Just started playing league. The lack of voice chat was so incredibly surprising and dissapointing. I came from fps games and am a very competitive player, but it's honestly so much more fun when you can talk and banter with your team. Toxicity, positivity, annoying 12 year olds and the dad with a kid talking in the background. I completely understand the fight against toxicity, hell i've been hearing about League toxicity as long as I've been playing videogames, but honestly it's worth it. Let the players mute who they need to, let us control our fates, and let me go through the pain and pleasure of trying to win with 4 random ppl I just met, then battling it out against them 5 mins later.

Finally found someone who deliberately talks about this. I remember back in season 4-5 when I was try harding in plat-diamond, Every game felt like a family. As in I was playing with people who genuinely wanted the best for each other, to tackle the same goal. In a way, playing in that elo for me was an experience I couldn't have in my own house. I used to compare my family to Bronze players, utterly out of touch, toxic and mean while I had a very different experience towards strangers in LEAGUE OF LEGENDS of all games. This has changed drastically, playing in the same elo in season 8+ has been nightmarish. Lots of toxic children, people who lose their minds 20 seconds into the game. Riot has promoted the Ranked experience so much and so often that it has created one of the most toxic communities on the internet. I know we sometimes look at the past with rose tainted glasses, But it is true. It wasn't so bad back then. Not everyone was so sweaty. The world has changed and Riot only cares about making people addicted to Ranked so they can be regular customers and spend money.

    • @konaqua122

There's no one to blame but Riot. They removed all the game modes that allow you to just have fun, the PVE modes like... The star guardian thingy. And then left the competitive side ONLY. So, of course, if you ONLY have competitive modes in your game, everyone will be competitive. In a competition, there's no family.

    • @StarStew
      @StarStew ปีที่แล้ว

@@konaqua122 Absolutely it is Riots fault. Just to chase money, they tried to make everyone addicted junkies. I hate it when people try to blame this sort of thing on the people. No it is entirely Riots fault. There are nice games out there that have nice people in them, They are just not made by Riot Games. But I don't agree that there is no family in competition. I had those fond memories in Ranked games. It's just Riot let a bunch of Morally corrupt people design their newer match making systems and chased away the people who want to have a good time and replaced them with children and man children.

I think one point that doesn't get brought up, when discussing the "tryharding" point, is that it was very likely exacerbated by Riot balancing the game to enforce a meta after years of saying creativity and fun were primary goals even in ranked. They had started that direction even before role queue was introduced but once that came in, all bets were off.
I also don't think being competitive has to go hand in hand with stoic, unfun, everyone is the enemy, mentality. I don't know why that's somehow a conclusion that's being considered but even when I was grinding 1000+ ranked games every season I could laugh at myself if I messed up or joke around when someone fail flashes and whatnot. I imagine if I were to say "lmao i'm trolling" after messing up in this current state of league, I'd get a suspension now.

I remember DOTA 1 days. There wasn't even a meta or role. Just pick whoever you want and play. Sometimes, there's 2-1-2, sometimes, 1-1-3 and there was a point that there was 0-5-0. I didn't even know jungle/jungler existed until I get into league.
Then, they introduced the meta. The best way to play the lanes. I don't like it before, don't like it now, will not like it ever. I remember getting flamed A LOT whenever I use my Tahm Kench Top (before all nerfs and before he was famous in top) and got flamed because he's a support champion. I trashed every top laner and then he became meta and no one flamed me anymore.
Same reason when I use veigar bot. Got flamed because he's a mage and mage is mid lane. But then someone in worlds used Syndra bot and now bot mage are thing. It's annoying to be dictated of what to use just because it's meta but if you don't go with the meta, you lose

I feel like what most ppl haven't mentioned and is a big part of it is the removal of the chat groups ( and afterwards clubs ) ; I still remember I used to frequently go into a few groups back in s5-s7 and would find people to play duoq with or even tournaments. The game felt a lot more social when those groups were around, and started dying with the implementation of clubs which were a lot more restrictive and when eventually those got remove everybody pretty much moved their whole group on discord and simply keep within their circles instead of trying to get into new ones. Nobody even adds anyone to their friend list anymore these days unless they want to flame or ask for a free boost. There's just no clear avenues to socialize within the game unless you're already with pre established groups of people from outside. Oh also duoq removal from high elo isn't helping either, there's no reason for most high elo players to socialize with others because you can't play together and that carries over to content creators which are in the same boat, than the average viewer sees the lack of socialization and may think that's the way it's meant to be so they don't even try to reach out to random people and socialize - vicious circle.

The toxicity stems from the gameplay. There's too much emphasis on competition, and in a game that has such oppressive champs, snowball, and deaths that can happen in a single second. It's overall a frustrating experience when losing. Hence, people taking that frustration out on other players.
Fun games don't have issues like this. Riot has done this to the game themselves by forcing esports, high end gameplay balance. What's fun to watch, isn't necessarily fun to play. And the way they're going about punishing people is just going to make things worse.

