    Lyrics below:
    The stars that shine
    And the stars that shrink
In the face of stagnation the water runs
    Before your eyes
    Swallowing diamonds
    A cutting throat
    Your teeth when your grin
    Reflecting beams on tombstones
    A jamboree of surprises
    Playing Russian roulette
    Or the lucky dip
A clenched fist to your heart
    Coal dust on your lungs
A silver tongue for the chosen one
    Heavy magnum in your side
    Or a bloody thorn
    Skating bullets on angel dust
In the dead sea of fluid mercury
    Baby piano crys
Under your heavy index and thumb
    Pull some strings-let them sing
    The stars that shine
    And the stars that shrink
In the face of stagnation the water runs
    Before your eyes
    Dazzle it's a glittering prize
    Dazzle it's a glittering prize
    Before your eyes
    It's a glittering prize
    The stars that shine
    And the stars that shrink
In the face of stagnation the water runs
    Before your eyes

Or it's just highly pretentious bollocks influenced by Colombian sugar and other chemical aids. Not that it isn't good writing, it sounds good, but it very likely means nothing more than another well earned paycheck for a quality band.

@@djinnxx7050 ordinarily I'd agree with you but I have to give it a 'pass' in the context of the totality of SATB. It's the imagery of mortality/"gloom" that goes beyond something as merely 'surreal' as Salvador Dali. They are as dislocating/alienating as the world to come. 2024

In my opinion, pop new wave was good until 1984. But surely everything changed in 1985, when Gorbachev came to power and world tension began to loosen. That is why Western musicians (new and some of the old ones) breathed a sigh of relief and stopped rebelling, and focused on simple, more often cheerful and funny topics.

The 80s, like every decade, were varied, it had tons of great alternative music, tons of innovation in more experimental and extreme music even, but on the other hand there were lots of shitty pop stuff that aged like crap. Either way, it is probably my favourite decade for music, those who hate on it probably only listened to the most mainstream shit from that time.

I remember reading in a magazine that she said this song is about greed and disease.
    I love when she says
    index and thumb
    Pull some strings-let them sing
Because it's obvious about a musical instrument but knowing what the song is about I always pictures it as a metaphor for a surgeon closing up a wound with a suture needle and making someone scream.

I'd say the former; since the beginning of the 2000's, the best I've heard is basically "Okay, well that wasn't so horrifying" or "Okay, I think I can get behind this", but hardly anything makes me say "Whoa! Who's THIS?" . When I DO hear something that makes me react "Whoa! Who's THIS?", it turns out to be something from before the 2000's .... or a band whose first album was in the 90's and can still make something actually decent in the 2000's.

You know? That magic is only unique to your era and when i was about 15 in 2000. I discovered those same bands and the feeling was magical and dreamy. So it carries on. Not a lot of kids were into what I was into. So, I felt nostalgic for an era I never really truly lived. I started dressing accordingly and learned a lot about music and fashion and just so much! I guess you can say it still exists in young people over the years. It will never die. I also became a huge Depeche Mode fan and of course fell in love with them. I still wear my jacket that I spray painted Siouxsie's eyes on the back. ;-)

I remember reading some article online where Siouxsie said, that this song was inspired by the Dustin Hoffman film "Marathon Man." The "Swallowing Diamonds" lyrics refers to how Hoffman's character makes (well forces really), the Nazi Criminal played by Laurence Oliver swallow some diamond's, he had smuggled. It's a great film btw.

Biggest difference was the number of bands available and how they were perceived . This band was considered extremely underground in 84 - I was considered a freak for loving this type of music . Another very prevalent thing was the Mystique , latter related to not having this overload of information where you have 1 million bands to choose from one click away - you would focus much more on things and plus , you had little idea how these things were done since you didn´t have the internet expaining you how you play the Bass in - a - week or how to master the latest version of Fruity Loops in 1 hour .
Magical , that is how this sounded like ... life changing , we would copy what we saw , what we heard , yet , we knew each and every song on that album . Focus as opposed to the dispersion you have today .
Having said this , even though very different epochs , I find this as fascinating and vibrant , just yesterday I was listening to Burial´s new- ish " Antidawn " EP and I was mesmerized by its passion/sound .
A little nuance here , another one there ... at the core , nothing ever changes .
Apologise if a " yes " or " no " type of question turned into a pretty boring and extensive rant 😂

I hate having to keep explaining this to kids, who weren't even a gleam in their daddy's eye when Ms.Ballion was strutting her stuff in the late 70s/early 80s - The Banshees disavowed the 'goth' label and had moved on from the darkness/doom/gloom/black schtick after they did 'Ju-Ju'.

  • @spinglasshydra

There's nothing like hearing Classical Instrument's played along with those magical Post-Punk guitars, along with Sioux's visually emotive lyrics. There's nothing like listening to those heavy 4/4 cello's, vibrate with such luscious base-tones. Personally, I never needed the video, because in "my" World of tempered Faust, her vocal narrative's create spectacular forms of action:
    "Skating Bullets on Angel Dust,
In a Dead Sea of Fluid Mercury,
    Baby Piano Cry,
Open your Heavy Index and Thumb,
    Pull some Strings,
    Let them Sing"
Do musicians write lyrics this anymore? There's an unexpected Gothic Romance to this particular music or some unquantifiable mystique which dwells in between words with rhythm. My personality has always found a level of boredom and hopelessness for anything, that I can quickly problem solve. I've kept up with the Goth/Industrial scene, beginning in 1982 until today -- Theirs one musician currently, who might write somewhat similarly at times is Victoria Legrand of Beach House.
I'm someone who doesn't live in the past. I stay engaged with todays "Real Underground Subculture" and I refuse self-stagnation, that's the secret of life. I'm reminded of Anne Rice books, when her Vampires always had one obsession which keep them grounded to cope with eternity. If I was one of her character's, then collecting music is mine and staying relevant. Currently, teenage kids are just "using" Goth music and fashion, because its become popular, against the dogma of all that's polar opposite to what being Goth represented.
I'm a practicing Psychiatrist and I teach Psychology at a large University. University students are different and I have a "Classic Goth" thing going on -- Black on black clothes; Four button British tailored suite jackets; Punk pants with zippers and straps; 40-hole polished combatboots; I still wear gobs of silver jewelry; but, no I don't wear makeup or have red hair anymore. You should look at their faces; when, I drive up to the lecture-hall in a classic 59' Jaguar MK IX with this music or Wumpscut's, "Soylent Green" playing. Some ask questions, but most know that Goth is a lifestyle to me, it's not some phase.
If it's a phase, then you're not Goth to begin with; plus, I'm sort-of famous now by giving a cash prize to the first student who can identify some weird obscure Goth/Industrial song -- before final exams.
I still have a lot of fun with it... !!! -- Why Not?

I hear you! I still love Pat Metheny after 42 years when I was first introduced to his music, and "The First Circle" is still my favorite song of his. I went to one of two concerts he did here in Atlanta during that tour and tried to figure out the rhythm of that song. He was totally astonished, because I came closer than anyone else had at the time. I guessed 18,8. It's actually 22, 8! What a thrill! I'll never forget it.

@@heatherstub I think it fun to have a really good ear, because it helps your favorite performer's know that you're really paying attention.
