    Thanks for doing this! I have almost finished the book and do not really have anyone to talk to about the book - so it's quite interesting to hear other's opinion on it!
    God it's a beautiful book.

    Fascinating! I love this book. The Karamazov brothers would be at home at any pre-covid Irish wedding or funeral! I’m happy Dostoyevsky took his time making sure we got to know all the personalities before the story takes off. I can get confused with Russian names, but he made it easy for me. Speaking of the description of poverty, this is a late Victorian novel and the poor in England are described in similar ways in London and mill or mining centres. Thanks for your hard work. Deb

    I’m watching this with only 50 pages to finish this amazing book as a way to live it a little longer before finishing it. I’m no expert by any measure but I recommend everyone really taking their time to read the first half. It all comes together in the latter half. At the end you really go through so many aha moments about the start!

    in book 4, i really doubt the general offered to beat his own child literally. it was meant to say "hey asshole, how much more do you want my kid to suffer?"

    Thank you for the analysis! By the way, the stress is on the second A, not the final O ("KaraMAzov"). Also, AlyOsha, not AlyOOsha - little Alex.
    I would also like to add that you're mixing up the two archetypal Russian characters a bit - the martyr is not strictly the same as the blessed fool (the yurodivy).

    The name Карамазов is pronounced Ka-ra-MA-zav. The accent is on the third syllable and the o is pronounced almost the same as the a's.

    I just finished book 4 and rushed to watch this video. I feel like you could have broken this down in much more detail. This seems like a VERY short synopsis of each book and then some discussion. I would have enjoyed a 20 minute plus video on each book individually in order to have more discussion on the details contained within each book. Maybe you will discuss further books in more detail but this left me wanting more.

    Thanks, enjoyed this. Something that really struck me as being quite out of place was the incident where Ivan elbowed Maksimov in the chest off the carriage. Do you have any thoughts on that, as it was a sudden burst of seemingly random violence - I feel like Ivan is quite perceptive as to whom he feels are leeches on Russia/ others and doesn't suffer their company, but I felt it was odd all the same.

  • @emilypaxton5601
    @emilypaxton5601 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't think Ivan is a devil! I think he is supposed to be a genuinely good person who is just struggling with what it means to be good - but what makes him good is the fact that he is continually striving after good, even if he doesn't know how to go about it. He uses cynicism to mask his vulnerability in that sense. I think the only true "devils" in the novel are the "father" and the lackeu. All the other characters, even when their striving is imperfect and/or deeply flawed, *are* striving towards good.
