      Was this about the sugar comment? If so, then yes. Coconut sugar is sugar. It has a lower GI than cane sugar, but it still spikes blood glucose.

  • @TekkenDanser
    @TekkenDanser 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3563

    Summary:
    1. Sugar is subtly sweet. Ketones dropped and blood glucose level increased.
    2. Stevia shows mixed results.
    3. Allulose tastes good and does not affect ketones or blood glucose level. Bad GI distress though.
    4. Sucralose is intensely sweet and does not affect ketones or blood glucose.
    5. Erythritol tastes almost as good as Allulose and has similar/no effect on ketones and blood glucose, but also causes GI distress.
    6. Monk fruit is not as sweet as sugar and has a vanilla hint (might have to use more for taste). It also safe for the Keto diet.
    7. Xylitol is not worth consuming even though it tastes close to sugar. It negatively impacts ketones and blood glucose level. Mixed GI results.
    8. Maltitol has a gummy consistency. It greatly impacts ketones and spikes blood glucose level.
    9. Aspartame seems to be Keto-friendly and diabetic-friendly, but not necessarily healthy.
    Open to corrections if needed. 😊

    • @mole62ssf

      Perhaps sucralose is best for a keto eater, but it does have quite an aftertaste. Blech.

      Excellent summation thank you! Wonder if all those sugar substitutes have an aftertaste.

    • @qwertyCandy
      @qwertyCandy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Marianne Wade IMHO sucralose tastes very good in the flavored drops form, rather than taking it pure. For example my favorite sweetener of all are caramel sucralose drops, and I'm quite sensitive to the bad aftertaste some sweeteners have. That being said I have yet to try erythritol, I think that might be still a tastier option.

  • @saadlulu4185
    @saadlulu4185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +694

    Stevia -> good
    Allulose -> good, gastric distress
    Sucralose -> good, people hate for no good reason
    Erythritol -> good, second worst gastric distress after Allulose
    Monk Fruit -> good, not as sweet as Stevia
    Xylitol -> bad, tastes good
    Maltitol -> very bad, basically sugar
    Asparatame -> good, bad for health

      Poking fingers is actually easy if you use different fingers, and even different parts of that finger. Everyone should be doing it. At least 2 or 3 times daily. Basically, as long as you dont puncture in that spot too soon for it to heal. You can also use your palm.

Also, I have heard from a couple of sources that for every pound you lose, it takes 4 pounds of pressure off your knees - you’re young, but believe me, you want good knees - also, the younger you are when you lose weight, the better condition your skin is in to snap back after the loss - so try not to “yo-yo” too much ! You should be really proud of yourself ! I have since lost most of the weight I gained, but it also gets harder to lose weight as you get older - keep up the good work !

      You can reverse your diabetes in months. Along with these great keto recipes channels, please look at videos by dr Jason fung, a kidney specialist and md that regularly reverses diabetes with keto and intermittent fasting and any video by butter Bob Briggs. The science is even better than the food videos! You can really understand what happens in your body and exactly how to reverse it.
      My story; a month ago, my fasting blood sugar had climbed to 245. That is bad! With keto and intermittent fasting my fasting glucose is 101 and my glucose after a meal is 127! Normal post meal is anything under 140. You can eat amazing food, you can feel great and, even better, your diabetes does not have to progress! Good luck to you! Oh and I've dropped 13 lbs in the time that blood sugar and blood pressure has corrected itself.

    Fantastic video. I’ve been doing a low carbohydrate diet since late 1999 and even though I am diabetic, keep my blood sugars mostly in the non-diabetic normal ranges. I now mostly use pure monk fruit as a sweetener, but have wondered about the blood sugar impact of some of the ones you tested. One note, when you are doing this kind of test don’t forget about the dawn phenomenon. This is where your liver stores glycogen overnight and releases it in the early morning, so even though you have not yet eaten anything, your blood sugar can still go up. While you usually see the dawn phenomenon written about in connection to diabetes, it is a biological process that happens in all of us.

