo debut MV also from 2018, among several of SM's other groups' MVs. I have a feeling that "Hate That ..." might connect to another part of SM's storyline, either with parts of the story in a past MV, or even things might become clearer in the future as this story connects to upcoming MVs, etc. As I am always reminding people, when it comes to SM content, if something reminds you of something else or you see similarities between something in one MV to something in another MV, then it was most likely done on purpose. Because pretty much everything SM does is connected, and nothing the company does is random. For example, I see obvious similarities between Taeyeon's red dress and black boots and Key's red outfit and black boots in SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV -- the red is a very specific shade of red -- and the way she is standing on the rock in the middle of the ocean is very similar to the way that Key was standing on the submerged phone booth in "Don't Call Me," which I see as being connected to SM's Universe storyline. And now I think it even connects to SHINee's new "Hard" MV storyline, where we see Minho standing on the rock formation in a very similar posture while wearing a red jacket. And some have even pointed out that the canister you see break a hole through Key's space capsule and land next to Taeyeon in the water -- which is the same can we see on the table in front of Key when he is sitting in the diner, etc. -- could be a reference to the soda can we see Key holding in SHINee's "Atlantis" MV, etc. (However, I'm not yet sure whether Key brought the can from "Atlantis," or if the can magically appears in his hand in "Atlantis" because it is coming from its original location in "Hate That ...") So, because of this, I think people need to pay attention to all of the storylines with all of SM's groups, because I think at least all of SM's third and 4th gen groups are being designed to connect stories and plots. Each group has their own individual storyline and concept, but when you put them all together, there are threads of connections between the groups. And that includes SuperM, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT/WayV, aespa, and possibly even SHINee. Even though SHINee are second generation, they actually fit within the age group of third generation groups, so they sort of bridge that gap between 2nd and 3rd gen. And although most of SM's older groups' concepts and MVs may have never been originally designed to have any type of connection to anything to do with anything, that doesn't necessarily mean that over the years as EXO's story has evolved or SM's Universe concept was being created, that SM didn't find "happy coincidences" within those MVs that allowed them to use them as a way to connect things together. I mean we see what looks like the pink planet from Super Junior's "House Party" MV and a scene from Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s "When We Were Us" MV from 2020 in "aespa's ep.1 - SM Culture Universe" video. And SM has even brought Kangta, who is a member of the very first Kpop boy group H.O.T., which debuted in 1996, into the storyline with his solo MV remake of H.O.T.'s song "Free to Fly," which looks like they are on another planet in the MV and it featured Winter from aespa and Sungchan who is a former member of NCT, now SM's new boy group RIIZE, in the story. Changmin from TVXQ was also brought into the story in 2022 with his song "Devil," as the MV shows him on a pink planet and he talks about Kwangya in the song lyrics. And even more recently, BoA, who is a solo artist, became a villain within aespa's storyline. And U-Know from TVXQ's "Nexus, Reality Show" MV is centered around a futuristic world where he spends a lot of time within the virtual realm with Karina from aespa playing an AI character that helps U-Know. However, you should also know that no one really knows what is happening for sure in SM's Universe storyline. It's all fan theories and educated guesses. SM has never confirmed nor denied any of our theories and they have never explained anything. They have left it up to the fans to interpret the story and connect the pieces. And what makes this even more difficult is the story isn't being told in chronological order, so as fans you have to pay attention to everything and remember what you have seen and heard in previous content in order to decide where each piece fits within the larger storyline. Can't wait to see what you think of Taemin's new "Horizon" MV and Onew's "Beat Drum" MV.
Ooh, I like your interpretation of it! That it could be freedom and release rather than destruction. Very nice, indeed, an extra layer. I do agree also that the lyrics, even though they have all the pettiness and dark feelings, they're still not angry or controlling. It's pure sadness and frustration. And then that combined with the singing 👌 I enjoyed this one so much! -Kay

This was sooo good! I would love to hear those songs with Jonghyun, I'll have to nudge Es for those so thanks for the tip :) -Kay
I just had a day where I almost only listened to this song. And then you react to it! 😹😹😹
Love it.
He hee! Great minds think alike! 🤘 -Kay

I have mostly seen Taeyeon in SNSD hits, but I'm well aware that she has an extremely thriving solo career. Good for her, no one can deny the talent!