Old games had chat channels integrated in the games where you would form groups and meet likeminded people and while there was always shit people, I think it introduced a sense of familiarity and comradery that over time actually reduces toxicity. Modern games you can't even chat in game without someone swearing at you. MMO's are a great example - literally all of the successful ones were successful because of their social aspect. (Runescape, WoW, FF)
Over the years I've tried to make friends with people in League with the idea of discussing the game with them and growing/getting better together, which is something I had extensive experience with when it came to Warcraft 3 over a decade ago, but they will almost always rage or be too frustrated after the game to talk about it genuinely. In the past, I made friends, I found a practice partner who was better than me and practiced against them over and over until I was better, then I found someone else who was better and did the same thing, then the next person I found who I did this with, was a top USA player and we would not only practice together, but we would discuss every single game we played with each other, no matter how minute the points were. This was a key aspect to enjoying a competitive game, learning and growth and I made life-long friends from it. League does not have access to this - people say oh just use reddit or discord, but the accessibility is not the same AT ALL.
Riot's measures are wrong as well btw, because they don't treat soft inting/griefing as griefing at all. It goes ignored, it goes unmeasured, so of course, muting people will reduce what they deem as toxicity, but it's the people whorefuse to play as a team and tilt to the point of griefing that are the most frustrating to deal with.
The game should be about respecting your enemy champions and your ally champions. This sentiment that it's a solo game is wrong to think and say because it influences everyone to not play with and around their own teammates, which leads to griefing and toxicity.

This all comes down to "I want to be allowed to keep being toxic." and No. Cuz that ruins the game for the vast majority of other players. Hence why it SHOULD be punished and the people punished should make a choice- GTFO, or learn to speak with respect. :)

As a newer player ( I started 2 years ago) I agree it definitely can be a bit of a lonely experience; very few messages when gaming, outside of playing with friends
On the other hand, can you blame them? You might get 1/2/3 games when you my play poorly or someone else plays poorly, and some manchild proceeds to launch vitriol they wouldn't dare say in person. Personally idgaf, I'll return it right back, but some people just don't want to deal with that and they shouldn't have to.
Unfortunately it's that rough situation where Riot doesn't want to be seen as toxic, so they'll make these changes despite it being a small % of players, ruining it for everyone. Having said that in my own anecdotal experience; % is not small, it's a good chunk of players.

@@datboi3162 for ranked, I can understand, especially when they can cause you to be demoted or stop promotion. I'd largely be inclined not to argue this point if it's only in ranked given that's supposed to be the competitive space. Issue is you get it a lot in casual, too.
Also, it can be so situational or you're targeting the wrong person. E.g Top is getting flamed despite the fact that he got counter picked hard and doesn't want to get frozen out the game, has been asking for ganks ( none came) and is now 1/3 and getting flamed. I don't think that's fair. Poor guy is getting flamed for being 1/3 or 1/4, and jungle is 0/0/0 and is basically just farming and has no presence on the map.

    • @draftgood3980
      @draftgood3980 ปีที่แล้ว

@@chuksajeh1813 I know it's hypothetical, but the scenario where solo laners are down 1/3 or 1/4 is near always their own fault for making extremely poor laning choices and have already proved themselves not worthy of the jungler's time investment, and after that point are simply at the mercy of teammates unless they are able to get back into the game on their own. Sounds harsh, but that's how things operate in the game most of the time.
Also, generally speaking at least, you'd rather have a 0/0/0 jungler who farms and can skirmish later for objectives instead of clearing his jungle later, because your team has better odds of scoring shutdown on fed enemy member in multi-man teamfights when laning phase is over. There isn't just one way to get back into the game with ridiculous comeback and anti-snowball mechanics Riot introduced in later seasons, can't help but wonder what newer players' impression would be of the early seasons when there were only gold per ten items and turtling under tower when jungler didn't want to gank. 😂

I think that the main problem, the thing that makes the game the most toxic, is the entire ranked experience right now. The LP gains and losses, the matchmaking, the difference between MMR and rank. I mean, you can get to a point where you need a 60% win rate just to stay even. Meaning a person with just a few hours a day can play 3 games, win 2 lose 1 and oops they're out of time for the day and they're exactly where they started. Ranked is either win the game or risk wasting, not just the 30-40 minutes of your day, but up to 2-2.5 hours of time to stay exactly where you started. Not to mention lately they're just regularly placing bronze players on gold games, players 2 tiers above where they should be. And then especially with the chat restrictions now, it just spills over to normals.

League is a very good game, but the reason me and all my friends gave up on it was the toxicity. Admittedly we're not kids anymore, so we have less time and less patience to handle the grief, but that's our experience. Why would we want to play, or be social, with angry people, trolls, and salty tryhards? Even in ARAM or URF we've seen people flip their lid and have a meltdown over the slightest misplay. It's boring.
For added context, our skill levels range from silver through to diamond (low gold here) but each of us in the different leagues or tiers all had the same complaints.

Exactly not allowing the normal banter that goes back and forth in games is boring as hell. Imagine if cod or cs started doing this. Games would be silent as hell and they would start to fall off. Competition and toxicity is what makes it fun. The best boxing/MMA matches are grudge matches. Removing all the elements of what makes the game fun is what killed league for me. I want people to call me out when I mess up. Maybe it's just me idk but it's a video game not a personal attack on someone. If I tell someone in cs2 they fucking suck for losing a round that we could have won no big deal. If the call me out for only getting 4 frags in a match when everyone else is 20 bombing then I deserve it. Same thing should happen in league.

