    I too run a screen printing shop, and also a clothing line. I've gone as far as to buy a Chinese leather shoe patcher and been sewing my patches on to hats. I too have this machine, that I used before I determined the hats it was producing were not suitable to sell to consumer. I get lines on the hat where the top part presses into the hat and leaves a crease, and also I get wilts in the middle of the hat on either side of the patch I'm guessing because my full crown hats /Richardson 112s and yupoong classic and retro truckers, are not flush with the bottom plate, there is a gap. Man there has got to be a better more efficient way of getting these patches onto these hats than sewing them myself. Could you please share if you ever found a work around for the full crown hats, I don't require a video a verbal explanation would be fine. And also do you not get like starched creased marks on the hat from the heat press? I'll gladly drop 1200 dollars on a heattronix or stahls heat press if I could churn out hats of a quality that a customer won't see that crease and the dad gum patch will just be on there. Very frustrating. I appreciate your wisdom, patience, and calm demeanor. I'm not sure any hat heat press will work for me. Is there any tips or suggestions you could give me?

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just bought a chinese shoe patcher myself! Haven't even stitched with it yet, building a base for it now. Funny you mentioned the leather patches, that was one of the reasons I wanted the patcher. As for pressing vinyl onto the Richardson style hats, yes, I did finally get this little press to work on those too. I need to do a video on that update, but in simplest terms, I made a accessory bottom insert that matches the profile of those hats. I lay it on top of the bottom platen to correct the shape and top platen is a little flexible so it conforms. It might take a couple times, I can get a good press on them now. Also, someone in the comments suggested a heat press "pillow" for this problem too, but I've yet to try that.

      @@SelfMadeProject the CLSP is solid. I have experimented with my hat press without the heat with all types of glues, hot glue guns, barges leather cement, etc etc. I was thinking about making a platen myself that would fit the machine and the larger crown hats better, but scratching my head as to how to go about it, I think my buddy with a lathe could probably do me a bowl that I could use but I am at odds as to how to approach getting the measurements correct. I see there are all sorts of hat presses on the market geo knight, stahls, sisers, etc. I hate to do it but my experimentations are about over, that heatronix 360 iq video on TH-cam makes it looks so effortless and flawless I think I am just going to fork up the 1600$ and just end my frustration. I admire you tho sir, keep up the good work up there.

And while doing so it's very easy to scrape the black finish off... Which from what I understand hurts the long term integrity of the press... Especially a little guy like that.

    Several things you did wrong. It's not the hats or the press. Adjust the band to make tighter. And you dry press it to make the fabric lay down. No problem. I think you wanted it to work perfectly with no thought or planning. That's ok though you said you are newbie. We live and learn.

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ha! You have no idea what you're talking about. I made that video 2 years ago, and since have made hundreds of hats. Not a newbie. This press works great for foam front trucker hats. Perfect hat every time. It will not, however do a good job on structured or 6 panel hats. The platen simply isn't the correct shape for those hats. It doesn't matter how much you stretch the hat, the platen determines the contact area, not how tight the hat is. If you try to "dry" press those hats first, you'll end up with pressed in crease, effectively ruining the hat. I think it was pretty clear in the video that this press works for some hats, and won't work on others. Probably shouldn't comment on things you've never done yourself.
