Jennifer won an Academy Award for her role and Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Academy Award also. Eddie did win a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls.
We got princess Tiana too (Legend Anika Noni Rose ) this cast was picked very well!
I was about to say three of my favorite Virgos ,( I'm biased cuz imma Virgo)
And tiny Joe Dixon was the alligator in princess and the frog!!! Full circle ‼️‼️
AND YES, EDDIE MURPHY ACTUALLY RECORDED ALBUMS THAT CHARTED!
Like My Girl Wants to Party All the Time?! Hello!! A Hit!
@@V_4_Versace Thats the only one.
@@BRITSHNVASION Put your mouth on me, If I were a King and another song with Michael Jackson that escapes my mind.
@@carameldiva5131 what's up with you lol, I love that song
@@Remember_the_Time nothing. I was just listing his songs I could remember. I liked his music when I was young
Lorelle played by Anika Noni Rose is the voice of Tiana from Princess and the Frog! Also, the lady you said you knew from This Christmas is also on Why Did I Get Married. The guy who plays CeCe (the songwriter) is an amazing actor and recently started doing music as a solo artists more. He has a song on the Radio.
One of the best musicals of our generation.
Jennifer Hudson was previously known for her competing on American Idol before this Academy Award winning role. After her Oscar win, she launched her debut album
She sure did show them fools (the judges from the American Idol). ❤ I'm still proud of her.
I like to point out that when the Dreametts joined Jimmy as his background singers, they were all 16 yrs old. So Curtis & Jimmy pretty much preyed on their teen innocence & naivety.
a wait they were supposed to be 16 ?
@@justlive2809 Yes, at the very beginning of the movie all three ladies are 16 yr old teenagers. When Jimmy slept with Lorrell she was either 16 or 17 yrs old. When Curtis put Dina in the front & Effie in the back they were 18 yrs old. When Effie got kicked out they were 20 or 21 yrs old. This is why when Curtis made demands of the group they all complied without pushback, with exception to Effie of course. Curtis & Jimmy were likely in their 30s when they first met the Dreametts
@@justlive2809thats actually why Beyonce lost a lot of weight. She looked younger like that so she went through a craaaaazy diet to lose a bunch of weight.
@@JMac7395he slept with lorell when she was 18. That’s why she was like I’m 18 and a women when they first had sex.
@@BohemianAnthemalso cuz of Diana Ross
This is basically the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes
Answering a few questions:
Yes, this was Jennifer’s first movie and she was phenomenal in it. The only thing before this that she did before this, was American Idol. She was on the 3rd season and lost (Fantasia Burrino won).
Eddie recorded many songs through the 80s and 90s and still records music today. Check out “my girl likes to party all the time.”
Beyoncé was very much a phenomenon at this point-some would argue she was the biggest star in the movie outside of Eddie. The “queen bee” title had just began to circulate. By the time this was released, irreplaceable was dominating the air waves.
It’s kind of a misconception that Jennifer lost soo much weight after this. She actually had to gain weight for this role because it’s a large part of Effie’s storyline (it’s why Curtis wanted Deena to sing lead not because she’s light skin). Once she joined weight watchers, she did lose a lot of weight but only a little less than her original weight before staring in this movie.
RIP Ken Page. He played the club owner when Effie got back on her feet towards the end. He was the voice of the Oogie Boogie man in Nightmare Before Christmas and also played Old Deuteronomy in the stage movie of Cats from '98. This film has such a STACKED cast! Even the winner at the beginning of the movie, "Tiny," played Louis the alligator in Disney's Princess and the Frog alongside Anika Noni Rose who played Tiana.
My heart broke when he passed! I'd just seen him at D23 like the week before!
Noooooo I didn't know he passed. I knew him from Ain't Misbehavin' originally 😢
Lorretta Devine was the in the original Broadway play.
Oh, by the way, I didn't just put Dina in front because she was light-skinned but because he thought Effie was too fat to be the lead singer (and her voice is too strong). This is based on The Supremes and Diana Ross (played by Beyonce). This was on Broadway long before the movie version was made with Loretta Divine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and the iconic Jennifer Holliday. The reason Jennifer Hudson got such acclaim is because she was the only one who could hold her own singing this song when nobody could hold a candle to Ms. Holliday for decades. Amber Riley did an amazing version of this song as well, but they have been the only two who had. Eddie Murphy's character (Sam Cooke).
