The crash-damaged Range Rover that I bought from Copart for just £1,500 gave me 700 miles of stress-free motoring. Then things went really bad. Can I fix it?

These gearboxes don’t really go wrong but do eat torque converters like like the TD6 did as the engine is too powerful for the torque converter!
You can buy reconditioned torque converters with reinforced plates for £320 which would have been a relatively cheap fix!!!
Doh! Just got the colour question wrong! Still, worth paying a bit for your content 👏
I know your very busy but I have a mercades c220 09 reg that would be good for your channel it's a non runner because of the fuel injection I'm selling for a cheap price please respond If your interested or not
Many thanks
A long time subscriber
Such good content 🔥👌
Wish I could!! But I can't pay for the ticket!! As you only accept the Yaply nonsense
Any man willing to wrestle a gearbox from a rangey with no lift and managing to video it at the same time definitely deserves a sub!
Not just a sub, but a lift too!
i hope your youtube channel grows to the point where you can keep doing these videos on a huge scale because i love watching them
Thanks mate 🤝
Mate, you’re tough as old boots. I can’t think of many folks who would remove a gearbox like that, on their own, on the drive!
I do admire your perseverance!
House bricks become very useful.
So stoned i thought you was jason statham in the thumbnail 😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Hahaha
It's great to see you're back. Hope your wife and your baby are both well?
They are! Appreciate the kindness 🤝
glad to see you back, no offence, but you remind me of why I go to a garage.
Mechanic here. This is a real struggle behind the doors 😂
Yeah, I guess there is nothing wrong with being reminded your incapable of something.
Yeah, and he also reminded me why I wouldn't buy an land rover 😂
Ahhh nail on the head. I see Mat Armstrong and I think I could do this. I see NEV and I think oh yeah, i have like, no experience or tools or ramp or driveway
haha you guys kill me
14:40 Ah, the classic "am I on fire or is it outside stuff", typical of any project car.
Haha sounds like you too have experience
I have the same experience with gas smell, is me or some tanker leaking on the road.
It's not a project car, but yeah.. Also similar annoying when a lowered car picks up a plastic something on the hot muffler or catalytic converter..
Last words are usually ‘what’s that smell?’!
After cleaning leather by special cleaner, you have to put some leather protector on it. Otherwise, dried by cleaner will be breaking.

Thanks for the tip!
Love your channel because you show just how hard it can be to repair cars on your own without all the specialist tools and equipment. Hope your channel grows to the point where you can do it full-time.
34:04 That was every bloke thinking he’s a proper soldier taking one for the team and the other half looks at you without saying a word……… I’ll just carry on with this unborn child braking my back and holding the fort. Love this channel every home mechanics struggle.
Hahaha that made me laugh - so true
21 years on and the sight of a new born baby still makes me well-up. You never get over it and you never want to.
100% Thanks 😊
Sorry. Never seen one, never want to.
@@davidaldis8242 don’t apologise. No idea who you are.
Here's my two cents on the ZF 6HP:
They're not bad gearboxes, however there are some more or less common failures that can happen.
- The Torque Converters can rarely go bad. That doesn't usually prevent it from shifting though. Usually it's just the Torque converter Clutch that fails, which will cause the RPMs to fluctuate, while going at a constant speed.
- There's some seals between the mechatronics and the main gearbox, that shrink over time. This can cause the box to have less than ideal oil pressure and will at the very least cause harsher shifts. If you leave that for too long, there's a possibility of burnt clutches. Also, there is a sealing-plate between the two halves of the mechatronics that can cause the same issues. Replacing these seals is comparatively cheap preventative maintenance, that I always recommend on these Transmissions
- There are brass bushings on the shafts inside the transmission. These seal the oil supply to the clutches and especially the ones for clutch E (I think) like to wear out, causing low Oil Pressure to that clutch. This Mainly affects 3 to 4 shifting in the beginning and will cause the gearbox to go into limp mode once it can't adapt to the loss of pressure anymore. If this happens a complete rebuild is needed (This is also my theory, as to what happened here)
By the way, You can swap over the Gearbox ECU (located on top of the mechatronics) in order to circumvent having to program the new box.
What you imply in there as a sidenote, is that he did not have to pay another 450 for the coding and nervewrecking experience? neat to know now :)
Appreciate that mate 🤝
Good knowledge and information. You're on speed dial now 😊.
@@NotEconomicallyViable Just as a follow up, if you're interested, Sreten over at M539 Restorations did a full mechatronics service on his E70's 6HP. One of the commenters is apparently a ZF tech and said it was a textbook example of how to do the service. Also of note, if you end up with an 8HP in any vehicle... you may not be able to play swapsies so I would recommend a textbook service on it if it's high mileage. My 8HP failed catastrophically at around 275,000 km due to water ingress destroying the seals (never did figure it out so now it has a separate trans cooler because not worth the risk) and it cost $13k to rebuild fully as I said in my other comment.