As someone that quite literally quit the game, for the first time, in 11 years of playing, BECAUSE of the changes Riot has been making recently. League of Loneliness as you call it, definitely exists. I started playing the game early 2012, got into it because of friends, loved the game, started out in Bronze 5, climbed my way up to Platinum in a few years. Since 2019 I've been consistently high Diamond with occasionally hitting Masters in both ADC and Mid Lane. The changes that Riot has been making with the communications is terrible, removal of DuoQ, being unable to ping teammates, people forcefully muting everyone else and removing ability to play as a team. The lack of Balance updates in the last year almost, introduction of Mythic items which caused itemisation to stagnate, and that's just to name a few of the issues that I have with the game.
I used to love playing League. It was my escape from school, I could hang out with friends, meet new people, find long lasting friendships. Some of my best friends IRL I found through League in one way or another. Now, I simply can't play with them since I've hit an Elo where Riot doesn't let me play with friends and Normals being filled with people that int for fun to get lower MMR or toxic pieces of shit that try to tilt you for no reason what so ever. I get punished for being good at a video game, then I get punished for trying to play with friends, and now I'm getting punished even more with the removal of the sparse communication options that people still use. Simply because, they can't seem to figure out how to solve the toxicity issue that stems from a Competitive game.
It's disheartening to see the game that I love steadily lose it's identity in favour of brand deals, tournaments, shitty monetisation practices and Developers that simply removes every possible avenue of communications just to avoid people being toxic.
The simple fix that Riot just doesn't want to admit is just. Let people be toxic, and ban them for it. Don't punish the majority of people because you get spam pinged when you go 3/10 on Karthus in your NA Masters game and lose your mind because of your shitty performance. Grow up, majority of people that play the game are adults. If you can't handle your champion name showing up multiple times in a video game chat and you're so disturbed by that fact that you're unable to use of the features that your own fucking company created and mute their pings. Maybe video games are not for you.

to be honest, best way to counter muting is to give ability to a player to filter speech/pings or to allow it for themselves.
I play Dota 2, and some players are premuted (muted before game even starts), i can unmute them if i want or i can keep them on mute. In my game settings i can turn on chat filter or turn it off...
Me? i give everyone a chance and unmute at the start of the game, if they are boring or too toxic i mute them again. I turned of chat filter as i really do not get offended by words.
In the end I understand that everyone can have a bad day and be a bit nervous. I had many of those days.
to get rid of toxicity best was is to simple ignore toxic people. Forced muting will not help as they will continue to be toxic as soon as they have the chance.
the moment they see that you do not react to them, even though you can see their chat/pings is the moment when they will realize that their toxicity means absolutely nothing...
P.S. all that being said - I REALLY do not have anything against good quality trash talk/banter.

I feel like its just the que system in general thats a problem. This is also different between regions and total player base of each server BUT in the majority of my games recently if Im on mny silver 1 acct no matter what que I am on I will have at least 1 emerald/plat duoed with a bronze/silver player. So what ends up happeneing a lot is that one high rank player starts talking shit or calling out other people while ignoring the fact their friend is at 20cs 20 mins into the game and is 0 n 8. The seemingly unfair ques greatly increase a persons attitude towards their team. Then we have the differences in the idea of what is "FUN". To some fun is random builds and running it down to others its trying to get better and others jsut want a game that seems like people are trying and thats fun. When it seems like someone is actively trying to hinder your experience berceuse of these different ides it kinda pisses you off. When i was playing in LAN server I was leveling my acct so i could play in ranked (i live on the border and have better ping in lan). I believe I wwas level 10 and we had unranked all the way up to challenger players in teh same game. Needless to say challenger player bodied everyone and my team had given up about 10 mins in. I think that players should be given a choice abut opting into or out of quicker que times in for better "quality" matches. but hey that would slow the entire game down so im not really sure how to fix anything. This also happens a shit ton in valorant in terms of the random skill differences in NORMAL ques

Having fun? Now when I play the game, even in normals, I feel like I am 1v9-ing usually. I make one mistake (and I do every now and then, I'm not a super good league player), I get spammed with pings and insults by my own team mates. And that's way more demotivating than anything the opponent can do to you cause hey... We're supposed to work together and cover each other. I only solo que now cause I usually have no choice. If I see my friends are on at the same time as me though, I try to get games with them as much as possible, cause its just better in terms of communication.

The elephant in the room is that toxicity does not stem from a verbal engagement the vast majority of the time.
For the most part it starts with a from a non verbal toxic performance.
A LOT of players intentionally throw games and troll other players which leads to breed frustration and it's usually this frustration that leads to spill out towards other players who don't deserve any form of verbal toxicity. But the core issue that no one wants to address is how common it is to have the people on your own team are actively trying to ruin everyone else's time.
it's not rocket science to acknowledge that this is the fundamental issue.
