I've watced dozens of hours of videoof this terrible event, but I have never seen this before. This may be one of the most frightening I've ever seen - to see that wall of water in the distance, and realising how big it must've been, would have been incredibly scary to witness.
Agreed. When you see that the wave is two times taller than the line of trees first, and then the level of water where the brigde stands, you understand the intensity of it.
I was just going to say exactly the same, they obviously thought they were safe, did you see how much the water level raises up under that suspension bridge? The most moving and terrifying tsunami vid I’ve seen yet from Japan. That is a LOTTTT of water slamming into their world. The screams of the kids, and of the adults!
This has to be one of the best videos out there covering the disaster. Watch out in the distance at time stamp 2:50-3-10. The height that this wave gets is just horrifying to say the least. Those trees out there are at least 40 to 50 ft tall, and some of them even taller. When the wave hits a break the height of the water dwarfs them in comparison. These people had to think it was the end of the world. I don't know how the person who took this video managed to survive but I'm glad they did. They're still rebuilding to this day in some places. My heart goes out to each and every one of you and I'm sending prayers of love, condolences for all your loss, and good fortune all the days ahead of you.
Compare the water level at :15 and 3:42. Incredible. This might be one of the best videos to document just how high these walls of water must have been. After this tragic disaster, while terrible, it was also uplifting to see all the people pull togther and help one another.
It's not a "wall" of water, it's more like a mountain of water...or better yet: a mountain range of water. It starts with some foothills, that aren't too bad...and then, suddenly, you're facing the really high peaks...and those ARE bad.
@@richardl3720 It's hard to tell. It seems like the water is splashing against a breakwater or something there which is causing it to build up additional height. Maybe 10-15 meters? The run-up later looks worse though, when you look at the level the water reaches beneath the bridge.
Staggering footage. The loss of life and livelihood remains catastrophic many years later. The tsunami came close to reaching the suspension bridge high above typical sea level. I’m amazed that the person who captured this footage managed to escape to higher ground in time. May all departed souls rest in peace.
The guy who took the footage was on the balcony of a building right next to this. You see it at the end of the video. He would have been absolutely terrified thinking he was going to die but he kept filming. He must have nerves of steel.
This looked like a normal tsunami event until 2.44 in when a 2nd and 3rd wave hit the shore line and the guy holding the camera looked around towards the bridge and the waves are almost touching where the cars are - terrifying - i would have had a heart attack if i saw that - this is amazing footage !
I thought I've seen all the footage but this is new. In the end they look surrounded, scary ... wished there was more but I hope the end of the video indicates they were able to take off and save themselves.... glad they got out!
First time i've seen this particular footage too. You nailed it, seeing that chaos right below the bridge would have to be about the most terrifying things a person could see.
the waves breaking in the background at 2:30 ff are unbelievable to watch, even more surreal than the flooding much closer to them because of the epic (in a bad way) scale. Like from a disaster movie but real and thus exponentially scarier. Having seen the height it reached in some places, the people that took this video are lucky to be alive
I've watched this many times over the past 9 years, but I'm still shocked at the immense amount of spray in the distance on the right as the wave crashes into the shore, and then how high the water is around the base of the bridge at 3:16.
The wave was likely 60 to 80 feet tall! I would have had a heart attack if I had been there. I studied geology in college, but there were no films of a tsunami except for the old black and white Hilo footage lasting seconds. Science has learned more about tsunami in the last 15yrs than in all preceeded history.
2:17 Those huge waves hitting the breaker wall or rocks off in the distance was incredible. They must have splashed 100 feet in the air. Also, look at the height of the bridge at the beginning and after all the water came in.
@ 1:46 you see an SUV driving along near the bridge...its a maroon SUV..🤔 Or am I seeing things?! Why would anyone be out driving alongside the wall near the water after a huge earthquake hit?! I thought the people of Japan knew that after an earthquake a tsunami would hit???...
Their screams are not from the water that's immediately out in front of them. Their screams are from the incredibly massive waves of water that they see coming in from the far distance almost a mile away. Some of the trees way out in the distance that you can see are over well over a 100' feet tall. The impact splashes from the first few sets of waves hitting the break out in the distance are well over a 200' tall. From time stamp 2:00-3:20 look in the distance at the monster. They surely thought that this was the end if days! All my love, prayer and condolences goes out to all the people of Japan who's lives were forever changed that day. May God give you peace.
Breathtaking, I have watched a lot of these tsunamis in Japan Videos and the power of 20-meter waves never fails to scare me. I couldn't tell the scale of things till he zoomed out which clarified things most keenly.