Eddie's character was more of an amalgamation of Marvin Gaye,Jackie Wilson and James Brown.
James Brown was a huge influence
Amber also won the Olivier award for playing the role on west end
@@ANicole079 Amber is an underrated BEAST!!!!
That is actually what happened but in a different way.
Diana was pushed to the front because her voice was more acceptable to the non colored folks.
The first lead singers voice was too "black and soulful
Beyoncé had put out her 1st solo album but not the 2nd one yet. This was right before ‘B’day’. They had her downplay her voice for this role because that’s what the character called for and after she wanted to make an upbeat strong album thus BDay was born! Thank you Dreamgirls lol
Love the reaction! A few things, this is loosely based of The Supremes, Effie was loosely based off Florence Ballard. Eddie’s always been a singer, he actually has a top ten hit to name off $100,000 bet with Richard Pryor…At this point in her career, Beyoncé was promoting B’Day, this was kind of the era where people started to acknowledge her as “Queen B”, this film was actually supposed to be the break that solidified her on film (she actually lost, like, 20 lbs for this movie), but Jennifer Hudson just blew it out the water, no one really knew Jennifer Hudson outside of American Idol at this point. Jennifer won everything she was basically nominated for off this role, including Golden Globe and and Oscar, she actually opened of the BET Awards that year with the original Effie White (Jennifer Holiday). Anika Noni Rose (Loreal) was (and still is) a theater/broadway star, she’s also the voice of Tiana in “Princess and the Frog”….and Jaleel White (Urkel), is still alive and doing well, he actually stays booked, just on more minor shows….also, Loretta Devine made a cameo because she was the original Loreal ❤️
I think it was because Beyoncé s character was light skinned and skinnier. Plus she had the voicve that didnt intimidated white audiences. And he also liked her.
I can tell you Beyoncé was solo at this point she recorded the album B’day in 2 weeks after the movie wrapped it did amazing her second #1 album & she was doing the pink panther movie with Steve Martin & that did pretty good as well
Yep! She was at the top and hasn’t come down since
A woman like me is my jam ‼️
The Austin Power movie, the Gold Member. I think it was before the DreamGirls. She was the busy Bee!
Fun fact: The “And I Am Telling You” scene was the last thing the cast shot before production wrapped.
JENNIFER WON A GOLDEN GLOBE AND AN OSCAR FOR HER PERFORMANCE IN THIS MOVIE. SHE ALSO WENT ON TO WIN AN EMMY AND A TONY AWARD, MAKING HER AN OFFICIAL EGOT!
Actually, E=Emmy , G=Grammy , O=Oscar & T=Tony! Golden Globe does not count as a EGOT!!!!
Only 2 years prior to the making of this movie, Jennifer Hudson was the talk over her shocking elimination in 8th place on the 3rd season of "American Idol." It caused outrage because it was "Barry Manilow" week and the bottom 3 of the week were all the black female singers, including eventual season 3 winner, Fantasia Barrino (Fantasia & Beyonce both auditioned for the role of Effie that Jennifer eventually won).
The was based off the 1981 smash Broadway musical. Sheryl Lee Ralph (currently "Barbara" on "Abbott Elementary") was "Deena" ... Loretta Devine originated "Lorell" ... and the sensational Jennifer Holliday, who was only 21 years old when it opened, originated the role of "Effie." You need to watch the live performance of "And I Am Telling You" from that night, when Jennifer won the Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, she won a Grammy Award the following year and it's the only song in history to win a Tony, a Grammy and an Oscar, as this won Jennifer Hudson the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Five heartbeats is another great movie that's a drama/musical too. A classic
Cadillac Records is better
Also, RESPECT
And, ELVIS
I would love it if you reacted to the Five Heartbeats. It was the template for so many biopic films!
The Backstreet Boys are still together. They released their 10th studio album which wa a Christmas album which was released on October 14th 2022.
You’re gonna lose it when you hear about Eddie Murphy’s failed launch at a music career in the 80s. Look up “party all the time”. The funny part is that you probably already know the song, but now that you know it’s Eddie Murphy….it’ll hit different 😂
This is one of my favorite musicals of all time. Makes me cry every viewing. Absolutely incredible. ❤❤ The TALENT in this movie.
