It's not a matter of training. It's a matter of purposely driving dangerously.
Half of all crashes here involve riding intoxicated. A large portion of riders have no motorcycle permit or training at all.
Crashing a bike in the US is very rarely a lack of skill, and almost entirely a lack of being safe in general.

As a rider previously from CA, I'm more and more against lane splitting. I'm obviously ok with it at a stop light or sign but splitting lanes on a HW is a "little" dangerous.

Recently I was following a suv that suddenly stopped in front of me as we crested a hump back bridge.
    I held back, 15m.
SUV didn’t move, for several seconds.
Then slowly backed up; down the incline towards me!
Now, I can back away a little, but it’s not easy on a tall adv bike .
I was lucky to veer kerbside, and finally my horn and headlights registered.
    Then she reversed again!!!
My front tyre was bumped, and I was so nearly on my side, or over the parapet of the stone bridge!
Luck again and I righted the bike with enough room to accelerate off to the side.
Now parallel to her seat, I was kinda pissed off, and shouted dumbly from behind my visor, and her window.
She seemed stressed, and had clearly no clue what to do especially as she had so few options too!
A line of cars had started up the other side of the narrow bridge, and she had had to stop.
All blind to me, behind her big truck.
And I was near invisible to her.
Mebbe not completely invisible, but blind to her imagination that a biker might be behind her. Realistically, a one in a thousand or less chance.
My initial reaction is one of ‘you could have killed me, bitch, but I relented a little, and shouted that bikes don’t have reverse gear, duh!
She’d stopped, so I could paddle back a bit, and then get past.
I feel a little embarrassed now that I yelled at her about this.
It’s such a rare, unique situation for a car driver.
Not so unique for a biker, so just one to add to the dossier?
I was now on a 20%, one in five upward incline on the bridge, and accelerated into the clear space ahead of me.
A little wobbly, I took off with a smidgen more throttle than planned, and a slow start.
My barkbuster took out the wing mirror.
    Further unsettling my throttle grip.
I took off over the apex of the bridge with a thrilling wheelie, higher than I’d ever imagined possible;…past the line of six car drivers , all pissed off at the stubborn SUV driver!
    Oops.
Now travelling fast than I’d anticipated, I hurtled for the narrow gap offered by the sixth car and the stone wall.
It was all could do to miss both and survive.
So the aggressive, impetulant dangerous mad biker sped away from the (unfortunate, innocent, accidental and initially benign scenario on full throttle, millimetres from a collision with car, wall,or both!
Not my proudest reaction to a tricky, and ( for a biker ) potentially injurious situation, and I have to reflect that the perceived risk for drivers of cars might be a sub 5.mph bump.
For me the potential of a two tonne SUV rolling over my chest.
As a biker we have to extend our danger antennas way beyond drivers of cars; entirely because our potential outcomes in any collision are so much more likely to end in injury.
But we can’t assume drivers will operate with the knowledge we have of the dangers.
We have to add defensive and preemptive techniques, as well as admitting our own inadequacies.
Anyway, doesn’t matter whose fault it was if you’ll never ride again due to injury.
    Ca’ canny, (in Scots)
    Ride clever.
Mostly I am now embarrassed by my anger, as this was such an unprecedented situation for all involved.
The main ingredient is the potential death of the unseen me.
    But!
I was a professional truck driver for years, and know fine about blind spots.
As a professional trucker I would have shredded the biker for sitting in my blind spot.
As a car driver, I have never encountered this scenario.
In forty years on the road .
I probably left the scene looking like an angry dick biker arse.
    On reflection!
It’s like meeting a giant squid that’s never been to the shopping mall before.
It’s mostly luck that will ensure it gets back to the sea and doesn’t eat you on the way!
    My take?
Expect the impossible, the unlikely and the deliberate and ride with enormous dollops of anticipation and reading the possible scenarios ahead, especially at traffic exchanges.

I lived in China for years and rode a motorcycle there the whole time. I was applying these principles before you were online and they work. However, you have to apply them more often than you do here in the states. The problem is in China. a lot of people don’t even take the drivers exam. I know this for a fact. They have someone else do it for them and therefore they don’t really know how to drive. So it makes for a chaotic conglomeration of metal and plastic and rubber on the highways. Fortunately, you don’t drive too fast over there. I think God every day that I didn’t lay it down in China but I came so close so many times thank God I had a father who was a great rider and told me everything I know.