「動けなくなりそう」っていう、否定として物事を捉えるより、それぞれの土地で一番高い場所に逃げる事が最善の策というのは答えとして出たんだから、実際の場面でもそれを遂行するしかない。
海が見える所に住む姉と連絡が途絶え、10日に生存確認した時は泣いた。持っていったおにぎり10個を無心で食べてるの見て、また泣いた。日本に安全に住める場所なんてないと最近は強く思う。

能登半島の地震は2024に来たる大災害の避難訓練だと思わないとね。正月から今年は気を抜くなと神のお告げだわ。みんな生き残るぞ。

当時小2だった私はお母さんに津波ってどんなやつって聞いたら「妹(身長が1mくらいだった)が9人上に重なったくらい高い波がくるんだよ」って言ってて訳わかんなかったけど、この映像みて今やっと分かった。信じられないほど怖い。心の中で早く逃げてって何回も叫びました。

日本は島国であり地震国だということを絶対に忘れてはいけないと強く思いました。
最初の橋と海面の距離を考えたらものすごい。最後は橋まで飲み込むんじゃないかと思うくらい高い。凄まじい。
こーゆう動画普段から見てると、何か起こった時にすぐ動けるようになると思います。
沢山の人に見てもらいたい。そして年寄りや子供とか走れない人は本当に早めの行動をしてほしい

津波警報なってから津波到着まですぐだったと聞きますし、地域にもよりますが、逃げきれなかった人も多いと思います。
何にしてもコメント返してくれたお陰でひさびさにこれを思い出して、いざとゆう時に自分の親位はおんぶして走れる位の足腰は常に鍛えておこうと思いました。ありがとう
あの日、多くの人たちが津波の犠牲となり、次々と人知を超えることが起こり、すごくショックが大きかったことを思い出します。亡くなった方々のご冥福を祈り、また被災された方々の心の再建、町の再建が少しずつでも進んでいきますように。「また会おう!群青の町で!」
辛い。当時の自分は高校の卒業式を終え、栃木の自宅で呑気に本を読んでいました。本震がきてからなんとか家の外に脱出したけれど、周囲の電柱が倒れ、電線がブチブチ切れて、地面の奥底から今まで聞いたことのない響きが聞こえたのを思い出します。
その日の映像を見るのはあまりにも辛いけれど、決して忘れてはいけない。後世にも伝えていかねばならない出来事だと思います。

東日本大震災の時自分はまだ幼稚園で、その時の記憶全てが無く、被害も一切無かった場所に住んでいたためこれまでこのような動画を見る事もなく10年経ち今自分の携帯電話を持ちこの動画を開きました。これが現実だと信じる事が物凄く難しいです。怖すぎて涙が止まりません。
絶対に2011年3月11日を忘れてはいけないとずっと教えられてきた意味が今日やっとしっかり分かりました。
亡くなられた方々のご冥福を心からお祈りします。

南海トラフよりも警戒度が高まっています。
相馬市尾浜に住んでいた親友がこの津波に飲まれなくなりました。当時お母さんといたらしくお母さんはみつかったのですが親友は行方不明のままです。17歳でした、逃げていて欲しかった…
今では学校の道徳の教科書に載っていますよね、私も学びました。海のアナウンス関係の仕事をしていた女性が人々を守るために避難せず、津波が放送室に来るまで避難の呼びかけのアナウンスをしていたそうです。その方は亡くなりました…本当に尊敬します。
みんなを守るために勇気ある行動をしたんですね。。。
そのおかげで守られた命があると思います。
その話し当時からすごく報道されていましたが‥家族の、…でも逃げて欲しかったって言葉が凄く印象に残ってます。