      Some early research on The Dawn Phenomenon was on US Vietnam soldiers that were held captive for years. They were kept in complete darkness for very long periods. They became so in tune with their body, that they could always tell when it was around 4- 6 am. Their body’s would tell them. I’m diabetic and both Dawn Phenomena and “Waking Stress” as my Dr from Johns Hopkins tells me. My sugars will rise in the early morning hours but I don’t get up until later. After getting up (past the Dawn Phen) my sugars continue to rise.

      The reality is that these alternative sweeteners are either too new to have been rigorously studied, or there's just not enough independent interest in doing so, and we aren't really going to know all the long-term effects of using them for many years. We certainly cannot rely on the conclusions reached by the companies who make them, as we know historically that food manufacturers will lie, cheat, and steal to make a profit. The best bet is to limit your use of all of them until long-term studies show them to be definitively safe.

      @@migeru243 I feel the same, there are so much money involved that you cannot really rely on what these companies are saying. People knock fruits lately, but are ok with these things. Why? Yes, an apple has some sugar, but good things as well. I know it is not fashionable to say these days, but some balance does not hurt.

I have occasionally eaten sweet stuff but always mindful of the fact that it was a bit of treat. I’m always scared of the slippery slope phenomenon whereby I once again embrace the sweet taste and start adding loads of sweeteners and yet feel dissatisfied. If I decide to try a sweetener, this video will be my starting point. Thanks for taking one for the team.

    This was interesting. I would like to see it done with insulin levels, which is probably impossible due to how hard it is logistically and financially to test this much. Many argue that even tasting sweets causes an insulin response, even if it doesn’t cause a glucose spike. Maybe that’s explains why glucose levels actually dropped after the some of the sweeteners. If it causes an insulin response, whatever glucose was in the blood was reduced by the insulin that was triggered by the body thinking it was eating sugar.

      What you pointed out is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to those of us who are obese and have hyperinsulinemia --Dr Fung Intermmitant fasting expert says that although no studies have been done on effect of sweeteners on insulin - None of the obese people who are substituting sugar with sweeteners BIG TIME are losing weight - so - perhaps just the taste of sweet triggers insulin response

    • @lfnotyouthenwho
      @lfnotyouthenwho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@selini7774 That's a fair point, although correlation does not always equal causation, as they say. It's not because obese people who substitute sugar with sweeteners are failing to lose weight that the sweeteners per se are to be held accountable. Often, overweight individuals, particularly Americans, will go out for fast food and choose a Diet Coke over a regular Coke, thinking it'll make them "healthier"; they'll then procede to consume 2400 calories through cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, etc. It's absolutely futile to replace sugar with sweeteners if you continue to gorge such inordinate, exorbitant amounts of ultra processed junk. I'd like to see the weight evolution of people who follow healthy diets yet consume sugary beverages recplace such beverages with sweeteners.
      Just my two cents.

    • @benharris4218
      @benharris4218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was thinking the exact same - the blood glucose level drops seem to indicate an insulin spike, which means the sweeteners are putting the body into the fat-gain state and would explain why artificial sweeteners seem to stall weight loss in many people.

    Hey great video. Like your approach, I am a chemist and recently diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic. In the past year I have come down from the low 300's to 235 pounds. Mainly following a keto diet. As you state everything in moderation, also I have been organic for a number of years, my wife and I raise, hunt and grow most of our own food. I am not a fan of 'artificial' anything including sweetners.
    I would like to point out a few things that you might want to consider if you run this again. Data points you might want to include in your DOE (Design of Experiment) I would like to see your blood glucose levels at 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Different compounds will digest and absorb at different rates. Also you should drink water with your "sugar" to assist in dilution and absorption into your digestive tract. You might have done this but it was not in the video. Getting your morning baseline is good.