My dad taught me growing up to never swerve or brake hard for animals while driving a car. No reason to kill myself to avoid running over a squirrel, skunk, raccoon etc. only time to do it is exactly like you said lane change if possible and viable. Take the safest route for YOU. It really does suck and it can sometimes hurt to think about, but your life is worth more then a random animal that’s in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There’s a surprising amount of mindsets and skills that can be used in both a car and on a bike.

@23:00 - Having to run over road debris can be terrifying for anyone who isn't prepared mentally with the correct skills. If you've ever ridden dirt bikes and jumped them then apply the same principle. First, stand up on your pegs with the balls of your feet on the pegs. Right before you go over the "jump" road debris, you compress the suspension with your weight, pull up on the front, and apply throttle. You want to remove as much weight off the front end as possible. You also want to hold tight to the grips so the impact with the front tire doesn't cause you to loose control.

18:40 I was crossing a gravel road, totally focused, and a snake appeared. Without a chance to dodge, I just raised my legs to avoid getting bitten, and I didn't even look back. I didn't plan it, but.....

almost all of the videos and crashes (except the speedy ones) wouldnt have happened with a decent formation BEFORE getting a bike, this is why in France its so hard to get it, because they drill pretty much everything you say every video into you, open lane pattern, watch your corners and dead angles, etc...
USA need to regulate this asap because way too much crash and people getting hurt for failure to even understand what they do wrong

@Sol_Rosenberg It's proven that lane filtering (moving through traffic slowly when it's stopped) increases safety and lessens traffic congestion. The only reason ppl don't like it is because of jealousy and/or envy. And that's a reflection of their character. I agree that lane SPLITTING (when traffic is moving) can be dangerous. Especially when it involves careless riders that are speeding.

Dude so obsessed with them "open book fractures".. Beginning to doubt that that is healthy...
23:02 Slow down before you get to the branch, make your front wheel light by accelerating slightly (to make sure your front tire doesn't "stick" on the branch) just before and while going over it with your front wheel, and go straight over while slightly standing up on your bike knees slightly bent (so you have pressure on the pegs, and you can use your legs as suspension, that'll give you the most control) but with your weight mostly on the rear tire. That's how I would handle that. Just like I would coming across a branch while off-roading.. Just make sure your front is not loaded anyway (so no braking into the branch), because the branch will stick under it and it'll slide out from under you.. basically pull a mini wheelie without your tire actually coming loose, just make it really light... Your rear wheel is powered so, it'll go over anyway.. Also aim for the bit that is already touching the road, otherwise it (the stick) might roll on you and catch somewhere else.. and if it gets caught on the bike somewhere and then it gets under your rear wheel you might still have a problem. So lowest point of the branch without side branches, preferably touching the road already so the branch doesn't move too much, and a light front wheel... Standing, knees bent so you can absorb the "bump" without any drama.

going from a newb to someone who can confidently handle unusual situations takes a) lots of miles, obviously, but also b) gently trying to find your own limits as well as those of your bike. gently is the operative word here. gently and gradually.
if you just commute the same straight-ass stretch of road at 50mph every day, you simply won’t get better even if you rack up the miles and the years. go to new places, ride in different situations, ride with people, ride more aggressively, etc. so just try to gently find those limits, because without that, you’ll be extremely unprepared if shit hits the fan.

9:32 Eyeglass World on US 192 is in Florida. Lane splitting is illegal there. TBH I don't think I'd split anywhere in the US, legal or not. People here get really ticked if they perceive anyone getting an advantage over their position in traffic, legal or not, and the law of gross tonnage applies.

@13:00 In Europe there is no such thing as a "new rider", since to ride a bike over 125 CC requires a CBT, theory test, lessons, mod1 (basic handling) test, and a road test. This guy should know how to ride. One thing you didn't pick up on is that all the other bikes are cruisers and none of them stopped to help. So maybe he's not part of the group ride. Maybe he's just trying to get past it while they are moving around. Just a dumb over-takeing error in the wet. Note the ironic "ride safely" sign. It must happen a lot there!
While I'm here: the "perfect example" at 21:00 Could have been more perfect if he had used 2 finger braking around the bend. The breaks would have been applied 1/2 second earlier and the down shift could have been while braking instead of a pause.

I mean sure people learn to ride with tests and all that good stuff but still make a mistake, you learn how to drive "safely" with lessons and at a exam and learn how to ride/drive with more road experience
