I couldn't finish this game in my childhood. It was so difficult. But after 18 years I finished this game in the emulator. It felt good to have it completed.
Like many of Rare's best games, it looks, sounds, and plays phenomenally, and requires absolute perfection to stand a chance to beat it. It's a fantastic title that really pushed the NES, but it really forces you to focus and master it for any satisfaction. It's not a casual game by any means!
NintendoComplete WWF Wrestlemania, WWF Wrestlemania Challenge, Beetlejuice, Time Lord, and Wizard n' Warriors doesn't look, play, and even sound phomenally. And all are Rare games.
Oswald Epic Loquendero I only said the best, not all of them ;) Wizards and Warriors, Captain Skyhawk, Solar Jetman, some others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
I’ve always loved how you can see so many ideas and concepts in this game that would later materialize in Donkey Kong Country. The music, the ahead-of-its-time graphics and gameplay, and even the riding of animals, it’s all here, in an early format!
One of the great NES classics! The colors and designs still look visually impressive even by today's standards! Devs truly did an amazing job. This was one of my childhood favorites 👍
I was so happy when I saw you slam into the wall on the bike stage. 1) it was hilarious and 2.) it reminds us that you are human and can make mistakes. That’s one of the things I love about your playthroughs. You may mess up but you still clear it. 😁
I wonder how many times I raged quit this game as a kid. The racer part of the game always made my controller jump out of my hands and against the wall lol
Just watching you play some of these levels my heart sinks into my stomach especially rat race! Holy hell they don’t make ‘em like this anymore! The puzzles, mazes, and memorization skills are off ten charts. Well done. Seems they took a lot a lot of concepts from TMNT games such as the hoverboards, surfboards, and falling through platforms quickly while avoiding instant death from walls closing in and improved upon it so much , without lagging which always dragged out the fun of TMNt NeS releases. also the falling through platforms thing is done in Mega Man but never quite as intense as rat race). You’d think the NES had blast processing like the SEGA lol.
Dang, as a kid I only ever made it to arctic caverns, never even came close to beating it. Kinda glad, it would have taken years of practice go beat the whole game!
As a kid this was the one game on the NES that I was never able to complete. Many hours playing and on a good day could maybe could get as far as the second last level. But so many parts of this game required absolute perfection with no room for error, so it was one of those games only got close to the end a handful of times. Finally I've seen the last level and what i missed!
The one thing that kills you the most in this game is that a double tap causes your toad to run uncontrollably for a headbutt, and many times you need to move in very tiny and very quick increments only to see your toad dash into spikes, pits, etc.
I feel so bad for the many gamer kids that inhabited our planet back then. If only they got to see the rest of the game past level 3, which I assume most never did, they'd be in for something even more sadistic than level 3 itself. I've already beaten this game 7 times in the last two weeks since I first beat it, so I'm quite happy to be able to say that I've conquered one of the NES library's top 5 most toughest games ever made. Now on to playing a game that is an illusion and is a trap devisut by Satan......
i beat this game a couple years ago...but i can't tell you how many times i died swimming in the water. between that and the racer part towards the end where you have to press the right direction at exactly the right time...may have shaved a couple years off my life haha. great vids btw!
Unearth07 Thanks! And that part was pretty rough, like the entire latter part of the game is :) For me the roughest level that gave me nightmares of the Game Over screen was the one where you get chased by Satan's lollipop (or Austin Powers decor? I have no idea wtf that circle is). I raged soooooo hard at that, if your timing isn't perfect itll steamroll you every time. Haha I'm almost angry just thinking about it again
I doubt there is anyone under the age of 25 to watch this video, but if you have somehow stumbled here there's an important thing to note about this game because this playthrough is very misleading. When you were a kid playing this game on the NES, you only played the first couple of levels. Virtually none of us ever made it past about the 10 minute mark in the video. Obviously there was no save, no internet, no resources of any kind, so if you ever had the chance to see someone get deeper into this game you dropped whatever you were doing and watched. It was likely the only time your curious mind would ever see it.
Back in the day as a kiddo, I had the Sega Genesis version of this. I took that Warp in Turbo Tunnel every time once I discovered it & avoided Level 4 like the plague... & here, you make Level 4 look frickin easy... O_0
I managed to beat it only once on the actual console, way back in the 90s... not many modern games can compare to this one in terms of difficulty. Battletoads & Double Dragon was a much easier game for sure. ;) Would love to see more NES/FC longplays of difficult games like this one, makes for a good show!
Awesome channel! Just discovered this cuz I randomly wanted to see a life force playthrough (well done BTW). This game was sooo hard, I don't recall if I ever beat it, I remember getting pretty frustrated at the 'Volkmire"s Inferno" level... Where I'm currently paused. I guess I'll see if the levels after this refresh my memory... Seriously though, I just browse through some of your playlists and the amount of content is unbelievable. Respect
Very nice job there, especially at last checkpoint of Terra Tubes and Rat Races. You also pulled a lot of risky moves lol, I even got nervous by watching it.