千葉県や茨城県も津波の被害にあったのに全く報道されてませんでしたね。福島県はまだ報道されたほうでは？

あんま死者数でどうこう言いたくないけど、実際3.11の死者の99%は岩手宮城福島の3県が占めてるから、報道が偏るのもしょうがなかったかも。
当時、山を越えた先に住んでました。
震災後、落ち着いてから動画の場所に行ったのですがあったはずの家々が何もなく、着いてから暫くはショックで涙が止まりませんでした。
このくらいの地震なら大丈夫と油断せず、沿岸部に住んでいる方は地震がきたらすぐに逃げる準備を！

遠くで防風林を高さを軽々と超える巨大な津波に戦慄しました。
自然災害の発生は止められなくても被害を減らすことは人間の努力で成し遂げられるはず。

Yeah the water under the bridge is very telling.
Yeah this is one of the scariest videos of the tsunami. Seeing the water height just rise and rise, almost seeming like it would swallow the bridge.

Staggering footage. The loss of life and livelihood remains catastrophic many years later. The tsunami came close to reaching the suspension bridge high above typical sea level. I’m amazed that the person who captured this footage managed to escape to higher ground in time. May all departed souls rest in peace.
The guy who took the footage was on the balcony of a building right next to this. You see it at the end of the video. He would have been absolutely terrified thinking he was going to die but he kept filming. He must have nerves of steel.

This looked like a normal tsunami event until 2.44 in when a 2nd and 3rd wave hit the shore line and the guy holding the camera looked around towards the bridge and the waves are almost touching where the cars are - terrifying - i would have had a heart attack if i saw that - this is amazing footage !
What the actual...I've seen hundreds of videos of this tsunami, and I thought I'd seen it all. Amazing footage indeed.

In the end they look surrounded, scary ... wished there was more but I hope the end of the video indicates they were able to take off and save themselves.... glad they got out!
First time i've seen this particular footage too. You nailed it, seeing that chaos right below the bridge would have to be about the most terrifying things a person could see.

Deepest sympathy to all people affected by the tsunami - how horrifying and harrowing to see your livelihood and home swept away.
the waves breaking in the background at 2:30 ff are unbelievable to watch, even more surreal than the flooding much closer to them because of the epic (in a bad way) scale. Like from a disaster movie but real and thus exponentially scarier.
Having seen the height it reached in some places, the people that took this video are lucky to be alive

I've watched this many times over the past 9 years, but I'm still shocked at the immense amount of spray in the distance on the right as the wave crashes into the shore, and then how high the water is around the base of the bridge at 3:16.

God yes, this is one of the most terrifying recordings of the Tsunamis.
How tall was that bridge?
The wave was likely 60 to 80 feet tall! I would have had a heart attack if I had been there. I studied geology in college, but there were no films of a tsunami except for the old black and white Hilo footage lasting seconds. Science has learned more about tsunami in the last 15yrs than in all preceeded history.

2:17 Those huge waves hitting the breaker wall or rocks off in the distance was incredible. They must have splashed 100 feet in the air. Also, look at the height of the bridge at the beginning and after all the water came in.

石川とは比べのにならないくらいすごい津波だな、南海トラフでこれを越えてくるのはやばすぎる
これを永遠に忘れては行けません。

東日本大震災から９年。たくさんの方々が亡くなられた今日という日を絶対に忘れてはいけないと思う。

Their screams are not from the water that's immediately out in front of them. Their screams are from the incredibly massive waves of water that they see coming in from the far distance almost a mile away. Some of the trees way out in the distance that you can see are over well over a 100' feet tall. The impact splashes from the first few sets of waves hitting the break out in the distance are well over a 200' tall. From time stamp 2:00-3:20 look in the distance at the monster. They surely thought that this was the end if days! All my love, prayer and condolences goes out to all the people of Japan who's lives were forever changed that day. May God give you peace.

Breathtaking, I have watched a lot of these tsunamis in Japan Videos and the power of 20-meter waves never fails to scare me. I couldn't tell the scale of things till he zoomed out which clarified things most keenly.
