    You got alot of great patterns, I had to giggle when you showed the pattern for the smock tops, that made me think about my 9th grade sewing class !! We all made them with the giant pockets, lol....1972-73

      Thank you, LouAnn. How in the wide world of sports did those smocks grow to the height of fashion when we were in junior high? I guess we were all little slips of things and could wear them well. Talk about trendy. Makes me laugh! 😆

    You know my best Christmas was and is when it’s just us, we avoid the family thing. It’s get to be just to much to take. Especially if you have to stay with them. Be blessed!!! Enjoy you very much!

      Thanks so much! They are just, A LOT. But I love them and it really is fun when I can get a chance to de-stress. I'm kinda high maintenance and when you're not around people much, it takes a minute to get used to everybody's personalities. Which are all huge! I do love them -

    so glad to see you again. Yea my family use to be a loud and talkative bunch. There was 9 of us with all our spouses and kids. Now there is only 4 of us left. I love Wawak. It is my go to place when I needed very long metal zipper for replacing in a hunting jumpsuit or a jacket. I use them for my industrial machines when I need needles and bobbins because I can't find them in the stores. I enjoyed the patterns. So many of them I had years ago. Glad you are back. Many blessings.

    There are normally an average of 17 people at our house for Christmas day. For the last couple of years I have been asking for Christmas in St Augustine! Just he and I. No cooking. No mess. No stress. Maybe I should just go ahead and book a room.....

    Great video Jen! I love thrifting for sewing. It stretches a tight budget and I've found some great things. I thrifted a sleeve board for $2, thread organizers 3 of them for $5 (those can be expensive! If something looks a little dated I slap some paint on it and give it a face lift), fabrics, patterns and lots of vintage notions and tools. Thanks Hales! My Grandpa and Great-grandpa were woodworkers but I married a guy who's the "people person." That's fine with me, because I'd rather BE the woodworker! lol! I've thought about trying to make a clapper but I don't have a router. I built a coffee table last summer and resolved that I probably should just stick to painting things. It was a ton of work - turned out fantastic but it was a whole lot less like sewing than I thought. Good learning experience, though! You're fortunate to have a Dad who loves woodworking! I know you can also make a tailor's ham, but I just never got around to buying the wood shavings to stuff it with. They say you can use bedding from the pet store - I never really investigated that but in the end, the path of least resistance is just to order or buy one for about $8 (probably 10 pounds there). Amazon is my best friend anyway - or Wawak! 😁

      Thanks Cathy - I keep meaning to check and see if we have a Salvation Army nearby, because they usually will have patterns. And cheap! I got the dress form on the left on Craigslist, and the one on the right is just a mannequin from a store. I don't have a really good recommendation - but I wouldn't get what I got, which is a gray Singer that adjusts with a key. There are some TH-cam videos that talk about dress forms. Or you can always make your own with duct tape, although I didn't find that worked for me. I wish I were more knowledgeable about them - sorry, that's about the best I can do. If I run across a really good one for cheap, I'll let you know.

    Sometime last year you mentioned that one should not prewash new fabric before storing and I haven't heard why - probably missed your explanation! I might have heard wrong and you said later you would explain. I prewash because you never know when you will have the urge to sew and I store my fabric in lidded cardboard boxes folded according to type which is only 12 boxes or so. Please explain.

    • @TodayinJensSewingRoom
      @TodayinJensSewingRoom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lavada! You're absolutely right, you should always pre-wash before sewing. I generally do pre-wash my fabric before I fold it up to store it. I always pre-wash it before I sew it. You just never know what a fabric is going to do, so best to wash it before you sew it into a beautiful garment only to have the fabric betray you in the wash! I even pre-washed some quilting cotton from Hobby Lobby last year and the colors bled. You just never know.
      I went back to figure out where I said that I wasn't going to prewash the fabric before storing it, and it was in the fabric haul I did on November 6. Of course I can't keep a thought in my head so I never explained why! I am seriously such a scatterbrain. 🙄 I've stored them unwashed, but will absolutely wash them before I sew them. Here's why I'm not washing them yet:
      I have some crinkled rayon from JoAnn's that, after washing, has proven to be an absolute bear to fold and store. It just wants to shrink up width-wise and you can never get a good, equal fold going. The trouble with crinkle rayon is that if you iron it, the wrinkles all come out. Except that they're supposed to be there. And the next time you wash it, they'll be there. So for the purposes of getting it to lay flat and wrap easily on a piece of cardboard to store, it's just easier to wait until I want to sew it before I wash it. That stuff just wants to misbehave in general. You see that pink maxi dress behind me on the dress form? NIGHTMARE FABRIC. Talk about a mismatch to the pattern! It just wants to stretch out of shape all over the place. I pre-washed it, stored it, ironed it, cut it out, then sewed it and had problem after problem. The purple gauze I'm sewing right now was similar but didn't have the stretch problem because it's 100% cotton, no rayon. My impression is that if it's crinkled, you can forget about getting a consistent folded edge going to wrap onto a bolt or some cardboard. Or even just to fold up in general.
      So that's what I was thinking about when I said I wasn't going to wash my fabric until I was ready to use it. I've always been taught to pre-wash and ALWAYS do before I sew. Pre-washing before storing is also very smart because you remove anything that might damage the fabric over time. So you are really smart to do that, especially since you're storing in lidded boxes. All my fabric is on shelves in the open. They're not in direct sunlight so I don't think they'll fade, but I do have to be careful of not leaving them too long and having permanent creases form and fade from having been folded onto a "bolt."
      So, long answer but thanks for the reminder. I should probably say something in an upcoming video. I appreciate you asking me about that! 😁
