Giant Bull Moose Fight!
A mature Giant Bull Moose Fight keeps his two cows close when a younger bull sees them and approaches from a distance. The bigger bull will not tolerate his presence, and they start their head wag/size each other up move across the field. Despite the one being smaller, he suddenly makes his move, and for the next several minutes, they battle with ferocity, pushing each other up and down the hillside, antlers clacking, hair and hooves flying.
At one point they get locked and while they catch their breath and try to pull apart, I had to run with the camera on to get closer. When I got to a better vantage, they had slammed/crashed into a stand of alders. The audio was on, so you can hear it. No video for that part. Then after a minute of utter silence, wondering if they were both alive in there, the loser, bigger bull, comes out first. After he moves off, the winner/underdog emerges and walks off the victor, heading to the cows. The loser then stands downhill gasping for breath, a royal tine snapped and hanging, scuffed with antler scrapes all over. (But he is fine.)
It's tough to film in such high winds, and getting a fight recorded is not easy either. This lasted a while, we were very happy to be able to get this. Enjoy!

It's amazing the amount of stamina they both displayed in this fight. I've seen quite a few bull fights in my day but this one lasted quite some time. cool.
Yeah, same here. Usually we hardly have time to set up and film but these guys actually let us move around. Pity that they ended up in the alders where we couldn't see them. I went in later to check out the damage to the trees. Yikes, what two powerful bull moose can do. Amazing. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I never get tired of watching these amazing animals in their natural habitats. The rut is a very serious part of the season for the moose. We can always adore these absolutely incredible creatures, and how much they amaze us. These two bulls simply just demonstrate the courtship of the available cows to the winner of the battle. That would also mean, to breed for the fourth coming off-spring. One bull will be usually chased away after he loses the fight. It's in ongoing chain of events that we see with this animal through each year.
It has really been educational for us, always is, watching/observing wildlife, and moose especially have been teaching us SO much! We have only witnessed a bull chasing another bull off when the cows are being pursued. When another bull comes around and intends on assuming the other bull's cows, he makes his intention clear by not slinking around the periphery, rather boldly come strutting in with that John Wayne strut, the head wag. When that action starts, we have to be extra sure we have a secure spot near a solid tree, and steady our nerves. Many times these head wag entrances end in one bull deciding not today, and simply whining and wheeling off. They aren't chased that we have ever seen at that point. Interesting, there seems to be a code of ethics. we have also never seen a bull chase the loser of a fight off. I think it's because he's made his point and he's exhausted. Wow, they must be workout, even battle, but in think the younger one came out on top, we age so quickly, all the earth's animals, including us.
Yes, that was a workout to be sure, and for us too, to try to keep up with them in that slop and wind. And indeed, the younger animal came out ahead on this one, which shocked us all, including the losing bull. And they seem to age rather quickly, don't they. The rut is a very stressful time and then on the heels of that drama is the hunt, then comes a nasty winter. It's a tough life. (Yes, we are not exempt from the aging part.)

It's funny, I thought from the beginning that the smaller moose was smarter, more tactical, and would win.
It's usually all about the uphill advantage, ultimately. Pity that he lost his smarts at that point; not two minutes later he was so full of himself he went over to take on a VERY dominant bull in that area and spun out of the bushes after maybe 6 seconds of a round with him. But he did so on his own power, so... We have not seen him lately. (We have seen a couple of instances where youth won out over the larger, older bull.) Thanks for the comment!

First-rate video MooseMan and team. This has to be my second go-around with this video. Without your videography and audio skills along with your intertwined harmony with nature, I would have not ever been able to witness such a battle of the titans. As you well know they are both winners, because of the experience they both gained; on another given day, the outcome could have been different for both bulls.
First off, thank you so much! And yes, as for the bulls, the fight could have gone the other way very easily. As it happened, the winner of this fight had the sand to go challenge another big bull immediately after, like he had time to catch his breath barely, within five minutes! He got his butt chased away in about 3 seconds of actual antler to antler conflict. It's amazing to watch these guys. Thanks for being here.

I watched this video about a year ago to witness this intense fight. I'm sure both animals were tired and spent from the head & neck breaking antler locks. Enjoyed the video again. 👍🏽🤠 12/4/22

Thank you! So as far as how long it takes? We spend day after day hiking in to film the moose for two months. Sometimes we're at the right place, right time, set up, and ready to catch the action. Kind of a needle in the haystack moments these fights. Thanks for watching.

I'm not surprised small man won. He had better technique. He was square with his opponent at all time while his opponent sometimes turned sideways. I knew it was over when tbe big guy tried some spin moves.

Awesome video. I'm not against responsible controlled hunting, but I'd rather watch and take photos and videos of these magnificent animals than shoot them. For those of us who can't access the wilderness like yourself, this is a real great opportunity to witness one of nature's greatest spectacles.
Thanks, I agree. We like to shoot our animals over and over and come back the next day to do it again. Plus we get to see unique behavior that even a lot of hunters don't get to witness (given that they call the bulls in and therefore don't get to watch the whole rut thing unfold.) Yes, attitude is altitude. The smaller bull went to pick a fight right after he won this one, I mean like 3 minutes later! He lost that one. Quickly. I think it lasted 10 seconds. He was fine. Still kept active during the rest of the rut.

It's just what he did and secured the uphill advantage. Pity that he was SO full of himself that he went over and challenged the other BIG bull in the area not 5 minutes later and got shown the door. That fight lasted maybe 3 seconds. Youth. Shoulda known when to quit. The big bull got all the girls.
I've come across areas where moose have been fighting only to find one dead from exhaustion. Once we found them both withen a mile of the fight area.
Wow that is brutal. We thankfully haven't seen that but there are those occasional bulls who get locked and both die from the stress and exhaustion. Rarely hunger. It's a tough time for them for sure. (damn hormones!)
Moose fight like Gentle Men compared to other horned animals... the way they start the fight and end a fight...