Congratulations on the new arrival.I became a Grandfather for the 1st time 12 weeks ago.Brought it all back. The feeling of unconditional love for a baby is immense.Good luck either way the RR
Congratulations to you too! Yeah it's a great feeling
Congratulations on your new born. Wait till you have two then you'll know what tired is. We had our two boys 18 months apart I swear I aged 20years in 2 years. Anyway loving your channel & struggles with the L322. Keep smiling pal being a dad is the best feeling in the world.
Haha I'll bear that in mind. Yeah, it feel as though I've joined the best club in the world
Brilliant Mate, ex land-rover owner, I feel your pain. Changing a gearbox on your own on that lovely soft floor makes it even more enjoyable!!
I think it's high time that Nino invests in a decent garage creeper. Might struggle a bit with the rough asphalt but it's still miles better than dragging yourself across the ground every few seconds! Also, huge congrats on the bubba!
The GAP IID tool is essential for any L322 owner, and if you have any questions Patrick and his team are always there to help. Well worth the money, as if does so much normally only accessible by main LR dealers.
Congrats on the little one!
Couldn't agree more. The only way I could run a 2007 Range Rover Sport was because of that tool!
It's a great tool for sure, and I love the fact you can use it on your phone
I can whole heartedly agree, that in the process of fixing a car, it SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS very often BUT once you get it, and get it perfect, there is no other rush like it!
You are without doubt the most entertaining TH-camr Dude ever, I watch numerous car channels, most car TH-camrs have the personality of a cardboard box, this was fun to watch, as I do enjoy watching other people struggle, & the setbacks are always a delight, thank you for all the effort & the comedy, Proud Dad, excellent mechanic, great Entertainer & an all round fine Man
Wow thanks so much 🤝
That was truly epic. Having begun making our own videos showing our life building a house off grid, running a forestry business & trying to film that, I can totally appreciate how difficult this was & felt the "Yes" when you got it working again. & as a fellow Land Rover & RangeRover owner, I salute you. Cheers!
A Range Rover in need of repair or replacement of a major component is perfectly normal.
You were lucky you got 700 miles out of it before it failed.
So odd how Harry Metcalfe can drive millions of miles with his one with little issues only.
And some of these are £200,000 today NEW. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@Wouter-van-der-Molen Even the most problematic model can have the occasional reliable example but the occasional unicorn doesn't represent the ownership experience of the majority.
JLR vehicles are very well known for being exceptionally unreliable and expensive to maintain and repair and that reputation came about because of the ownership experience of the majority.
The chairman of JLR admitted in a speech that the company loses approximately 100,000 sales per year because of its reputation for poor quality and the biggest reason the owner's state for leaving the brand marque is unreliability.
I think Harry Metcalfe has owned his from new, and he has the resources to keep it well maintained. I fully believe that so many of these cars end up in a terrible state because they start dropping in value to the point where 'ordinary' people can afford to buy one. What these people don't take into account is the massive running costs, meaning they skimp and save on the maintenance and that's how so many end up in a terrible state.
@NotEconomicallyViable That may be partially responsible for their unfavorable reputation but they are also well known to suffer from minor niggles to catastrophic failures even when relatively new and still under warranty.
Any modern vehicle shouldn't need to be treated like a Faberge egg either.
Following the manufacturer's service schedule should result in a relatively trouble-free vehicle for at least 150,000 miles if not more.
First of all massive congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your baby boy.Your videos are absolutely brilliant and just goes to show what can be done on your own drive.Keep up the great work.
Well done. Nice to see you back. Congrats on the new born. 👏
Woman always believe that men could not clean. But give the man a car, and he shows who is the master of cleaning.
Brilliant video, I feel for you my partners l322 gearbox just lost all drive no warning, £2500 later back on the road, she never used it after that as she didn’t trust it so we sold it someone got a bargain. Lucky your handy to do the job yourself.
Congratulations to you both on your baby boy. Great to see you back doing what you do best. You're a really brave guy tackling the things you do, well done for your achievements so far, we're all looking forward to much more. I've just bought a few tickets, it's far more satisfying than playing the lottery. Good luck buddy 👍
Thanks for the support 🤝
I fixed one of those rear light yesterday that was full of condensation, it happens because the bulb holder 1:09:25 not correctly seated, undo it and make sure the clips are clipped in all the way! I left the lamp in the sun yesterday to dry it all out before I rebuilt it!
