From interviews, the recording we've been listening to all this time is their studio version, but it's lost quality over time since it's a tape recording of a radio broadcast, recorded off tape and back to computer, probably mp3 compressed at some point, etc.
As the song was playing I was picturing them playing in a massive outdoor venue to thousands of people. Then the song ended and I heard the sparse claps of like, a couple people, reminding me that this is a very small band playing for a moderate crowd. The song has had such a large impact on me that I defaulted to imagining a large crowd of thousands, despite that not being the case. Except, now this song IS playing for a crowd of thousands, including me and you! It had already been played to millions before this too. Such an amazing thing.
I was in a band where we played a decent sized festival, but nobody came to specifically see us. They came for the bigger bands, and while a couple thousand people saw us play few of them likely remember us.
Well people get older y'know, and it does make sense for the older ones probably not exactly knowing the internet, this band was in europe (Germany), and not the US which i think mostly already had internet access back in the 90's. But eh i could be wrong
This is one of my favorite lost media mysteries. My mom sprung it on me today that it had been found. Funnily enough, my dad looked the song up and listened and casually says he had no idea it was lost because apparently he’s heard it before. When he was active duty in the US Amry, he was in Germany around that time and apparently remembers hearing lol
My House called this "Happiness has to be fought for." And it sure was. A ton of people on the net are joyed to find it, and being the receiving end of net fame over a single tape a guy decided to record from a radio broadcast and share online has gotta be exhilarating.
These guys sound amazing playing live! How in God's name were they not successful? I hope they get all the credit and success they deserve decades ago.
It’s definitely not a hoax. 99% of bands only last a little while, maybe record some songs, and then move on with life. Unfortunately FEX was one of those.
@superradness it’s confusing to me how anyone can even consider that FEX isn’t the real creator because “we haven’t found the version Darius recorded”. We have tons of evidence, pictures of the band playing together, 2 new versions of subways of your mind, more new songs, and it’s been confirmed by both Lydia and NDR.
@ there’s a high chance it’s a demo since most of the song is different. Also, I think the reason why the voice sounds stranger is because of the tape warping with age
I have literally been obsessed with this song for like 2 or 3 years. It feels so damn good to have this conclusion. Oowee I can't wait for the rerelease!
All those people at their early shows, amazing to me no one remembered the song online when the search was going on! I wonder if people who remembered it came across TMMS, but just couldn’t remember the title or band name.
Until I was robbed recently this year, I had amassed a collection of rare music. One was a CD-R of local bands from where I am from. The CD-R was passed to me during a Melvins show around 2000. It had some good songs from completely unknown bands. There were also various CDs from a completely unknown hip hop artist. There is a huge pool of lostwave in reality. I even had old cassettes friends passed to me with songs that have never even been played live or recorded professionally. It happens often. I had been following this one for many years. Having this mystery solved is truly colossal imo.
Well look at it like this. The audience at this show was probably between the ages of 18-30, so it would put the youngest people in the audience in their early to mid 50's when the search really picked up around 2019. A bunch of German Gen Xers and Boomers aren't in the same circles at all as us here. And the even the few that are, aren't gonna be likely to have been around these guys in Germany or heard of em at the time.
How many of those people would randomly be browsing the internet and happen to come across a search for the name of a band behind a song that played at a festival nearly 40 years ago. Not very many.

One of the things I find fascinating from this mystery's conclusion is how people around the Internet gave it "Like The Wind" as a placeholder title because it's the first line of the song, and then turns out the actual title is the last line sung in the chorus.
Given that they played it live in front of a large audience and gave out demo cassettes it is quite amazing that this song and band remained lost for so long.

1:24 it says „Entstehung der Musikkassette“ which means the production/recording of the music cassette, that implies that there was a finished recording of the song
This is an advertising poster from PHILIPS. The Dutch company launched the cassette on the market in 1963 under the brand name *MusiCassette®* In German, the correct name for _tape_ would be "Musikkassette". "Die Entstehung der MusiCassette" here means the origin/history of the product - so, the music cassette in general. Just a little explanation about the poster 😉
The version we've all been listening to over the years was their studio version, according to the synth player. They were possibly promoting their studio cassette, which had 3 songs on it.

It may be that if the audience isn't separately mic'd up, you'd likely only hear a few people in the front that the vocal mics picked up.

Its amazing not only to have a live recording, but a soundboard recording!!
That's what I thought the radio version was.
the ending (3:20) is so satisfying on the live version, it feels like going to heaven but better
For some reason I always pictured them performing this in pitch black
The singing on the original recording sounded so gritty I thought they would be wearing all black with goth makeup
I always imagined a dark room, maybe some purple lighting with brick walls in the background.
In the 1980s, there were so many bands they had such a similar sound
What's more is during the search of this song many then unknown bands and songs were discovered
Damn that's a banger version of this song! I really hope they can record a new version with drums and synths, those add so much to the song.