This is probably closest to Chicago in terms of "style" of movie, but they're both standouts in different ways.
Eddie Murphy has been singing professionally since Beverly Hills Cop 2. He had a single out called "My Girl Wants to Party All the Time" back in the 80's
48:57 she was the voice of Tiana in Princess and the Frog, Anika Noni Rose.
keith robinson, the guy who plays as effie's brother was the green power ranger in light speed rescue
Yessss glad you watched not many people reacted to it🔥
Eddie Murphy’s character is the one who’s married
Jennifer sang the ish in this movie
This is supposed to be loosely based off The Supremes with Diana Ross
The finale is just something you sit through and take in. It goves me the chills and tears me up. Such a great movie
I got to see the original cast on Broadway. I remember it like it was yesterday. Amazing! ❤
Party All the Time by Eddie Murphy 😉
Ooh I would have LOVED to see that ✌🏾❤️
Thank you for your reaction to one of my favorite movies. Yes, I was around for the Broadway production and the movie version. I agree with many of the comments, so I will add a few more fun facts:
1) When Effie comes back from the doctor to the club, the fat shaming from Curtis hurts because she has just found out she is pregnant. Before she can tell him, everyone turns on her and Curtis dumps her.
2) The time period for the movie is from 1962-1975.
3) The scene for "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)" wasn't shot until the very last day, because the director wanted Jennifer Hudson completely immersed in the character of Effie. That is the scene that won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. When Dreamgirls premiered before moviegoers in 2006, this scene received standing ovations in theaters.
4) The real-life events of the Detroit riots were included in Dreamgirls, although for artistic license, the movie set them in 1966 instead of 1967.
5) The album covers you saw in the press conference were early albums of the Supremes, but the names and photos were changed to reflect the Dreams.
Keep up the content!
Urkel is alive and well. Lol. - I'm realizing you're watching an extended version I have never seen. Wow! Either that or I have to re-watch Dreamgirls.
I was confused too
He just celebrated his 48th birthday.
dream girls was originally a broadway play starring Jennifer holiday based on the show business aspirations and success of groups like the James Brown, Jackie Willson but mainly focuses on the supremes
My favorite song, Jennifer Hudson, did it by herself - "I Love You I Do" when Jamie Foxx touched her throat at the end. Lol. I loved this musical and Bill Condon writer and director also did "Chicago" and "The Greatest Showman" Movie musicals as well.
That's my favorite song too❤
This honestly makes my day, this is THE movie I’ve been wanting to see you react to yessss
Amber Riley and Naya Rivera from glee also audition for American idol and both got denied. 2 of the best singers on glee
Jennifer Hudson is insanely good in this! 🔥 I still feel that Eddie Murphy should've gotten an Oscar for his role as Jimmy Early and yes he released music, surprised you haven't heard of "Party All the Time". Anika Noni Rose (Princess Tiana) is so underrated in this, but she's amazing.
Loretta Devine played Larelle in the original broadway show.
I just love this movie. It has a spirit and style that I no longer see anymore. And yes such a wonderful cast.
The way I got SOOOOOO excited when this popped up!!!
I love how they gave an original Dream Girl in the movie Loretta Divine!!!!!!
Shout out to the Philippine National Anthem, “Listen”.
Eddie Murphy put out a song in the 80's called Party all the time. and that was it. The song was created based off a bet. It was written by Rick James.
Idk if anybody said it in the comments but Loretta Devine played Lorrell in the original Dream Girls play. I’m sure that’s why they gave her a cameo role in the movie.
It's All Over (the argument) right into And I Am Telling You is just insane pacing, the energy just exploding through
This is one of my top 10 movies of all time. My favorite song from Jennifer is One Night Only. I don't count the song "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going " because that's a given. I also love to hear Beyonce singing, "Listen." I could sit and listen to this soundtrack all day.
28:28 check out the original by Jennifer Holliday!
Cece ain’t shit he sold his sister down the river until it no longer benefited him and Deena only turned after Curtis didn’t let her play in that movie she wanted to be in
Dreamgirls was originally on Broadway in 1982 with Sherly Lee Ralph from "Abbot Elementary as Deena, Lorretta Divine the lady you called "Mama" because she is in everything and a singer name Jennifer Holiday as Effie. They tried for years to get a movie, and this one came on in the early 2000. You can find a tour of the musical somewhere or some College or High School doing the show. The last really it came close to being back on Broadway was the West End London cast with Amber Riely from "Glee" playing Effie.