Thanks for the advice - I'll take a look at that today!
Dear Sir, thank you for owning a Range Rover.
Watching your informative videos reminds me never to have a nother Range Rover, old or new.
It is a true, thinking man's, public service.
Thanks for another great video. Congratulations on your new arrival.
Been looking forward do your next video for ages. Hope your channel continues to grow and you can do it full time.
I hope so too! Thanks for the support
Finally!! Ive been waiting ages, had to rewatch your old videos because I love them all. So funny and I relate so much
There’s so many relatable things in this video, the stress of smelling burning, the knowing it’s gonna be expensive, testing your head on hard metal, and we’ve all shared the joy when it all comes together and you finally fix it.
The wife just looking at you on the floor….and carrying on walking 😂
Using your forehead to support a bag of bolts when you’ve no other limbs spare 😂😂
Awesome video, congrats on little one too!!! Thanks for sharing, hope this channel grows, you deserve it!!
Congrats to both of you on the addition to the family!
Thanks mate
Great video, and huge congratulations to you both on the birth of your son.
There were so many things I liked in this video, but for me, the best was the victory dance you and Naomi did, that was just fantastic.
I had one. They tend to like a gearbox flush around 80 to 100k. Turbos are the next pantomime around 130k. Atleast the body doesnt have to come off for turbos on the l322 unlike the sport.
Lazer tool 8214 well worth adding to your toolkit. Works on all the swollen wheel nuts. Ford, Volvo, Jag and land rover
Ahh I didn't know they existed - thanks for that
I can appreciate the support these cars have, it's much the same for my little MG TF, loads of stuff available. That's in stark contrast to my Gen 2 Subaru Legacy import which is a constant quest to recover hen's teeth.
Same as my RS6 - parts are few and far between and when they do come up for sale you have to take a loan out 😬
I too had a TF till COVID and lack of use, so sold it. It was my daily driver for 5 years!
Tbh, this factor plays a part in what I buy. Had a mini cooper not long ago. Great supply of parts and info, especially videos.
I am so sorry for the Range crapping itself but I love the 80+ minutes video❤
Love your videos, congrats on the little one, good luck to all who enters the comp. xx
Congratulations on the arrival of baby ❤ and absolutely brilliant video love these L322 :-)
Nice, new video from You!
Whole hour and 20 min!
Enjoy bud 👍🏻👍🏻
Congrats mate for the little one!🎉
Thanks 👍
Simply brilliant. Enjoyed every bit! All the best.
Congratulations to you both. Wishing you all the very best 👍
You must move full-time to making TH-cam videos, otherwise what's the point?! Fingers crossed mate, all the best to you and your big family now!
Whats the point off it ??? 😅
That's the plan!
the look your wife gave you at @34:12 got me ahahahhaha
😅
Massive congratulations to you both
And congratulations to you and well done for learning and getting better and better
Just love your videos, your just a ordinary guy repairing things, and over coming problems, keep it up .
I've been waiting so long for another upload 🙂
a drug habit would cost less than having a range rover
And running a RR would certainly push you into one.
😂😂😂made my night
Top work and not a small job, keep the videos coming, they are really enjoyable and congrats on the arrival of the little man!
Good to see you back! What a genuinely nice guy and great down to earth content. Look forward to the future when your channel grows and you have your own garage with ramp! Congrats on the baby too!
Fair play with the gearbox. Mine had been recon before I bought it. Hopefully I don’t have to change mine. Did the rear brakes as had same problem as you. Though I also changed the rear flex’s as I heard they can degrade inside, causing the brakes to bind.
Congratulations on your little lad.
Love sharing your joy when things go right for you!
Love these videos they are pure and authentic. Keep up the great work.
Hats off to you pal, love these videos and your persistence to get the job done well done👍👍😊
Your resilence is remarkable, I hope you get some income from YT . I would never buy a RR, rhough i have never driven a new one. The more vids i watch the more nightmares about these (they arent the only ones) crop up. In the race to make the ultimate luxury car the complexity has spiraled out of control.
Great content and love your relentless approach. I remember saying I’d never do another gearbox again… but then you forget the pain and remember the elation of success! Keep it up 👍
Appreciate your effort before I see .. many thnx
All the best to you, your wife and your little Baby . May good Bless you. Thank you for this Video 😊. Cheers.
Great persistence! Well done. Love your vids
I look forward to all your videos and hope for your further success with the channel. You have a great natural style and come across as a proper chap.