That small bull was very aggressive and got the victory, pretty neat battle.
Not only that? but right after this fight he walked over to another bull's cows and fought THAT bigger bull! (He lost, it was a quick fight, but still...he has our respect!

Superb filming. What was the side by side stroll about...assessing each other? Do they ever inflict fatal wounds on each other? And what sort of force would you say they are exerting as the push and shove each other up and down slope? Thrilling fight anyway... 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the questions. The head wag is indeed assessing each other's strengths while also acting as an invitation to rumble. They certainly can inflict fatal wounds. But usually it's lameness issues or eye/head injuries that are survivable...if the bears don't take them. Good question re: what force; they don't come at each other like rams, with a running start, it's usually a pretty flat-footed start, so you figure two 1K -1,200# + pushing and shoving, it's pretty impressive. The uphill side bull generally wins. Thanks for watching.

@@onlyhuman1954 We have yet to determine, after studying many videos of fights and "not today" turn aways, what it is exactly that sets the fight into motion. It's so subtle we've yet to figure it out. Thanks again.
@@MooseManNaturePhotos again. Thanks for replying. Maybe the moose are more like human males by which I mean the 'not today' withdraw from battle can often be observed in men of a certain calibre. Sometimes they just bluster and pose a bit then move away... but then two meet and some hormonal trigger initiates violence. If you ever do conclusively determine why some fight and some don't I would love to know. The natural world is full of wonders. 🌍

We never thought we'd see any action on such a howlingly windy day; they usually bed down, but that day those positive ions had the bulls gunning for a fight. About got blown away filming it. They often appear two toned from the sun bleaching their backs, while their lower bodies are the sleek, dark almost blue/blackish shade. Healthy looking, isn't it?

What a shoot by this wild photographer Hats off to this dare devil may have faced many hardships in shooting and setting the cameras brutal brutal combat of the moose bulls to prove the supremacy and hold their territory.
The bull that you showed at the very end - - is he the victor? Thanks!
Actually he was the loser. He has a broken (nearly off) royal tine on the right and several scuffs on his body. What happens in fights that we've seen, is that the loser emerges first, then the victor. Here, the younger bull had somehow managed to get the upper hand/high ground advantage. They ended up crashing into the alders and both came out with broken tines and scuffs. It was pretty epic! Thanks for the question David.
One doing turn around a couple times trying to get the advantage never seen that before so thanks for something new
It's really something to watch how they spar and then apply those moves to a real fight. It's always about uphill advantage and the threat of a broadside hit. Which we have never yet seen despite getting on several fights now. Thanks for watching and commenting, sorry it got past me somehow!

Alaska, yes.
Where was this recorded? I'm from northern NH. Lived most of my life in the White Mtns and have witnessed this maybe a half dozen times. But each time the battle only lasted a minute or two. Great footage!

Moose actually can be tamed and domesticated. Some have them as sort of a pet. Once tamed, they will follow you around. Seriously.
I would love that! I saw something once, where was it, Sweden? where there is a moose sanctuary type farm. They're giant pets. I'd ride one! They move so gracefully through that impossible thick tundra willow scrub. Better than a dressage horse!
Sweden actually had a moose calvery. Experimental.

has higher 'status' in the moose world (regarding the cows)?
Good question, the answer is all bets are off when two bulls get all hyper hormonal around the cows. The only bulls we know who avoid fights are those who are damaged/injured, or in one case, just young and lacking in confidence despite having a better set of antlers than any rival in the area. Yeah the rut takes a lot out of them. The bulls stop eating altogether and once the bothersome mating thing is done? They get right back to it. And they bed a lot too, cuz the browse is pretty much empty calories. They need to conserve energy for the rough winter ahead. As always, glad to see you!

i have some hides from moose where you can see the scars from their opponents racks scraping the hide . Very violent clashes .

@@MooseManNaturePhotos this is off topic sorta , but i remember trudging up this remote logging road and as i topped the crest of the road i seen a coyote chasing something in my direction a rabbit or a squirrel and when he saw me he slammed on the brakes like something in Wiley coyote the cartoon and spun around and was gone . The things you see when your hunting are just amazing .

The winner is Darth Raider, a small, scrappy bull that we only saw that year (2020), Tricia. The loser, who should have won, by all accounts, was a bigger bull named Tom Thumb. The wind was howling and it was really hard to keep the camera steady on the pod. It was a long and intense battle for sure!🥰

So if one of the bulls get their horns ripped off they grow back, right?
That old bull looked like his left horn ( our vantage point) nearly ripped off.
They grow an entire set of antlers every spring, they shed their antlers every year after the rut. Spares them from having to lug them around all winter, the hardest season for a moose.
When they loose or break an antler they will grow back the next year.
They do carry them for most of the winter. The rutt is in the fall, they loose their antlers in early spring. March ish
So if he won the cows why did he take off and go fight another bull. Where were the cows he was fighting for. You mention he went to them after he won. But then he took off for another fight right away? Did the old bull just really leave them alone and go away. And not try to step back in when young stud took off for another fight. I didn't even really get who won at first had to read the comments. Very interesting video. :-)
The winner was marching off to some cows not visible in this video. Another bull was busy in the bushes with those cows and he is the bull who took on this fight's winner. That fight lasted maybe 5 seconds and he'd had enough; the other bull took over those cows. They were hanging with the winner of this fight at first, see. That's how loyal cows are ha! HA! what he really did was walk past the cows and right over to start a fight with another big bull. But that time he got his butt handed to him. It was a very short fight. He should have just taken his cows and run.