Lorrell absolutely looked 18 for that time period. Everybody looked older back then.
In an interview with Oprah, Beyoncé said that she lost 20lbs in 2 weeks for this movie
Eddie did have a couple of albums in the 80s. I think Party All the Time was his biggest hit.
This movie is an adaptation of the broadway show from the 80’s. It got Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer holiday , and Loretta Devine famous. They are the original framers dream girls
Came to say this!
"All US black people can sing in a sort of way." 🎯💯
Well now you just GOT to watch Sparkle with Jordin Sparks
it was so funny watching you react to this, knowing that Eddie Murphy actually released albums in the 80s and 90s that did pretty well! 😂
Tank used to sing backup for Jamie Foxx and wrote a lot of Jamie's earlier songs
15:26 he did music...
He had a song with Michael Jackson❤😂
This movie was based a book called Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme written by a very bitter (and probably completely justified to be so) Mary Wilson. The broadway show that came first followed more closely to the book, making the Deena character (AKA Diana Ross) much more of a willing participant in the ousting of the Effie character (AKA Florence Ballard) and taking her place as lead. Possible they soft-pedaled that part because they didn't want Beyonce to play a villain. The movie added the "Listen" power ballad for Beyonce to illustrate that Deena didn't know, but she was definitely portrayed as the villain in the book and the play.
Career wise for Beyonce. Couple weeks after filming and finishing up this movie. We were blessed with Beyonce's second studio album B'Day. This project for sure gave her inspiration and she completed that album in 2 weeks and released on her birthday.
Dreamgirls was a Broadway musical first -- opened in 1981 with Sheryl Lee Ralph (from Abbott Elementary) as Deena, Loretta Devine (the mama from This Christmas) as Lorrell, and Jennifer Holliday as Effie. As some others have pointed out, the story is loosely based on the story of the Supremes (Diana Ross ascended to the lead of the group, slept with the manager, had her name put out front of the group name, etc). Diana Ross REFUSED to see the musical and even gave Sheryl Lee Ralph the cold shoulder when Sheryl approached her in a restaurant. Mary Wilson of the Supremes went to see the musical, said she cried through it, and when she wrote a book about her life in 1986, she titled it Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme. While Effie gets a happy ending in Dreamgirl, the Supreme on whom she is based (Florence Ballard) never found solo success. She died in 1976 at only 32, only a year after reports that she had fallen so far from stardom that she was receiving welfare for her and her three daughters. However, Jennifer Hudson dedicated her Golden Globe win for the role of Effie to Florence Ballard, so in a way, Flo got her shine in the end!
Jaleel White just got married. The dude who played Urkel.
I think he also just put out an autobiography.
The book and the play are a bit darker. Eddie Murphy had a top 10 hit in the 80's. The story is loosely based on The
Supremes. Mary Wilson, one of The Supremes, wrote a book that confirms some of the plot points.
Loretta Divine was an Original Dream Girl!!!✨️💜✨️
This is one of my favorite movie musicals. Good reaction! I grew up wstching this movie. Probably seen it 15-20 times. Will never not be amazing. It is a broadway adaptation and has me thinking about beyonce in this and ariana in wicked (coming out soon) i wasnt old enough to know how people or the media reacted to this movie, but id be shocked (and offended) at anything less than half of the excitement around wicked. Truly a stunning movie with a very talented cast and my favorite beyonce or Eddie movie. And Anika (third dreamgirl) becoming a Disney princess is just absolutely crazy to think about. And Jennifer being Jen is just....without words, perfection.
The "musical argument" as you called it was the bop .
Me and my sis would sing this from memory the way we sung
Contagious by the Isley Brothers...
Also this was inspired by Diana Ross and The Supremes
Anika Noni Rose (the 3rd dreamgirl , Eddies sidepiece ) she is Princess Tiana in Princess and the Frog. 1st black princess ! Put some respect on her name! 😂
Dream girls nah you need to watch (Sparkle)❤
Not only does Eddie Murphy have albums he has a song with Michael Jackson!
