If the waitress insisted on 2, it’s because they don’t want to have to throw away too much. Also, yes, almost every place cooks it dishes with fresh ingredients. The food in Porto is amazing, so is the port wine 😄 Throughout most op Europe, bread and pastries are made daily, sold in bakeries which you can find in any city or small village.

I live in a place in Spain near Portugal (Galicia) and it's not uncommon for the waiter to advise you about the amount of food you are going to order in order to prevent food waste I assume.

Lol, the centers of Rome, Florence, Milan, Bratislava, Vienna, Le Mans, Paris, Barcelona are all like that, pedestrian only, just to mention a few of the cities I've visited, But I'm pretty sure that's the standard in Europe, you move by foot in the old city centers. Having a line of cars to move from where you eat to where you have fun to where you socialize to where you shop is one of the most insane US habits I can think of.

    • @SatieSatie
      @SatieSatie ปีที่แล้ว +1

True! Many city centers in Europe are so old and their streets so winding that cars can't be driven there. We also have large shopping streets that have been converted into pedestrian walks after banning cars.

Being from Porto I am extremely happy you did a reaction to my home town. Francesinha's gravy has its origins in the French "croque-monsieur". A Portuguese man called Daniel David Silva, who was an immigrant in France, opened his restaurant in Porto in 1934 and adapted the French recipe to what is now Francesinha. His gravy was a secret and other restaurants have their own gravy. I think you should visit Porto and see what this special city has to offer.

The Francesinha is a huge sandwich made with large slices of plain bread loaded up with layers of meat - ham, beef steak, smoked sausage, and fresh sausage. The sandwich is then covered in melted cheese and covered with a tangy tomato, garlic, and beer sauce. You can get a Francesinha Especial by adding a fried egg. Because no Portuguese sandwich is complete without potatoes, even this so-called “heart attack on a plate” usually comes with French fries.

The waitress shouldn't get fired at all. I'd appreciate such an advise. Money and sales shouldn't always be the #1 priority... and that third sandwich would have gone to another customer anyways.

I am a 54 year old born and raised Portuguese. This is a dish that has never tempted me and I do like the robust Portuguese comfort dishes (Portuguese Stew, the different Feijoada versions, Migas, Fish Soup, etc, etc). A lot of friends have told me that it can be a bit too rich.
The Corn bread (Broa de milho) is usually WAY better in the inner northern regions of Portugal. The one we have in cities is only a pale image, if that, of the one people still bake in the smaller towns and villages. It is just the reality.
As for the Pasteis de Nata, the very best I ever had (and I tried from a LOT of places) were the ones from Palácio Hotel Estoril. Don't know if this is still the case, but they used to sell them exclusively for the Estoril Golf and (maybe) for the Hotel. But they were in a class of their own.
The difference between American and Portuguese mentality made me laugh. There are pros and cons to both, off course.

In Portugal, if the waiter recommends a smaller items or portion size, I would definitely take it.

Food across Europe is generally very good and very tasty. Every country has it's own speciality. However EU laws governing food quality are extremely strict from the treatment of animals right up to the time it reaches the table. Yesterday I bought two peppered sirloin stakes in a large supermarket in Galway Ireland. For treacability purposes the farmer who reared the animal had his name , his address and his photo on the packaging . Needless to say it was beautifully tender, tasty and had no preservatives or hormones in it , just pure meat. One thing the EU does is make sure it's citizens eat only the finest food.

The waitress did a splendid job, really.
More than selling just one more sandwich, these places want you to leave the place feeling like you must tell everyone to go there. Free pub, so to speak.
What would happen to a sandwich marinated in hot gravy just sitting on the table waiting for however long you'll take to eat the other two? I can imagine it'd taste like something you wouldn't want to eat again. Or if another customer sees an nearly whole sandwich being sent back without knowing the full story, will he think of ordering one? Or will he assume that was so bad the guy who ordered it didn't eat it?
If when you are nearly done you ask for another, the waitress will gladly bring you another one, freshly made.
But having it just sit on the table is bad politics.
Then, there's also minimizing waste. It's a major part of Portuguese culture, probably because of all the famine in mid-20th century the Portuguese had to endure.

In realiity it's almost the same thing if you are a local and probably you can' buy anything in these stores (not all day by the way). Purchasing power from an american or a british tourist is not the same than in southern Europe.

I have (over many years) visited quite a few places in the US and I cannot tell you the number of Americans I have met that have NEVER eaten lamb! I have had so many conversations about the British 'Sunday Roast', about 'mint sauce' with lamb (a concept hard to describe when the other person thinks only of and gets confused with the 'peppermint' flavour) and trying to explain 'Yorkshire Puddings' (again, with the concept of 'pudding' only being a dessert). This mainly applies to those who have never travelled outside the US, don't possess a passport and are quite 'set' in their eating habits. Finally, I should also mention, that some of those conversations were before the 'internet', so harder still as you couldn't then just pull up a photo to explain what your talking about... LOL! 😋

Mmmmm Portuguese tarts😋 weirdly I discovered my love for the traditional Portuguese tart in Australia this year, haven’t really seen any now I’m back in the U.K. they tend to be custard tarts here, very different and In my opinion and not very nice.

Vegemite? Noooo, they’re Portuguese tarts that have been baked with egg custard in soft flaky pastry. They naturally brown during cooking. They’re delicious but expensive.
No cars. Have you seen the size of Portugal?

That's bound to be popular with Americans. As a Brit, the idea of cheese and gravy on a sandwich just doesn't compute.

You can get it n several cities in the north, or with a lot of people from the north, but the best ones are in Porto city.

Some of your reactions are ok, but nothing special. Tho, the worst thing is that you never interact with your viewers. I've never seen your comment, or a heart, or that you even pinned a comment here. You just upload a video and then forget it, like you don't even care. Maybe you could try to put some effort into this channel, and see how your subscriber and view counts increase with time.

Most of Europe are more concerned with a happy customer and the minimum food waste. A happy customer is a repeat customer. Long term profit comes from repeat custom and personal recommendation, and not overselling and fast turnover... so sorry US, keep your chemically infused, over sweetened garbage with artificial taste enhancers and lurid colouring