Congratulations to you both on the new arrival, it’s a lovely journey to travel, it made me smile seeing a new born, mine are 14 and 12 now, but it takes you right back😊
Becoming 1 of my favourite channels this. I was missing NEV over the last few days. Really helpful as well as I have a L322 needing love, so to support I bought me a wind breaker and a nice sticker.❤
Great video, felt your pain.Loved the boping about on the drive with the misses and baby, did make me laugh, the relief was obvious! 🤩🤩
Congratulations to you and the Mrs mate . Glad to see you back
Love your content little buddy I love your enthusiasm when you fix something I’ve been there mate it’s an amazing feeling only car people will understand the thrill of the fix love from Australia 🇦🇺🤘🤘
Great to see you again, hope your wife and your baby very well
Thanks mate - all is well here 👍🏻
These videos are just pure gold! The most appealing is that you are so relatable. The way you struggle through certain steps is so genuine! I cannot do anything but smile when you fix a thing and be happy about it. Keep it up this energy and good luck with the YT carrier, I'll certainly be here and follow your journey. Congratulations on the baby too! He inherited your hairstyle, it fits both of you.
Massive congratulations to you both, all the best for the three of you.....the vids are brilliant too👍👍
Congratulations on your baby . awesome video xxx❤🙏🙏🙏
Really enjoy you're video, hope you and you're family go from strength to strength 😊
The sense of relief in your face as you succeed in something you’re basically winging is something a lot of us driveway diyers can hugely relate too and is a massive reason why I keep coming back to watch each upload, nice one mate and congratulations on the new arrival 👍👍
It may have just been a solenoid issue. Pretty common in that gearbox. The rebuild kit for the lower unit is about $250 for the springs, seals, and the solenoid kit runs around $250 as well for a new set. Would have been easier to try that before replacing the whole gearbox.
Great content. Invest in tools to make your life easier - pressure bleeder for bleeding brakes which can double as a tool to pump oil into the transmission
I wish I hadn't seen this comment because I have a pressure bleeder... 😩
Congratulations on the new family member, enjoy it doesn’t seem like it now - but the next 20 years will fly by. In regard this repair you’ve done, I’m astounded how far you’ve come that’s a massive job you’ve done on the drive on your back - just incredible. Will buy some tickets.
Thanks so much mate
Good God man, I'm full of admiration. I felt so sorry for you tempered with happyness when you thought through your problems and things worked out. I'm staggered with what you managed with no physical help. Great interesting channel with genuine enthusiasm on your part. All the best.
Best car repair channel on youtube!! Love the your additude.
Aww bless a beautiful baby, congratulations to your wife and of course yourself ❤
Brilliant. I really enjoy watching your vlogs. You are very brave to tackle the jobs you do. Also very entertaining. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
Congratulations on the new baby - beautiful family! Looking forward to you being able to go full time!
Watching your videos actually made me want to work on my car a bit on my own. Only did some basics like changing filters and oil(something I learned that I absolutely despise), but felt pretty good about it overall.
I've always wanted to work on cars by my anxiety is way to high for it! You just blow past it and do it anyway its amazing ! Thanks for giving me a away to satisfy the urge to work on cars while not being able to do it.
Congratulations to you all mate! Parenthood is a proper journey and never ends.. Keep doing what you are doing and building the dream! 😎
Glad to see you back and congratulations to you all on the new bundle of fun !!!
Thanks mate
Wowzers buddy that is about as tough as it gets fitting a new gearbox to a range on your back no less!! Super impressive and congrats on the little monster. All the success in the world to you. 🎉
Amazing job well done. Such a big job to do on your drive.
Brilliant video, really enjoyed it, fingers crossed your channel will grow huge 🤞🏼
Another great video, I see myself struggling with my car in every video you make, keep the good work and the humbleness, God bless you
well done on getting it fixed , on that note its probably best keeping the scan tool if the support is that good !
Congratulations on the birth of your son.and keep the videos come I look forward to watching more
Thank you so much!
Well done. I had my fingers/toes crossed when you went through the gears. Keep the videos coming and congratulations to you both.
Congratulations to both of you on the birth of your "bundle of joy" and the rebirth of a landy gearbox. Keep up the great content 👍 and good luck for your future 👌
The tension when flashing the ecu and the relief, l think we were all with you. Brilliant
I've been there. The 2003 Acura TL is a very good car. Except that the transmission wears out around 220,000 miles under normal driving. If you really thrash it, it can wear out at as low as 70,000 miles. It's just barely possible for a car aficianado to change one out. Lots of special homemade brackets and supports needed along the way. Not a fun job at all.
big respect for you, love the happy ending very much. I am looking forward for your next video. Greetings from Poland👋
🤝
So pleased for you both, and well done on your valiant efforts with the Range Rover 🎉👍
Thank you! 👍
Well done mate the jobs you take on is amazing 👍
Congratulations on the new baby. Love your channel.