I saw this movie three times in theaters. I had been hearing the music my whole life and never saw the broadway show. I was over the moon!
firstly beyonce was considered queen bey in 2006. this was in the early days of myspace as well as social networks like tagged and yahoo messenger conferences lol. stan culture was rising. but in 2006 destinys child had finished their last tour in 2005 and beyonce released bday with hits like deja vu, ring the alarm and upgrade u. the pink panther film with steve martin was released at the beginning of the year in february. basically she was going into her solo career and becoming the beyonce we know today
Idk u might be too young to remember JHud was on American Idol before Dreammgirls and in her audition for Idol she said before that she was working on a disney cruise ship singing in one of the shows as jasmine from aladdin i believe. She was on Idol the same year Fantasia won but was wrongly voted off and no one had no idea what happened to her until this movie and I was so excited she made it in this movie
Eddie Murphy was definitely an artist back in the day like 80s I believe. 😂
Rick James produced a song for Eddie Murphy in the 90’s called Party all the time . Eddie also has a songs ft Michael Jackson called what’s up with you
Oh for what I would give to watch Dreamgirls again for the first time.
Cadillac Records is Beyoncé’s best movie. No question
She released her album “B’day” at the same time this movie came out in 2006
Bey was actually at one of her thickest before and after this film. She lost a lot of weight for it and studied Diana’s mannerisms a lot to book the role. At this point of her career, she released her B’Day album. so songs like Irreplaceable, Upgrade U and Deja Vu were out and killing the game. The album itself was inspired by this movie. She recorded it in two weeks
There are a couple of differences for this movie and the Broadway show like the songs "I love you, I do", Patients" and "Listen" were all written for this movie, but people like "Listen" so much it's now in the Broadway show. Oh, Jennifer Hud is a good singer, but if you want to hear the best you must look you Jennifer Holiday singing Live.
Actually Jennifer’s Performance In
The Film Of “And I Am Telling You” Was Done At The End Of The Production Schedule For The Film And She Did Multiple Takes “All Live”. It’s Included In The Dreamgirls “Showstopping” 2 Disc DVD.
dreamgirls is so iconic im glad you reacted! BUT WHERE IS THE VAMPIRE DIARESSSS
One of my favorite movies! I wish I could see this for the first time again
You have to watch The Fighting Temptations!!
Dreamgirls The Movie Is Based Off The Tony Award Winning 1981 Broadway Musical. Jennifer Holiday’s Legendary Performance As “Effie” Won Her The Tony For Best Actress In A Musical.
I’m freaking with it 🔥
My favorite song is steppin to the bad side. I be singing my ass off to that song! I love the whole album honestly. Great musical!
FINALLLYYY!
Loretta Davis was the original lorell in the dreamgirls musical (play)
this is probably the movie that ive watched the most times… along with burlesque. Like why do I get the urge to just watch this movie randomly??? I be singing “HEAVY HEAVY” while picking up my cats and ish lol
You're right they've been together her whole life she was a child WAKE UP PPL
Jennifer Hudson Won Every Major Acting For Her PowerHouse Showstopping Performance Of Effie White In 2007
This movie is styled like other black musical films: The Five Heartbeats, Sparkle, The Temptations, The Jackson: An American Dream
YOU CAN'T DO MUSICALS, AND NOT DO A REACTION TO "THE FIVE HEARTBEATS" THAT'S A CULT CLASSIC!
I think he said he watched it
i LOVE this movie! Dreamgirls is one of my fav musical movies next to Hairspray! 💓
25:30 Backstreet Boys never broke up. In fact, they're still touring.
Baby the energy and aura Beyonce have in these performance as much as she tried to hold back she just has it in her lol
35:35 They had that MJ look alike and Deena is supposed to mirror Diana Ross. That's why they show that little man being very attached to Deena in another scene.
They mirror their whole dynamic.
Dreamgirls was on Broadway first back in the 80s. It's kinda of based on Diana Ross and the Supreams. Jennifer Holiday originated the roll of Effie on Broadway won a Tony award. Go find it her singing Your Gonna Love Me on TH-cam. Talk about powerful...
I’m glad you finally watched this, I enjoyed this reaction ✨💕
You have NOOO IDEA HOW LONG IVE WAITED FOR THIS ONE I LITERALLY SCREAMED!😭😫🤭