Was so into this game as a kid having seen it in Nintendo Power. I remember getting it for my birthday, thinking the first stage was OK, and everything going downhill from there. The second stage was a total departure, and the third...I must have spent weeks trying to clear the Turbo Tunnel stage, even trying to memorize the layout from the maps in NP. I kind of feel like Battletoads and Cuphead are similar: a great idea that was ruined by an insane difficulty level, and the need to deviate from what people (or at least I) wanted: a straight forward side-scrolling platformer/beat-em up. I can never understand why developers shove multiple genres into a single title and force it on the player. To those that finished this game (I only got to the water stage), I applaud you!
Hey it makes you get your money worth in playing time. Only way to beat it is dedicate a shit ton of time. I’m kind of like you in that their was a point where I couldn’t dedicate more time. I’m the inferno level was it for me. The fact I made it past the snakes though was a miracle the last room is a bitch and the way this guy did it I believe is the most difficult way of getting through that room. No disrespect to those who have beaten it but the time out into that is sickening in my opinion! Too much video game for one person. Still I love the game and everything about it. Def a good challenge for your mind.
I’m working on making a Dark Queen costume. I have the wig, the bandeau/strapless leotard, the gloves, and the cape. I just need the boots and the staff.
I really did beat the turbo tunnel once!! I was about out of lives and hit game over in the surf level. You kinda get into a rhythm with the music, and that part where you jump without a ramp was the trickiest for me.
Follow up from my comment last year-- 1) Volkmire's Inferno (Level 7) was the Level that caused me the most Game Overs (2nd was probably Rat Race--Level 10). I had to use the Warp in Karnath's Lair (Level 6) to skip THAT headache. You must've REALLY got your A-Game on in this playthrough! 2) In Terra Tubes (Level 9) how are you able to approach the robots without them blowing up on you?! Every time I got too close, they'd self-destruct and OHKO me!
My favourite & only NES game that I ever owned other than SMB & Duck Hunt which came with the NES, every other game I ever beat were rentals. I chose wisely ☺ They did this game dirty with that animated pilot though 😂 I feel that the top score of 999,999 should jump to 1 million when the game is completed because you can achieve that top score well before the end. Great game, NES GOAT as far as I'm concerned.
Great game play and sorry to point this out but you missed my favorite part of the game at 10:10 where you were supposed to run into that pole that has that glowing at the base. The warp speed would have taken you one level ahead . That was always my favorite part to try ❤
That level is awful. If it wasn't for one or two jumps in the last stage, I think it would probably be the hardest stage in the game. It was for me, at least.
I’d like to have a conversation with the developers of many of the 8-bit games. How were we as kids supposed to beat these things? I loved my Nintendo but the developers of the era had a really messed up idea of what makes a game good.
Allegedly, it was so people wouldn't easily finish rented games. Apparently some Japanese versions of games are easier because rental was rare or non-existant there. However I can also see those times simply being videogames still finding their full footing after exploding among as a masses (when you look back, the leaps forward made in terms of visuals and gameplay were incredible those years) and game designers were still "learning".
Oh that one has horrible rng. You have to learn to attack the worm things in the water and to lead the sharks away from that opening so you can hit the checkpoint before the second wheel chase segment.
My hat's off to you you make this look so easy one of my favorite games is kid growing up but it was tough... when I finally completed it I thought I Ruled the World LOL
Everyone praises this game up and down. Don't get me wrong its a great looking game with good music and it really did an amazing job showing what the Nes was capable of. TBH probably the worst 2 player game made, fun for the first 10 minutes but ultimately unplayable 2 player because of the ridiculous player v player damage having a friend play is supposed to make a tough game easier or at least more fun not the opposite. There's hard and Nintendo hard, this is next level hard eventually it makes the game unenjoyable except for the hardcore challenge addicts out there.
As crazy as this may sound, Battletoads, with its sheer personality, variety of fully realized play styles, and distinct auteur-like "voice", was one of if not THE first game that made me realize video games could be art. Unfortunately, that notion is all too common today and almost exclusively refers to games that try so hard to be film or literature that they must side-line that which makes this medium unique, the actual gameplay.
I friggen died alot in turbo sections even till i reached the dark queen. My notes helped me down to 4 deaths per run average. First run the lowblow snowman ended my run🤬🤬🤬🤬 i thought i got kinda far but nope😂 Got to the pipes and the washer and spikes always got me. Finally the dark queen. This runner makes this game look easy👍👍
This game just like it's sequel leads you on with the first stage, but then it's all downhill after that. There's way too many race or riding theme's not excluding the bungee jumping, snake, and surf stages, and non of them are fun levels either. If only they had patterned the games around their first stage stylistically on both it would have been much better with a lot more replay value. Also, this game was full of cheap instant kill set ups which you learned about through trial and error at the expense of your lives, continues, and patience. One of the rare games that I liked but gave up on with no regrets, but I loved the visuals at least
My only gripe about this game was despite the title there more platforming and less 'battle' going on. Ironically Battletoads/Double Dragon is my favorite in this franchise because it fixed that problem.
Mad props to whoever did the music for this game
That's David Wise who also composed the music for Donkey Kong Country
