Shouldn`t the title of this video be "Don`t restore an antiques mirror" rather than "How to.....???? Just sayin.

What a complete waste of a video. The title reads, "how to restore antique mirrors"...but should be "don't restore antique mirrors.

Q: When did they stop using mercury in mirrors?
A: Mirror makers stopped using mercury in the 1840s, instead switching to silver nitrate, which is still used today.

I was looking for How To videos about how to resilver an old mirror I have (not sure if it's antique or merely looks like) and I've got to say that this is an important video you've made. I definitely did not know about before the possible mercury. I will look for a professional or leave as it is. Thank You!

Hi there. Very informative about mirros being coated with mercury! I never knew and and so happy to have learned this just now! Could anyone tell me how to tell if your mirror has mercury or not. I have seen people "re-silvering" mirrors. Is that the same thing? I do not want to harm the environment over a mirror! Thanks for your input!

It doesn't actually matter. She's talking about the abundance of mercury in our oceans but it's really just a virtue signal. We could all go out back and resurface our mirrors at once tomorrow and it won't ever have the impact CHINA has on our oceans every day.

I would always get so damn irritated with these idiots when they would ask me to resilver their beautiful mid-19th century or early mirrors. Much of the time there was hardly a blemish at all in the original mercury-tin slivering. It’s amazing how well that technique held up over time. But people would rather wipe away the originality and important history of a piece just to make it more “shiny.” The environmental concerns are pretty moot in my opinion because believe me there are not very many mercury mirrors lying in acid tubs around the world being stripped each day to make much of a significant impact on the environment, if that truly is the main concern here. Just please don’t destroy the originality of a piece of significant history. It’s like resurfacing a beautifully gilded girandole frame, refinishing an original mahogany surface on a early Federal demilune, or polishing away a centuries old patina from a 1792 US disme. Don’t do it. Period.

There are many chemical disposal plants. Why can't I sand it on a garbage bag then give the dust to a plant? I would go the extra mile because it is worth it.
